Mary Francis Janey, 85, went into the presence of her Lord and savior Sunday, August 8, 2004 in Faribault, Minnesota following a lengthy illness. She was formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Friends may call Wednesday, August 11 at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 12 at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Mary’s long-time and beloved pastor, the Reverend Tomm Byrtus, will deliver the memorial message.
Mary was born April 16, 1919, in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Joe and Lalar Young. She married Edgar Irving Janey on April 17, 1935 in Greensboro. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, brothers Frank and Clyde Young, sons Robert and Charles Janey, three grandchildren and one great grandson.
Survivors include: a son, Irv (Sammi) Janey of Marion, IA, and a daughter, Mary Ellen (Rick) Koss of Faribault, MN. Four sisters, Ellen (Dave) Weston of Chesapeake, VA; Pauline Wallace of Greensboro, NC; Earline Mahaffey of Greensboro, NC; and Eva Slade of Palm Beach, FL.
Mary had eighteen grandchildren: Julie (Randy) Hulseberg; Dewayne (Gloria), Victor, Brian (Lana), Robert, Jr. (Dawn), Edgar (Martha), Bradley (Natalia), David (Courtney), Shannon, Tara, Charlene, and Jared Janey. Mary Ellen (Scott) Witham; Tammi (Tony) Lafler; Tiffany (Tim) Dallenbach; Trayce (Jeremy) Goffe; Nicole (Glen Lawrence) Koss; Natalie (Leif) Crooks.
Special family members are Dennis Koss, Dan Johnson, Ruth Janey, and Pat Landt.
Mary had 41 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Mary was the proud mother of the Janey Racing Team. She was famous for her southern cooking and her kitchen was the first stop for all visitors – she always had biscuits in the oven and gravy on the stove.
Mary was a woman of great faith, a 33 year member of the Faribault, MN Assembly of God congregation. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and her sunny disposition and prayers a comfort to all who were troubled. Her children, grand children, great grand children and all of her family were the joy in her life. She was also a great lover of animals and always enjoyed her pets.
All of Mary’s family and her many friends will miss her greatly. However, we all take comfort knowing that Mary will always be in our presence through the wonderful memories of her that live in our hearts.

Phyllis J. Stolba, 80, of 1435 29th Street NE, died Monday, August 9, 2004, in her home following a sudden illness. Services at 10:30 AM Friday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. William Jamison of First Congregational Church will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday and at the chapel after 10 AM on Friday.
Survivors include three sons Kurt Stolba and wife Andrea of Norway, Kary Stolba and wife Teresa, and Jay Stolba and wife Sarah all of Cedar Rapids, four grandchildren, Matthew and wife Carolyn, Kaitlin, Rachel, and Gus, and a great grandson Evan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother Robert Merrill. Phyllis was born June 5, 1924 in Anamosa to Fay and Cleola Peters Merrill. She married Vernon A. Stolba on September 18, 1943 in Cedar Rapids. He died February 27, 1990. Phyllis attended First Congregational Church and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends.
Phyllis will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A memorial fund has been established.

Marcelle L. Smith

Services: 11:00 A.M., Thursday, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where friends may call after 10:00 A.M. Rev. Jeffrey Borgwardt of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ely will officiate,. Interment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Marcelle is survived by her daughter Charlotte (Bill) McCusker of Sun City, AZ; son Ron (Terrie) Smith of Savannah, MO: daughter Cynthia (Robert) James of Ely, IA: daughter-in-law Ronda Smith of Silvis, IL: brother Richard Sweeting of Cedar Rapids, IA: eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Marcelle was preceded in death by her husband, George (Randy) Smith of Ely, her parents, two brothers, one sister, a son Stephen Smith, and a grandson Jimmy Smith.
She was born September 3, 1923 to Orral and Louise Sweeting in Cedar Rapids, She graduated from Roosevelt High School with the Class of 1941 and married George R. Smith on October 11, 1941 in Kahoka, MO. George and Marcie lived in Ely for the last 30 years developing land and building homes. Marcelle was a homemaker, an active volunteer in many organizations, a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and a member of Town and Country Club of Ely. She loved her family and friends, and all flowers and birds.
The family suggests memorial gifts be sent to St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice Program in Cedar Rapids.

