Michael Pittman
U.S. Army Pfc. Michael Patrick Pittman, 34, a former resident of Davenport, was killed in action Friday, June 15, 2007, while serving with the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry, Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based out of Ft. Riley, Kan.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 22, at First Assembly of God Church, Bettendorf. Full military honors will follow at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Michael was born March 17, 1973, in Davenport, the son of Ron and Sandra Shoemaker Pittman. On Oct. 14, 1994, he was united in marriage to Jennifer M. Frias in Orlando, Fla.

On Aug. 25, 2005, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army and had served in Iraq since February.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Jennifer; their children, Reannah, Micah, Christian and Joy; his mother and father, Sandra and Frank Hughes, Rock Island; his sister, Becky and her husband, Jay Wilson, Bettendorf; and his brothers, Kirk Pittman, Iowa City, and his fiancee, Michelle, and Mark Woodruff and his wife, Teresa, Geneseo. His biological father, Ron, preceded Michael in death.

Eunice L. Lass

Died: Tue Oct 26, 2010

Eunice L. Lass, 91, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of Clinton, Iowa died on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 29, 2010 at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Bettendorf where she was a devoted member. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn cemetery , Clinton, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the church. Memorials may be made to the pre-school program at Our Savior Lutheran Church. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.

She was born May 31, 1919 in Oak Park, Illinois, the daughter of Paul & Irene (Hitzmann) Heyman and was a graduate of the former Lyons High School in Clinton.

On May 6, 1939, she was united in marriage to Harry R. Lass in Clinton. He preceded her in death on August 30, 1999.

Eunice was an accomplished and expert seamstress who did alterations of all kinds in her home for many years. In earlier years, she worked at Jamie’s Apparel at Cumberland Square in Bettendorf.

In addition to her sewing, she enjoyed knitting for area shelters, nursing homes and shut-ins and truly loved cooking and baking for her beloved family and friends. Eunice was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed reading in her spare time.

Those left to honor her memory include her sons, Tom (Judy) Lass of Mt. Vernon, Iowa and David (Margaret) Lass of Toledo, Ohio; her grandchildren, Brad (Bonnie) Lass of Mt. Vernon and Jill (Tom) Swierczewski of South Elgin, Illinois; her great-grandchildren, Sydney & Devin Swierczewski and Dillon & Jamie Lass; her sister-in-law, Helen Hicks of Largo, Florida; and her nieces & nephews across the country especially Loraine Lind and Janice Greenley of Clinton, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Naeve; her brother, Don Heyman; her parents; and her step-mother, Edith Heyman whom she thought of as a mother.

Dorothy Eagleson-McKibbin

Died: Sat Oct 30, 2010

Dorothy Eagleson-McKibbin, 91, a resident of Buffalo, Iowa and formerly of Canton, Missouri died Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport, Iowa.

Visitation will be held Tuesday November 2, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf, Iowa and a second visitation will be held Wednesday November 3, 2010 after 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton. Burial will be in Forest Grove cemetery in Canton. Memorials may be made to the Handicapped Development Center of Davenport.

Dorothy was born June 2, 1919 in Canton, the daughter of George Fred and Catherine Wheeler Wolf. Dorothy was a homemaker and a member of Westside Assembly of God Church in Davenport.

She was married to William Eagleson in 1939 and he preceded her in death on June 11, 1976. She later married Kenneth McKibbin on Sept. 8, 1980 and he preceded her in death in May of 1997.

Those left to honor her memory include her son, Robert Eagleson of Canton; her daughters, Thelma (Gerald) Epperson of Rock Island, Illinois, Rebecca (Kenneth) Bross of Canton, and Patricia Bergstrom of Harvard, Illinois; her sisters Ilene Marie Marks and Freda Jacobs both of Canton; twelve grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; her step-sons and their wives, Gary and Roxanne McKibbin of Walcott, Iowa and Larry and Mindy McKibbin of Jackson, Tennessee; four step-daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Bill Guizar of Davenport, Donna and Ray Hicks of Blue Grass, Iowa, Linda and Bob Van Hoorghi of Cordova, Illinois and Cindy and Don Mosier of Buffalo; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her brothers, Clarence (Pete) and Fred William (Buddy) Wolf; her sister, Virginia Wolf; her daughters, Dorothy Traum and Marjorie Keppler; and her son William (Billy) Eagleson.

Roberta B. (Chase) Fluharty

Died: Fri Oct 29, 2010

Roberta B. Fluharty, 89, a resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died Friday, October 29, 2010 at Wheaton Franciscan Hospice, Milwaukee. A prayer services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Church. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the church where she was a faithful member.McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.

Roberta Bell Chase was born on November 19, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Drake College with a degree in teaching. She taught grammar school until 1943 when she met and married George O. Fluharty on July, 24, 1943. A lifelong volunteer she was presented an award by the state governor for her contribution of service to the elderly of her community. Roberta was a member of Asbury Methodist Church for over 40 years. She is survived by her son, George M. Fluharty of Milwaukee Wisconsin and will also be remembered by her friends and members of her community.

