Jim was born on July 28, 1923 in Lone Rock, Iowa, the first child of Frederick and Anna Rath. He graduated from Burt High School in 1940. Jim served as a draftsman in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After the war, he served in the American Civil Service stationed in Tokyo, Japan. There he met his wife, Fukiko Nishiyama. They were married in Tokyo on February 1, 1952. In 1955, they came to the United States with their first daughter, Anne and made their home in Cedar Rapids. Jim worked as a draftsman at Universal Engineering until his retirement in 1987.
Jim’s life symbolized the name of his hometown, for he was a “Lone Rock.” Without fanfare or the need for accolades he quietly touched the lives of everyone who knew him with his kind, gentle strength. He had a keen analytical mind and was an amazing handyman. He loved to work around his house and was always there to help friends and neighbors. He loved crossword puzzles and model trains, the study of mathematics and his second home, the country of Japan. Mostly, Jim deeply loved his wife, daughters, son-in-law and grandchildren and we will miss him more than words can express.
Jim died as he lived – a gentleman. His wishes were to have his ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean, halfway between Japan and the United States.
