Effie Carlson
Effie Carlson, 79, Rock Island, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline. The Rev. Andy Goffinet and the Rev. Dan Walter will officiate. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline. Memorials may be made to the church.

The former Effie Molter was born March 7, 1921, in Chicago, the daughter of Jacob and Annie Swierenga Molter. She married Carl H. Carlson Sept. 13, 1945, in Chicago. For most of her life, she enjoyed being a homemaker. She later worked at Desauliners Printing Company for 10 years as a typesetter.

Effie was a member of First Evangelical Free Church of Moline, where she earlier taught Sunday School and was active in the Women's Missionary Society. She dearly loved the Lord, her husband, her children and her grandchildren. She devoted her life to them. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Carl; son, David W. Carlson, Rock Island; son and daughter-in-law, James K. and Kathy Carlson, Rock Island; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and John Blomquist, Moline; and grandchildren, Austin and Katelyn Carlson, Anna, Rebecca and Sarah Blomquist. Other survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Lena Molter, Whittier, Calif., and Jacob and Joan Molter, Bensenville, Ill.; and sisters, Lena Fricke, Goshen, Ind., Dorothy Adams, Chicago, and Edythe Molter, Lockport, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Henry, John, Peter and Cornelius Molter.

Miriam March
Memorial services for Miriam A. March, 80, of 1900 6th Ave., Rock Island, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to service time.

The body has been donated to Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill., for medical research. Inurnment will be in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island, at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family.

Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. March died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Miriam Maxwell was born June 30, 1920, in Bayard, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph L. and Bertha F. Bulger Maxwell. She married William R. March Dec. 14, 1953, in Rock Island. He died June 10, 1976.

Miriam had worked as a secretary for United Way of the Quad Cities for 11 years, retiring in 1986. She previously worked for the City of Rock Island, serving as secretary to the mayor for 13 years. In earlier years, she was a legal secretary for the law firm of Coyle and Coppersmith.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Ladies Sodality. She was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella Circle 532 and the Noreen Walker Circle of Kings Daughters. In her earlier years she had been a performer with the Playcrafters.

Survivors include daughters and a son-in-law, Molly and Kenneth Wilkison, Davenport, and Sally Simmons, Rock Island; grandchildren, Joshua Wilkison, and Kate Simmons; and an aunt, Violet Bulger, Moline. Her parents and a sister Orzie Lavell preceded her in death.

John McEvoy Sr.
Services for John R. McEvoy Sr., 82, of Rock Island, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is in the National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Visitation is 9 a.m. until time of the service Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or to the American Lung Association. Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McEvoy died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

John was born March 22, 1918, in Ottawa, Ill., the son of John and Della Bedford McEvoy. He married Ruth L. Longer June 6, 1942, in Davenport.

Mr. McEvoy was a cabinetmaker and owned and operated McEvoy Cabinet Co., Rock Island. He later worked part-time at Hyman's Furniture Store, Rock Island, and the former Carver Lumber Co., Milan.

He was a WW II Navy veteran.

John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs and doing woodworking projects, including making grandfather clocks.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Michael Freece, Boulder, Colo., Peggy and Fred Hanshaw, Rock Island, Debbie and Paul Berg, Champaign; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Geralyn McEvoy Jr., Rock Island; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosemary Frese, Davenport; and a brother, Bernard McEvoy, White Bear Lake, Minn.

Virginia Sindt
Services for Virginia M. Sindt, 87, Kahl Home, Davenport, formerly of Rock Island, are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Church, Rock Island. Entombment is in Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island.

Visitation is one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be mad to St. Pius X Church, where she was a member.

Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sindt died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.

Virginia Senger was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Rock Island, the daughter of George and Anna Peive Senger. She married H. Wilbert Sindt Sept. 25, 1940, in Rock Island. He died Nov. 12, 1982.

She was an office worker at the former John Deere Plow-Planter, Moline, until her retirement.

Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Senger, Moline; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by seven sisters, Lillian James, Annette Webb, Dorothy Voss, Lucille Cotter, Henrietta VandePutte, Elizabeth Trembley and Kathleen Schwarz.

Joseph Yuris
Services for Joseph A. Yuris, 70, Rock Island, are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island, Rev. Donald Gibson officiating. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today. Memorials may go to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Yuris died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his residence after a 17-month battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Chicago, the son of Joseph Yucis and Barbara Zabarouske Yucis. He married Carol Tebbe June 20, 1953, in Rock Island.

He was a self-employed hydraulic mechanic, last working March 1999. He was formerly employed at the former JI Case Co., Rock Island, and the former Ametek, East Moline.

He was an Army private.

In earlier years, he played softball with the Rock Island and Moline Adult Men's Leagues. Joe was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and tent camping. His favorite camping experience was a three-week photo safari in Africa. He loved to travel all over the world and especially enjoyed cruises. He was devoted to his family and friends and will be missed by them and his beloved dog, ``Hershey". He liked the river boats, playing cards and his vegetable garden.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Tom Lindquist, Sandy, Utah, Kristine Yuris and Jim Zirbes, Rock Island; sisters, Shirley White, Downers Grove, Ill.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Helen Cichy.

Douglas Thompson
Douglas A. Thompson, 49, Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, after a long battle with diabetes.

Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Estel Perrin & Avey, Marshalltown, is handling arrangements.

He was born May 25, 1951, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Lewis and Eloise Hien Thompson. He married Mabel Reeves in 1983 in Rock Island. He was a truck driver until 1986 and had been in the Air Force. He also coached one year for the Moline Park Board Basketball League. He enjoyed riverboats and collecting cards.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel; a daughter, Jill Thompson, a son, Cory Thompson, both of Moline; and sisters, Connie and Patricia. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard Thompson.

