Gethel A. Sparrow

Died: Tue., Oct. 28, 2014

Gethel Arlene Sparrow, 93, of Davenport, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at her home.

Private graveside services will be held at Fairmount cemetery in Davenport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rivermont Collegiate (formerly St. Katharine’s St. Mark’s School) in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Gethel was born June 15, 1921 in Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of Ada Pearl (Lynch) & Brown Tucker. Her family moved to Davenport when she was a child and she was a graduate of Davenport High School.

She was united in marriage to Harold Carl Sparrow in August of 1940 in Davenport. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1963.

Gethel began work at St. Katharine’s School in 1964 in the alumni office. She later became Business Manager of the school. She continued working at the school, now Rivermont Collegiate until 2006.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha & Chuck Field of Davenport; and her granddaughter, Amy Field and grandson-in-law, Adam Thomas-Brashier of Merriam, Kansas.

In addition to her husband, Gethel was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Evelyn E. Packard

Died: Wed., Oct. 15, 2014

Evelyn E. Packard, 93, a resident of Davenport, Iowa and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. She will be laid to rest at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Scott County Humane Society.

She was born in New Haven, Connecticut on March 6, 1921, the daughter of Edward Henry & Eunice Mae (Tucker) Warner. On July 3, 1943, she was united in marriage to Charles F. Packard in Springfield, Massachusetts. He preceded her in death on February 15, 2007.

Evelyn was a devoted & loving wife, mom, grandma & great-grandma. She always had a special place in her heart for all animals, especially dogs. For many years, she & Charlie enjoyed traveling & camping, especially spending warm winters in Ft. Myers, Florida where they made many wonderful friends.

She & Charlie were long-time and faithful members of Asbury United Methodist Church of Bettendorf.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Janet (Michael Novak) Collins of Colona, Illinois and Nancy (Harry) George of Nicholasville, Kentucky; her daughter-in-law, Diane Packard of Cleves, Ohio; her grandchildren, Andrew Packard, Justin Bales, Michael Collins, Meghan O’Brien, Mark Collins and Nathan Bales; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her son, Edward Packard in 2011; and by her parents.

Mariza DeCap
Mariza V. DeCap, 45, of Rock Island, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in Davenport.

Services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation also will be Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Kabankalan, the Republic of the Philippines. Memorials may be made to the family.

She was born Jan. 17, 1957, in Kabankalan, to Nicolas and Benedicta Vergara. She was a Philippine princess from the island of Cebu.

Mariza was a supervisor at Carlos O'Kelly's in Davenport. Prior to that she worked at Lady Luck Casino and Burger King. She attended Black Hawk College. Mariza enjoyed playing bingo and the slot machines and bowling.

Mariza is survived by her husband, Daniel DeCap, Rock Island; son, Marden, Rock Island; nine brothers and sisters; a host of nieces and nephews; special friend, Ruby Watkins, Rock Island; aunt, Adelia Domingo, New Orleans, La.; cousins, Carmelita March, Davenport, and Alicia Hall, New Orleans. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Adeline DeCap, and a brother.

Manuela Flores Ruiz
Manuela Flores Ruiz, 91, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Aspenwood Health Care Center, Silvis.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Silvis. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Pallbearers will be Armando Murga Jr., Timothy Murga, Steven Murga, Victor Murga, David Murga, Richard Murga and Patricia Murga.

Manuela was born July 17, 1911, in Durango, Mexico, the daughter of Jose and Marcelina Ruiz Flores.

She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island.

Survivors include her nephews, Armando Murga, Jesse Flores, Guillermo Flores, Augustin Flores, Santiago Flores, Fred Flores, Ralph Flores and Dick Flores; and nieces, Lilia Soliz, Janet Reyes and Millie Ruiz. She was preceded in death by brothers, Jesus and Guillermo; twin sister, Margarita; niece, Mary Salias; and nephew, Joe Flores.

