Elma Timmerman
Elma B. Timmerman, 92, of Rock Island died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery , Moline.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the mission fund at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline.

The former Elma Berniece Parker was born Sept. 17, 1910, in Bowen, Ill., the daughter of William and Lizzie Shirkey Parker. She married Roy M. Timmerman Feb. 19, 1927, in Moline; he preceded her in death Feb. 7, 1961.

Mrs. Timmerman was the night supervisor for the student union at Augustana College, retiring in 1971. She had also owned her own beauty salon, was a real-estate agent, and had been a professional baker at Peter's Bakery.

She was a past member of First Christian Church, Moline. Elma enjoyed cooking and sewing and had many other interests and hobbies.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Thelma and Peter Devlin, Rock Island. She was preceded in death by her son, Gerald Timmerman; a sister, Leona Israelson; and a brother, Leroy Parker.

Ruby Walker
Ruby Walker, 87, Rock Island, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at River Park Health Care Center, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Ray Cornmesser
Ray E. Cornmesser, 86, of Moline died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline.

Anthony `Tony' Sisul

Services for Anthony 'Tony' Sisul, 75, East Moline, are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, where East Moline American Legion Post 227 and VFW Post 2, 056 will conduct military honors.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where a liturgy service will be read at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Monsignor William J. Cleary Endowment Fund.

Mr. Sisul died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at his home.

He was born Oct. 16, 1926, in Centerville, Iowa, the son of David and Margarete Zupitil Sisul. He married Carmalita Cerra in 1949. She died in 1974. He married Leona Stenzel Dec. 28, 1977, in Carlton, Minn.

Tony had worked at Langman Construction through Local 309. He worked as a gardener at the Butterworth Center for 10 years after retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He enjoyed bird watching, animals, travel and sports.

Survivors include his wife, Leona; sons, Dennis, Columbia, Mo., Curt, Davenport, Robert, Rapids City, Scott, East Moline, and Todd, Valley Park, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Mack, Hilo, Hawaii; and a brother, John Sisul, Des Moines, Iowa.

Larry Quick
Larry R. Quick, 55, Silvis, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline.

Robert `Bob' Gunter
Services for Robert Harlan 'Bob' Gunter, 66, of Milan will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park cemetery .

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.

Mr. Gunter died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Bob was born Aug. 2, 1936, in Seymour, Iowa, the son of Robert Edgar and Coy Moorman Gunter. He married Corinne Ensminger Jan. 1, 1958, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

He moved to Moline as a youth, graduating from Moline High School in 1954, where he was a starter on the Sweet 16 Illinois State Tournament boys' basketball team.

Mr. Gunter graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, in 1958, also playing for the men's basketball team and setting several school records.

Mr. Gunter retired from Deere & Co. as a senior technical editor in 1986 after 27 years.

Bob was active in youth sports and activities, coaching several basketball and baseball teams. In 1981 he was a coach on the Milan Babe Ruth League baseball team that won the state championship. He was also a Scout leader for several years. Bob loved fishing, gardening, history, genealogy and photography and, most of all, being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Corinne; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Gunter, Moline, Randel and Cindy Gunter, Madison, Wis., and Roderick and Cassandra Gunter, Moline; grandchildren, Trevor, Ryan, Regan, Garrett and Gavin Gunter; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Jackie Gunter, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gretchen (Gunter) Kipp.

Robert Hirt
Robert Hirt, 78, of Kewanee died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Private family inurnment will be in Niles, Ill., at a later date. There is no visitation.

He was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Chicago to Edward and Josephine Zugehar Hirt. He married Bette Fillebrown Dec. 14, 1979, in Rolling Meadows, Ill.

He worked at Electro-Dynamics, Rolling Meadows, developing timing devices for the government. He retired in 1988.

Survivors include his wife; stepdaughters, Marcia Mummau, Elizabethtown, Pa., Beth Annen, Kewanee, Janice Bruns, Palatine, Ill., and Sharon Myers, Somerset, Pa.; and four stepgrandchildren.

Roy Pankey Sr.
Roy D. Pankey Sr., 72, of Carbon Cliff died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at home.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline. The Rev. Adrian W. Rosa will officiate. Burial is in Hampton cemetery , with military rites by Green Rock-Colona American Legion Post 1233.

Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Grace Bible Missionary Church, East Moline, where he was a member.

He was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Elizabethtown, Ill., the son of Everett and Jewell Vaughn Pankey. He married Margaret DeGraeve Jan. 6, 1954, in Silvis.

He owned and operated the Bait & Tackle Shop, Carbon Cliff, for 44 years. He also worked for International Harvester, East Moline, until 1966.

He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a member of Green Rock-Colona American Legion Post 1233, the National Rifle Association and UAW Local 1304. He belonged to Ducks Unlimited, Geneseo chapter, and was always a loving father and grandfather.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Margaret; children, Roy (Sue) Pankey Jr., Colona, Jay (Debra) Pankey, Carbon Cliff, and Jeri (Michael) Longueville, Mukwonago, Wis.; grandchildren, Ryan Pankey, Brandon Pankey, Nicholas Pankey, Kailyn Longueville, Dwayne Pankey, Jocelyn Schoustra and Nicole Kennedy; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Kennedy, Jaren Schoustra and Emily Schoustra; brother, Donald (Joanne) Pankey, Moline; and sister, Beulah (George) Burdick, East Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Kenneth Pankey; and an infant son.

Shirley Hess
Shirley J. Hess, 65, of Bettendorf peacefully passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at her son's home, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf, where she was a member. Luncheon will be served immediately following the service.

