Lawrence F. Thomas

Died: Sun Jul 22, 2012

Lawrence Franklin “Larry” Thomas, 79, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Union cemetery in rural Scott County where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Thusday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the Iowa Hospice.

He was born on May 7, 1933 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Joseph Franklin & Alpharetta May (Fisher) Thomas. On January 9, 1965, he was united in marriage to Lorena L. Otto in Davenport.

During the Korean Conflict, Larry served as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1957.

He retired on June 1, 1988 from the J. I. Case Company in Rock Island, Illinois after 23 years of service as a layout inspector and in management.

In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf, bowling, fishing, camping and hunting. His beloved family was the joy of his life and although they will miss him, the wonderful memories he created for them will live forever.

Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Lorena; his daughters, Marsha (Thomas) Diercks of Donahue, Iowa and Barbara (Thomas) Phelps of Davenport; his sons, Russell (Kelley) Thomas of Blue Grass, Iowa and Darrell (Stephanie) Thomas of Bettendorf; fourteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Virginia Cornett of Centerville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lila Lee (Larry’s twin), Gussie, Marie, Maureen, Charlotte, Lenora, June & Mildred; and his brothers, Floyd, Lloyd & Edward.

Lester F. Shields

Died: Tue Jul 24, 2012

Lester Franklin Shields, 87, of Bettendorf, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 24, 2012.

A “home-going” celebration will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 27, 2012 at Calvary Church of the Quad Cities, 4700 53rd St., Moline, Illinois with Rev. Tim Bowman officiating. Friends may greet the family from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Interment will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at Evergreen cemetery in Lineville, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family.

Lester was born in Mercer, Missouri on May 14, 1925 to Millard W. & Elsie M. (Collins) Shields. On September 27, 1942 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary Jane Henley in Mercer. In lieu of a honeymoon, they spent the first few days of their married life working the “cane fields”. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in September 2012.

Lester served his country in the United States Army during World War II, spending time in Japan and other areas overseas. He had the privilege of taking an Honor Flight to Washington D.C., escorted by grandson, Specialist Matt McIntosh, a member of the United States Army.

He farmed for many years in Mercer County, Missouri. After losing a hand in a farm accident, his career path changed and he took to the road, working for Ryder Trucking as an over-the-road driver. He received several accolades for his superior driving record despite his handicap. He retired from Del’s Iron & Metal in Davenport, Iowa.

He was a man of faith, student of the Word and an awesome prayer warrior. He was an encouragement to all. When he wasn’t spending time with family, he loved walking at the park, having coffee with friends at Hy-Vee and playing a mean game of Pitch. He was a past member of First Assembly of God in Bettendorf for many years and an active member of Calvary Church of the Quad Cities as of late.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane (Henley) Shields of Bettendorf; his children, Donna (Jim) Crossland of Davenport, Diana (Ken) Spranger of Bettendorf, Larry (Jeannene) McIntosh of Johnston, Iowa, Laurel (Paula) McIntosh of McCausland, Iowa, Dave (Betty) McIntosh of Davenport, Lena (Reggie) Freeman of East Moline, Illinois and Letha (Joe) Dolph of Clinton, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two brothers, Paul (Alene) Shields of Kilgore, Texas and Carrol Dean (Linda) Shields of Mercer. Other surviving family includes sister-in–laws Marjorie Shields of Lineville, Jean Henley of Mercer, Lucy Hamilton of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Marie (Ron) Johnson of Missouri and Ruth (Orville) Meredith of Bettendorf; his brother-in-laws Phillip Henley and Jim Slattery of Arizona, Glen (Ginger) Henley of LaPlata, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lawrence Shields; his son-in-law, Bob VanWychen; and his great-great grandson, Trey Holst.

Special thanks and appreciation are extended from Lester’s family to Bettendorf Health Care and Hospice Compasses for their loving, compassionate care.

Linda Lou (Milligan) Stearman

Died: Thu Jul 26, 2012

Linda Lou Stearman, 73, a resident of LeClaire, Iowa died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale cemetery , LeClaire, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family or to the Gilda’s Club.

Linda was born July 11, 1939 in Coleta, Illinois the daughter of Doris White. She was united in marriage to Everett Donald Stearman on October 6, 1956.

Linda retired from Caterpillar Incorporated after fourteen years of service.

She enjoyed gardening, birds, especially humming birds and spending time with her family.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Everett “Don-X”, LeClaire; her children, Kathy (Melvin) Dodds, LeClaire, Donald (René) Stearman, LeClaire, David (Laura) Stearman, Princeton, Iowa, Dennis (Stacy) Stearman, LeClaire, Tammy (Scott) Schleisman, Bettendorf and Daniel Stearman, Edgewater, Florida; her grandchildren, Jeramy, Brittnay, Colin, Zachary, Sarah, Lucas and Drew; her mother, Doris White, Rock Falls, Illinois; her sisters, Dixie (Ron) Vegter, Morrison, Illinois and Joyce (Rich) Thomas, Albany, Illinois; her brothers, Eddie (Sue) Milligan, Rock Falls and Clay White, Rock Falls; several nieces and nephews and many loving friends.

