Hazel Katherine Sandmark, 96, Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Moline, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Mount St. Francis Nursing Home, Colorado Springs.

Arrangements are pending at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline.

Dr. Richard Snodgrass
Dr. Richard Pryce Snodgrass, M.D., prominent area physician, died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at his home in Moline. He was 62.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church, Moline. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., 1216 5th Ave., Moline.

A memorial service will be held in the Jardine Center at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, at 10 a.m. Friday for colleagues and hospital staff.

Memorials may be made to two scholarships in Dr. Snodgrass' name: Trinity Foundation Scholarship Fund for Continuing Cardiac Education for Staff and Scholarship for the Emergency Medical Technician Program.

Dr. Snodgrass was born Aug. 23, 1938, in Davenport, the son of Blanche Pryce and Clinton Snodgrass. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1956, where he was a member of 4-H and Future Farmers of America.

In 1956, he enrolled at the University of Illinois, Urbana, where he was a brother of the Farm House Fraternity. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, from which he retired as an infantry captain in 1966. While in the Reserves, he earned his Master of Science in Agriculture Economics from the University of Illinois, Urbana.

From 1963 to 1967, he managed the family farm in Geneseo.

Dr. Snodgrass earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1971. He completed his internship at the University of Iowa in 1971-72. He performed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa from 1972 to 1974, while moonlighting in emergency medicine. He participated in a Fellowship of Cardiovascular Diseases at the University of Iowa from 1974 to 1976, becoming an expert in all of the invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures in cardiology. He moved to Moline in 1976.

Dr. Snodgrass had been licensed to practice medicine in the states of Iowa and Illinois since 1976. He was a board-certified internist and cardiologist, specializing in cardiovascular disease. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 1978. From 1983 to 1984, he was president of Moline Public Hospital medical staff. In 1989, he was president of the Rock Island County Medical Society, overseeing the organization's program to meet the health-care needs of low-income families.

He was committed to representing the interests of patients and physicians at the state level as well. He was first elected to the Illinois State Medical Society Board of Trustees in 1991 and this year served as secretary/treasurer. From 1989 to present, he was an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support provider. From 1991 to 1997 he was on the board of trustees for the Illinois State Medical Society. From 1992 to present he served on the board of trustees for the PBT (Physician Benefit Trust Health Insurance Co.). From 1998 to 1999 he was second vice president of the Illinois State Medical Society. He was on the board of governors for the Illinois State Medical Inter-Insurance Exchange from 1995 to present. He was also a member of the American Medical Association. In 1999, he was elected first vice president and, in this position, he was a key player in the passage of one of the nation's first patient-protection acts, known as the Illinois Managed Care Patients' Bill of Rights.

Dr. Snodgrass was also responsible for the Illinois Quad-Cities' first EMT program, started at Moline Public Hospital, where he worked side by side with his students in their education.

Dr. Snodgrass practiced at Trinity Medical Center, Genesis Medical Center, Illini Hospital and Hammond-Henry Hospital.

Dr. Snodgrass will be remembered by colleagues for his hard work, his strong professional ethics and his dedication to the medical profession. These personal qualities were reflected in his commitment to improving local health services, his long tenure on the board of the Illinois State Medical Society and his tireless dedication to patients in both Illinois and Iowa. As Dr. Snodgrass once reflected, ``It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to play a role in helping someone who needs my help." In 1996, the Rock Island County Medical Society Alliance honored Dr. Snodgrass as a Quad-Cities area Doctor of Distinction, in recognition of his commitment to the profession and to the welfare of his patients.

Dr. Snodgrass married Mary D. Driscoll in 1990. He enjoyed numerous hobbies throughout his life. Perhaps most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family, whom he loved very much.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, Moline; sons, Dr. Michael Snodgrass, Indianapolis, Ind., and Mark Snodgrass, Moline; daughters, Kim (Tom) Jensen, Ankeny, Iowa, and Kandis Snodgrass, Los Angeles, Calif.; sister, Diane Conklin, Rockford, Ill.; stepdaughters, Jennifer (Eric) Ekstam, Moline, and Jeannette (Jon) Smith, Moline; granddaughters, Ashley Jensen, Ankeny, and Stefanie Jensen, Ankeny; nephews, Bill Conklin, Rockford, and Tim Conklin, Rockford; and numerous extended family, friends and colleagues.

Drucilla Sweet
Services for Drucilla L. Sweet, 91, of East Moline, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd. East Moline, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, East Moline, where she had been a member since 1941.

Mrs. Sweet passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at her home.