A private graveside service will be held in Augusta, Ill., Wednesday. Memorials may be made to United Cerebral Palsy or the Salvation Army. Hamilton Funeral Home, Augusta, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born April 11, 1937, in Galesburg, the daughter of Aris and Pearl Elkinton Cox. She married Richard L. Hess Oct. 28, 1956, in Little York, Ill. He preceded her in death Feb. 5, 1990.

She had been employed by Norwest Bank, formerly Davenport Bank. Following her retirement, she worked at AAA Travel, Bettendorf. She was a graduate of Little York High School. She was very family oriented and loved by all.

Survivors (and spouses) include her daughters, Brenda (Doug) Epping, Davenport, and Michelle (Dave) Danielsen, Pleasant Valley, Iowa; sons, Scott (Jeana) Hess, Milan, and Todd (Jill) Hess, Coal Valley; grandchildren, Joshua (Toni) Arkless, Jacob Arkless, Jena, Joshua and Jodi Epping, Derek and Curtis Miller, Alexis, Ashley, Amber and Autumn Danielsen, Aris and Max Hess, and Courtney, Amanda and Madison Hess; great-grandchildren, Regan Arkless and Kiona, Chayton, Dylan and Gavin Eppings; sister, Vivian Miller, Galesburg; and brothers, Gene Cox, Quincy, Ill., Art Cox, St. Cloud, Fla., and Ron Cox, Huntsville, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Dorothy, and a brother, Grant.

Arlene Staggs
Arlene Staggs, 89, of Davenport died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Fejervary Healthcare, Davenport.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass, Bettendorf. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today.

She was born July 12, 1913, in Eldridge, Iowa, to Oregon Jay and Sadie Mae Stewart Garlough. She married Keith Staggs in 1931. He died in 1987.

Survivors are daughters, Marcella Husen, Calamus, Iowa, and Kathryn Kipp, New Windsor; 17 grandchildren. 30 great-grandchildren. two great-great-grandchildren and one sister.

Lynne Baker Bock
Lynne A. Baker Bock, 45, of Chicago, formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at her home.

Services are 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m., Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the church.

The former Lynne Baker was born Nov. 19, 1956, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Ronayne 'Red' and LaVonne Brown Baker.

Lynne graduated from Alleman High School, Rock Island, and attended Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. She worked in sales.

Lynne was of Catholic faith.

Survivors include her father, Red Baker, Rock Island; a brother, Ron Baker, St. Cloud, Minn.; nieces, Jessica and Emily Baker; an uncle, Donald Baker, Tazewell, Va.; an aunt, Sondra Spoerre, Sherrill, Iowa; and a number of cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, LaVonne.

Mabel Riley
Mabel Mae Riley, 97, of Downing, Mo., passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Forest Hill Health & Rehabilitation Center, East Moline.

Services were held Friday, Sept. 13, in Downing, Mo. Burial was in Downing City cemetery . Memorials may be made to Dowing City cemetery . Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, handled local arrangements.

Mabel Mae was born June 22, 1905, east of Lancaster, Mo., in Schuyler County, daughter of Henry H. and Flora E. Martin McNary. She was united in marriage to Dewey 'Jack' Bragg. She married William Riley Jan. 7, 1969. He preceded her in death Jan. 10, 1991.

Mabel was a member of Downing Community Christian Church. She owned and operated a restaurant in Downing for many years and later the Dairy Queen for several years.

While Mabel was living with her daughter, Helen, she attended South Park Presbyterian Church in Rock Island and enjoyed the fellowship of the members and staff of the church. She was also very fond of Pastor Doug Ganyo and the fact that he always remembered her.

Survivors (and spouses) are her sons, Calvin (Dixie) McNary, Klamath Falls, Ore., Edward Max (Coleen) Bragg, Keithsburg, and Kenneth (Janice) Bragg, Knoxville, Ill.; daughter, Helen June Beselin, Rock Island; 22 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, William; daughter, Eva Mae Neese; sons-in-law, Frank Neese and Fred Beselin; sister, Hazel Gray; brother, Jim McNary; twin brother, Marvel Lee McNary; and great-grandson, 'Little John' Neese.

Arthur Lawrence
Services for Arthur D. Lawrence, 83, of Moline, are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is in Rose Lawn Memorial Estates, Moline.

Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, Milan.

Mr. Lawrence died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Mr. Lawrence was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Rock Island, son of George and Alma Fischer Lawrence. He married Fay C. Kissell Oct. 12, 1940, in Davenport.

He retired from Rockwell International, Melrose Park, Ill., in 1980 as branch manager of the power-tool division. He was formerly employed at Fairchild Camera and Instrument Inc., Chicago, for 19 years as sales and service manager. Mr. Lawrence was founder and co-owner/operator of Blackhawk Tool & Die, Moline, from 1946 to 1951 and had worked at John Deere Plow Planter Works, Moline, as a tool-and-die maker.

Mr. Lawrence served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Moose and Elks clubs and enjoyed photography and gardening, especially his tomato plants.

Survivors include his wife, Fay; daughter, Patricia Mae Sewell, Sarasota, Fla.; sons and daughters-in-law, Brian D. and Christine Lawrence, West Plains, Mo., and Kurt Arthur and Donna Lawrence, Goessel, Kan.; grandchildren, Karyn, David, Robert, Vicky, Brian Jr., Leia, Abe, Jon, Ryun and Bobby; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judy Diane; brother, Eldon; son-in-law, Gary Sewell; stepsister, Bernadine Hallberg; and stepbrother, Bert Gustafson.
