Dean E. Rusley, 81, of Manor Care died there on Monday, Aug. 4, 2003 after a long illness. Memorial services at 11 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where there will also be Military Rites. Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday and at the Chapel after 10 AM on Friday.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, a son Robert and his wife Janet of Tulsa, OK, a daughter, Patricia Milici and her husband, Anthony of Chicago, ILL., a sister, Elaine Swails of Iowa City and a brother, Marvin of Mason City. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Scott, Jeffrey, T.J., Nicole, Erin, Emily and Katie; two great grandchildren, Madison and Megan and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dean was born on June 5, 1922 in Lake Mills, the son of Theodore and Frances Perkins Rusley. He married Phyllis D. Fackler on Jan. 10, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. Dean was the owner and operator of B& R Dental Laboratories for 25 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 263, El Kahir Shrine, VFW Post No. 788, American Legion Hanford Post No. 5, the DAV and served in the Air Force during WWII. Dean was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening and especially time spent with his family and friends. He was a gentle soul who was loved by all who knew him. A memorial fund has been established in Dean's name. Military rites by American Legion Hanford Post No. 5.

Michael A. Suchan, 50 of 3009 12th Ave. SW died Sat. Aug. 9, 2003 at his home after a brief illness. Graveside services at 10 AM on Wed. at the Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Deacon Gerald Pettit will officiate. Friends may visit with the family at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include his parents, Edward and Betty Suchan and a brother, David and his wife, Wendy, all of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by two nephews, Corey and Zach and special friends, Marcy Coulbourn and Wayne Edwards.
Mike was born on March 3, 1953 in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1971 and attended Winona College in Winona, MN. He married Becky Overhulser in Cedar Rapids. They were later divorced. Mike worked for the Limited Corp. and Check Free in Columbus, Ohio before returning to Cedar Rapids. Most recently he worked for Aegon at their Control Center on the Kirkwood Campus.
Mike enjoyed music. The Drum and Bugle Corps and he had played in several local bands. Mike will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

J. Marvin Garner, 81, 1810 Emmy Lane, Hiawatha, died Monday at the Hiawatha Care Center following a long illness. There will be no local services and graveside services will be conducted at the Mendon cemetery , Mendon, Missouri at a later date. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Mr. Garner is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn M. Garner, 3 daughters, Terrill Lynn (Mark) Kochenderfer of Mesa, Arizona, Gail (David) Stork of Robins, Iowa and Leesa (Mike) Augustine of Rose Hill, Iowa and one son, Todd (Carrie) Garner of Des Moines, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, Nick (Stephanie) Kochenderfer, Kate (Bryan) Kochenderfer Bruning, Brad (Jennifer) Stork, Kelly Stork, Caitlin Augustine and Hannah Augustine and Grayson Garner and one great grandson, Tristan James Kochenderfer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jon Mark.
Mr. Garner was born August 5, 1922 in Armstrong, Missouri to Jefferson Marvin and Lucy Jane Littrell Garner. He grew up in Mendon, Missouri and began college at the University of Missouri until he joined the Army Air Corp in 1942. He served his tenure in the service stateside and returned to the University of Missouri where he graduated in 1946 with degrees in Agriculture and Journalism. Marvin worked all of the life in the Agriculture field. He started at Wilson & Company in Chicago, Illinois, was a county agent in Linn County, Missouri, and was a hog buyer for the stockyards in St. Joseph, Missouri where he also was their farm announcer for KFEQ. In 1958, he became the executive secretary of the Chester White purebred swine association and in 1969 became Executive Vice President of the National Pork Producers Council. The slogan, “Pork-the other White Meat” was born during his time with the NPPC. In 1979, he returned to St. Joseph in a marketing role for Biozyme Inc. and completed his career as a realtor.
He was a longtime member of the Valley of St. Joseph Masonic Lodge, the Moila Shrine Temple and Kiwanis Club, all located in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Marvin will be remembered for his many friends throughout the United States. He could walk into almost any town in the Midwest and know someone. He was a loving husband and father and will always be remembered for his dedication to those principles he believed in.
Donations may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospitals or the charity of choice. Mrs. Garner can be contacted at the family home.

Doris D. Fleck, 75, of 2455 10th Ave SW, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2003, at West Ridge Care Center of cancer. Services at 3 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. William Jamison will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 2:30 PM on Saturday.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years Keith, a daughter Kristen Nudo of San Diego, California, three sons Jeff Fleck and wife Luann, and Dudley Fleck all of Cedar Rapids, and David Fleck and wife Deneen of Toddville, Iowa, six grandchildren, Keith, Nikki, Keaton, Khaylor, Shawna, and Peter, and a niece Nickie Waddell of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Ella Roelf.
Doris was born October 21, 1927 in Churdan, Iowa to Donald and Iona Stotts Dudley. She married Keith T. Fleck on March 23, 1948 in Des Moines. Doris was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend to all who knew her. She was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church. She really enjoyed and followed racing, the Iowa Hawkeye's, painting, and anything her family and grandchildren were involved in. Doris was definitely the glue to the family and was always there when a need arose. Her efforts will never be forgotten. She generously supported numerous local and national charities for a long period of time. She truly believed in helping those charities that she believed were genuine, honest and sincere. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Thomas C. Knutson

