Abby Amelia Bowman: 19, died Sunday night, July 25, 2004 from injuries suffered in a car/pedestrian accident in downtown Cedar Rapids. A memorial gathering and celebration of Abby’s life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at People’s Unitarian Church, Cedar Rapids, led by the Rev. Linda Hansen. Please bring your remembrances to share. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery .
Abby was born on October 10, 1984. She was the loving daughter of Carrie Kriz (Cedar Rapids) and Charles Bowman (Central City). Abby attended Coggon Elementary School, Troy Mills Middle School and graduated from Washington High School in 2003. She was currently taking classes toward the surgical technologist program at Kirkwood Community College. Abby worked part time at The History Center, Cottage Grove Place and most recently, the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Abby was a precocious child, an inquisitive, fun-loving girl and a vivacious, beautiful young woman who was just embarking on life’s journey. She had wide-ranging interests from forensic science to her pet rats. She loved animals, nature, singing, music and multicultural diversity. Abby had a compassionate heart, quick-silver temper, offbeat sense of humor and radiant smile. She was a kind and gentle spirit who touched all who knew her.
Survivors include: her parents, grandparents Darlene and Richard Kriz of Cedar Rapids and Edith LeMoind of Iowa Falls; aunts and uncles, Amy and Mark Ackman of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer and Douglas Slauson of Swisher and Kathryn Bowman Crowley of Ankeny; cousins, Aaron and Sierra Ackman, Anne and Katie Slauson, Tammy Crowley Ross and Christopher Crowley. Abby is also survived by a large extended family and many many friends, including special friend, Tim Bascom. She was preceded in death by a grandfather, Stanton LeMoind. We all loved her and will miss her deeply.
A memorial fund has been established in Abby’s memory.

Dale Allen McNeal

Dale A. McNeal, 66, 140 Carnaby Dr. NE died Monday, August 2, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital following a sudden illness. Graveside service: 1:00 P.M. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery , Chapel Garden Addition. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Surviving in addition to his wife Jalaa are two brothers, Loren McNeal of Protivin and Lyle McNeal of Hiawatha; a niece, Carol Gongwer of Marion; special pets, Gus, Tim, and Muffet; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joe McNeal and Dean McNeal.; and his sister, Audrey Shultz.
Dale was born March 14, 1938 in Center Point the son of Avery J. and Bessie R. (Reid) McNeal. He married Jalaa Domer on July 11, 1964 in Cedar Rapids. He was a security administrator at Rockwell until his retirement in 1998. Dale attended Center Point High School and graduated from Coe College. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Center Point Public Library, 1025 Franklin St., Center Point, Iowa 52213.

Justin W. (Doc) Albright

Justin W. (Doc) Albright, 95, of Cottage Grove Place, 2115 First Ave. S.E., died Thursday at his residence following a brief illness. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by Rev. Lloyd E. Brockmeyer, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment: St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Columbarium. Friends may greet the family from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include his son Carlton and wife Patricia, of New York City; five grandchildren, Sarah of Canton, Massachusetts, Nathanael, Carlton Williams (“Will”) and David Mobley, all of New York City and Diana Bates of Santa Monica, California.
His wife Mildred, parents, brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Justin was the oldest of six children, born October 14, 1908, in Lisbon, Iowa, to George and Susan Emily Albright. His mother died when he was age 17 and his father remarried her sister Millie. Justin married Mildred Mahala Carlton on September 12, 1935, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids and spent 65 years together in marital harmony. She died on May 8, 2000.
He was a member of the law firm, Simmons, Perrine, Albright & Ellwood, PLC, where he was one of the founding senior partners in 1938. He attended Coe College for two years, and then received his B.S.C. at the University of Iowa in 1931 and his J.D. in 1933. He was Editor of The Iowa Law Review from 1932-1933. He was also a pole-vaulter on the Iowa Track team, competing for the Hawks at the Drake and Chicago Relays. His highest jump was 13’1” back in the days of the “bamboo pole.”
He served with the United States Army in World War II; was a founding member and past president of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Foundation; served on the Board of Directors of the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra; was Past Trustee of the Cedar Rapids YMCA; was a member of the Pickwick Club (past president), the Cedar Rapids Country Club and life member of the American Bar, Iowa Bar and Linn County Bar Associations, American Judicature Society, Hoover Presidential Library, Phi Delta Phi, Alpha Tau Omega, the Crescent Masonic Lodge # 25, Cedar Rapids Consistory, Scottish Rite, the El Kahir Shrine and the Cedar Rapids Downtown Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.
He was an ardent fan and supporter of the Iowa Hawkeye football team, a season ticket holder since 1945. He rarely missed a game. Iowa basketball and playing golf at the Cedar Rapids Country Club were among his other passions. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of East Central Iowa, 1642 42nd St. N.E. or the organization of your choice.

