Fonda Egel
Services for Fonda Egel, 91, formerly of Muscatine County, Iowa, are 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today.

Mrs. Egel died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Cortland (N.Y.) Care Center.

Fonda was born Aug. 28, 1909, in Muscatine to Jacob and Rosa Drum. She married Walter Egel. He died Oct. 23, 1989.

Survivors (and spouses) include a daughter, Nancy (Richard) Kroot, Cortland; grandchildren, Michelle (Frank) Wilson of Cortland and Eric Kroot of Lynnwood, Wash.; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Johanna.

John `Jack' Kaiser
John L. ``Jack" Kaiser, 64, of Kewanee, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Kewanee Hospital.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Church of Peace, in rural Kewanee. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee, where further

Henry Koch
Henry R. Koch, 85, of Bettendorf, formerly of rural Scott County, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Eldridge, Iowa, where further arrangements are pending.

Helen Martin
Helen F. Martin, 71, Bettendorf, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Genesis West, Davenport.

Services will be 5 p.m. Sunday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass, Bettendorf, with visitation from 2 p.m. to service time. Interment will be private. Memorials go to the family.

Helen was born July 8, 1929, in Davenport to John and Bessie Johnson Dailey. She married James E. Martin June 21, 1949, in Lancaster, Mo.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Mary Maack, Bettendorf, and Bonnie Russell, Wasola, Mo.; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Eugene `Gene' Shurtz
Eugene ``Gene" Shurtz, 82, Davenport. died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Crest Health Care, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Robert `Pops' Downing
Robert H. ``Pops" Downing, 80, Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Baptist Medical Center Hospital, Jacksonville.

A memorial service will be held in the Rock Island area at a future date.

Mr. Downing was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Rock Island to Harry and Mary Downing. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1939. He married Margaret Durey in 1952 in Berwyn, Ill. She died April 20, 1995.

A veteran of the Army Air Forces, he served in the Pacific during World War II as a B-29 bomber remote control turret mechanic until 1946.

He was very active and well-known in the Quad-Cities area. He and his wife owned the Showboat Inn in downtown Rock Island until 1960. He and his brothers managed Downing's Dairy, a business established by his father and later purchased by Swiss Valley Farms, until the late 1970s, when the business was destroyed by fire.

He had been a member of the Moose Lodge and Elks Club for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Recently, along with enjoying retirement, he assisted his son and daughter-in-law with their restaurant, The Beach Hut Cafe, in Jacksonville Beach.

Survivors, including spouses, are daughters, Linda and Richard Westerfield, and Vickie and Stephen Eilers, all of Rock Island; sons, Richard and Desiree Downing, Jacksonville, Timothy and Sheri Downing, Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota; brothers, David and Donna Downing, Jerry and Jean Downing and Kenneth and Jean Downing, all of Rock Island, Bill and Rita Downing, Saint James City, Fla; grandchildren, Nicholas, Jason, Jesse, Stephine, Heather, Michael, Kelsey and Kaitlyn; and great-grandson, Dakoatah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife; daughter, Pamela; and infant son, Brian.

Fondly known as ``Pops" and ``Honest Bob, " his loving sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

James Finks
James H. Finks, 78, Rock Island, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Pekin (Ill.) Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.

Mr. Finks was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Plano, Iowa, the son of Claude and Ollie Curtis Finks. He married Loah L. Holder May 24, 1946, in Mystic, Iowa.

He was employed at Deere & Co. for 30 years, retiring May 1, 1977. He was a seaman 1st class in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a former member of Church of Peace, Rock Island. He was a 32nd-degree Mason with Trio Lodge 57, Rock Island, and a member of Scottish Rite Cathedral, Moline, and Milan American Legion/VFW Post 1303. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Loah; daughters, Paula (Vincent) Sapinski, Edwards, Ill., and Madelyn Nelson, DeKalb, Ill.; sisters, Mary Slavins and Peggy Howe, both of Centerville, Iowa, Delores (Gwen) Hemphill, Corydon, Iowa, and Aldine Traylor, LaGrange, Ga.; grandchildren, Dawn (John) Kocher, Peoria, Dana Goodmiller, Bettendorf, Heather Hill, Lilburn, Ga., and Erica and Aaron Sapinski, Edwards; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

Robert Petersmith
Robert C. Petersmith, 85, Rock Island, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at home.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. The Rev. Lawrence Morlan will officiate. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

He was born April 7, 1916, in Sedalia, Mo., the son of George Rome and Lena Koch Petersmith. He married Virginia Moran Aug. 3, 1940, in Watseka, Ill. She died June 13, 1995.

He was employed at Desaulnier's Printing for many years. He worked at the former East Moline State Hospital until his retirement in 1979.

He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island. He enjoyed traveling, gardening and all sports and was an avid Cubs fan.

Survivors (and spouses) include daughters, Diana (Dick) Gunlock, El Paso, Ark., and Marylynn (Glenn) Golliher, Milwaukee, Wis.; a son, Bob (Cindy) Petersmith, Moline; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Arthur; and grandsons, Jay and Jim Golliher.

Virginia Larsen
Virginia M. Larsen, formerly of Moline, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in Portland, Ore. Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Florida Chapter, 300 S. Duncan Ave., Suite 235, Clearwater, Fla. 33755.

Virginia Marion Fryxell was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Moline, the daughter of Victor and Olga Fryxell.

