Karl Madsen
Services for Karl D. Madsen, 62, of Moline, will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, where he was a member. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, with military honors by Moline American Legion Post 246.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a Christian wake service at 6 p.m. Memorials to Quad City Right to Life, Gilda's Club or Sacred Heart Church.

Mr. Madsen died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Iowa City.

He was born Nov. 24, 1938, in Kankakee, Ill., the son of Howard and Mae Dion Madsen. He married Joyce E. Roberts Nov. 13, 1965, in Carbondale, Ill.

Mr. Madsen worked for 35 years in human resource management with various employers in the Quad-Cities area. He retired in 1996 from Madsen Associates, a human resource consulting firm that he owned.

He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and a Vietnam Army veteran.

He was a member of Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society. He enjoyed camping and playing and listening to jazz music. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; daughters and sons-in-law, Kristen and Steve Logan, Davenport, and Kathryn and Mike Murphy, Moline; sons and daughter-in-law, Del and Tammy Madsen, Madison, Wis., and Dan Madsen, Moline; and four grandchildren.

Ruth McCullough
Services for Ruth E. McCullough, 96, of Moline, are 1 p.m. Thursday at Gaines Chapel, A.M.E. Church, East Moline. Burial is in Riverside cemetery , Moline.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline.

Ruth passed on Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

She was born Aug. 8, 1904, in Mansfield, Tenn., the daughter of Richard and Louisa Tharpe. She married Lester B. McCullough Dec. 27, 1921, in Mansfield. To this union were born three sons, Hughlon, Vern and Lawrence, and a daughter, Marion.

She was employed at the former LeClaire Hotel, Moline, and as a housekeeper for various families.

She was a life member of Gaines Chapel, A.M.E. Church, where she was a member of the Stewardress Board, the Missionary Society, World War Mothers Club and the Moline Ladies Social Club.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence Sr.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Virginia McCullough, Rock Island, Sara McCullough, Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, Hughlon and Vern; daughter, Marion; brothers, Alonzo, Homer and George; and a sister, Orangie.

Nellie Meek
Nellie H. Meek, 99, of Moline, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline.

Ryland Phillips

Ryland D. Phillips, 76, of 3505 South Shore Drive, Moline, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at his home.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 246, Moline. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ryland D. Phillips was born May 5, 1924, in Watertown, S.D., to George and Esther Brakhage Phillips. He married Juliette Schumacker Aug. 26, 1948, in Rapid City, S.D. She preceded him in death in 1972.

Ryland attended the University of Nebraska, New York University and the University of South Dakota. He served in the Army Air Forces during WWII as a pilot and then joined the Air Force Reserves. He retired from the military after 41 years as a lieutenant colonel.

He was employed in sales at Deere and Co., Moline, for 34 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of Moline Lodge 1014 AF & AM; Scottish Rite Valley of Moline; Kaaba Shrine, Davenport; Elks Lodge 528, Esterville, Iowa; Thor Lodge 9 Vikings, Moline; a 50-year member of Moline American Legion Post 246 and a 50-year member of the VFW and East End Club.

He is survived by a daughter, Peggy Chapman, Spencer, Iowa; sons, David Phillips, Spencer, Michael Phillips, Dolores, Colo., and Richard Phillips, Titonka, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and sons, Ryland Phillips Jr. and Thomas Phillips.

Margaret Tagge
Margaret E. Tagge, 87, of 810 E. Chamberlin St., Dixon, Ill., died Monday, April 16, 2001, at KSB Hospital, Dixon.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ with the Rev. Lynn Bond, pastor, officiating. Burial is in Oakwood cemetery , Dixon. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, Dixon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Volunteer Care Center of Lee County or the Lee County Senior Center, both in Dixon.

She was born Nov. 13, 1913, in Moline, the daughter of John and Caroline Clark. She attended Moline Public Schools, graduating from Moline High School and earning an associate degree from Rockford College in 1962.

She married John Schlueter in 1932 in Moline. He preceded her in death in 1936. In 1939, she married John Tagge. He died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Schlueter Stemple, son, John ``Jack" Schlueter, and sisters, Mary and Dorothy.

She started as a clerk typist in 1951 at the Dixon Developmental Center in Dixon and retired in 1978 after serving many years as the director of personnel. In 1965, she was State of Illinois Employee of the Year for her agency.

Prior to and after her retirement, Margaret was an active volunteer in the Dixon area. At the time of her death she was a board member of the Tri-County Opportunity Council, the Senior Citizen Center of Lee County and the Volunteer Care Center of Lee County. Margaret had held various offices in all three organizations over the years and was especially active in the creation and promotion of the Volunteer Care Center, a free medical clinic.

She was affiliated with the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.

Survivors include sons (and spouses), Dr. David (Lynn) Tagge, Escondido, Calif., and Stephen (Neta) Tagge, Springfield; eight grandsons; a granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Clark, Kerrvile, Texas.

East Moline

James Honn
Graveside services for James M. Honn, 51, of Santa Fe, N.M., formerly of Salt Lake City, Utah, and East Moline, are 2 p.m. Friday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island, where military honors will be conducted by the Milan American Legion 569, Rock Island Post 200, and Rock Island VFW Post 1303.

Mr. Honn died March 9, 2001, in Santa Fe.

Mr. Honn was born July 4, 1949, in Rock Island, the son of William and Rosemary (Shea) Honn.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed sketching and the outdoors.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, William and Dana Honn, Glendora, Calif.; sisters and brother-in-law, Deborah and Ted Cord, East Moline, Geri Means, Wichita, Kan., Kelly Honn, East Moline; brothers and sister-in-law, Homer Honn, Moline, Kevin and Coni Honn, Derby, Kan., Cory Honn, Albuquerque, N.M.; six nieces; five nephews; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Jason Honn, who died in 1995, and his mother, Rosemary, who died in 1998.

