Thomas Caffery

Services for Thomas A. 'Tom' Caffery, 56, of Corpus Christi, Texas, formerly of Rock Island, are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport. Burial is in Mount Calvary cemetery , Davenport, with military rites. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.

He died Dec. 4, 2002, at home.

He was born May 9, 1946, in Rock Island. He graduated from Alleman High School and Augustana College. He was a Vietnam War Army veteran.

Surviving are his brothers, Jerry and Dan, both of Moline, Tim, Clinton, Iowa, and Michael, Las Vegas, Nev.; four nephews; and special friend, Linda Burt, Beeville, Texas.

Chesley `Chet' Hengl
Chesley 'Chet' Hengl, 46, of Rock Island, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will follow at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is two hours prior to service time.

Chet was born Dec. 7, 1955, in Pueblo, Colo., son of Richard and Betty Denato Hengl. He married Teresa DePaepe July 3, 1997, in Rock Island.

Chet served in the U.S. Army. He was a superintendent at Hawkeye Paving Co. He was former Mr. Iowa and enjoyed boating and fishing on the Rock River.

Chet is survived by his loving wife, Teresa, Rock Island; daughters, Heather, Heide and Hillary Hengl, all of Davenport; son, Heath Hengl, Davenport; grandchidlren, Raiko Speights, Hanna Lopez and Joseph Heald, all of Davenport; father and stepmother, Richard and Elaine Hengl, Princeton, Iowa; mother, Betty Angerer, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters and brother-in-law, Sally and Randy Swanson, Myrtle Beach, and Cindy and Bobby Cotton, Harrodsberg, Ky.

Chet was deeply loved.

Larry Werner
Larry Werner, 59, of Rock Island, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at his home.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island.

Further arrangements are pending.

Pauline Woods
Pauline A. Woods, 87, of Rock Island, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Rock Island. Burial will follow at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Arrangements are by Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Pauline was born April 17, 1915, in McDonough, Ill., daughter of Samuel and Grace Leftridge McFadden. She married William E. Woods March 23, 1935, in Macomb, Ill. He died June 18, 1997.

Pauline worked as a cafeteria manager at Washington Junior High School, Rock Island, from 1968 to 1970. She then worked as a baker at Augustana College, Rock Island, from 1970 to 1983, retiring in May 1983. Pauline was a member of First Baptist Church, Rock Island, Eastern Star 269 in Rock Island and AARP. She also enjoyed crocheting.

Pauline is survived by daughter and spouse, Gracanne and Dale Vroman, Milan; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Woods, Tucson, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, the Rev. Rex Woods; sisters, Bernice Battin, Hazel Butterfield and Lulu Downey; and brothers, Clarence and Elmer McFadden.

Thomas Lear
Thomas Lowell Lear, 61, of St. Louis, Mo., passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2002.

Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kutis Funeral Home, South County Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, MO 63129. Burial is in National cemetery , St. Louis. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, St. Louis.

He was born Aug. 12, 1941, in Moline, son of Glenn and Lorraine Schuler Lear.

Mr. Lear was in sales for a medical supply company and served in the Marine Corps. His humor, kindness, generosity and love will be missed.

Thomas was the beloved best friend and companion to Joyce T. Erb; dear ex-husband of Karen K. Kowal; beloved father to Michelle L. Lear, Theresa L. Lear, Chad L. Lear, Joseph L. Lear and Nicole L. McClain (Lear); beloved father-in-law to Jill Lear, Tracey Lear and Alan McClain; dear friend to Greg and Kaye Erb, Paul and Carrie Roider and Julie and Steve Caputa; beloved grandfather to Zachary, Savannah, Samuel, Amanda, Justin, Kristin, Nicholas, Ashley, Autumn, Jacob, Jordan, Abigail, Josie, Sophia, Kaitlin, Sarah, Laura, Heather, Maria, Melissa, Elizabeth and Dominic; brother to Sylvia Davis; and uncle to Brad Davis and Shelly York. Many friends also will miss him.

Virginia Hill Ross

Services for Virginia Hill Ross, 87, of Moline, are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. The Rev. Dr. Robert W. Miller will officiate. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Visitation is one hour before the services. The family also will greet friends at a reception at Paulsen Manor following the burial. Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, Moline.

Mrs. Ross died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

A lifelong resident of Moline, the former Virginia Hill was born Nov. 26, 1915, in Moline, daughter of Charles M. and Ida Abraham Hill. Both of her parents were descended from pioneer Moline families. She married Charles W. L. Ross Feb. 1, 1945, in Moline. He died June 14, 1994. She and her husband owned AMACO Magnetics Inc., Moline, where she was office manager.

Virginia was a member of First Congregational Church, Moline, and Floral-Service Guild of the church, Elizabeth Jane Brashears Circle of King's Daughters, Chapter BL of PEO Sisterhood, Augustana Endowment Society, Rock Island County Republican Women, the former Moline Public Hospital Auxiliary and Moline Junior Service League. Because of her pioneer heritage, she was active in the Rock Island County Historical Society, served on its board for several years and was the first president of its auxiliary. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed rose gardening.

Virginia is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ted and Susan Ross, Seattle, Wash., and Craig Ross, Moline; and three grandchildren, Hannah and Laura Ross, Moline, and Ian Phares and his wife, Catherine, Seattle. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a sister.

Margaret Young
Services for Margaret M. Young, 96, of Moline, are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. The Rev. Jan Griffith will officiate. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park.

Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline, or the Illinois Heart Association.

Mrs. Young died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Trinity Medical Canter, Rock Island.

The former Margaret Martha Angeline Miller was born Dec. 5, 1906, in Fulton County, Ill., daughter of Charles and F. and Anna V. Henderson Miller. She married David C. Young March 9, 1927, in Moline. He died April 23, 1975. She was bookkeeper at Iowa Roofing Co. for several years.

She was a longtime member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline, where she was active on many boards and committees; a member of Short Hills Country Club, East Moline; and an honorary member of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed needlework and yardwork.

Margaret is survived by a nephew and his wife, Jack and Ruth Walker, Canton, Ill., a great-niece, Shelly Henderson, Overland Park, Kan.; a great-nephew, Mitchell Walker, Marshalltown, Iowa; two great-great-nieces; and two great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Lucille Durward
Lucille M. Durward, 82, a resident of Resthave Nursing Home, Morrison, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at the nursing home.

Arrangements are pending at the Morrison Chapel of Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.

Vera Eads
Memorial services for Vera Suddarth Eads, 81, of Prophetstown, are 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at Prophetstown United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Arrangements are by Gibson and Son Funeral Home, Prophetstown.

She died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at her home.

She was born April 10, 1921, in rural Prophetstown to Ernest and Ida Meier. She married Sherman Suddarth in 1945. He died in 1953. She married Clarence Eads in 1978. He died in 1984.

She is survived by her son, Galen Suddarth, and stepson, Terry Eads, both of Prophetstown; stepdaughter, Sharon LaHood, Florida; four stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rosie Meier, Prophetstown. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Meier.

Earl Evans
Earl Evans, 86, of Prophetstown, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center, Prophetstown.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore. Burial is in Rosedale cemetery , Cambridge. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

He was born Aug. 2, 1916, in Stronghurst, Ill., to Daniel and Clara Evans. He married Laura Willett in 1935. She died in 1985.

Surviving are his daughter, Beverly DeMay, Prophetstown; son, Dan, Cambridge; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Perry Evans, Geneseo.

Mildred Kadel
Mildred Kadel, 87, of Taylor Ridge, passed and went to be with her Lord on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will follow at Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with an Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Andalusia Community Baptist Church.

Mildred was born Dec. 25, 1914, on a farm near Taylor Ridge, daughter of Albert and Nellie Carlson Blaser. She married Raymond Kadel April 4, 1934, in Rock Island. He died July 4, 1987.

Mildred was a farm wife and homemaker. She loved to raise and tend to her chickens. She attended Andalusia Community Baptist Church and was a member of the Jolly 60s, a 50-year member of O.E.S. 617 in Andalusia and a member of the Rock Island County Farm Bureau.

Mildred loved to bake pies and chicken and noodles and then to take them to those in need.

She is survived by daughters (and spouses) Lavona (Jack) Crawford, Taylor Ridge, Darlene Swift and her fiance, Wayne Baker, Taylor Ridge; grandchildren, Donald Crawford, Taylor Ridge, Randy Crawford, Sherrard, Shane Swift, Bettendorf, and Wendy Sue Swift, Andalusia; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Tabitha and Morgan Crawford; and special friend, Thelma Payne, Aledo. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Ruth Bingman; and brother, Glen Blaser.

Donald Miller
Donald G. Miller, 64, of Mineral, Ill., was killed Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in rural Sheffield, Ill., in an accident while cutting down a tree.

Arrangements are pending at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson.

Russell Chapman
Russell L. Chapman, 65, of Davenport, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at his home.

Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass, Bettendorf. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

He was born Nov. 7, 1937, in Davenport to Russell and Ruth Ann Chapman. He married Eleanor Butts in 1960.

Surviving are his wife; daughters, Cheryl Chapman, Silvis, and Shirley Dailey, Davenport; son, Doug, Davenport; five grandchildren; brothers, Raymond, Richard and Robert, all of Davenport; and a sister.

Grace DeGeeter
Grace E. DeGeeter, 91, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Vincent Gomez
Private memorial services for Vincent Gomez, 73, of Davenport and Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Franklin Park, Ill., will be Dec. 14, 2002, at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

Private burial services will take place in Davenport Memorial Park. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to VNA Hospice.

Mr. Gomez died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Manor Care Health Services, Davenport.

He was born April 5, 1929, in Chicago, son of Louis and Lucille Aguirre Gomez. He married Dorothy Mary Zoska April 16, 1966. in Chicago. She preceded him in death Nov. 21, 2001.

He was employed at U.S. Steel Co., Melrose Park, Ill., for 18 years and then at Illinois Crate Co., Franklin Park, Ill., before retirement. He was a union steward for U.S. Steel and a former member of LULAC.

Survivors include a sister, Lucy Juarez, Davenport; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Gomez, Evanston, Ill.; four nephews; three nieces; and several cousins from Chicago. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, three brothers and three sisters.

Donald Pahl
Services for Donald Pahl, 71, of Walcott, Iowa, are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.

Mr. Pahl died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at home.

He was born Oct. 13, 1931, in Dixon, Iowa, to Wilbert and Norma Rathjen Pahl. He married Gayle Boyd Feb. 26, 1972, in Rock Island. He worked for Schebler's for 38 years, retiring in 1995.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Michael, Atalissa, Iowa, and Vic, Muscatine, Iowa; daughter, Yvonne Serge, Florida; one grandson; and a brother, Richard, Wilton, Iowa.