Drucilla Lundeen was born June 3, 1909, in Moline, the daughter of David and Minnie (Lebbert) Lundeen. She married William A. Sweet May 18, 1929, in East Moline. He passed away Feb. 10, 1981.

She had worked as a cook for the East Moline school system for more than 18 years.

She enjoyed her church and traveling, but most of all she loved her family.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Tony Duncan, Corbin, Ky., Donna and Walter Scoville, Fair Oak, Calif., Judith Chavis, East Moline; sons, Robert Sweet, Sierra Vista, Ariz., David Sweet, Longmont, Colo., Larry Sweet, East Moline; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Erdman, East Moline; and brothers, Bazil Lundeen, East Moline, Arthur Lundeen, Wisconsin, and Les Lundeen, Long Beach, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister and three brothers.

Virgil Six
Virgil L. Six, 88, of Silvis, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Aspenwood Health Care Center, Silvis.

Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, Silvis. Visitation is noon to service time Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Aspenwood.

He was born March 23, 1912, in Bluff, Iowa, the son of John and Herbal Edna Six. He married Hallie June 4, 1967, in Port Byron. She died March 29, 1997.

He was a machinist at Farmall in Rock Island for more than 25 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of UAW Local 1309 and enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and William Gilbert, Port Byron; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Linda Six, Cambridge, and Ronnie and Patricia Six, California; three stepchildren; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Vera Rogers, Jacksonville, Ill. He was preceded in death by three daughters.

Thelma Barnes
Thelma Barnes, 85, Milan, formerly of Farmington, Mo., died Feb. 18, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Cozean Funeral Home, Farmington. Burial is in Hillview Memorial Gardens, Farmington. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

She married the late Willard Barnes in 1936 in Farmington. She retired from Rock Island County Health Care Center in 1987.

Survivors include sons, Albert, Milan, Edward, Davenport, and James, Rock Island; daughters, Elsie Grubbs, St. Louis, Mary Barnes, Eloy, Ariz., Darlene Canarr, Channelview, Texas, Brenda Pendergraft, Henderson, Nev., and Debra Brown, Milan; brother, Wilbern Chamberlain, and sister, Stella Slater, both of Knob Lick, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Clarence Baker
Clarence K. Baker, 81, of 519 Christopher St., Morrison, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Morrison Community Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison.

Elsie Bieri
Services for Elsie A. Bieri, 94, Aledo, formerly of Taylor Ridge, are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Family Funeral Services, Reynolds. Burial is in Preemption cemetery .

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, with an Order of Eastern Star service at 6 p.m. conducted by Andalusia Chapter 617. Memorials may be made to Taylor Ridge United Methodist Church, where she was a member, and Vashti Village, Aledo.

Mrs. Bieri died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Mercer County Home, Aledo.

She was born Feb. 23, 1906, near Taylor Ridge, the daughter of Cyrus G. and Georgia Heath McMichael. She married A. Clark Cook Sept. 6, 1933, in Taylor Ridge. He died Nov. 4, 1962. She married Ben Bieri Nov. 24, 1964, in Taylor Ridge. He died March 12, 1989.

She attended Brown's Business College. She worked as a cook at Andalusia Grade School for 15 years, retiring in 1970.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 617, Andalusia, serving as their organist for many years, and Aledo Senior Citizens.

Surviving are daughter-in-law, Molly Cook, Taylor Ridge; sons and spouse, Vernon and Nancy Clark Cook, and Glen Cook, all of Rock Island; grandchildren, Joel, Steven and Dennis Cook and Deanna Parchert; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a great-grandson and a sister, Julia Gruske Bingman.

Jennie Caldwell
Jennie Frances Caldwell, 83, Galesburg, died Feb. 18, 2001, at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Turnbull Funeral Home, Monnmouth. Burial is in Monmouth cemetery . Her family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to service time Thursday. Friends also may call Wednesday.

She was born Dec. 19, 1917, in Monmouth, the daughter of Henry and Fay Fisher Hanson Sr.

Survivors are a son, Roger Caldwell, Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Vicki Medrano, Hebron, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Law, Monmouth, and Jeanne Orwig, Kewanee; brothers, Henry Hanson Jr. and Richard Hanson, both of Bettendorf, and Art Hanson, Monmouth; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces.

Esther Grant
Esther Grant, 85, Kewanee, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at home.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial is in Osceola cemetery .

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials to Free Methodist or Kewanee Hospital Hospice Unit.

