Nadine E. Trachta, 81, of Cedar Rapids died at Northbrook Manor on Wed. March 3, 2004 after short illness. Services at 10 AM on Sat. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.
Survivors include four sons, Dennis W. and his wife, Connie, Thomas and his wife, JoAnn all of Cedar Rapids, John P. and wife, Terrie of Troy Mills and Michael and his wife, Debbie of Fairfax. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Cindy Gross and Douglas, Adam, Aimee, Eric and Jeff Trachta. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Parents, Ellen Daily and Vivian Newell.
Nadine was born on Nov. 29, 1922 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of George and Julia Swan. She married William V. Trachta Jr. on May 6, 1945 in Washington, Iowa. He died in Sept. 2003. Nadine was the owner and administrator of the Maple Lawn Home for the Aged for 47 years, retiring in 1991. She loved time spent with her family and enjoyed travel, fishing, cooking, ice cream and especially her cats. A memorial fund has been established in Nadine's name.

William K. 'Bill' Shaffer

William K. “Bill” Shaffer, 83, of Toddville, died Saturday, February 28, 2004, in his home following a long illness. Memorial services with military honors at 1 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. James Adix of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will officiate. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Monday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Barbara “Bobbie”, a daughter Judy (Ford) Shoudy, four sons Mike (Becky) Shaffer, Jeff (Sharon) Shaffer, Chris (Julie) Shaffer, all of Cedar Rapids, and Tim (Carla) Shaffer of Earlville, a sister-in-law Betty Anderson of Cedar Rapids, seventeen grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bill was born July 21, 1920, in Cedar Rapids to Wallace Nathan and Marguerite Hoffer Shaffer. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1939 and from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1952. He married Barbara “Bobbie” Anderson on May 8, 1943 in Phoenix, Arizona. He retired in 1989 from the City of Cedar Rapids Engineering Department after 36 years. He served in the Army during WW II.

The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Hospice or to Camp Courageous, 12007 190th St., Monticello, Iowa

Lois R. Loomis, 79, of 2014 Foxbourne SE, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, in Northbrook Manor Care Center following a long illness. Services at 1 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Jerry Springston of First Baptist Church-Church of the Brethren will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Saturday.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years Chuck, two sons James and wife Peggy and David and wife Lorrelle all of Cedar Rapids, a sister Alice Budde and husband Jerry of St. Paul, Minnesota, a brother Clifford Ott and wife Kay of East Alton, Illinois, and two grandchildren, David J. and Matthew J. Loomis. She was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Ella Bishoff Ott.
Lois was born April 4, 1924 in Dubuque, Iowa. The family later moved to Wabasha, Minnesota where she graduated from Wabasha High School and then moved to Cedar Rapids where she graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital as a Registered Nurse.
Lois was a member of First Baptist Church where she served as a Circle Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and treasurer. She served as a cub scout den mother, on the YWCA Board, and Children’s Home Board. She was a member of PEO Chapter GM, and a lifetime member of St. Luke’s Auxiliary.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Luke’s or to St. Luke’s Health Care Foundation.

Richard N. “Dick” Buchheim, 70, of 2214 B Ave NE, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center following an extended illness. Memorial services with military honors at 3 PM Thursday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Fran Griffeth will officiate. Inurnment in Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may register at the chapel after 2:30 PM on Thursday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include four sons Richard and wife Gwen of Marion, Randy, Robert and wife Alicia, and Ryan, and a daughter Rhonda Tang and husband Gene all of Cedar Rapids, a brother Ben and wife Rogene of Marion, a brother-in-law Harvey Wilson of West Grove, Iowa, a sister in law Judy Rupe of Coggon, and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Wanda.
Richard was born September 14, 1933 in Clayton County, Iowa, to Allison and Morga Buchheim. He married Wanda L. Wilson on February 4, 1956 in Manchester. She died July 23, 1985. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, and worked as a machinist at Cherry Burrell for over 30 years retiring in 1994. He was a member of VFW Post No 788.
Military honors by VFW Post No 788.
Instead of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Edith P. Lekin

