Peter J. Funcke, 100, of Willow Gardens died there on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 after a brief illness. Services at 1 PM on Wed. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday where there will be a vigil service at 6:30 PM.
Survivors include two sons, Jack and his wife, Marcia of Cedar Rapids and Dr. William and his wife, Verna of Bever Dam, WI. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, two-step grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and special friends, Ann and Kevin Bader. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Kent and two sisters, Katherine and Barbara.
Peter was born on Oct. 27, 1903 in Cedar Rapids, the son of William and Sarah Hughes Funcke. He married Leona M. Prochaska on Aug. 26, 1925 in Cedar Rapids. She died in 1998. Peter was a police office for the Cedar Rapids Police Dept., retiring in 1952. He witnessed the squad's Model A Fords being outfitted with the first 2-way radios and winning many sharp shooting awards. He was the oldest living former Cedar Rapids police officer. He then worked at Collins Radio, retiring in 1966. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and the Policeman's Protective Association. Throughout his life, Peter set the standard for a family legacy of honesty, integrity, kindness, gentleness and faith. Peter rode his bicycle daily until the age of 92, he loved to work with wood and play golf. In his teens he was painted by the artist, Grant Wood and was famous for his corny jokes. Memorial donation may be given to St. Matthew Catholic Church in Peters name. 'Godspeed Grandpa Pete' We love you forever.

Naomi G. Brower, 83, of 345 Marion Blvd, Marion, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, January 15, 2004, at home following a short illness. Services at 1 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Saturday.
Survivors include two sons Mark and Brian both of Cedar Rapids, a daughter Sally Allen and husband Jeff of Solon, and an estranged daughter Susan Clark of Cedar Rapids, and two grandchildren Cherie and Jason Allen. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers Lloyd and Leonard.
Naomi was born March 1, 1920 in East Union, Kentucky to James and Susan Kirby Grimes. At the age of 19 she received a Private Pilots License. She married H. Paul Brower on August 28, 1948 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He died in 1989. Naomi had been a switchboard operator with the F.B.I. for J. Edgar Hoover in Washington, D.C. In Cedar Rapids she worked in food service for the Community Schools. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1073 Rockford Rd SW Ste G, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, or the Iowa Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis, 950 Office Park Rd, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265.

Frederick Melvin Melton

Frederick Melvin Melton, 74, of 1618 Hollywood Blvd. NE died Monday Jan. 12, 2004 at Living Center West after a short illness. Services at 3 PM on Sat. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Per Fred's request, the casket will be closed at all times. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Fred was born on June 20, 1929 in Centerville, the son of Albert and Carrie Irene Parcel. He graduated form Centerville High School in 1947. On July 6, 1948 he joined the US Army and served in the Japanese Occupation as a military policeman and administrative clerk. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Japanese Occupation Metal, National Defense Service Medal and an Honorable Discharge on June 10, 1952 after serving 47 months.
He was employed at Collins Radio, retiring in Dec. 31, 1985. He married Carolyn Ann Harvard in 1957 in Cedar Rapids. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Dr. Jon Melton and his wife Donna of Mechanicsburg, PA., Brian Melton of Cedar Rapids, a brother, Robert Melton and a sister, Mary Louise Doggett of Numa , Iowa. He is also survived by a grandson, Daniel Frederick Melton of Mechanicsburg, PA. and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was a good husband, father and grandpa. He had a beautiful smile and great sense of humor. He was an avid photographer, operating his own dark room and developed many black and white photos. He was member of Crescent Lodge and Amber Grotto.
Fred trusted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior. One of Fred's favorite bible verses was, John 14:6 'Jesus said; I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me'.

John 'Butch' Wawro
February 25, 1941 - January 12, 2004

John 'Butch' Wawro, 62, 633 Carroll Dr. SE died suddenly Monday, January 12, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Burial: St. John's cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM Friday where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 P.M.. The Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate.
Survivors include a son, Mike Wawro and his wife Tammy of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Dawn Ellis and her husband Jeff of Cedar Rapids; his fiancée, Sue Ruzicka and her loving family of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Carole Wawro of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Drew and Drake Wawro both of Cedar Rapids and Jeffrey, Jennifer, and Jessica Ellis of Georgia; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Cruise and her husband Lavern of Hale; and two brothers-in-law, Leroy Krutzfield and his wife Sherry of Cedar Rapids, and Larry Krutzfield and his wife Marie of Anamosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Judy in 1999; and two sisters, Mary Ann Wawro in 1943 and Susie Wawro in 2000.
Butch was born February 25, 1941 in Cedar Rapids the beloved son of John and Georgia (Marousek) Wawro. He married Judy Krutzfield on August 6, 1966 in Central City. Butch was an electrician for 44 years working for Nelson Electric until his retirement in June 2003. He was a proud member of IBEW Local #405, St. Matthew Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus #909. Butch enjoyed fishing, especially with his grandson Drake, and he enjoyed his short but wonderful time he had at his cabin in Minnesota.