Robert Schaeffer
Robert Schaeffer, 74, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at his home.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Michael Siegel
Michael R. Siegel, 87, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Tri City Jewish Center, Rock Island. Burial is in Rock Island Hebrew cemetery . Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Tri City Jewish Center, or to a favorite charity.

Mr. Siegel was born May 25, 1915, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Ida Florence Siegel. He married Sarah Friedman June 21, 1942, in Davenport.

Mike was a co-founder in 1947 of the Jaydon Corp., Rock Island, and served as its secretary/treasurer, retiring in 1979.

He was a member and former officer of the Tri City Jewish Center and currently was serving on its Board of Directors. Mr. Siegel was also a member of the Rock Island Hebrew cemetery Association and served as a trustee of its Endowment Fund. Mike was a member of the Center's Men's Club, B'nai B'rith, the Mayo Legacy, Rochester Minn., served as a member of the board of directors of the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities and had served on the Chevra Kadisha. He had also been a charter member of the former Mill Creek Country Club, Milan.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Howard Wolfe, Riverwoods, Ill.; sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald and Martha Siegel, Waban, Mass. and Maynard Siegel, Rock Island; grandchildren, Elizabeth Swartz and her husband, Todd, Canton, Mass., Joshua Siegel, New York City, and Gabrielle Liverant and her husband, Baruch, Newton, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Kyra and Jacob Swartz, Canton; and a sister, Rosalyn 'Tybe' Goldstein, San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

Richard Dolleslager
Richard Charles Dolleslager, 74, of Moline, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where further arrangements are pending.

William Tagtmeier
Services for William J. Tagtmeier, 84, of Moline, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. The Rev. Dr. Robert W. Miller, First Congregational Church, Moline, will officiate. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park.

Visitation is 4-6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Bethany Home, United Way, or a favorite charity.

Mr. Tagtmeier died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

William John Tagtmeier was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Glenview, Ill., the son of William R. and Laura Jaacks Tagtmeier. He graduated from Northwestern University. He married Wilmogene Amanda Jones June 7, 1946, in Rock Island. She died June 23, 1988.

Mr. Tagtmeier was employed by Deere and Company for 34 years, first as an accountant and later as comptroller and vice president-comptroller. He retired as vice president of finance in 1978. He previously worked at Autopoint Company and Haskins and Sells, both in Chicago.

He was a director of the former Moline Community Chest, past president of the Quad Cities Chapter of the National Association of Accountants, director and treasurer of Bethany Home, director of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce, and a member of First Congregational Church, Moline, Short Hills Country Club, and Moline Elks Lodge. Following his retirement, he spent winters in San Diego, Calif.

Bill is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Beth Tagtmeier and Steven and Judy Tagtmeier, all of Moline; five grandchildren, Eric Tagtmeier and his wife Amanda, Curt Tagtmeier, John Tagtmeier, Christopher Tagtmeier, and Ellen Tagtmeier; and a sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Melvin Long, McHenry, Ill. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Roy.

Dennis Anderson
Dennis L. Anderson, 65, of Silvis, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Among survivors is his wife, Sharon.

Don DeMarlie
Don E. DeMarlie, 67, of Coal Valley, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, with visitation 1 p.m. to service time. Burial will be in the Coal Valley cemetery . Memorials may be given to the family.

Donald Eugene DeMarlie was born March 12, 1935, in Moline, the son of Camiel and Germaine Van Acker DeMarlie. He married the former Patti 'Pat' Dean Aug. 9, 1955.

Mr. DeMarlie was a meat cutter for 20 years at Valley Packing, and 20 years at Davenport Meat Packing. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR Racing, and working on his '36' Ford.'

His survivors include his wife, Pat; a daughter and son-in-law, Darci and Rob Pettit; a son, Rod DeMarlie, grandchildren, Stephanie and Toney Genova, and Jenny Pettit, and a great-grandson, Dayton Genova, all of Coal Valley; and a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Don Klarkowski, Bradenton, Fla.

Kenneth Larson
Kenneth R. Larson, 61, of Andover, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at his daughter's home in Andover.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Kirk, Huggins and Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion. Burial will be in Western Township cemetery , Orion. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Orion High School Wrestling Organization or Niabi Zoo.

