Martha Wilmerton
Martha Wilmerton, 95, of Coal Valley died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in her home.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley. Burial is in Coal Valley cemetery .

Visitation is 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to the church.

The former Martha Orman was born Oct. 6, 1907, in New York, N.Y., the daughter of Rudolph and Mary Kalnin Orman. She married Bert A. Wilmerton Oct. 3, 1931, in Corona, N.Y. He died Nov. 5, 1974.

Martha was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in Coal Valley Township for many years.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, and the Coal Valley Fire Department Auxiliary for many years. She was active in Republican Party politics and supported her husband, who was Coal Valley supervisor for many years and chairman of the Rock Island County Board.

Martha is survived by her son, Bruce A. Wilmerton, Coal Valley, and sister, Lydia Peterson, Quakertown, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Ronald, in infancy; three brothers, and one sister.

Marjorie Carlson
Marjorie Carlson, 90, of Geneseo died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Hillcrest Home, rural Geneseo.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, Geneseo. The Rev. David Myers will officiate. Burial is in Mizpah cemetery , Geneseo.

Visitation is one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the church or Hillcrest Home Patient Activity Fund. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Geneseo, is handling arrangements.

Marjorie Carlson was born March 11, 1912, in Atkinson Township, Henry County, the daughter of Edward and Delia Johnson Carlson. She was raised and educated in Geneseo.

Marjorie attended Augustana College, the University of Iowa and Bradley University, and received her master's degree from Western Illinois University.

She taught school in rural Geneseo and then was a music-education teacher in the Geneseo school system for many years, retiring in 1974. She taught piano lessons for many years.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Loyal Daughters Sunday-school class. She sang in the church Chancel Choir, served as president of the United Methodist Women, and taught Sunday school for the younger children. Marjorie also served as choir director for First Lutheran Church, Geneseo, for many years, and for the Geneseo Senior Citizens.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, the Spring Creek Grange, the Geneseo Eastern Star and the Retired Teachers Association, and a lifetime PTA member. She was a Red Cross volunteer for many years.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, June Carlson, Geneseo; niece and spouse, Devonne and David DeBrock, Geneseo; and nephew and spouse, Eric and Cathy Carlson, Osco. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Verbena Peterson and Catherine Carlson, and brother, Clifford Carlson.

Kylee Nguyen
Kylee Lynn Nguyen, 12-week-old daughter of Don and Melody Nguyen of Colona, went to be one of the Lord's angels Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, due to the development of respiratory problems.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Joe Kobernat will officiate. Burial is in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo.

Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Myers Chapel, Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Geneseo. Memorials may be made to the family.

Kylee was born Aug. 27, 2002, in Peoria, Ill. She was baptized by Father Bill Knapp in Peoria.

She is survived by her parents; a sister, Kristen, and brother, Kristopher, both at home; maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Pam and Larry Wieneke, Geneseo; paternal grandparents, Du and Hoa Nguyen, Iowa City, Iowa; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, William Murphy.

Ethel Harrington
Ethel Harrington, 81, of Davenport died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services, Davenport.

Services are noon Friday at First Baptist Church, Bettendorf, with visitation from 11 a.m. to service time.

Further arrangements are pending at Orr's Mortuary, Rock Island.

Maybelle Johanssen
Maybelle Johanssen, 93, of De-Witt, Iowa, formerly of Bettendorf, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at DeWitt Community Hospital.

A prayer service is 11:30 a.m. Sunday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass, Bettendorf. Private burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. There is no visitation.

She was born May 26, 1909, in Davenport to Joseph and Christine Zarndt Remer. She married Howard Johannsen in 1959. He died in 1977.

Survivors are her niece, Marilyn Paulsen, DeWitt; nephews, Arthur Remer, Mount Joy, Iowa, and James Remer, Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and two stepgrandsons.

Darwin Leighton

Dr. Darwin H. Leighton, 83, Bettendorf, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Trinity North, Davenport.

As he wished, his body has been donated to Palmer College of Chiropractic, and there are no visitation or services. Weerts, Davenport, handled arrangements.

He was born Sept. 12, 1919, in Hopkins, Mo., to Donald and Bessie Leighton.

He was self-employed as a chiropractor 44 years, retiring in 1990.

He served with the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his special friend, Thelma Allen, Bettendorf; sister, Doris Cartwright, Davenport; several nieces and nephews, and three great-nieces.

Edward `Babe' Nagle

Services for Edward 'Babe' Nagle, 77, Davenport, are 9 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, with a prayer service at 6.

He died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Genesis West.

He married Janet Umphress in 1948. He married Doris Harris in 1976. She died in 1985.

Surviving are children, Sherry Nagle and Randall, both of Davenport, Jane Williams, Iowa City, Thomas, Columbus, Ohio, and Robert, Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Viola `Tudy' White
Viola J. 'Tudy' White, 55, of Davenport died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at her home in Davenport following a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport, where further arrangements are pending.

Nell Althoff
Nell Harshman Althoff, Rock Island, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline.

In accordance with her wishes, her body has been cremated. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Pike County, Ill. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial donations to the Rock Island Public Library or First United Methodist Church, Rock Island.

She was born Nov. 19, 1909, outside of Pittsfield, Ill. She had lived most of her life in Rock Island. She was the daughter of Peter and Josephine Harshman and had one brother, Wilson, all of whom preceded her in death.

She was married Aug. 7, 1930, to Carl Althoff, who died in 1943. At that time, she took her two young daughters and returned to Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., to earn her Bachelor of Science degree. She taught first grade at Audubon School for many, many years. After her retirement she traveled extensively.

