Mercedes H. Janda 90, of 1802 Mallory St. SW, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at her daughter’s home in Warrenton, Missouri, following a short illness. Services at 10 AM Friday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Will Jackson of Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday and at the chapel after 9:30 AM on Friday.
Survivors include a son Jon and wife JoAnn “Jodie” of Cedar Rapids, a daughter Sally McLuckie and husband Steve of Warrenton, Missouri, a brother Jack Shoberg and wife Gerry of Edina, Minnesota, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 7 brothers and sisters.
Mercedes was born December 16, 1913, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Anthony and Irene Flow Shoberg. She married Wesley J. Janda on November 18, 1933 in Rock Island, Illinois. He died November 7, 1994. She was a secretary for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools from 1955 to 1977. She was a member of Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed quilting, baking, golfing, and gardening. She especially enjoyed socializing with her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2808 Schaefer Dr. SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52403, or to Camp Courageous Of Iowa, 12007 190th Street, Monticello, Iowa 52310.

Richard D. Drievold

Richard D. Drievold, 61, of 1530 7th Ave SE, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services with military honors at 1 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Kay Slocum of the First Lutheran Church will officiate. Graveside services and burial at the Rock Island National cemetery at 11 AM Monday. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Saturday.
Survivors include his wife Betty, four children, Steve (Valeria) Schnor of North Liberty, Scott (Pauline) Schnor of Shellsburg, Shelly (Lane) Lafler and Sandy (Jim) West both of West Branch, a brother Robert (Diane) Drievold of Cedar Rapids, sisters Anna Williamson, and Helen (Neil) Ricklefs both of Cedar Rapids, and Sharon (Mark) Brown of Utah, 6 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his special pets Jasper and Panda. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Richard was born November 24, 1942 in Decorah, Iowa to Agnes and Bennie Drievold. He attended McKinley High School. He served in the Army stationed in Korea from 1968 to 1970. He married Betty Crippen on January 24, 1975 in Cedar Rapids. He was a truck driver for B. L. Anderson for 19 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and Hanford American Legion Post No 5. He enjoyed camping, playing bingo, and was an avid race car fan.
Richard will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Military honors by Hanford American Legion Post No 5.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Samantha Alivia Ahrens

Samantha Alivia Ahrens, infant daughter of Amy Ullrick and Tim Ahrens of Marion, was born silently into this world on Saturday, January 10, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Private family services will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2004, in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with Rev. Howard Chapman of the First Presbyterian Church in Marion officiating. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include her parents Amy Ullrick and Tim Ahrens of Marion, grandparents, Cynthia Ullrick of Hiawatha, Robert and Glenda Ullrick of Ottumwa, and William and Linda Ahrens of Marion, and a great-grandmother Jeanine Norris of Pratt, Kansas.
A little time in our arms, forever in our hearts. Goodbye our precious Samantha, until we meet again.
Instead of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Foundation for the Sammy Project.

Francee A. Berry, born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and being a lifelong resident, died January 26, 2004 in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services at 10 AM Saturday in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial in St. John's cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Friday with a Wake service beginning at 5 PM.
Survivors include a son Philip Edward Berry and wife Vicky of Santiago, Chile, five grandchildren, Michelle, Jeremy, Josefina, Victoria, and Felipe, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, and a foster son Thomas H. McGowan and family of New Fairfield, Conn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Agnes Mary Martin Bizulis, a son Ronald, a brother Anthony Bizulis, and two sisters Helen Daggett and Sister Mary Agnesian BVM.
Francee was a attendance secretary for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools for 25 years.
Francee had attended Mount Mercy College and Kirkwood Community College. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, National American Business Women’s Association, and Cedar Rapids Association of Educational Office Personnel.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for masses for Francee.

Frederick Ray Buchanan Jr.

Frederick R. Buchanan Jr. 74, a resident of Living Center West died there Tuesday January 20, 2004 following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday at cedar memorial Chapel Of Memories by the Rev. Terry Seufferlein. Friends may call on Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and after 10:30 a.m. at the chapel on Saturday. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery .

Survivors include a sister in law, Frances Buchanan of Phoenix, Arizona, a nephew, Jim Buchanan of Columbus, Ohio, and a niece, Joan Bradley of Lincoln, California.

Also surviving are many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Millard Buchanan.

Frederick was born January 30, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frederick and Agnus Stolba Buchanan Sr. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1948. He was a manager at Cedar Rapids Sporting Goods Store and was also employed at LaPlante Choate Co., Kirkwood Community College and Cryovac. Frederick was a sports trainer for Jefferson and Roosevelt High School. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 788, American Legion Hanford Post # 5, and Jefferson Booster Club. He was past secretary of Cedar Rapids Softball Association, past president of Evening Lions Club and Speed Skating Association and board member and past president of Cedar Rapids Sports Club. He was elected into the Jefferson Hall Of Fame, Track Hall Of Fame, Softball Hall Of Fame and Iowa Speed Skating Hall Of Fame. In 1972 he received Outstanding Citizen Award for his contribution to metro sports by the Cedar Rapids Sports Club. Frederick served in the Army during the Korean War with the 1st Calvary Division.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame.

