Marjorie L. Warren, 83, of Evergreen Estates, formerly a 60 year resident of Des Moines died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Service: 10:00 A.M. Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Burial: 3:30 P.M. Monday at Glendale cemetery in Des Moines. Friends may call from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home with a Vigil Service at 3:00 P.M. The Rev. Neil Manternach will officiate.
Survivors include her daughter, Marla Valliere of Cedar Rapids; three granddaughters, Nicole Valliere of Cedar Rapids, Michele Valliere of Davenport, and Mary Valliere of Scottsdale, AZ; a sister, Betty Southwick of Pueblo, CO; several nieces and nephews including one special nephew, William Bond.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers, Gene Barrus, Charles Barrus, Jr., and Dale Barrus; and four sisters, Mary Ann Bond, Dorothy Allgeyer, Edna O'Farrell, and Ruth Heimke.
Marjorie was born March 26, 1921 in Winterset the daughter of Charles Sr. and Hazel (Reese) Barrus. She married Thomas F. Warren on May 29, 1948 in Des Moines. He passed away on November 29, 1973. Marjorie worked in the dietary department at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines from 1973 to 1986. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and the Retiree's Luncheon for Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Marjorie's joy in her life was her three granddaughters. She had a great love of family, friends, animals, and she loved the outdoors.
Memorials may be made to Evergreen Estates or to the Dialysis Department at Mercy Medical Center.

Marie A. Magner
November 22, 1911 - July 22, 2004

Marie A. Magner, 92, of Mercy Hallmar died there on Thursday, July 22, 2004 after a brief illness. Services at 10 AM on Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Burial at 2:30 PM on Monday at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Waukon. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday where a rosary will be recited at 4 PM. There will also be a visitation after 9 AM on Monday at the Church.
Survivors include her children, Dr. Clement Magner of Milwaukee, WI., Mary L. Magner and her husband Steve Carpenter of Cedar Rapids, Thomas Magner and his wife, Peggy of Independence, Shirley Magner of Marion and a daughter in law, Cheryl Magner of Greendale, WI. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, Annette (Andrew) Clements, Mike Magner, Peter Balik (Carmen Anderson), Dave (Sarah) Magner, Sara (Rob) Scott, Jeremiah Balik, Kelly (Michael) Panoch, Tim Magner, Theresa (Tim) Simon, Annie, Molly, Becky, and Dan Magner, six great grandchildren, Allison, Megan and Mitchell Clements, Andrew Magner and Isaac and Olivia Scott. She was preceded in death by a son, Bob, two brothers, Thomas and Charles Tierney and a sister, Kathryn Schulte.
Marie was born on Nov. 22, 1911 in Hanover, the daughter of Thomas and Anna Griffin Tierney. She married Paul R. Magner on Jan. 8, 1935 in Hanover. He died in 2000. Marie worked in food service at the University of Iowa for 15 years and retired from Mercy Hospital after 10 years of service. She was a devoted member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. She cherished her role, as wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her loving family. A memorial fund has been established in Marie's name.

James Mittan
November 13, 1927 - July 27, 2004

Jim Mittan, 76, 1271 29th St. NE died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at Mercy Hallmar following a brief illness. Memorial Service: 2:00 P.M. Saturday at First Congregational Church, 361 17th St. SE. The Rev. William J. Jamison will officiate.
Surviving in addition to his wife Jeannine are two sons, Robert Mittan and wife Catalina of Charlotte, NC and Joseph Mittan and wife Diane of Holmen, WI; two daughters, Rebecca Hinton and husband Arthur of Holmen, WI and Lisa Leesekamp and husband Ed of Denver, CO; and eight grandchildren, Cinnamon Mittan, Brie Mittan, Jasmine Leesekamp, Mariah Leesekamp, Samuel Mittan, Sarah Paoli, Katelyn Mittan and Elizabeth Mittan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Samuel Mittan and a sister Gloria Meyers.
Jim was born to Thelma Mittan Reed Young on November 13, 1927 in Cedar Rapids. He married Jeannine Williamson on August 16, 1947 in Cedar Rapids. He was the owner and operator of Carpetland from 1959 until his retirement. Following his retirement, he did sales training for the floor covering industry. Jim was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Sertoma, Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge #263, the Cedar Rapids Consistory, and the El Kahir Shrine. He was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. at El Kahir. Jim was a long time member of First Congregational Church, a member of Elmcrest Country Club, and was an avid golfer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the YMCA Campership.