Kenneth was born June 22, 1941, in Moline, the son of Otto and Arlene Benjamin Larson. He married Dora Lindquist June 20, 1964.

Kenneth was a supervisor for John Deere Plow Planter, Moline, for 29 years, retiring in 1992. After retiring he was employed as a bailiff for six years for Henry County Courthouse.

Kenneth was a former Auxilary Police Officer in Henry County for four years. He was a member of the NRA (National Rifle Assoiciation), and former member of the Orion School Board. He served on the board of Augustana Lutheran Church, Andover, during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a former chairman for the Henry County Youth Service Bureau for two years. He was also a charter member of Protecting All Children Together (PACT). He was a coach for Little League Baseball, Andover.

Survivors (and spouses) include his mother and stepfather, Arlene Larson and Keith Evert, Andover; daughter, Michele (Bret) Henderson, Andover; sons, Mark (Sandy) Larson, Lynn Center, John Larson, Springfield, Ill.; his grandchildren; and brother, Paul Randall Larson, Andover. He was preceded in death by father and daughter, Vicki Larson.

Adda Mortenson
Adda Blanche Mortenson, 88, of Woodhull, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Woodhull. The Rev. Burt McGlawn will officiate. Burial will be at the Woodhull cemetery . Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home, Woodhull, where memorials may be left to the AlWood Academic Foundation or Galesburg Seminary Manor Alzheimer's Unit.

The former Adda Blanche Archer was born July 6, 1914, at Boonville, Mo., the daughter of Robert J. and Joda Davis Archer.

She graduated from Woodhull High School in 1932. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Western Illinois University. She also had a music degree from Sherwood School of Music, Chicago, and a business degree from Brown's Business College, Galesburg.

She married Charles L. Mortenson June 2, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa, and they were married 51 years. He died April 9, 1991.

She retired in 1974 from the AlWood School District, teaching 5th or 6th grade for 40 years.

She was a member of the United Church of Woodhull, a former Sunday school teacher and the church organist for 45 years. She often played in local area orchestras and bands and entertained at Seminary Manor, Galesburg. She was an Eastern Star member for many years and was also a member of the P.E.O. Chapter 11, Woodhull.

Survivors include nephew, David Erickson and family, Ventura, Calif.; sister-in-law, Betty Erickson, Ventura; a cousin, George Archer, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and very special friends, Gary and Cynthia Deitch and family, Woodhull.

Joseph `Gene' Russell
Joseph Eugene 'Gene' Russell, 81, of 105 E. Liberty St., Joy, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at his son's home in Glendale, Ariz., following a long illness.

Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Muscatine, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery . Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at the George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine, with a 7 p.m. rosary service. A luncheon will be held following the services Saturday at the Wittich-Lewis Community Room. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Research.

Gene was born Sept. 22, 1921, in Waterville, Iowa, the son of Dave and Mary Frye Russell. He married Alta I. Gollobit April 30, 1941, at St. Mathias Catholic Church, Muscatine.

He farmed in the Bay Island area of New Boston for over 50 years. Mr. Russell was a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church and Eagles Lodge, Muscatine, for 64 years and was active in community services. Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing and had an active life.

Among the survivors are his wife, Alta, Joy; three sons, Michael Russell, Glendale, Joe Russell Jr., Aledo, and Denis Russell, New Boston; three daughters, Gloria Hazelett, Arizona, Vicki Keil, Davenport, and Debbie Ruffie, Mt. Prospect, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Delores Russell. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son and daughter; two brothers; and one sister.

Larry Stout
Larry A. Stout, 45, of Lake Elsenor, Calif., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in Lake Elsenor.

Cremation rites were accorded.

He was born in Moline. He graduated from Rockridge High School and was active in sports, especially wrestling. He served in the Marine Corps for four years. He was an electrician.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela; son, Jason Stout; parents, Ed and Marie Stout, Davenport; and brother, Michael, Davenport.