Marie A. Gruenewald, 88, of Northbrook Manor, formerly of Hiawatha, died Wed. Aug. 4, 2004 at St. lukes Hospital after a long illness. Services at 10:30 AM on Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church where friends may call after 9:30 AM on Monday. Entombment at Mt. Calvary cemetery . Cedar Memorial Funeral HoHome is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a stepson, Steve Tatro of Electric, TX. She is also survived by two nieces, Sylvia, of St. Louis, MO. and Annie of Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents and and a brother, Otto.
Marie was born on Aug. 13, 1915 in St Louis, MO. the daughter of Otto and Elizabeth Kampmann Haldenwanger. She married Walter Gruenewald on Aug. 31, 1940 in St, Louis, MO. He died in the mid 80s. Marie worked in housekeeping at St. Lukes Hospital for several years. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, the Cedar Rapids Stamp Club and the Izaak Walton League.

Richard 'Rich' A. Kemme

Richard A. 'Rich' Kemme, 40 of 308 Cottage St. in Shellsburg, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at St. Lukes Hospital after a sudden illness. Services at 11 AM on Wed. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Fran Griffeth will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the Chapel after 10 AM on Wed.
Survivors include his mother and step father, Janie and Bill Williamson, his brother, James and his wife, Tracey all of Waterloo, two half sisters, Sharon and Judy, his significant other, Esther Rusch of Shellsburg, a niece, Lilly and two nephews, Jamie and Daniel. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Michael.
Rich was born on June 16, 1964 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Charles and Janie Montgomery Kemme. He did bulk deliveries for the Cedar Rapids Gazette for 2 and half years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, enjoyed playing golf and was an avid bowler. Rich will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A memorial fund has been established.

Richard E. Lovelett, 70, of 441 Mayberry Dr. NW, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services at 10:30 AM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the chapel after 10 AM on Wednesday.
Survivors include his wife Lois, three sons John Neiderhiser and wife Sandy of Ames, Iowa, Ralph Neiderhiser of Clinton, Iowa, and Jim Neiderhiser and wife Nicki of Cedar Rapids, a daughter Nancy Allen and husband Jerry of Cedar Rapids, a brother Raymond, a sister in law Doris Lovelett of Cedar Rapids, and four grandchildren, Aaron and Haley Neiderhiser, Douglas and April Allen, all of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his Parents, and two brothers Ronald and Bob.
Richard was born July 19, 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska to Roger and Ella Irene Lovelett. He married Lois Meskimen Neiderhiser on June 26, 1965 in Cedar Rapids. He was a lineman and stock keeper for North Western Bell-AT&T; for 30 years retiring in 1985.
He enjoyed watching television, golfing, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He was a US Army peacetime veteran.
Richard dearly loved his family. His love and generosity will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Kennedy High School Athletic Department.

Patricia M. Marshall

Patricia Marshall, 73, of 3020 Circle N.E., Cedar Rapids died on August 7, 2004 at Higley Mansion Care Center. Pat will be greatly missed by her many friends and family members.

Services: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church by the Rev. Thomas Hulme. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call on Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and after 12:00 p.m. at the church on Wednesday.

Pat was an active democrat, labor leader, and community activist. She was born in Bagley, Minnesota in 1930. She married Leslie Marshall in 1953 and moved to Cedar Rapids where they both began to work for Collins Radio. While working at Collins, Pat became active in the labor movement, belonging to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) local 1362 for over 50 years and where she served as President of the local for 19 years before retiring. She was inducted into the AFL-CIO Hall of Fame in 1997.
Through the union Pat became involved in grass roots politics. She was elected to many local, district, state, and national political offices including: delegate to county, district, state and national conventions, Linn County Democrats Vice-Chair, and served on the democratic National Committee since 1984. Pat was involved in many political campaigns including Co-Chair of Senator Tom Harkin's 1996 campaign and Co-Chair for Linn County for Governor Tom Vilsack's 1998 campaign. Throughout the years, as various presidential candidates came to Iowa, Pat was the person they all met and consulted with in eastern Iowa. Pat will be disappointed that she wasn't around to see John Kerry become the next president of the United States.
Pat was also a dedicated community activist. She was involved with the Family Service Agency, United Way, Linn County Regional Planning Commission, Foresight 20-20, Senior Advocates, the Cedar Rapids Area Theatre Organ Society, Creative Artists, and the Collins Oral History Project for the History Center.
Two brothers, Wilmer of Cedar Rapids and Wilber of Eugene, Oregon, and many nieces and nephews survive Pat.

Her parents Benjamin and Elizabeth Cook Scholl, husband Lesley, two sisters, Frances Hayes, and Iva McKinney preceded her in death.

The family would like to give special thanks to 'Team Pat' for their unselfish efforts to keep Pat comfortable. Marcia Rogers, Beth Freeman, Lyn Clouse, Shannon Utley and Linda McKinney. The nursing staff at Higley Care Mansion as well St. Luke's Hospital, hospice, Dr. Wiesenfeld and Dr. Streib.
Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