Edith P. Lekin, 82, 61 29th Ave SW died Sunday, February 22, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services: 1:00 P.M. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Will Jackson of Hus Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Surviving are four daughters, Jolane Berns and husband James of Marion, Norma Filmore of Cedar Rapids, Margo Mucci and husband Ronald of Brook Park, Ohio and Wendy Armstrong and husband Terry of Central City; a sister, Barb Roberts and husband Wayne of Muscatine; a brother, James Postel and wife Gloria of Oxnard, CA; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Thomas in 1986, and two sisters.
Edith was born October 16, 1921 in Brandon the daughter of James F. and Margaret (Evans) Postel. She married Thomas Henry Lekin on May 5, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. She had been an information clerk at Mercy Medical Center and a homemaker. She attended Hus Presbyterian Church. Edith will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
A memorial fund has been established.

Jane Ardath Miller

Jane A. Miller, 63, 3299 2nd Street, Marion died Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at her home following a long illness. Services: 11:00 A.M. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Marion. There is no visitation. Inurnment is private. The Rev. Howard Chapman will officiate. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband John; three daughters, Teresa Reuter, husband Tom, and two children, A.J. and Michael of Monticello, Tamara Trca, husband David, and three children, London, Scout, and Saige of Robins, and Ann Marie, husband Gary, and their child, Adriana of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Nancy Marmann of Cedar Rapids and Marian Urbanek of Wisconsin.
Jane was born April 12, 1940 in Floyd County the daughter of T. Adrian and Ruth (Krause) Burlingham. She married John W. Miller on July 24, 1966 in Cedar Rapids. Jane worked at Square D from 1959 until 1970, and was an inspector for Rockwell Collins from 1972 until 1999. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1959 and attended the Paris Academy of Cosmetology. She was a Hospice of Mercy volunteer, and was one of the first Brownie Leaders in Newhall. Jane attended Central Park Presbyterian Church, the Newhall Church and was a 27 year member of First Presbyterian Church in Marion. She taught Sunday school for 35 years, and served as a deacon and elder.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy or to a charity of donor's choice.

Eugene J. White, 79, of Heritage Nursing and Rehab died there on Wed. Feb. 18, 2004 after an extended illness. Services with military rites at 11 AM on Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where friends may call after 10 AM on Tuesday. Rev. Fran Griffeth will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Park cemetery . Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, a daughter, Nancy Franey and her husband, Doug of Cedar Rapids, a son, Jeffrey and his friend, Julie Baclene of West Sacramento, CA. and a sister Frances Hobbs of Kellogg. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lorelei Cairy, Colin and Micaela Franey. He as proceeded in death by four brothers, Paul, Gerald, Wallace and Connie and a sister, Ann Paul.
Gene was born on June 28, 1924 in Osceola, the son of Eugene and Lura Rhone White. He married Evelyn L. Wiklund on April 7, 1946 in Seneca, KA. Gene worked at Dearborn Brass Co. and later retired from Cryovac as an engineer after 10 years of service. He was a member of VFW Post No. 788 and served in the Army Infantry in the Pacific during WWII, receiving the Bronze Star for bravery. Gene was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Evelyn. A memorial fund has been established in Gene's name.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years James, four sons, James and wife Irene of Boulder, Colorado, Terry and wife Diane of Atlanta, Georgia, Chad and wife Jean Merkelbach of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and Matthew of Little Rock, Arkansas, two daughters Leah Noelle and husband Kirk Eschliman of Waterloo, and Robin Hobbs and husband Charles of Everson, Washington, a brother Beal Gleason and wife Rodean of Covington, New Mexico, and three sisters Maxine Dobrin of Houston, Texas, Margaret Skromme and husband Lawrence of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Marie Anderson and husband Dean of Iowa City, and 15 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
LeAnne was born June 11, 1929 in Jesup, Iowa to Max and Leila Freeman Gleason. She graduated from Vinton High School and received her teaching degree from Iowa State Teachers College. She married James H. Smittkamp on August 17, 1951 in Cedar Rapids. She taught school in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids for over 33 years, and was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. She was a Life Master bridge player who enjoyed cats, flowers, gardening, crafts, and collecting Antiques. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established.