Hazel A. DeWees

Hazel Drake DeWees. 88,of the Meth-Wick Community died there on Sat. Jan. 17, 2004 after a long illness. Services at 11 AM on Sat. at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Dr. James Chesnutt and the Rev. Pamela Holt will officiate. Family burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery at 10:15 AM on Sat. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy DeWees and her husband, Tom Chancellor of Ft. Worth, TX., a son, Joseph and his wife, Marilyn of St. Cloud, FL. and a sister, Marian Justice of Denison. She is also survived by two grandchildren, David DeWees of International Falls, MN. And Mishelle DeWees of San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon in 1979 and three sisters, Evelyn Holdsworth, Beulah Olson and Ruth KcKinney.
Hazel was born on Feb. 5, 1915 in Manilla, Iowa the daughter of Arthur and Theresa Sykes Drake. She graduated from Iowa State Teacher College in 1936. Hazel married Sheldon A. DeWees on May 1, 1943 in Kahoka, MO. She was a homemaker, a member of First Christian Church and the Opti-Mrs Club. Memorial donations may be given to Amenity Hospice or the First Christian Church. Per Hazel's request, the casket will be closed at all times. The family would like to thank the Meth-Wick Community and Amenity Hospice for their loving care of Hazel.

Dorothy Louise Tharalson
April 21, 1941 - January 15, 2004

Dorothy Louise Tharalson, 62, of 3180 24th Ave, Marion, died Thursday, January 15, 2004, in her home after a short but brave battle against lung cancer. Memorial services at 11 AM Saturday in Hope United Church of Christ in Hiawatha. Visitation with the family from 7 to 9 PM on Friday also at the Church. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include her husband Nick, her mother, Mable Ellis of Luverne, Minnesota, two sisters, Barbara and Donna of Mitchell, South Dakota, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl LaFortune, and a sister Jeannette Eiss.
Dorothy was born April 21, 1941 in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Earl and Mable LaFortune. She spent her childhood there, and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1959. She took a secretarial course in Mankato, Minnesota, and joined the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pierre, South Dakota, in 1960. She met her future husband Nick, there and after a stint in New Town, North Dakota, with the BIA, they were married on June 12, 1971 in Mitchell, South Dakota. They lived in Sturgis, South Dakota at that time, and Dorothy went to work with the United States Air Force as a civilian employee at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City. She later moved to Mason City, Iowa, with her husband and joined the Social Security Administration, with who she remained during subsequent moves to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She took early retirement from government service in 1988, after several temporary jobs, joined Videa Limited as their receptionist in 1991 and was employed there up to the time of her death. She was active in Hope United Church Of Christ in Hiawatha, and made many friends wherever she was. She was loved, and will be sorely missed by her husband, her family, and all her friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hope United Church Of Christ in Hiawatha.

David John 'D.J.' Webster

David John 'D. J.' Webster, 43, of 1440 Blairs Ferry Rd, Hiawatha, passed away at his home over the weekend. Services at 3 PM Friday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer of St. Paul's United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday and and at the chapel after 2:30 PM on Friday.
Survivors include his parents David and Janet (Young) Webster of Cedar Rapids, his sisters, Susan Titus (Thomas) of Cedar Rapids, Elizabeth Johannsen (Jeffrey) of Bettendorf, and Kathryn Buwalda (Harley) of Germany, his Aunt Margaret Willasson of Cedar Rapids, his Aunt Ruth Poore (Rev. Elwood) of Texas, and Uncle Charles Webster (Lucy) of Florida, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and a grandnephew and a grandniece whom he dearly loved. Special thanks to Dave's friends Lori and Steve Mornini for the great times they spent with him.
David was born July 10, 1960, in Cedar Rapids. He was a 1979 graduate of Washington High School. He spent his freshman and sophomore years at Iowa Central College, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Sociology in 1986 from UNI. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He worked for the Cedar Rapids Country Club during his summer vacations. He also worked for Mercy Medical Center. He was a 14 year employee of the FEDEX Corp. He loved everyone of his jobs.
Dave spent his leisure time making music CD's with his pal Steve Mornini.
He and his Dad took numerous trips 'Boys-Day-Out' around Iowa, especially to the Mississippi. They made videos of the Iowa Country side and especially of his Dad.
D. J. was a wonderful fellow, and greatly loved by all who knew him. 'See you later Dave.'