Ralph H. Roberts
April 23, 1911 - July 27, 2004

Ralph H. Roberts, 93, a resident of Mercy Hallmar , formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center, following a short illness. Services at 10:30 AM Friday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Pastor Roger White of the Gladbrook United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial with military honors in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the chapel after 10 AM on Friday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include a son John and wife Pat of Cedar Rapids, a daughter Becky Fish and husband Charles of Gladbrook, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister Susan Roberts Hammett.
Ralph was born April 23, 1911 in Yankton, South Dakota to Judson Amos and Viola Griffiths Roberts. He married Mary Marquis on April 10, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri. Ralph was the bandleader of “Howdy Roberts and WMT Rangers,” and was an announcer for the Musical Clock retiring in 1974 after over forty years on the radio.
He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and was a WW II US Army Veteran.

Edward J. Altorfer

Edward J. Altorfer, 89, of 2115 First Ave SE, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in his home following a sudden illness. Private services will be held with Rev. Herbert Knudten officiating. Entombment in Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Friday.
Survivors include four sons Donald and wife Patricia of Springfield, Illinois, James and wife Sharon, Bruce and wife Janis, and Richard and wife Candy all of Cedar Rapids, a brother John H. Altorfer of Tucson, Arizona, ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister Katherine Swain, and a brother Richard.
Edward was born December 30, 1914 in Roanoke, Illinois to Silas and Elizabeth Sauder Altorfer. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1936. He married Betty Fitton on June 22, 1940 in Peoria, Illinois. She died June 19, 2002. He founded Altorfer Inc. a Caterpillar dealership in 1957, and was presently serving as Chairman Emeritus of the Board. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club, Elks Club, served on the Cedar Rapids Airport Commission, and was a member of the Church of the Red Rock in Sedona, Arizona.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 3 to 7 PM on Sunday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Monday.
Survivors include her husband Patric, two sons Richard Patric Hills of Marion, and Ryan Alan Hills of Cedar Rapids, her father Arthur Drtina of Marion, a brother Donald Drtina and wife Deanna of Central City, two sisters Belinda Drtina and significant other Paul Carpenter of Colville, Washington, and Janel Johnson and significant other Steve Gourley of Delhi, 2 grandchildren, and a sister in law Teresa Drtina of Marion. She was preceded in death by her mother Theola Drtina, and a brother Bud Drtina.
Debra was born December 4, 1952 in Cresco, Iowa. She married Patric A. Hills on May 20, 1972 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She worked for 31 years for Rockwell-Collins as a PC Board Processor. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, and greatly enjoyed her family and her two dogs Charlene and Harley.
A memorial fund has been established.

Robert L. Bowen

Robert L. Bowen, 85, of Anamosa, formerly of Marion, died Friday, July 30, 2004, in the Anamosa Care Center following a long illness. Services at 1 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dave Higdon will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Monday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 64 years, Mable, a daughter Pam Silver and husband Wayne of Cedar Rapids, six grandsons, Jeffery Silver and wife Melinda of Lisbon, Robert Silver, Shawn Silver and wife Amy, and Cory Silver all of Cedar Rapids, Bill Bowen of Afton, Iowa, and Doug Bowen of Arvada, Colorado, and a daughter in law Helen McNaught of Afton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a son David and two brothers Harold and Cecil.
Robert was born June 14, 1919 in Linn County to Robert and Mary Firetag Bowen. He married Mable Carlson on August 16, 1940 in Cedar Rapids. He retired from farming in 1986 after 45 years. He enjoyed flowers, gardening, tree planting, and like to travel. For may years he was a member of Farm Bureau.
A memorial fund has been established.

Fran Griffeth will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Wed.
Survivors include his parents, Robert and Pat Leahy of Cedar Rapids, two sisters, Kim Mumm and family of Covington and Amber Leahy of Marion. He was preceded in death by a sister, Devanne and his grandparents.
Shawn was born on July 22, 1960 in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Metro High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and talking on the CB Radio. Memorial donations may be given to the American Diabetes Association in Shawn's name.
