Lorraine Payton

Memorial services for Lorraine Payton, 87, of Rock Island will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Heights Methodist Church, Rock Island. Private burial will be Monday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church. Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Payton died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

The former Lorraine Martin was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Columbia, Mo., the daughter of Nolan and Mable Mohr Martin. She married Oscar M. Payton July 2, 1938, in Columbia. He died Feb. 8, 1960.

Lorraine had worked as a bookkeeper at Desaulniers Printing and later at Sunshine Camper Sales.

She was a member of Memorial Heights Methodist Church, Rock Island.

Lorraine enjoyed sewing, being a homemaker, and especially her family.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Virginia Payton, Rock Island, and Gary and Sue Payton, Fairfax Station, Va.; granddaughters and their husbands, Julie and James Zarlatanes, Taylor Ridge, Gina and Joe Lawrence, Rock Island, and Courtney and Sonny Callen, Dover, Md.; a great-grandson, Nikolas Zarlatanes; and sisters, Juanita Ballard, Versailles, Mo., and Evelyn Hudnell, Columbia. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lester Martin.

Edna Behrens

Services for Edna E. Behrens, 89, of Moline are 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church, Moline. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park.

Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Memorials may be made to the church.

Mrs. Behrens died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at her home.

The former Edna Elizabeth Pearson was born Jan. 2, 1913, in Vermillion, S.D., the daughter of Victor and Maria Bredenberg Pearson. She graduated from Moline High School, and worked at the Rock Island Arsenal prior to her marriage to William H. Behrens on Oct. 2, 1943, in Moline. He died June 29, 1991.

She was a lifetime member of Bethany Baptist Church, Moline, and a member of King's Daughters. She and her husband enjoyed traveling.

Edna is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Cynthia Behrens, Moline, and Tom R. Behrens, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Scott, Tracy and Corianne Behrens, all of Moline, and Sheila Behrens, Denton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Lyle Jacobs
Lyle H. Jacobs, 74, of Moline died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Unionville (Mo.) cemetery . Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline.

He was born April 20, 1928, in Browning, Mo., the son of Harley and Effie Childers Jacobs. He married Rosie L. Davis May 27, 1955, in Milan. She preceded him in death in 1994.

He was employed as a machinist at International Harvester, East Moline.

He was a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Clifford Martin, Colona; grandchildren and spouse, Jeri Martin, Jennifer and John Layman, and Kelly Martin, all of Colona; great-grandchildren, Rosemarie and John Clifford, Colona; sister-in-law, Lois Kent, Davenport; niece and spouse, Tina and Jeff Delf, Blue Grass, Iowa; nephew, Ty Kent, Davenport; and great-nephews, Ryan and Nick Delf, Blue Grass. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene.

Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather will be sadly missed, but always remembered.

Robert LeBlanc
Robert W. LeBlanc, 69, formerly of Moline, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, after a brief illness, at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas.

His body was donated to science. A memorial Mass was celebrated at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church by the Rev. Bob Dunn on Dec. 5, 2002.

He was born March 16, 1933.

Mr. LeBlanc was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He retired as regional manager of the Royal Neighbors of America in 1988.

He enjoyed his family. All of his grandchildren brought him great joy. He was known as the best husband, father and grandfather in the world and will be missed and loved always.

He is survived by his wife, Penny, Corpus Christi; five children, Steve LeBlanc, Moline, Denise LeBlanc, Scottsdale, Ariz., Melissa Mercer, Naples, Fla., Rochelle Arnold, Waterloo, Iowa, and Kimberly Bartsch, Maple Grove, Minn.; three stepchildren, Cindy Millitin, North Dakota, Jack Coleman, Fairmont, Minn., and Tiffany Coppernel, Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren.

Lyle Monson
Services for Lyle D. Monson, 83, of Moline are 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Congregational Church, Moline. The Rev. Jack Michaelsen will officiate. Burial is in Petrie cemetery , New Windsor.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Memorials may be made to Union Congregational Church or Arrowhead Ranch.

Mr. Monson died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, while walking near his home.

Lyle Delbert Monson was born Aug. 3, 1919, in Henry County, the son of W.B. and Della Monson. He married Audrey Adams March 26, 1946, in Ponca City, Okla. She died Jan. 24, 1989. He married Mercedes O'Brien Anderson on May 5, 1990, in Wheaton, Ill.

He served in the Third Armored Division of the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II.

He was employed by Deere & Co. for 39 years, retiring from manufacturing management at John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, in 1980.

He was a member of Moline American Legion Post 246, Moline VFW Post 2153, Moline Elks Lodge and Moline Viking Lodge, was a former member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and attended Union Congregational Church. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Mercedes; a sister, Doris Heino, Moline;, two nieces and their husbands, Margaret and Ron Morris of Georgia and their family, and Elin Thomas and Mike Cooper of California; a nephew and his wife, Evan and Ann Thomas of Texas, and their family; a stepson and his wife, Terry and Heidi Anderson, Wheaton; and two stepgrandchildren, Lucia and Nicholas Anderson. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Henry Wirth

Henry J. Wirth, 84, of Silvis died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Colona, where he was a member. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis, with a rosary at 6:45.