Frances Mae Clauson, 90, life long resident of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004, in the Hiawatha Care Center following a long illness. Service at 9 AM Friday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Carroll Brown will officiate. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may register at the chapel after 8:30 AM on Friday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include her loving family, Nancy and husband Morris Kaplan of Cedar Rapids, Jim Clauson and wife Rosalyn of Marion, and Larry Clauson and wife Linda of Polk City, Iowa, seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a nephew Tom Nelson. She was preceded in death by her husband John G. Clauson and sister Thora Nelson.
Frances was born September 29, 1913 in Cedar Rapids. She married John G. Clauson on January 9, 1936 in Galena, Illinois.She was a longtime active member of Salem United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Frances Marie Hensley, 74, of 4845 Johnson Ave NW, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services will be at 10 AM Saturday in the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lidgerwood, North Dakota, with visitation from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the church with a wake service at 7 PM. Visitation in Cedar Rapids is from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday in Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. Burial in Calvary cemetery in Lidgerwood, North Dakota.
Survivors include her children, Diane Burns of Neenah, Wisconsin, William J. Hensley and wife Jacquie of Palo, Lynn Horton of Cedar Rapids, Jan Eckhardt and husband William of Swisher, Chuck Hensley and wife Diane of Clive, Iowa, and Robert Hensley of Huxley, Iowa, her sister Marcella Blazek of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and five grandchildren, Jennifer Horton and Dennis O'Toole both of Cedar Rapids, and Adam, Eric, and Owen Hensley all of Clive, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers John, Jim, and Frank Pahl.
Frances was born March 12, 1929 in Geneseo, North Dakota to Frank and Frances Riba Pahl. She was a volunteer at the Linn Council on Aging. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, and enjoyed animals, gardening, fishing, John Wayne movies, dancing, playing monopoly, and doing crossword puzzles.
Frances was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, 7411 Mt. Vernon Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52403.

Dennis P. Ochs
December 30, 1959 - January 11, 2004

Dennis P. Ochs, 44, of 1349 Highwood Dr. NW, died Sunday, January 11, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services at 11 AM Thursday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday with a wake service beginning at 7 PM.
Survivors include his mother Eileen Ochs-Binger of Cedar Rapids, his brothers and sisters Terri Liedtke and husband Gary, Tim Ochs and wife Judy, Andrea Ochs, and a brother Carl Ochs all of Cedar Rapids, and a sister Mary Ann Nielsen and husband Bill of West Chester, Pa.Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Kory Ochs with the US Navy in Newport News, Virginia, Cassie and Keagan Ochs, Rachel and Tim Liedtke, and Fred and Patricia Ochs all of Cedar Rapids, and Annie and Abbie Nielsen of West Chester, Pa. He was preceded in death by his father Patrick C. Ochs in 1987, and a nephew Samuel E. Ochs in 1999.
Dennis was born December 30, 1959 in Dubuque, Ia. to Patrick and Eileen Smith Ochs, and later moved with his family to Cedar Rapids. He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. He worked at Edgewood Road Hardees for several years. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He participated in the 1974 and 1975 Special Olympics, winning gold and bronze medals in field and track. In 1994 he received a kidney transplant, with his brother Tim being the donor. His corneas were donated to the University of Iowa Eye Bank. Dennis loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, taking long walks in the evening, swimming, bowling, and playing pool. He also enjoyed watching WWE wrestling and attended shows whenever they came to Cedar Rapids. His quick wit and dry sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial fund has been established. A very special thanks to Mercy Medical Center CCU, Zone 41, and the girls in Endoscopy, who all befriended him and made him feel like one of the gang!

Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday and at the chapel after 8:30 AM on Thursday.
Survivors include a daughter Julie Benesh of Chicago, Illinois and her significant other Roman Bonzon of Rock Island, Illinois, a brother Charles and a sister Joan Young address unknown. preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers Harold and Robert.
Edward was born October 28, 1922 in Cedar Rapids to Charles and Zilpha Wilson Benesh. He married Shirley Thomas on January 1, 1945 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Shirley died August 8, 1986. He worked for Collins-Rockwell for 30 years in engineering and as a technical writer. He was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, American Legion Hanford Post No 5, and a lifetime member of the Cedar Rapids Coin Club. He served during WW II in the Army Air Corps.