Thomas C. Knutson, 54 of 150 Thompson Dr. SE died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. Services at 2 PM on Sat. at the Madison Lutheran Church in Ridgeway where Tom was baptized and confirmed. Revs. Phillip and Ginny Olson will officiate. Burial at the Church cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Friday where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 PM. There will also be a visitation at the Madison Lutheran Church after 12:30 PM on Sat.
Survivors include his parents, Clair and Helen Knutson of Ridgeway, his fiancé, Beth Washler and her daughters, Sarah and Molly and Tom's step daughter, Lee Pietzsch of Des Moines. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Corrine.
Tom was born on Nov. 22, 1948 in Decorah the son of Clair and Helen Helgeson Knutson. He graduated from High School in Decorah and the University of Iowa in 1973. Tom was the National Account Sales Manager at Amana Refrigeration for 28 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Cedar Rapids Country Club, the Association of Retarded Citizens, where he was actively involved and Phi Kappa Epsilon. Tom was an avid Hawkeye fan, enjoyed golf, crossword puzzles and all sports. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor's choice in Tom's name.

Mary P. Smith, 82, died Monday Aug. 18, 2003 in the home of her daughter, Jan Pearson of Palo, with her faith and determination Mary endured several episodes of cancer since 1982, it was a long courageous battle. Mary resided for nearly 50 years at 1522 11th Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids. In April of 2002 she moved to 1973 Clifford Road in Palo to share the home of her daughter, Janet and husband, David Pearson. Services at 1 PM on Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 9 PM on Wed. and at the Chapel after 12:30 PM on Thursday.
Mary will be greatly missed by her daughter, Jan and husband, Dave Pearson of Palo, a sister, Roberta Cox (Wayne) of Keosauqua, a brother, Herbert Stonehouse (Mary) of Mt. Pleasant., Grandchildren, Kristin Pearson of Cedar Falls, Tim Pearson of Madison, Wis., Corrie (Joel) Mick Enyart of Cedar Rapids, Amy (Ubaldo) Mick Valle of Longmont, Col., Scott Mick and Robert Mick of Austin, TX.. Great grandchildren, Tori Enyart of Cedar Rapids, and Briana and Laura Valle of Longmont, Col. three generations of nieces and nephews and her dearest friend, Gertrude Phelps.
Mary was born on May 14, 1921 to Richard and Viva Mason Stonehouse in Stockport. She married Leo F. Smith on July 19, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, a daughter, Judy E. Smith Mick, two sisters, Wilma Hoskins and Anna Ruth Huffman, a brother, Richard Stonehouse and a grandson, Paul Mick.
Mary was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She had a green thumb especially roses and greatly enjoyed her flower gardening, however arthritis put an end to her gardening. From her wheel chair, she became an avid bird watcher, especially cardinals. In Jan's home she cared affectionately for her grand pets, Angel and Quentin.
Mary and family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy, especially Becca and Jodee for the exceptional care and kindness given during Mary's last days. Also the staff on 7th floor at Mercy and Dr. Thomas Schroeder and staff. Dr Boatman and Pam, your loving care and encouragement over the years kept Mom with us far longer than expected, no words can express our gratitude. Memorial donations may be given to Hospice of Mercy in Mary's name.

Services with military honors at 10:30 AM Thursday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dan Clark-Bridges of Hope Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 9 PM on Wednesday and at the chapel after 9:30 AM on Thursday.
Survivors include his wife Brooke, two sons David Michael Kirchhoff Jr. of Cedar Rapids, and Sean Patrick Lekin of Boone, Iowa, three step-daughters Ashley RaeAnne, Aubrey Jo, and April Rain all of Anamosa, his parents Larry and Nancy Kirchhoff of Cedar Rapids, one brother Shawn Cecil of Louisville, Kentucky, and a half brother Michael Cecil of Louisville, Kentucky, two sisters Dawn Kirchhoff of Oelwein and Denise Kirchhoff of Cedar Rapids, and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
David was born April 12, 1972 in Dubuque, Iowa. He graduated from Metro High School in Cedar Rapids in 1992. He married Brooke Zimmerman on April 19, 2003, at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. He was a truck driver serving with the Iowa Army National Guard Detachment 1, 2168th Transportation Company in Cedar Rapids, serving in Iraq. He was also a truck driver for Linn Star Transfer Inc.
David was a loving husband, devoted father to his sons and his stepdaughters, a loving son and a supportive brother. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Instead of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Evelyn R. Burns, 80, of 1080 29th St. in Marion died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003 at St. Lukes Hospital after a short illness. Services at 3 PM on Wed. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Mike Morgan and Rev. Nick Longworth will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the Chapel after 2 PM on Wed.
Survivors include two sons, Clarence and his wife, Katelyn of Marshalltown, Steven and his wife, Mary of Marion and two daughters, Linda Schantz and her husband, Larry of Amana and Barbara Burns Jordan of Ireland. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren and many great and step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Burns and a son in law, John Jordan.
Evelyn was born on March 16, 1923 in Marion, the daughter of Charles and June Morehouse Dukek. She married Rev. Clarence R. Burns on Dec. 29, 1942 in Washington, D.C. He died in 1995. Evelyn graduated from Coe College in 1972 and was a substitute teacher for several years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion. Memorial donation may be given to St. Lukes Hospice in Evelyn's name.