Lois Phillips
Graveside services for Lois Mae Phillips, 58, of East Moline, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Swan Lake cemetery , Peoria.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Woosley-Wilton Funeral Home, Peoria. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Arthritis Foundation.

Mrs. Phillips died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Colorado Springs, Colo., while on vacation.

Lois was born June 29, 1942, in Peoria, the daughter of Louis and Esther Hauk Hoffman. She married Gary Phillips July 30, 1966, in Peoria. She was a graduate of Dunlap High School and Peoria School of Cosmetology.

She worked as a beautician, as a secretary at the Moline Arlans and did sewing work for the Country Loft in SouthPark Mall.

She enjoyed traveling, camping, sewing, bowling, watching all sports and cooking.

Survivors include her mother, of Peoria; her husband; sons, David, East Moline, Steven and wife, Virginia, Ottawa, Ill., brothers, Glen, Brimfield, Ill., and Warren and wife, Sandra, Dunlap, Ill.; sisters, Gladys Nibbelin and husband, Ralph, Chillicothe, Ill., and Laura Stokes and husband, Russell, Peoria; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.

Silvis

Harold Huff
Funeral services for Harold E. Huff, 70, Cliff Heights, Silvis, are 10 a.m. Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline.

Burial is in St. Mary's cemetery , where East Moline American Legion Post 227 and VFW 2056 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be recited by the Moline Scottish Rite at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Huff died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

He was born June 11, 1930, in Pekin, Ill., the son of Harold and Sarah (Havens) Huff. He married Florence Manion Dec. 3, 1971, in Rock Island. She died June 22, 1980.

He owned and operated A-1 Transmission, East Moline, for 30 years and later owned Huff's Automotive, Carbon Cliff, for 15 years. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran. He was a member of the Kaaba Shrine, Masons, the Scottish Rite, the Geneseo Moose and the Eagles.

Survivors include his sons, Harold, Frank and Randy; stepsons, William and Thomas Teager; several grandchildren; sister, Bonnie Olson, East Moline; and special friend, Anita Bruce. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Daniels, and stepson, Michael Teager.

Betty DeVore
Betty DeVore, 77, Florida, formerly of Galesburg, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Florida.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston Funeral Home, Hinsdale, Ill. Burial is private. Visitation is 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to favorite charity.

Mrs. DeVore was born March 1, 1924, in Galesburg, the daughter of Zelda Miller.

Survivors (and spouses) include her husband, Raymond; daughter, Bonnie (John) Calfa, Hinsdale; sons, Terry (Mary) Jacks, Moline, Duane (Carol) Jacks, Ray (Joy) DeVore; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Curtis Johnson
Services for Curtis H. Johnson, 79, of 736 46th Ave., Keithsburg, are 1 p.m. Friday at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to Ducks Unlimited.

Mr. Johnson died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

He was born April 10, 1922, in Lynn Center, the son of Charles ``Carl" and Myra Bland Johnson. He married Hazel Evelyn Wilkinson Rowley June 7, 1973.

Mr. Johnson was a WWII Army veteran. He served in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea and the Phillipines and was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was an over-the-road truck driver, retiring from Miller Container in 1985 after 10 years of service. Prior to that, he was an independent driver for most of his life. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting pool and playing cards.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Johnson; son, Robert Johnson, Keithsburg; grandchildren, Kimberly, Kadie, Margaret and Frances Ryan; stepsons and spouses, Tom and Joann Rowley, Hyde Park, N.Y., and Joe and Ute Rowley, Chicago; seven stepgrandchildren, Michael and Lindsey Pottlman, Kimberly, Joe, Chris, Matthew and Elizabeth Rowley; and an aunt, Mary Stodt, Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Edwin Tripamer
Edwin J. Tripamer, 80, of rural Geneseo, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo, where he was a member. Burial will be in North cemetery , Geneseo.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Myers Chapel, Stackhouse-Moore, Geneseo, with a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Edwin Tripamer was born April 14, 1921, in Chicago to Charles and Giesella Tripamer. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter, Marilyn Derango, Geneseo; son, Douglas Tripamer, Osceola, Wis.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irma Tripamer, Bartlett, Ill. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Velma Dipple
Services for Velma M. Dipple, 90, Davenport, are 11 a.m. Friday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial is in Blue Grass cemetery . Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Dipple died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Davenport.

Surviving are her daughters, Beverly Oake, Shirley Stuckel and Peggy Dykes, all of Davenport; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Lee Wainscott, Muscatine, and Boyd Wainscott, Davenport; sisters, Helen Meyer, Muscatine, and Berneal Wulf and Betty Spalding, both of Davenport.

Donald Downs
Donald D. Downs, 57, Davenport, died April 16, 2001, at home.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a future time. Memorials to the family. Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is handling arrangements.

He was born Nov. 17, 1943, in Iowa City. He married Linda Lorber Nov. 10, 1990.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Scott Downs, Tim Downs and Lance Lorber of Davenport; daughters, Tricia Ann Lorber and Toni Renea Wagner, both of Des Moines, Iowa; two grandsons; sister, Bev Becker, Manchester, Iowa; and brother, John Downs, Dundee, Iowa.

Mary Robbins
Mary E. Robbins, 80, of Davenport, died Monday, April 17, 2001, at Manor Care Nursing Center, Davenport.

Services are 6 p.m. Thursday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport, with visitation 4 p.m. to service time.

Further arrangements are pending.
