Lenolee Serandos
Lenolee Power Serandos, 85, Solana Beach, Calif., formerly of Rock Island and East Moline, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, in Encinitas, Calif.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary Ltd., East Moline. Dr. J. Keith Zimmerman will officiate. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

She was born March 28, 1915, in Mercer, Mo., the daughter of Leonard and Addie Blaker Power. She married Nicholas Serandos Nov. 11, 1934.

She and her husband owned and operated the former Serandos Supperette grocery store in Rock Island for 10 years prior to moving to California in 1955.

She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and a former member of Rock Island Methodist Church and of Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline.

Survivors include her husband, Nicholas; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Ann Serandos, Solana Beach; and grandchildren, Jeffery Serandos, Robert Serandos, and Gregory and Takako Serandos. She was preceded in death by brothers, Herb, Jean, Ferrell and Hiram Power.

LaNeta Bergheger
LaNeta G. Bergheger, 56, Andalusia, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Family Funeral Services, Milan.

Alfva Borg
Alfva C. Borg, 93, formerly of Bishop Hill, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Galva. Burial is in Bishop Hill cemetery . Visitation is 1 p.m. to service time. Memorials go to the family.

She was born Dec. 28, 1906, in Andover to Jonas and Pauline Johnson Bergren. She married A. Gunnar Borg Sept. 22, 1935, in Bishop Hill. He died Sept. 11, 1984.

She and her husband operated Bergren Hardware & Implement in Bishop Hill for 40 years. She was a member of Bishop Hill Community Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ona Rae Noel, Bishop Hill; a son, Richard, Hooppole; and five grandchildren. She was preceded by a grandson, Brent Noel, and a twin sister, Alfhild Oberg.

Florence Looney
Florence B. DuBord Looney, 80, Galena, Ill., died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at home, surrounded by family.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Cremation will follow, and burial will be at a later date.

Friends may call from noon to service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Florence was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Galena to Raymond and Bernice Nicholls DuBord. She married Joseph Looney July 5, 1958.

She spent all her life in the Galena area. Florence took care of the elderly people in her home for 35 years until her retirement.

Survivors (and spouses) include her husband, Joseph; children, Frank Molitor, David (Cookie) Molitor, Larry (Joyce) Molitor, Sally Smith Frazer, Betty Smith Schetgen, and Tom (Jenny) Smith; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Eleanor (Richard) Funk and Hazel Hamaker. She was preceded in death by siblings, Charles, Raymond and Daisy DuBord; husbands, Francis Molitor and Henry Smith; infant children, Raymond Molitor and Henrietta Smith; children, Dolly Molitor Heinle, Jean Molitor Hess and Richard Molitor; and a grandchild, Lawrence J. Molitor.

Duwain Mettlin
Duwain C. Mettlin, 63, rural Cambridge, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cambridge Chapel, Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cambridge Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Duwain Mettlin was born Sept. 3, 1936, in Marion, Iowa, the son of Earl and Ruth Gilford Mettlin. He graduated from Biggsville (Ill.) High School in 1954. He served in the Marines.

He married Anna Stevens Nov. 23, 1960, in Rock Island.

Mr. Mettlin was employed as a truck mechanic at the Alcoa plant in Riverdale, Iowa, for 37 years, retiring in 1998.

He was a member of AARP, EAA Ultralights Pilot Association, and the AFL/CIO local. He enjoyed flying planes, stock-car racing, and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Jackie Mettlin, Osco, and Steven and Rebecca Mettlin, Hazelwood, Mo.; grandchildren, Justin, Shauntia, Anthony, Teddra, Ariel and Emily; a sister and brother-in-law, Myvone and LaMoyne Elsey, Rock Island; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and a stepdaughter, Allana Morgan, preceded him in death.

Henry `Ray' Steagall
Henry ``Ray" Steagall, 72, Matherville, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000.

Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

He was born May 13, 1928, in Abingdon, Va., the son of John and Mattie Terry Steagall. He married ``Carol" Miller in October 1963 in Galesburg.

He was employed at John Deere Plow & Planter, Moline. He was a member of the AFL-CIO and American Legion Post 2910.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, having served in the European Theater. He enjoyed his horses and playing golf, pool and cards.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Michael Stevens, Maquoketa, Iowa, and Renea and Donald Hainline Jr., Coyne Center; a stepson, Ron Miller, Matherville; grandchildren, Jyme Lynn Stevens, Daulton Hainline and Lacey Hainline; and a brother, Melvin Steagall, in Virginia.

Francis Vermeire
Francis Vermeire, 62, Annawan, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at home.

Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, where further arrangements are pending.

Donny Martin
Donny Estil Martin, 50, Davenport, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at home.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials go to the family.

He was born in Davenport to Estil and Colene Glines Martin.

Survivors include his mother, Novinger, Mo.; a sister, Karen Wood, Davenport; and brothers, Danny, Bettendorf, and Dennis, Taylor Ridge. He was preceded in death by his father March 16, 2000.

