John Helm

John E. Helm, 86, of Donnellson, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at his home.

Born Oct. 15, 1914, in West Point, he was the son of William and Gertrude Werner Helm. He married Irene Hoenig on Feb. 15, 1935, in Kahoka, Mo.
Mr. Helm was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for the Iowa Department of Transportation Highway Division, retiring in 1979 with 32 years of service.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point, Donnellson American Legion and a 50-year member of the Fort Madison Pastime Club.

Survivors include his wife; one sister, Dorothy Raid of Fort Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Hofbauer Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Helm will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point, with the Rev. David Wilkening officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for his church.

Lloyd Titus

A celebration of life and remembrance service was held for Lloyd Allen Titus at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Crapo Park overlooking the Mississippi River. Pastor Patti Webb officiated.

Born Oct. 5, 1949, in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of Eirlys Radcliffe-Branch Titus and Lawson Salome Titus. His mother was a British World War II bride who came to Burlington in 1946.
Mr. Titus died Dec. 14, 1971, in Iowa City at the age of 22. He deeded his body to the Anatomy Department of the University of Iowa Medical Center, which held a memorial and burial service for him at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City on May 23, 1973. A plaque at his burial site states: "In memory of those who in death have served the living."

A graduate of Fort Madison High School, he attended Southeastern Community College and obtained a B.A. in creative writing from the University of Iowa in 1971. He was a gifted and witty writer and had a wry and zany sense of humor. An avid reader, his favorite authors were J.D. Salinger and William Goldman. He also enjoyed playing baseball and the guitar, and he loved rock and folk music, particularly the music of The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkle.

Mr. Titus was a cinemaphile, whose favorite movies were "Bonnie and Clyde," "The Graduate," and "Cool Hand Luke".

Mary Vivian Reel

Mary Vivian Reel, 59, of rural Mount Sterling, died Monday, June 25, 2001, in a motor vehicle accident on Illinois 24 near Piper City, Ill.

Born April 27, 1942, in Lafayette, Ind., she was the daughter of Raymond and Eloise Mennen Ritchie. She married James M. Reel on Sept. 23, 1961, in Indiana. He was seriously injured in the same accident.
Mrs. Reel grew up in Indiana and graduated from Pine Village (Ind.) High School. She and her husband lived for many years near Bondurant, where they operated a Christmas tree farm. She worked for the Farmers Home Administration. They retired to Keosauqua in 1997 and moved to their farm near Mount Sterling in 1998.

She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Gregory of DeSoto; one daughter, Melanie Bumpus of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Frank Ritchie of Peru, Ind., Gene Ritchie of Kentland, Ind., David Ritchie of Macy, Ind., and Jerry Ritchie of Greenfield, Ill.; and one sister, Judith Bean of Crawfordsville, Ind.

Her mother died in the same accident with her. She also was preceded in death by her father and one daughter.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Reel will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God Church in Fairfield, with Pastor Stephen Higdon officiating. Burial will be in Harness Cemetery , Mount Sterling.

A memorial has been established. Contributions may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 21216 280th St., Mount Sterling, IA 52573.

Sherman Moore

Sherman W. "Bud" Moore, 94, of Wapello, died Wednesday afternoon, June 27, 2001, at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction.

Born Aug. 14, 1906, near Columbus Junction, he was the son of Henry and Rose Walsinger Moore. He married Mary Etta Bergen on April 28, 1924, in Wapello. She died March 12, 1988.
Mr. Moore farmed west of Wapello for many years and also was a truck driver.

He was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Muscatine. In more recent years, he enjoyed word puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Rosemary Chalupa of Washington, Betty Perry of Lake Charles, La., and Esther Reinhart of Muscatine; two sons, Robert Moore of Lake Charles, and Rex Moore of San Antonio, Texas; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Kinsley of Wapello.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three sons, one daughter, one grandson and one sister.

Visitation will begin at noon today at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Moore will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Chris Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Willa Rooney

Willa Rooney, 80, of Keokuk, died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Keokuk Area Hospital. Arrangements are pending at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk.

Elizabeth Mariner

Elizabeth E. Mariner, 89, formerly of Sun City, Ariz., died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born March 25, 1914, in Topeka, Kan., she was the daughter of Lloyd B. and Mildred Forbes Smith. On Dec. 24, 1935, she married Ralph Edwin Mariner Jr. in Kansas City, Kan. He died in 1998.