Mark E. Schaefer

Died: Sun Oct 10, 2010

Mark Earl Schaefer, 51, a resident of Marco Island, Florida formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at his home of an apparent heart attack.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 8, 2010 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery , Davenport, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Monday. Contributions in his memory may be made to Camp Courageous of Monticello, Iowa, the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children of Chicago, Illinois or the American Heart Association.

He was born May 20, 1959 in Davenport, the son of Earl & Ruth (Pokorny) Schaefer. Mark grew up in Bettendorf and graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1977. He lived on Marco Island for over 20 years where he worked as a bartender the the Marriott Hotel. In earlier years, he was employed at Therma-Cold/Birdseye of Bettendorf.

Mark, being a bachelor, enjoyed spending time with his nieces & nephews, family & friends, sharing his sense of humor, (but not his winnings on scratch-offs or PowerBall) and playing cards. He collected John Deere memorabilia and was fond of Jim’s Ribs and Happy Joes Taco Pizza. He also received many Gold Keys from the Marriott for outstanding services. Mark will be great missed by those who knew & loved him.

Those left to honor his memory include his mother, Ruth Schaefer of Bettendorf; his sisters, Judy (John) Fitzgibbon of LeClaire, Iowa and Karen (Tim) MacDade of Marco Island; his brother, Mike (Kim) Schaefer of Bettendorf; his nieces & nephews, Sarah Sexton, Shelley Johnson, Amy Fitzgibbon, Allison Schaefer, Marianne McGee, Scott Mulvania, Ryan MacDade, Alex Schaefer and John Fitzgibbon III; four great-nieces and great-nephews; and many friends, especially Betty, Mary, Tom, Cam & John.

He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Schaefer; and all of his grandparents.

Mark, we will miss you greatly, rest in peace.

Eraine M. Perron

Died: Thu Nov 4, 2010

Eraine Mae Perron, 84, a resident of Coal Valley, Illinois passed away November 4, 2010 after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, November 8, 2010 at the First United Presbyterian Church, 801 16th St., Moline, Illinois. Burial will be in the Rock Island National cemetery , Rock Island, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Sunday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or to the church.

She was born May 22, 1926 in Kenyon, Minnesota to Obert and Helen (Jones) Wickum and was a graduate of the Moline Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing. She married Clarence Joseph Perron on November 12, 1948 in Rock Island. They were just shy of celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary.

She was a surgical and office nurse for Dr. Flatley’s Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat office in Moline for 35 1/2 years and retired in 1983. Joe and Eraine spent their early retirement years in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas enjoying time on the golf course, fishing, swimming and making new friends.

Eraine loved spending time with family and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family is what brought Joe and Eraine back to the Quad Cities. You could often find Eraine in the kitchen baking special treats for the kids. She also had a strong love for reading and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Moline for many years.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph, Coal Valley; brother, Richard (Lori) Wickum, Moline; three children: Diane (Glenn) Jeffrey, Coal Valley; Patricia (Robert) Mulherin, Moline and Steve (Kathy) Perron, Indianapolis; grandchildren: Tara (Chris) Allen, Heather (Nathan) Brewer, Nicole Bussard, Brian (Megan) Mulherin, Beth (Tom) Hawkinson, Adam Mulherin, Allison Mulherin, Andrew Perron, Grant Perron and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her niece, Cindy Stone; her sister, Betty Alden and her parents.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Heartland Health Care Center for their professional and loving care during this difficult time.

Marylen Jean Benson

Died: Wed Nov 3, 2010

Marylen Jean Benson, 72, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the Bettendorf Healthcare Center, Bettendorf, Iowa.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. She will be laid to rest at Pine Hill cemetery , Davenport, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for their holiday basket program.

She was born March 7, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Herman H. & Leona M. (Thomas) Rathmann.

Marylen was a waitress and bartender at several Quad-City area restaurants and taverns. She loved to play bingo and in earlier years, enjoyed crocheting.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Deborah Dawson of Davenport; her sons, Dan Dawson of Anamosa, Iowa and Carl Dawson of Davenport; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sister, Pat Kalquist of Bettendorf; her brother, Gary Grell of Norfolk, Virginia; and many nieces & nephews.

Marylen was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Michelle Dawson; her father, Herman Rathmann; and her mother, Leona Zugg.

Esther A. Makepeace-Goodnight

Died: Sat Nov 6, 2010

Esther A. Makepeace-Goodnight, 96, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, November 11, 2010 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the V.F.W. Post 9128 in Bettendorf.

Esther was born August 25, 1914 in Fairfield, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur Truman and Daisy Mae (Oliver) Smith. She was united in marriage to Fred W. “Pete” Makepeace on August 24, 1933 in Centerville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 8, 1975. She was then united in marriage to Leonard Goodnight on March 17, 1984. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1991.