Marilyn Joyce (Powers) Chambers

Died: Wed Aug 1, 2012

Marilyn Joyce Chambers, 80, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at her home.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, August 6, 2012 at the Rock Island National cemetery , Rock Island, Illinois. Those wishing to attend should gather at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa at 9:15 A.M. Monday. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to the family who will donate all funds to the American Cancer Society.

Marilyn was born March 31, 1932 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the daughter of Ernest and Hazel (Simpkins) Powers. She was united in marriage to Keith E. Chambers in Oskaloosa on January 21, 1951.

Marilyn was a very active member of the Bettendorf Christian Church, Bettendorf. She enjoyed writing poems, painting and spending time with her grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Debra Stephens, Bettendorf; her son, Dan (Xinia) Chambers, Irvine, California; her grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary, Brandi, Jeremy, Justin, Daniela, Lorena and Sofia; her great granddaughter, Zara; her sister, Evelyn (Dick) Stephen, Sioux City, Iowa and Patti (Bill) Cleland, Oskaloosa; her special friends, Donald and Norma Jones, Bettendorf and her many other church friends.

In addition to her husband, Keith, she was preceded in death by her son, Douglas Chambers, her brothers, Carroll “Ernie” Powers and Kenneth Powers and her sisters, Donna Cubit, Arlene Emmons and Margaret Stought.

Lee F. Stockwell

Died: Thu Aug 2, 2012

Lee F. Stockwell, 73, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Manor Care, Davenport.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 6, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in the Rock Island National cemetery , Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the family.

Lee was born February 8, 1939 in Algona, Iowa the son of Lemuel and Louise (Callies) Stockwell. He grew up in Titonka, Iowa where he graduated from Titonka High School in 1956. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958 and spent the next four years in the USMC Reserves. He was united in marriage to Georgia Kruse on August 20, 1960 in Worthington, Minnesota.

Lee owned a bakery in Pocahontas, Iowa for many years and later became the manager of manufacturing for Chef Pierre in Mississippi. He also worked for Sara Lee in Iowa and Michigan and was plant manager for Foxtail Foods, Fairfield, Ohio. In his free time he enjoyed golfing and being with his grandchildren.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Georgia Stockwell, Bettendorf; his daughter, Melissa (Andy) McMahon, Bettendorf; his son, Lance (Amy) Stockwell, Bettendorf; his grandchildren Ashley, Erin, Addison and Garrett; his sister Patricia Haines, Titonka, Iowa and his brother, Jerry Stockwell, Modesto, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Priscilla Earl.

Mary Lou (Kelsey) Major

Born: Sat May 19, 1934
Died: Thu Aug 2, 2012

Mary Lou Major, 78, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Rock Island National cemetery . Visitation will be held on Monday, August 6, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mary was born on May 19, 1934 in Chillicothe, IA, the daughter of Edward and Clara Shilling Kelsey. On October 25, 1958 in Chillicothe, she married Kenneth Wayne Major. He preceded her in death on October 6, 2000.

Mary worked as a cashier for Bishop’s Buffet and Walgreens. She also held various other retail jobs. Mary enjoyed travelling and spending time with her family.

Those left to honor her memory include, one daughter, Jacqueline (William) Wollenburg of Des Moines; three sons, David Major of Davenport, Rick Major of Davenport and Dale (Marsha) Major of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Kate Wollenburg, Tyler Major, Kyle Major and Alexa Major; three sisters, Becky, Bonnie and Marie and one brother, Paul.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth and three brothers, Keith, Lloyd and Edward.

Myrna Eleanor (Mensing) Magoon

Died: Sun Aug 5, 2012

Myrna Eleanor (Mensing) Magoon, 87, of Bettendorf, Iowa, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, August 5, 2012 after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bettendorf where she was a member. Pastor Keith Piotter will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the church.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday at Cedar Memorial cemetery in Cedar Rapids prior to interment. Pastor David Miller will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Myrna was born August 21, 1924 in Lowden, Iowa, the daughter of Dietrick & Eleanora (Kruckenberg) Mensing. She was baptized on September 14, 1924 and confirmed on April 10, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden.

On February 4, 1953, she was united in marriage to J. Preston Magoon in Lowden. He preceded her in death on September 26, 1991.

Myrna was employed by Rockwell Collins and the Jefferson High School Cafeteria for 18 years. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and taught Sunday school for 5 years at Trinity in Lowden. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids for 55 years and had also sung in choirs for over 30 years. Her memberships included Good Samaritans, Dorcus Society, 2 Bible studies, all church singles and the Trinity Red Hatters.