He was born April 11, 1918, in Waite Park, Minn., to Albert and Margaretha Reihm Wirth. He married Violet Ozasky on Feb. 11, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minn. She preceded him in death in 1973. He then married Mary Pollreisz Stout on Nov. 29, 1973, in Moline.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was the first building engineer for Illini Hospital, Silvis.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Holy Name Society, Silvis Knights of Columbus, Society of Hospital Engineers, and Moline American Legion Post 246.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Mary; daughters, JoAnn Toth, Ely, Nev., Margaret L. (Douglas) Hutton, Fridley, Minn., and Mary Ann (Tom) Prader, Minneapolis, Minn.; stepdaughter, Bonita (Doug) Miller, McPherson, Kan.; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary; brothers, Pete, Matt and Bal; a stepson, Ronald Stout; and a son-in-law, Mikoulaus Toth.

Francis Berry
Francis Berry, 80, of Keithsburg, formerly of Rock Island, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at home.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Keithsburg, with the Rev. Charles Reynolds and the Rev. Frank Mack officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Serenity Hospice or the Rock Island Noon Time Lions Club.

He was born Nov. 30, 1922, in East Dubuque, Ill., a son of Frank and Lillie Lattig Berry. He graduated from Rock Island High School and attended Augustana College in Rock Island. He married Juanita Barnes June 1, 1945, in Keokuk, Iowa.

Francis was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was employed as a surveyor for Byrne Construction Co. in Lockport, Ill. He later owned and operated his own heavy-equipment construction company, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of Rock Island Noon Time Lions Club and South Park Presbyterian Church.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita; twin daughters, Anita and Bonita Berry, both of Waterloo, Iowa; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Wanda Berry, Manchester, Tenn.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Berry, LaFayette, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, William; two infant children, and five sisters.

R. Dale Cass
R. Dale Cass, 86, of Colona died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Colona United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 60 years and a Sunday-school teacher for 50 years. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to services Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. Arrangements are by Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

He was born July 9, 1916, in Barstow to Fred and Nellie Ellickson Cass. He married Dora Kirkpatrick Feb. 2, 1940, in Dallas, Texas.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a machine repairman for Case IH, East Moline, and was a former alderman, city clerk and mayor of Colona. He was a member of Mason 640 for 50 years and was a member of UAW Local 1304.

He loved to garden and fish and loved his family

Survivors (and spouses) are his wife, Dora; sons, Dr. Allan (Betty) Cass, Brownwood, Texas, and Hilton K. Cass, Fairfield, Calif.; grandchildren, Emily and Ryan, Fairfield, Carrie, San Antonio, Texas, and Alice, Austin, Texas; sister, Dorothy (Conrad) Guldenpfennig, East Moline; sister-in-law, Bessie Cass, Glen Ellyn, Ill.; brothers, Glenn, Silvis, and Rex and Donald (Wanda), both of East Moline. He was preceded in death by a brother, George, daughter-in-law, Linda, and sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Marion Cass.

Robert Coughlen
Robert H. Coughlen, 80, Prophetstown, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Geneseo.

Private inurnment is at a later date in Riverside cemetery , Prophetstown. There is no visitation. Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Prophetstown, is handling arrangements.

He was born March 8, 1922, in Norwood, Ohio, to William and Lillian Peelle Coughlen. He married Darlene Church Presnell Jan. 19, 1966. She died in 1990.

Surviving are his daughters, Dallas Lee Gonzales, Athens, Ga., and Rob Ann Tomlinson, Wellesley Hills, Mass.; stepdaughters, Lydia Crady, Prophetstown, and Janet Wright, Morrison; son, Steven Coughlen, Colona; stepson, Robert Presnell, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Denver Goetz
Denver W. Goetz, 77, of rural Geneseo was killed Monday afternoon at his residence after being struck by a car while retrieving the mail.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Edford Township, Geneseo, where he was a member. The Rev. Robert Woods will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Denver Goetz Memorial Fund.

Denver was born on July 18, 1925, in Geneseo, the son of William E. and Mamie Roesner Goetz. He married Lois Jones on Sept. 25, 1945, in Colona.

Denver was a lifetime farmer in rural Geneseo, where he raised purebred Hampshire hogs for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Henry County Farm Bureau and Henry County Pork Producers.

As a young man, Devner was a well known softball pitcher, playing in several area leagues. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved his cat.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; son and spouse, Joel and Susan Goetz, Geneseo; daughter-in-law, Laura Goetz, Geneseo; grandchildren and spouses, Greg and Anita Orwig, East Peoria, Ill., and Jeff and Angie Goetz, Dickson, Tenn.; and great-grandchildren, Courtney, Cody and Chance Orwig. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Goetz, on Oct. 17, 2002, and a sister, Desyl Koch.

Darrel Harrison
Darrel Harrison, 59, of Viola died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

LeRoy Janey
LeRoy Janey, 84, Kewanee, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Kewanee Hospital.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Rux, Kewanee. Burial is in Pleasant View cemetery , Kewanee, with military rites. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

He was born Dec. 22, 1917, in Reidsville, N.C., to William and Roxie Purdy Janey. He married Mary Frances Payne June 15, 1946, in Greensboro, N.C.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Gary and Richard, Kewanee, and Tim, Geneseo; daughters, Donna, Silvis, and Becky Ptashnik, Kewanee; 16 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a brother and a sister.
