LaDonna Breidfjord Backmeyer was born in Minot, N.D., in 1942, the eldest of four children born to William and Amy Severson Breidfjord. The family resided in Upham, N.D., until their move to Thief River Falls, Minn., where LaDonna attended grade school and high school.

LaDonna later moved to Long Beach, Calif., the Mesabi Iron Range in Minnesota, Mound, Minn., Cordova and Rock Island. She graduated from Black Hawk College. She then attended Augustana College and received her B.A. degree from Western Illinois University.

Her first marriage was to William Louis Botta in 1959. In 1976 she married Stephen David Backmeyer.

Much of the work LaDonna did outside of home was volunteer work. She volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America. In the 1980s, she was a board member of the American Scandinavian Association at Augustana College and a board member of the Augustana Historical Society. LaDonna's main fields of study were English, and Icelandic literature as well as genealogy. She taught genealogy and Icelandic travel and culture at Black Hawk College. Her published writings include contributions to The McHenry County (N.D.) Centennial, the Icelandic Canadian; Harute-Out Here: Swedish-American Artists in Midwest America, and Quad Cities/Joined by a River.

She was a reading aide at Eugene Field School, Rock Island, for three or four years. She had an antique business in the 1970s and rented a room in Mississippi Manor, an antique mall, in the 1990s. Her efforts at teaching, antique proprietorship, and graduate school (the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University) were stopped by illness.

After being diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, a very rare cancer that had been an unknown presence in her life for many years before being diagnosed, she actively researched the available sources for treatment information. Her search led her to an online support group called Cancer-List. LaDonna's many helpful and caring contributions to this list led to her being asked to serve as co-owner of L-M Sarcoma, an Internet discussion list newly creatd by Gilles Frydman, the founder of the Association for Online Cancer Resources, (ACOR). This assignment led to co-ownership of three other Internet discussion groups. Today, the lists LaDonna helped to create and nurture serve about 1, 300 people from throughout the world who come for free information and support.

In addition to the above, she became an activist for health-care reform and a supporter of the Democratic Party's version of the Patients' Bill of Rights. In 1998, she attended The March: A Grassroots Coming Together To Conquer Cancer in Washington, D.C. After coming home from the march, she wrote to U.S. Rep. Lane Evans and made a commercial for him that centered on the Patients' Bill of Rights. Later that year, she met and introduced Vice President Al Gore at a union hall in Moline. In 1999 she was an invited participant at the Summit Conference on Clinical Trials III in Washington, D.C.

She leaves to mourn, her beloved husband, Stephen; her sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Salvador Botta and Dawn Lyn Hufford Botta, Concord, N.C., Kristjan Bradford Backmeyer, Rock Island, a student at Augustana College; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle Christin Botta Ryder and Charles Patrick Ryder, Taylor Mill, Ky.; three grandchildren, Emily Rose Ryder, Charles William Ryder and Kyle Zachary Ryder; one stepgrandchild, Charles Randall Hendricks; sister, Julie Von Breidfjord Peurasaari; a brother, Daniel Jon Breidfjord; many friends and relatives. LaDonna was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Paul Einar Breidfjord.

In recognition of her pioneering work utilizing the Internet to share vital medical information about Leiomyosarcoma, and to provide treatment options and support to victims and their caregivers, a foundation supporting L-M-sarcoma research was recently named in her honor. Memorials may be made to the LaDonna Backmeyer/Orland Heatherington L-M-sarcoma Research Foundation at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brookline, MA 02446. Memorials also may be sent to ACOR, The Association of Cancer Online Resources Inc. 173 Duane St., 3rd Floor, New York, N.Y. 10013-3334, The Icelandic Canadian, P.O. Box 21073, Charleswood Postal Outlet, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3R3R2, or St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island.