Mrs. Mariner was raised in Kansas City and was a 1931 graduate of Wyandotte High School. She graduated from Kansas State College in 1935.

She moved to Iowa in 1998 to be near her family and resided at Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Mrs. Mariner was a homemaker and an advertising journalist. She enjoyed rock–hounding, square dancing, ceramics, reading and genealogy.

She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and the First Presbyterian Church of Sun City, Ariz. She was a volunteer for the blind, recording books and magazines.

Survivors include a son, James L. Mariner of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann of Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren; and nine great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.

There will be no visitation or services at this time. The family will have a private family service in Colorado at a later date.

The Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel of Mount Pleasant is assisting the family with arrangements.

Theresa Modaff

Mrs. Theresa Modaff, 89, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2005. As per her request there will be no visitation or services. The body of Mrs. Modaff has been cremated.

Donald Frank

Donald R. Frank, 83, of Burlington died at 9:27 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 23, 1921, in Wall Lake, he was the son of Roy H. and Minnie Jansen Frank. On Nov. 30, 1946, he married Ilene Beatrice Lincoln at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge.

Mr. Frank worked as a Burlington Northern Railroad fork lift operator.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of American Legion and square danced with the Square–N–Aders. He enjoyed tinkering with cars.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Warren Frank of Antioch, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Chester Frank of Lakeview; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Prugh's Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church.

The funeral for Mr. Frank will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Betsy Lee officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Colette Cady

Colette Roberta Cady, 80, of Keokuk, died at 2:25 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at Montrose Health Care Center in Montrose.

Born May 21, 1924, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of James and Meta Seabold Cady.

She was a member of New Testament Christian Church.

Survivors include friends and caregivers, Phil and Dorcas Rose of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk.

The graveside service for Miss Cady is at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Little Mound Cemetery in rural Keokuk with the Rev. Bill Hauser officiating.

Betty Ertz

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Elizabeth E. "Betty" Ertz will be 10:00 AM Friday, February 11, at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . Visitation will begin at 8:00 AM Thursday, February 10, at Hass–Thielen Funeral Home with a Rosary recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends following a 6:30 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established for the Burlington Notre Dame School System. David Baxter

David Duane Baxter, 44, of Mount Pleasant, died suddenly Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at his home.

Born Oct. 9, 1960, in Garden City, Kan., he was the son of William K. and Izetta P. Caudill Baxter.

Mr. Baxter was a local handyman. He was a Navy veteran and loved to fish.

Survivors include four sisters, Anna Loyd and Mona Gates, both of New London, June Moeller of Salem and Margaret Gillispie of Mount Pleasant; and four brothers, Jim Baxter of Medicine Lodge, Kan., George Baxter of Miami, Okla., Carl Baxter of Keosauqua and Bill Baxter of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The committal service for Mr. Baxter will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Elaine Rovane

Elaine Jensen Rovane, 75, of Keokuk died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

Born Nov. 14, 1929, in Atlantic, she was the daughter of Jens C. and Agnes P. Jensen. On June 14, 1952, she married John Agnew Rovane. He died Oct. 13, 2004.

Mrs. Rovane was a speech therapist in the Des Moines public schools. She later worked for the Speech and Hearing Clinic in Columbia, S.C. After moving to Keokuk, she provided speech therapy in her home to private clients.

She attended Atlantic public schools and was a 1951 graduate of the University of Iowa with a bachelor of arts in speech therapy.

She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Keokuk, where she was a vestry member, Sunday school teacher and president of the ECW and Altar Guild. She was a member of the Keokuk Country Club board of directors and the Friendly House board of directors. She was a recipient of the YMCA Layman of the Year award. She was a member of PEO Chapter LZ and Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary. She was president of the Mother's Study Club. She was an active volunteer for Birthright and the United Way for many years.

Survivors include one son, Steven Rovane of West Des Moines; two daughters, Celeste Anderson of Council Bluffs and Mary Weld of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Gardner of Maryland; one brother, Kenneth Jensen of Clarinda; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Holy Eucharist will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Keokuk, with the Rev. Bruce Blois officiating. Entombment will be in the Chapel of the Holy Cross in St. John's.

Memorials have been established for St. John's Episcopal Church and Birthright.