Thelma Bailey
Thelma V. Kottman Stancliff Bailey, 87, Galesburg, formerly of Aledo, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Family Funeral Services, Aledo. Burial is in Aledo cemetery . Visitation is 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Greentown Wesleyan, Greentown, Ind., or First Church of God, Galesburg.

She was born April 23, 1913, in Elroy, Ill., the daughter of Levi and Nellie Turner Mishler. She married Marvin Kottman on March 15, 1933, in Elroy, Ill. He preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1960. She married Glen Stancliff in July of 1961 in Aledo. He preceded her in death in 1980. She married Ralph Bailey in February 1987 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death in 1992.

She graduated valedictorian of Lena (Ill.) High School. She attended Northern Illinois State University in DeKalb, graduating from Augustana College in 1962.

She taught for many years in the Stark County and Mercer County schools.

She was a member of National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution; Retired Teachers Association; and Oneida Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed gardening, crafts and sewing.

Survivors include daughters, Norma J. Schroll, Kokoma, Ind., and Marlene A. Guthrie, Galesburg; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a daughter, Joyce Kottman; and a sister, Lucille Mishler.

Fannie Hottel
Fannie E. Hottel, 97, of 755 320th St., New Windsor, formerly of Monmouth, died Aug. 13, 2000, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

Services are 10 a.m. today at Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth. Burial is in Woodlawn cemetery , Augusta, Ill. Memorials to First Christian Church, Monmouth, American Heart Association or Mercer County Home Health Care.

Fannie was born April 23, 1903, in Rutledge, Mo. She married Lyle Hottel in 1920. He died in 1986. She and her husband owned and operated Hottel's Beauty Shop in Monmouth for 65 years.

Surviving are her daughter, Delores Hennenfent, New Windsor; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; niece, Martha Hamilton, Moline; and brothers-in-law, James Hottel, Hills, Iowa, Wallace Hottel, Marceline, Mo.

James Franks
James ``Jim" L. Franks, 59, of Rock Island, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at his home.

Private graveside services will be held Friday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. There is no visitation. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 1, 1941, in Brilliant, Ala., the son of Dolphus and Josie Pridmore Franks.

James is survived by his parents, Rock Island; and uncle and aunt, Everett and Shirley Franks, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Robert McMillan
Robert L. McMillan, 83, of Rock Island passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at River Park Healthcare Center, Rock Island.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Illowa Boy Scout Council.

Robert was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Moline, the son of George and Olivia (Tanhey) McMillan. He married Mary Barbara Geeting May 2, 1947, in Japan.

He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, stationed in the Philippines. Following the war, he supervised the building of housing developments in Tokyo.

Robert was a employed at Union Local 166 in Rock Island for more than 40 years, retiring in 1983.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Michael McMillan, Kingwood, Texas; Mark McMillan, Sherrard; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Alida Poma
Alida S. Poma, 100, formerly of Rock Island, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Marion County Nursing Home, Bull Shoals, Ark.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a rosary recited at 4:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Poma was born Jan. 20, 1901, in Pittem, Belgium, the daughter of Julius and Sidonie (VanHee) Velghe. She married Joseph C. Poma May 15, 1921, in Pitthem. They moved to the United States shortly after their marriage and settled in Rock Island. He died Sept. 26, 1981.

In her earlier years, Mrs. Poma worked at the former Servus Rubber Co. She was a past member of St. Joseph Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. Before that, she was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Milan. She was a charter member of the Belgian Bobbin Lacemakers in Moline.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Albert A. and Minnie Poma, Bull Shoals, Ark.; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; three great-great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight sisters and one granddaughter.

Moline

Kendall Anderson
Kendall P. Anderson, 62, Grinnell, Iowa, formerly of Moline, died Feb. 25, 2001, at Mayflower Health Care Center, Grinnell.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell. Burial is 1 p.m. Saturday at Greenview Memorial Gardens, Silvis. The body was cremated. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Surviving are his sons, Dr. Daniel Anderson, Grinnell, Jon Anderson, Newport, R.I., and Jamie Anderson, Iowa City; daughter, Jennifer Anderson, Calistoga, Calif.; brothers, Vernon Anderson, Apple Valley, Calif., Larry Anderson, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Keith Anderson, North Hollywood, Calif.; sisters, Darlene Patterson, Moline, Frances Tucker, Oxon Hill, Md., and Marilyn Ella, Lompoc, Calif; and seven grandchildren.

Louie Hinsberger
Services for Louie P. Hinsberger, 89, Moline, are 9:30 a.m. Friday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, where he was a member. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church or Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Mr. Hinsberger died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Oak Glen Home.

Louie was born April 1, 1912, in Barstow, the son of Peter and Anna Tevoet Hinsberger. He married Mary Colpert Somers Oct. 17, 1953, in Moline.

Mr. Hinsberger retired in 1970 as a foreman at Blackhawk Foundry, Davenport. Prior to that, he was employed at the former Moline Iron Works, working as a foreman.

He had been a member of the Rock Island County Farm Bureau since 1939. He enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; stepdaughter and her husband, Margaret and Eugene Connors, Venice, Fla.; four stepgrandchildren; nieces and husbands, Mary Ann Kite, Donna and Clifford Howell, Betty and Richard Thomas, Kathryn and Robert Heyvaert, Lillian and LaVerne Israelson, Loretta and Gerald Streitmatter and Norma and Thomas Spears; and nephews and wives, Roy and Jackie McGuire, Jerald and Janis McGuire, Michael McGuire, Louis and Alice Redmond and Richard Redmond.