She was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Kewanee to Edward and Elizabeth Felton Phillips. She married James Grant July 1932 in Kewanee. He died Nov. 23, 1977.

Survivors include sons, James, Montrose, Mich., Philip, Waukegan, Ill., and Charles, Kewanee; daughters, Mrs. Michael Haptonstall and Grace Hufnagel, both of Kewanee; 25 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Rozetta, California; and a brother, Harold Phillips, Montrose.

Franklin Noblet
Services for Franklin Noblet, 58, Colona, are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, with military rites conducted by East Moline American Legion Post 227 and VFW Post 2056. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Noblet died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at home.

He was born Nov. 28, 1942, in Walker, Ala., the son of Franklin Arvel and Verdie Madison Noblet. He married Linda Schmooke in September 1963 in Rock Island.

Mr. Noblet had been a lathe operator at Farmall, Rock Island, for 15 years and later did pipe construction, retiring in 1996 due to poor health. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served four years. He lived in the Quad-Cities for 40 years.

He enjoyed fishing and horse racing.

Survivors (and spouses) are daughters, Diana (Fred) Larson, Moline, Tammy (Herman) Boggs, Colona, Jodi (Samuel) Brown, Detroit, Mich., and Penny Avila, Moline; son, Franklin (Angela) Noblet, Rock Island; 18 grandchildren; sisters, Pauline Smith, Juanita Davis, Dean West, Betty Aaron and Mary Bradford, all of Alabama, and Linda Wyers, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by sisters, Nora Douglas, Christine Maddox and Hazel Wasford; and brothers, Edward and Eugene Noblet.

Gretchen Slager
Services for Gretchen Slager, 84, Southern Knights in Tomball, Texas, formerly of Morrison, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison. Burial is in Grove Hill cemetery , Morrison. Visitation is 1 p.m. to service time.

She died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in Southern Knights. She was born March 30, 1916, in Knoxville, Ill., to John and Luetta Bell Hillman. She married Wilson Slager Sept. 16, 1941, in Galesburg. He died Nov. 29, 1985.

She worked at the Ice Box Restaurant, Morrison. She was a former member of Morrison United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Bach, Tomball; a son, Thomas, Denver, Colo.; five grandsons; a sister, Opal Miner, Salt Lake City, Utah; and a brother, Robert Hillman, Eureka, Ill.

Donavon Swartz
Donavon Swartz, 78, Kewanee, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

Private memorial services will be at Mount Olivet cemetery , with military rites by Kewanee Veterans Council. Cremation rites have been accorded. There is no visitation. Arrangements by Schueneman and Tumbleson, Kewanee.

He was born Dec. 10, 1922, in Kewanee to Charlie and Leona Lippens Swartz.

He worked at Kewanee Boiler Co., retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kewanee, and a lifetime member of Kewanee VFW Post 8078. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII in the European Theater. He enjoyed college basketball.

Survivors include a sister, Elaine Swartz, Kewanee. He was preceded by a brother, Francis.

Margaret Wreath
Margaret M. Wreath, 92, formerly of Hillsdale, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Pleasant Point cemetery , Port Byron.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today, with an Eastern Star Service at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hillsdale United Methodist Church.

The former Margaret Kempster was born March 13, 1908, in rural Hillsdale, the daughter of Wallace R. and Bertha D. Glatthaar Kempster. She married Ford H. Wreath Dec. 30, 1934, in Aledo. He died July 7, 1991.

She had been a teacher for 50 years in Whiteside County and Erie schools.

Mrs. Wreath was a member of Hillsdale United Methodist Church, Evangeline Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Erie, a bridge club, the National Education Association, the Illinois Education Association, the Retired Teachers Association, the Rock Island County Farm Bureau and the Past Matrons Club of Eastern Star and was a 50-year member of Royal Neighbors of America. She had been a member of the Hillsdale School Board and had served as secretary.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ardda Fae and Marvin McRell, Bettendorf; a son and daughter-in-law, W. Wayne and Mary Beth Wreath, Juneau, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Berry
Services for Robert Berry, 79, Davenport, are 1 p.m. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 11 a.m. to service time.

He died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg, Pa.

He was born Dec. 10, 1921, in Bloomfield, Iowa, to Paul and Fern Fullerton Berry. He married Margaret Elizabeth Conner July 15, 1950, in Arkansas. She died July 13, 1994.

He retired in 1983 after 32 years as a bridleman in the coal mill at Alcoa, Riverdale, Iowa. He was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church, Davenport.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Zigler, Halifax, Pa.; four grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Hawkins, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Barbara Brown, Iowa.