Esther had been a housekeeper for various homes in earlier years. She was a member of Central Church of Christ in Davenport. She enjoyed her time spent with her family and will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Donna & Donald Goldermann of Bettendorf; her son and daughter-in-law, Freddie & Veronica Makepeace of Warner Springs, California; six grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, Pete and Leonard, Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Joan Makepeace; her son, Jesse Makepeace; her granddaughters, Jody Smith and Tracy Makepeace; and her sisters, Margaret West, Evelyn Goodnight, Mildred Liblin, Martha Smith and Ruby Rochau.

Nathaniel C. Johnson

Died: Mon Nov 8, 2010

Nathaniel C. “Nate” Johnson, 67, a resident of Davenport, Iowa passed away on Monday, November 08, 2010 at his home surrounded by his beloved family.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 12, 2010 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

He was born April 5, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of John & Marion Louise (Rusan) Johnson.

Nate was employed as a machine operator at the former Caterpillar Tractor Company of Bettendorf and at the former Blackhawk Foundry. In earlier years, he was employed as a cook.

Among the things he enjoyed were bowling, hard work, spending time out-of-doors and the companionship of his family.

Prior to Nate’s illness, he was a member of the Westside Assembly of God Church of Davenport.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Jackie S. Banks-Johnson; his daughters, Tina Johnson-Vera of Harker Heights, Texas, Lucille Johnson & her fiancé, James of Peoria, Illinois; Millie (Donnie) Heyvaert of Davenport and Waynette (K.K. Luanglath) Johnson of Brandon, Florida; his sons, Nathaniel C. (Boyaphanh) Johnson II of Des Moines, Iowa, Byron Johnson of Davenport and Michael (Kristy) Gomez of Davenport; twenty-one grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; his sister, Gladys Mildred (Thomas) Humburd Sr. of Donnelson, Iowa; his brothers, Dr. John Johnson of Blue Grass, Iowa, Archie (Beverly) Johnson of Davenport, Rev. Henry Johnson of Davenport and Kenneth (Irma) Johnson of Davenport; and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Nate was preceded in death by his daughter, Twonia Lynn Lester Johnson; his mother, Marion Norwood; his step-father, Clifford Norwood; his father, John Johnson; and his brothers, Byron R. Johnson and Stanley E. Johnson.

Caryl L. Graham

Died: Wed Nov 10, 2010

Caryl Louise Graham, 90, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of Princeton, Iowa died on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Bettendorf Healthcare Center.

Private family services will be held at Clinton Lawn cemetery , Clinton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Bettendorf Healthcare Center. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.

She was born in Princeton on June 7, 1920, the daughter of Amos & Cora Jones. On September 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leonard C. Graham at Zion Lutheran Church in Princeton. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2003.

Caryl was a devoted homemaker, wife & mom. She was a wonderful cook, enjoyed gardening and loved caring for her flowers. At age 90, she was the oldest living member of Zion Lutheran Church of Princeton.

Those left to honor her memory include her son, Steve (Karen) Graham of Princeton; her grandchildren, Aundrea Graham and Erick (Melissa) Graham; her great-grandchildren, Ethan & Nolan; and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Graham of LeClaire, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Waldo Jones; and by her half-sisters, Irene Benson and Margaret Pruitt.

Robert J Hawkins

Died: Thu Nov 11, 2010

Robert J. Hawkins, 75, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, died peacefully on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 A.M., Monday, November 15, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Church in Delmar, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. A Christian Wake Service will be recited at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery in Delmar. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church of Bettendorf.

Robert was born January 31, 1935 in Norton, Virginia, the son of Wesley & Edith (Fleenor) Hawkins. He was united in marriage to Madonna V. Cook on September 21, 1957 at St. Patrick’s Church in Delmar.

Bob was a graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport and practiced chiropractic medicine for two years. He also served in the United States Army for two years before he was honorably discharged.

Bob retired in 1993 from Navistar International where he had been employed for over thirty years, and he briefly was employed in Indianapolis. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

He enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing, camping, watching the Chicago Cubs and following the Indy 500. Bob also enjoyed the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and he enjoyed vacationing in Sanabel Island, Florida.

Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Madonna; his daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia & Roger Tuftee of Davenport, Sandra & Steve Ferguson of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Virginia & Kortney Kotz of Mechanicsville, Iowa and Katherine & Kevin Cary of Bettendorf; his sons and daughter-in-law, David & Rhonda Hawkins of New Liberty, Iowa and Robert & Rebecca Hawkins of Knoxville, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Eric and Ethan Tuftee, Mackenzie and Skyler Ferguson, Kaylee and Clarissa Kotz and Taylor, Brock and Drake Cary; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles & Bernice Hawkins of Bristol, Virginia and Daniel & Sharon Hawkins of Kinsgport, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Dorothy Mullins and Kay Hawkins; and his brother, Harold Hawkins.
