Merle Dungan
Merle Otis Dungan, 80, of Rock Island, formerly of Aurora, Ill., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary. 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday with visitiaton one hour prior to sevice time at Healy Chapel in Aurora. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial cemetery , Aurora. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Merle was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Sibley, Iowa, son of Otis Martin and Louise Belle Winslow Dungan. He married Rose Mary Konen June 7, 1942, in Aurora. She preceded him in death Nov. 3, 1999.

Merle was an elevator repairman for 37 years for the Otis Elevator Co., where he was a local representative of the Aurora office. He retired in 1983.

Merle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and was interested in sports and classic cars.

Survivors (and spouses) include his daughter, Dona Dungan, Rock Island; sons, Edward (Linda) Dungan, Springfield, Ohio, Gerald Dungan, Aurora, and Merle D. Dungan, Union, Ill.; grandchildren, Patrick (Charlotte) Dungan, Hamilton, Ohio, and Megan Dungan, Springfield, Ohio; sister, Thelma Rudolph, Aurora; and brother, Dale Dungan, Vallejo, Calif. He was preceeded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Earl Dungan; and sister, Mertie Quarterman.

Laura Frye
Services for Laura P. Frye, 94, of Rock Island, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will be in Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, or to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan.

Mrs. Frye died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

The former Laura Valentine was born July 30, 1908, in Carl Junction, Mo., daughter of Roy and Alvina Roechman Valentine. She married Weston A. Frye Sept. 26, 1929, in Rock Island. He died Nov. 30, 1985.

In years prior to her marriage, Mrs. Frye had worked as an inspector at the former Servus Rubber Co., Rock Island.

She had been a member of Elderland Social Club, Rock Island, where she had been a former resident, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Rock Island. Laura enjoyed crocheting, knitting, fishing, playing cards and bingo.

Survivors include nieces, Barbara Miller, Silvis, and Maureen Brandle, Milan; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Peter De Marlie
Services for Peter J. De Marlie, 86, of Moline, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where a liturgy service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Monsignor Cleary Endowment Fund or for Masses.

Mr. De Marlie died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Mr. DeMarlie was born Sept. 28, 1916, in East Moline, son of Emiel and Clara Menu De Marlie. He married Clara Schaecker June 17, 1939, in Rock Island. She died Feb. 27, 1975. He married Marie Boesch Lackey Oct. 4, 1975, in East Moline.

He retired from John Deere Harvester, East Moline, in 1977. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and playing rolle bolle.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; son, Gary De Marlie, Denver, Colo.; stepsons and daughters-in-law, David and Kate Lackey, Moline, and Dean and Karen Lackey, East Moline; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Clara De Marlie; two sisters; and five brothers.

Valarie Sundeen
Services for Valarie 'Val' J. Sundeen, 68, of Moline, will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Entombment will be in St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline.

Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a rosary at 3 p.m. conducted by the Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society and a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Alleman High School, Rock Island, and American Diabetes Association.

Mrs. Sundeen died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Mrs. Sundeen was born Sept. 8, 1934, in Iowa City, Iowa, daughter of Alvin and Irene Barron Neubauer. She married Frank Herman Dec. 26, 1953, in East Moline. She married Henry 'Hank' A. Sundeen Jr. June 25, 1973, in Rock Island.

She was employed as an X-ray technician in the oncology department at the former Lutheran Hospital and United Medical Center, Moline, for 35 years, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society, the former Sacred Heart Mothers Club, Seton Mothers Club, Alleman Booster Club, Alleman Home and School Association and Alleman Century Club. She also served as a Girl Scout leader at the former Sacred Heart School and as the editor for Seaton School yearbook. She enjoyed crafts and had a great love for her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Henry; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and James Jorgensen, Antioch, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, Henry 'Andy' A. III and Michelle Sundeen, Milan; grandchildren, Jason, Jamie, Matthew and Alyse Jorgensen and Braden N. Sundeen; sister, Carol A . Smith, Moline; and brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Sally Neubauer, Moline. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Holly Marie.

Robert Verstraete
Services for Robert I. Verstraete, 88, of East Moline, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where a liturgy service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the church.

Mr. Verstraete died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis.

Mr. Verstraete was born Sept. 25, 1914, in Aarsele, Belgium, son of Adiel and Irma Beert Verstraete. He married Helene Lambrecht Sept. 5, 1942, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. The Verstraetes had just celebrated their 60th anniversary.

He worked at John Deere Spreader Works and John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed bicycling, gardening and playing cards. He enjoyed family and friends. He especially enjoyed going to McDonald's every day to meet with his friends.

Survivors include his wife, Helene; daughters and son-in-law, Judy and Jim Williams, Geneseo, and Pat Seams, East Moline; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Ronda Verstraete, East Moline; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Valere Verstraete.

Vivian Aten
Vivian Aten, 75, of 305 S. 24th St., Blue Springs, Mo., formerly of Silvis, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Blue Springs.

Services were held Monday. Burial was Tuesday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Shriners Children's Hospital.