Opal Neels
Opal F. Neels, 100, of 3705 9th St., Rock Island, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care, Rock Island, one day after her birthday.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park.

Visitation is 5 to 7 tonight at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis, with a rosary at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church.

She was born Jan. 16, 1901, in Brighton City, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Lula Hesseltine Heffelfinger. She married LeRoy Calvin in 1923. She later married Arthur Neels in 1938. He died in 1977.

She was a homemaker and had worked as a nurse's aide. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include a son, LeRoy P. Barth, Rock Island; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Orville Petersen
Services for Orville H. Petersen, 86, of Rock Island, are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation is 5 to 7 tonight with additional visitation 9:30 a.m. to service time Friday.

He died Monday, Jan 15, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

He was born Sept. 28, 1914, in Davenport, to Alexander and Karen Jensen Petersen. He married Beatrice Mountain Nov. 2, 1968, in Rock Island.

Mr. Petersen was a machine operator at Bear Manufacturing Co., Rock Island, retiring in 1979. He also enjoyed fixing televisions.

He was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Island.

He is survived by his wife and sons and daughters-in-law; Gordon and Donna, Longview, Tenn., Gary and Linda, Hawarden, Iowa; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Orville Short
Orville Short, 84, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Gertrude `Stella'
Smiley

Gertrude E. ``Stella" Smiley, 97, Rock Island, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial is in the New Windsor cemetery .

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or to a favorite charity.

Gertrude Peterson was born Dec. 10, 1903 in New Windsor, the daughter of John and Elizabeth ``Bessie" Johnson Peterson. She married Wayne L. Smiley, May 12, 1926 in New Windsor. He died March 28, 1979.

Stella was a homemaker, but during WWII worked at the Rock Island Arsenal, later working at the former Yerbury-Dana Cleaners, Rock Island. As a young woman, she worked in the Peterson-Johnson General Store, New Windsor, co-owned by her father.

She loved her family and enjoyed being with them.

Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Davis, Sherrard and Sandra Tertipes, Moline; a daughter-in-law, Linda Smiley, Rock Island; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Smiley in 1999, a daughter, Madeline Daveronas in 2000 and a sister, Violet Dawson in 1994.

Rosemargaret Ziegler
Rosemargaret Ziegler, 82, of 2448 18th Ave., Rock Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with the Rev. James K. Ramer officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a rosary service at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family.

Rosemargaret was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Rock Island, the daughter of Edward J. and Rose Engel Ziegler.

She was employed at the former Servus Rubber Company, Rock Island, for 35 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Rock Island.

Survivors include sisters, Pearl Ziegler, Amelia Black and Lillian Quinones, all of Rock Island, Anna Marie Taylor, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Catherine Grindle, Geneseo; and a brother, Joseph E. Ziegler, Rock Island.

Herschel Cook
Herschel L. Cook, 78, of Moline, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

Dorothy Jefferson
Dorothy V. Jefferson, 81, of East Moline, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Graveside services are 1 p.m. Friday at National Cemtery, Arsenal Island, the Rev. Chris Meyer officiating.

Dorothy was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Moline, the daughter of Earl S. and Lola Truxell Campbell. She married Raymond P. Jefferson Oct. 12, 1951, in Salem, Ark. He preceded her in death.

Dorothy loved her family, had been an avid bowler, loved animals and enjoyed crocheting and reading.

Survivors (and spouses) are sons, Ronald (Carol) Cobert and Raymond R. Jefferson, both of Moline; Bill Boehler, Rock Island, and Collin Jefferson, East Moline; a daughter, Beverly (Don) Davidson, East Moline; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Audrey) Campbell, Moline; and a sister-in-law, Helen Campbell, Hampton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, and a brother, Colin Campbell.

Helen Simpson
Services for Helen Jane Lyford Simpson, 93, Silvis, formerly of Port Byron, are 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Port Byron, where she was a member. Burial is in Fairfield cemetery , Port Byron. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Memorials may be made to the church.

She died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

The former Helen Jane Lyford was born March 4, 1907, in Coe Township, the daughter of Edward Hall and Elnora Haubert Lyford. She attended Port Byron Community High School, the University of Illinois and graduated from Western Illinois University. She married Virgil Simpson June 1, 1936, in Port Byron. He preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1979. They farmed in Coe Township until his death.

Helen taught at Pleasant Point School, Hillsdale High School and Riverdale Junior High. She was a longtime member of the Coe Home Extension, Rock Island County Historical Society, Black Hawk Hiking Club and had been a 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher. She was particularly interested in family genealogy and Port Byron area history.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Barbara Simpson, Port Byron; granddaughters (and spouses) Susan (Trent) Lorfeld, Cordova, and Sandee (Brent) Andrews, Bettendorf; great-grandsons, Chase and Clark Whitsell and Spencer and Sawyer Andrews; a sister, Ada Mary Burke, Rock Island; nieces, Cynthia Burke, East Moline, and Janet Dissauer, Carmel, Ind; and a nephew, Fred Burke, Mount Vernon, Iowa.