Nell was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rock Island, for 55 years. She was an avid bridge player, knitter and voracious reader.

She was a loving mother to her daughters, Suzanne Althoff Collins, Elgin, Ill., and Diane Althoff Love, Naples, Fla., and Lincolnville, Maine. She was a devoted grandmother to Wendy Collins Smith, Liburn, Ga., Christopher Collins, Elgin, Jennifer Collins Frantz, Powell, Ohio, Timothy Love, Boston Mass., and Todd Love, Naples, Fla; and to her seven great-grandchildren.

Virginia Lange
Virginia Ruth Lange, 85, of Coventry Apartments, Rock Island, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

As per her wishes, her body has been cremated. Her family will hold private services at a later date. Memorials may be made to Gilda's Club of the Quad Cities. Arrangements are by Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

She was born Nov. 6, 1917, in Newark, Ohio, the daughter of Ben and Mary Rogers Mellott.

Virginia had worked for 10 years as an LPN at Hinsdale Hospital, and for 17 years as a home health-care provider.

She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church, Moline. Virginia enjoyed country music, the Mantovani Orchestra. She liked pizza and chili. She loved hearing from and writing to old friends, and spending time with her grandkids.

Survivors (and spouses) are her daughters, Ruth Steward, Chandler, Ariz., Carol (Jack) Burns, Clinton, Md., and Judy (Mike) Miner, Wheelersburg, Ohio; son, Thomas (Marlene) McIntyre, Milan; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Donald Larson
Donald C. Larson, 90, of Rock Island, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, following complications from a fall he had in his home.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Inurnment will be in Davenport Memorial Park cemetery . Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

He was born Dec. 20, 1911, in Brownsdale, Minn., the son of Lindon and Bertha Bundy Larson. He was united in marriage to Helen Edens Dec. 16, 1939, in Iowa City, Iowa. She preceded him in death Oct. 5, 1963.

He went to West Branch, Iowa, Schools and attended one year at Coe College.

He was in the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II.

He was employed at International Harvester Co. Farmall, Rock Island.

Survivors include his brother, Alton Jim Larson; one granddaughter; one niece and several nephews; special friend, Anna Lawrence and her children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Bundy; an infant grandson; two brothers; and his parents.

Mary Jane Nelson
Mary Jane Nelson, 75, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at River Park Health Care Center, Rock Island.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Inurnment will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Huntington's Disease Society of America.

Mary Jane was born April 28, 1927, in East Moline, the daughter of John and Mabel Brady Woodworth. She married Robert E. Nelson Oct. 16, 1948, in East Moline. He preceded her in death July 21, 1992.

Mary Jane graduated from St. Anthony's Nursing School, Rock Island. She was employed as a nurse at the former St. Anthony and Franciscan Hospitals, Rock Island. Mary Jane enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. She was a lifetime member of Oakwood Country Club.

Survivors (and spouses) include her daughters, Cathleen (Terryl) Helble, Bettendorf, Colleen Schlake, Monona, Iowa, and Christine (Paul) Anderson, Mound, Minn.; and sons, Robert C. Nelson and Stephen Nelson, both of Rock Island. He was preceded in death by her husband, and a son, David.

Marvin Reed
Marvin R. Reed, 68, Springfield, Ill., formerly Rock Island, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at home.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Vancil Memorial Chapel, Springfield. Burial is in Rosehill cemetery , Petersburg, Ill. Visitation is 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Our Saviors Lutheran Church building fund or First United Methodist Church, Rock Island.

He was born Sept. 6, 1934, in Moline, the son of Clyde L. and Clara N. Devinney Reed. He married Marjorie E. Meeker in 1960, in Rock Island.

He attended Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He was a member of UAW Local 1304. He was the past president and coach of the Rock Island National Little League. He retired from Case International Harvester in 1990 after 38 years of service. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors and (spouses) are wife; daughter, Melinda (Roland) Lucht, Springfield; grandchildren, Stephen and Megan Lucht; brother, George (Lavonne) Reed, Rock Island; sister, Nellie (Fritz) Hufford, Coyne Center; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by a brother, Larry.

Edward Barnes
Edward J. Barnes, 75, of Aledo, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Blessing Hospital, Quincy, Ill.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Aledo, where he was a member. The Rev. John Thieryoung will officiate. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, with military rites conducted by Reynolds American Legion Community Post 1166.

Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, where a 40 & 8 service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. and a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Memorials may be left to the Illinois Veteran's Home or the church.

He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Davenport, a son of Raymond J. and Florence Mallette Barnes. He graduated from the former Reynolds High School and attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport. He married Shirley Mathias on Jan. 12, 1949, in Davenport.

Mr. Barnes was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving 16 years serving on the USS Monssen in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Later, he was self-employed in agriculture and was a former Mercer County Deputy Sheriff.

He was a member and past chef of the Rock Island and Mercer County Voiture 40 & 8 and a member and past post commander of Reynold's American Legion Community Post 1166. His other memberships include Mercer County VFW Post 1571, Mercer County Veteran's Assistance Commission and Mercer County Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Steve Kolb, Melbourne, Fla., Deborah Allmon, Colona, Annette Fisher and Theresa and Jerry Shinners, all of Davenport; sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Debra Barnes, Aledo, Michael and Susan Barnes, Aloha, Ore., and Patrick and Jolee Barnes, Palmyra, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother R. Tom Barnes, Ocoee, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents.
