Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories after noon on Sunday. Arrangements are with the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Surviving is her loving family, Bill and Kay Pitlik and Dennis and JacqueHolloway and their families.
Alma was born October 28, 1901 in Cedar Rapids to Charles and Marie (Novotny) Turechek, the daughter of the first grocer in Cedar Rapids’ Czech Village. She was a graduate of Washington High School in Cedar Rapids in 1920. Alma started at Coe as a student because it was the only school her parents of modest means could afford, and she walked two miles to class each day. She studied music theory with Louise Crawford and piano with Grace Swab, with major fields of study in piano, music theory, and public school music. Even before graduating with summa cum laude honors with a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1925, she was asked to join the Coe music faculty. She remained at Coe for 44 years, mentoring generations of students and teachers.
From 1928-1929, Alma took a one-year absence to study piano with Madame Olga Samaroff at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Alma received a German American Exchange Scholarship for study at the Stern Conservatory of Music, Berlin, where from 1934-1935 she studied piano with Herr Theodore Schoenberger and choral conducting with Herr Bruno Kittel. As a graduate student, her main field included music theory. In 1941, Alma received her master’s in music from the University of Iowa, under the guidance of Dr. Arnold Small, advisor. For her thesis, Alma translated and arranged dozens of Czech folk songs that she had used in teaching summer music classes to youth camp leaders. Many of these are found in Whither Little Path, the song book arranged and translated by Alma in 1943. In 1999, Her original piece was researched, expanded and produced by Coe College as Whither Little Path and other Authentic Folksongs of the Czech and Slovac Republics.
Alma spent her summers from 1935-1966 in Europe studying renowned folk festivals in Straznice and Tvrdonice and smaller festivals in the Czech Republic, and observed natives from all provinces wearing traditional kroje (costumes). From 1965-1966, she took a sabbatical leave for study at the Universita italiana per stranieri in Perugia, Italy; the Pontifical Academie of Music, Rome; and the Institute of Music, Vienna. After retiring from the Coe faculty in 1969, she attended a 1974 Summer Seminar in Art and Architecture at Lincoln College, Oxford University, followed by study throughout Europe.
For many years, Miss Turechek taught folklore at summer camps throughout the Midwest, from Ohio to Nebraska and Minnesota to Missouri, sponsored by the National Recreation Association. These camps were for adult instructors preparing to direct recreational activities in Youth Camps.
Fluent in Czech, French, German and Italian, she traveled extensively throughout the world with extended stays in Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Cuba, all of the British Isles, Greece, Europe and China. Reliving her travels in talks and slide programs gave her great joy.
Her scholastic and professional honors included: Summa cum laude, Mortar Board, Carrie Mack Prize, Past President of Phi Kappa Phi, Mortar Board, Pi Kappa Lambda, Past President of Mu Phi Epsilon, Delta Kappa Gamma, Crescent, and Phi Beta Kappa. Alma was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, American Association of University Professors and was local president for two years with the Music Teacher’s National Association. She was a member of the Iowa Music Teacher’s Association, state board member of the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs, member of the National Federation of Music Clubs, Past President of the Beethoven Club, senior advisor of the Mozart Club, and member of the Cedar Rapids Art Association. Alma was also past president of the Community Concerts Association, and she served on the board at several schools in Ohio, Minnesota, and Iowa for training directors of recreation. Other memberships include PEO and Sokol.
Additional honors included being listed in the Who’s Who in American Women, Who’s Who in Czech Women, and Who’s Who in American Education. Alma received the Coe Alumni Award of Merit in 1958, faculty citation for long and faithful service in 1951 and again in 1960, and was acting chair of the music department at Coe in 1958. In 2001, she was honored with the creation of the Alma A. Turechek endowed chair in music at Coe.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alma Turechek Scholarship Fund, c/o Coe College, 1220 1st Ave. N.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.