Beverly Anne Johnson, 68, of 108 36th Ave SW, a life-long Cedar Rapids resident, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, in St. Luke’s Hospital following a brief illness. Services at 10 AM Saturday in Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda Bibb officiating. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the church after 9:30 AM on Saturday.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Louis Johnson of Cedar Rapids, two sons and their spouses, Allan and Jan of Cedar Rapids, and Thomas and Kathy of Kirksville, Missouri, four grandchildren, Nikki and her husband Josh Grissom, Shelly, Andrew, and Becky Johnson, and two great-grandchildren, Dillion and Calvin Grissom. She is also survived by a brother William J. Grafton and a sister Kathryn Grafton, both of Cedar Rapids, and her best friend Diana Wells of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Beverly was born September 6, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, to William R. and Bernice M. Mann Grafton. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1953. She married Louis Johnson on December 18, 1955, in Marion. In 1982, she earned her BS degree in Business Administration and Criminal Justice from Mount Mercy College.
Bev worked as a correctional officer at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville for 5 years before retiring in 1991. She also had worked as a security guard for Two Star Detective Agency in Cedar Rapids for almost 20 years. She especially enjoyed working the University of Iowa sporting events while working for Two Star. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Bev was a loving mother and wife, collected antique glass swans, was an avid civil war buff, a softball player, a rock collector, and photographer. Bev also enjoyed traveling. She was an avid supporter of the Native American Ministry of the United Methodist Church and was studying for the lay ministry.
“But those that wait upon the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” -Isaiah 40:31.
A memorial fund has been established.

Leland L. Reynolds
February 22, 1913 - July 19, 2004

Leland L. (Lee) Reynolds, 91 of 2115 1st Ave. S.E. (Cottage Grove Place), died Monday at Heritage Care Center following a long illness. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by Rev. Kay Slocam, First Lutheran Church officiating. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and at the Chapel of Memories after noon on Thursday. Military rites will be presented by VFW Post 788.
Surviving besides his wife Lillian of 64 years, is a niece, Loraine Kohl of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Reynolds and a sister, Olivine Kohl.
He was born on February 22, 1913 in Mt. Vernon, Iowa to George and Margaret (Carney) Reynolds and was married to Lillian Schindler on October 6, 1939 in Cedar Rapids.
Mr. Reynolds has served during World War 2 in the U.S. Navy.
Lee had been with the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years prior to his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, was a life long member of the VFW Post 788 and life long member of the American Legion Hanford Post # 5. He was presented with the Linn County Patriotism Award in 1994 by the Linn County Board of Supervisors, for serving the veterans of this community and nation with integrity, honor and loyalty, for serving in the U.S. Navy from 10/6/1943 – 11/25/1945. The award also acknowledges his serving the American Legion Hanford Post #5 for 5 years and VFW Post 788 for 8 years. Lee helped organize and participated in last military rites for over a thousand funerals and personally attended 907 of them.
Friends may, if they wish, make contributions to the First Lutheran Church.

Marilyn Dekko
July 17, 1940 - July 18, 2004

Marilyn 'Shawn' Dekko, 64, 4833 Olde Mill Court NE died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services: 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where friends may call from 1 to 2 PM. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . The Rev. Randy Kasch will officiate. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Surviving in addition to her husband Gary are two sons, Kelly Dekko and wife Lori, and Steven Dekko and wife Kris all of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Whitney Dill and husband Darren of Fairfax; a sister, Audrey Felske and husband Berdean of Gary, MN; a brother, David Gilbertson of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Gladyce Gilbertson of Ada, MN; and four grandchildren, Riley Dill, McKenzie Sweet, Kasey Dekko, and Kenadee Dekko.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Marilyn was born July 17, 1940 in Gary, MN the daughter of Melvin and Gladyce (Mjelde) Veker. She married Gary Dekko on October 24, 1959. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Marilyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family meant the world to her.