Those left to honor her memory include her sons, Craig Magoon of Villa Grande, California and Steven Magoon of Bettendorf; her granddaughters, Rachel Magoon of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Kelli Magoon of Bettendorf; her sisters, Luanna Nelson of Costa Mesa, California and Gladys (William) Mundt of Tempe, Arizona; her sister-in-law, Norma Magoon of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Myrna was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael Magoon on June 19, 1986; her two sisters who were stillborn on January 17, 1918 and January 17, 1930; and her brother, Victor Mensing on March 21, 2012.

Florence "Vicki" Carroll

Born: Mon Jun 16, 1919
Died: Sun Aug 5, 2012

Florence “Vicki” Carroll, 93, of Bettendorf, died Sunday, August 5, 2012 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Bettendorf Lions Club. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.

Vicki was born on June 16, 1919, the daughter of Arthur Melvin and Ida (Gulbro) Bersie. She married James Bandy in 1945. He preceded her in death in 1961. Vicki later married John B. Carroll in 1966. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1999.

Vicki worked as a secretary in the administrative offices of the Bettendorf School System and as a director and secretary for Dentist Laboratory Association in Moline. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bettendorf. Vicki was an avid bridge player and was a 500 Club member. Vicki bowled in 31 national bowling tournaments and served as the secretary for Mombowls Bowling League. Vicki was a former director of Davenport/Bettendorf Bowling League.

Those left to honor her memory include two daughters, Sharon (Tom) Brooks of Bettendorf and Beverly Anderson of Sun City, CA; one son, Robert (Dr. Natalia Savchenko) Bandy of El Paso, TX; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathleen Ezelle; one sister, Arlyn Barrango; one brother, Vernon Bersie.

Joseph W. Endreshak

Died: Sat Aug 4, 2012

Funeral services for Joseph W. “Grandpa Joe” Endreshak, 91, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, August 10, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. He will be laid to rest at the Rock Island National cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

He was born October 18, 1920 in Bettendorf, the son of Joe Henry & Anna Irene (Jurnus) Endresak. Joe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his discharge from active duty, he served the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring in 1976.

On May 21, 1945 he was united in marriage to Violet Welch in San Diego, California. She preceded him in death on December 24, 1995.

Joe was employed as a journeyman equipment operator for the former Iowa/Illinois Gas & Electric Company retiring on October 31, 1982 after 31 ½ years of faithful service.

He was a life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 of Bettendorf, a member of the Eastern Iowa Polka Club, the Navy Fleet Reserve Association, AARP, CASI and was a former member of Chancey Lutheran Church of Clinton, Iowa.

Those left to honor his memory include his sons, Terry (Charlene) Endreshak in Florida and Joseph (Kris) Endreshak Jr. in Texas; numerous grandchildren including those he raised, Cindy Schumacher of Bettendorf with whom he resided, Michael Endreshak of Clinton, Iowa and Teresa Crawford of Davenport, Iowa; numerous great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brothers, John (Geri) Endresak, Walter (Roseann) Endresak and James (Connie) Endresak, all of Bettendorf.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Buckenberger; his sister, Elizabeth Tadder; and his brother, Frank Endresak.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the 4th Floor nursing staff at the Kahl Home and the staff at Hospice Compassus for their wonderful & compassionate care and a special thanks to Joe’s extended family, Marlene & Michael Ray who made sure that Joe never missed a holiday, cook-out or a family gathering.

Ruth N. Boyack

Died: Fri Aug 10, 2012

Ruth N. Boyack, 89, of Eldridge, Iowa and formerly of Schofield, Wisconsin, died Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Kahl Home in Davenport, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Davenport. Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge is assisting the family with arrangements. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services on Tuesday at the church. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Restlawn Memorial Park in Wausau, Wisconsin where she will be buried next to her beloved Delbert who preceded her in death on November 6, 1980.

Ruth was born August 1, 1923 in Wausau, the daughter of Fred & Rose (Lambrecht) Kurth. She was united in marriage to Delbert (Del) G. Boyack on July 22, 1946 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.

Ruth was a member of Holy Family for the last 13 years since she moved to Eldridge to live with her daughter. Prior to that, she was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Rothschild, Wisconsin for over 50 years. Her rosary was very important to her and she prayed it daily.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport, to benefit their new rosary garden. She was an avid jigsaw puzzler and enjoyed word search puzzles. She always looked forward to a day at the casino.

While she lived in Wisconsin she was on a bowling league, a member of a dart club and frequently played cards with her friends and relatives.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry & Brian Nauman of Eldridge; her step-granddaughter, Andrea Roelens of Davenport; her step-grandsons, Steven & Chad Boyack of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; her step-great-grandchildren, Isabelle & Michael Roelens Jr.; her step-daughter-in-law, Loretta Boyack of Milwaukee; her brother and sister-in-law, Gene & Bea Kurth of Wausau; and her brother Lloyd Kurth of Goshen, New York

In addition to her husband, Del, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents.