She is survived by her husband, Allen F. Larsen, and daughter, Karen L. Morris, both of Portland; and three grandchildren.

Her parents, and brothers, Burton, Arthur and Donald Fryxell, preceded her in death.

Opal Davis
Opal E. Davis, 83, formerly of East Moline, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.

Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Janet Day
Janet Louise Day, 71, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., formerly of Milan, died Sept. 14, 2000.

Friends and relatives are invited to the inurnment memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials to Lake Havasu Art Guild, which she served as president.

Janet was born Feb. 5, 1929, in Rock Island, the daughter of Harold and Evelyn Cook. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1946. On June 29, 1947, she was married to C. Howard Day, living in Milan until moving to Arizona in 1986.

Mrs. Day was a talented artist.

Locally, she had been active with the Left Bank Art League and Beaux Arts.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Diane Berg, Kingman, Ariz.; son, Daniel Day, Tucson; and a brother, Robert Cook, Moline.

Janet was a gentle and kind person and a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She was a good Christian lady.

Elizabeth Lane
Elizabeth Lane, 90, of Milan, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. It was the wish of Elizabeth that her body be donated to the University of Iowa for scientific study.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to United Methodist Church in Preemption.

Elizabeth was born Sept. 16, 1910, in Preemption, the daughter of Homer and Anna Lipton Rathbun. She married Floyd L. Lane Oct. 7, 1933, in Preemption.

Elizabeth and her husband started Skate Ranch in Milan in July 1960 and ran it until 1986, when she retired. It is still run by her family.

In earlier years, they farmed in Preemption until 1960. In 1930 she was voted Mercer County Queen.

She was a lifetime member of the church, member of Mercer County Farm Bureau and a longtime member of Royal Neighbors of America.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Carm Senatra, Moline; sons and daughter-in-law, Howard Lane, Milan, and David and Terry Lane, Sherrard; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. George Rathbun, Princeton, Ill.

Jennie Burke
Prayer services for Jennie Eloise Burke, 86, Morrison Skilled Care Nursing Facility, Morrison, formerly of Tampico, are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Garland Funeral Home, Tampico, followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Tampico. Burial is in St. Mary's cemetery . Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a scripture service at 7:45 p.m.

She died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the nursing facility.

She was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Hume Township, Ill., the daughter of Ford Burdette and Mabel Johnson Potter. She married Edward ``Ted" Burke Feb. 7, 1935, in Tampico. He died Aug. 28, 1970.

Surviving are daughters, Rita Deets, Peoria; Maryalis Burgess, Decatur, Ill.; son, Clare Burke, Peoria; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Violet Jaspers
Violet F. Jaspers, 81, Carbon Cliff, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Arrangements are pending at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

Iva Kernes
Iva P. Kernes, 98, Woodhull, a resident of Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the nursing home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home, Woodhull. The Rev. Burt McGlawn will officiate. Burial is in Woodhull cemetery .

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m. Memorials to the United Church of Woodhull.

The former Iva P. Patterson was born Aug. 20, 1902, in rural Alexis, the daughter of Samuel L. and Augusta Schmitt Patterson. She married Muriel Kernes Oct. 10, 1922, in Rock Island. He died Sept. 9, 1982.

She was a member of United Church of Woodhull and the United Church Women. She was a 75-year member of the Order of Eastern Star at the former Woodhull and former Rio chapters. She was a current member of Galesburg Order of Eastern Star 235. She had been a Grand Lecturer Emeritus of the Order of Eastern Star. She also was A member of the former Mothers of WWII and the AlWood Senior Citizens, Woodhull.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Gavin and Hazel Kernes, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; son-in-law, Joseph Tunnell, Climax Springs, Mo.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Tunnell in 1999; a grandchild; four brothers and six sisters.

Frances Lampe
Frances D. ``Fran" Lampe, 65, Colona, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport, with her family by her side after a long and courageous battle with cancer since 1985.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, rural East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Memorials may be made to her church. Arrangements by Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

Fran loved and cherished all children, her own and the many she babysat for over the years.

She was born June 10, 1935, the daughter of Harry and Dorothy Blackman Krambeck in Zuma Township near Port Byron. She married Harvey A. Lampe Nov. 30, 1957, in East Moline.

She was an active member at Zion Lutheran Church and sat as a board member for mission bells.

Survivors (and spouses) include her husband, Harvey; daughters, Melinda (Merle) Loete, Colona, Joyce (Dave) VanSeveren, Silvis, and Renee Lampe (Rick), East Moline; a son, Marty (Monique) Lampe, Rock Island; grandchildren, Michael VanSeveren and fiancee Stephanie Hoskins and expected great-grandchild, Angela VanSeveren; stepgrandchildren, Erik and Elerika Kratzer and Briahna Massey; stepgreat-grandchild, Keirstyn Ann Torrell; sisters, Mary Jane Johnson, East Moline, Barb (Bruce) Greer, Colona, Doris (Bob) Theim, Geneseo, Helen Dow, Arlington, Va., and Sandy Rowe, Silvis; brothers, Harold (Vi) Krambeck, Hudson, N.Y., and Herb (Clara) Krambeck, Silvis; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Henry Krambeck; nieces, Tammy Gehn and Linda Lou Johnson; and nephews, Lou Johnson and Kurt Allen Rowe.