Mrs. Aten was born April 24, 1927, in New Orleans, La., daughter of Jeff and Eleanor Bell. She married O.W. 'Corkie' Aten Dec. 31, 1945, in New Orleans, La. They made their home in Silvis for 17 years before moving to Blue Springs.

Vivian was a spirited person loved by all who met her. She had a way of making even a stranger laugh. She and her husband attended First United Methodist Church. While living in the Quad-Cities area, she was a member of the Eastern Star, Silvis. Quilting, sewing and cooking were among her many hobbies. Grandma Vivian 'Fifi' especially enjoyed baking and shopping with her grandchildren.

Survivors (and spouses) include her husband of 57 years, O.W. 'Corkie;' daughters, Georgia (David) Baraks, Coal Valley, Jennifer (John) Hanley, Ontario, Calif., and Marion (Pat) Collison, Bondurant, Iowa; sons, Jeffrey (Patti) Aten and Don (Carolyn) Aten, both of Blue Springs, and Bill (Grace) Aten, Apple Valley, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; three beautiful great-granddaughters; and sister, Rose Wharton. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Cari DeClercq
Cari Ann DeClercq, 26, of Carbon Cliff, formerly of East Moline, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Burial is in Hampton cemetery . Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary. Memorials may be made to the family.

She was born July 9, 1976, in Silvis to Edward and Sheela Sawyer DeClercq.

She was an LPN for Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Cari loved being with her nephew, Chance, and her dog, Oliver. She also enjoyed computers and shopping.

Survivors (and spouse) include her mother, Sheela Sawyer, East Moline; sister, Amy (Mark) Miller, Geneseo; nephew, Chance Miller; niece, Brandi Miller; and grandmother, Elsie Sawyer, Geneseo. She was preceded in death by her father, grandfather, Doyle; grandparents, Alois and Florence DeClercq; and great-grandmother, Dorothy Dopler.

Frank White
Frank White, 86, of Macomb, Ill., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at The Elms Nursing Home, Macomb.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Macomb Assembly of God Church. Burial is in Bushnell, Ill., cemetery . Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, Bushnell, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born April 29, 1916, in Smithfield, Ill., to Charlie and Elizabeth Ackerson White. He married Irene Blagden Feb. 9, 1939, in Fort Madison, Iowa. She died Oct. 11, 2001.

Survivors (and spouses) are his son, Eldon (Kaye), Milan; daughters, Betty (Bob) Steele and Cheryl Morris-Sewell, both of Macomb, and Linda (Robert) Kunz, Moline; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Shirley Brown, Muldraugh, Ky.

Joseph Bish
Services for Joseph M. Bish, 77, of Davenport, are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport, where he was a member. Burial is in Sorden cemetery near Webster and Keswick, Iowa. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. today at Weerts, Davenport.

Mr. Bish died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at his home.

Joseph was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Keosauqua, Iowa, to Joseph C. and Thelma Bloom Bish. He married Patricia M. McCay June 29, 1952, in Keswick.

He was a chemist with the Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., and most recently with the Rock Island Arsenal. He taught at Bettendorf High School and also at Iowa State University, Ames. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia, and many nieces and nephews.

Donald Hebbel

Services for Donald R. Hebbel, 79, of Davenport, are 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, with military rites. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Weerts, Davenport.

He died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at home.

He married Christa Wagoner in 1971.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Douglas, Palo Alto, Calif., and Gary, Essex, Conn.; stepsons, David Wagoner, Kansas City, Mo., and Bruce Wagoner, Bettendorf; stepdaughter, Kathleen Higgins, Davenport; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and siblings, Lois Pritchard and Allen, Davenport.

Louis Larkin
Louis J. Larkin, of Davenport, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

Among survivors is his wife, Lois.

Further arrangements are pending.

Mary Reistroffer
Mary E. Reistroffer, formerly of Davenport, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in Milwaukee, Wis.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery , DeWitt, Iowa. Visitation is 4 to 6:30 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, with a rosary and prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

She was born March 2, 1924, in Davenport to John and Mayme Foley Reistroffer.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Kate Reistroffer, Longview, Wash.; two nephews; two great-nieces.

Rolland Ries
Rolland Ries, 79, of Bettendorf, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, while visiting his daughter in Lansing, Mich.

Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Roy Groenwoldt
Roy I. Groenwoldt, 89, of Rock Island died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his home.

Services will be private. Memorials may be sent to Pathway Hospice, 500 42nd St., Rock Island, IL 61201.

Roy Irwin Groenwoldt Sr. was born March 24, 1913, in Davenport, the son of Henry and Paula Peters Groenwoldt. He married the former Margaret Yates May 1, 1948, in Hopkinsville, Ky.

Mr. Groenwoldt was employed as a bus driver for the Davenport City Bus Line for over 34 years. He enjoyed his retirement gardening and spending time with Margaret, his wife of over 54 years.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; three daughters, Marie, Paula and Sandy; son, Roy Jr.; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
