Elfrieda `Tootie' Estes
Elfrieda 'Tootie' Estes, 85, of Kewanee, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Kewanee Care Nursing Home.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran, Kewanee. Burial is in Pleasant View cemetery , Kewanee, with military rites by Kewanee Veterans Council.

Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Kewanee.

She was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Kewanee, to Henry and Minnie Friedrich Heideman. She married Lewis Estes June 21, 1952, in Battle Creek, Mich. He died July 8, 1996.

Survivors are sons, Paul, Kewanee, and Joel, Knoxville; and four grandsons. She was preceded by sister, Eloise Heinrich; and brothers, Lawrence, Leslie, Elmer and Harold Heideman.

James Feldman
James R. Feldman, 77, of Aledo, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at home.

Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, with the Rev. Christine Stewart Bailey of Norwood United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Aledo cemetery . Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home, where memorials may be left to the Norwood United Presbyterian Church.

He was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Drury Township, a son of Elmer and Alice Gillett Feldman. He graduated from Reynolds High School and married Anna Marie Bieri Oct. 21, 1945, in Muscatine. She died in 1999.

Jim farmed all his life in the Norwood and Seaton areas until retiring in 1994.

He was a member, trustee and elder of the Norwood United Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Mercer County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing cards, collecting knives and being with his friends and family.

Survivors include two daughters, Jody Thorp and Steve Price, Aledo, Jill Feldman and Dale Huber, Springfield, Ill.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Dean and Karma Feldman, North Barrington, Ill.; three grandchildren, Jason and Darcy Thorp, Roscoe, Ill., Alex and Jenna Feldman, North Barrington; two great-grandchildren, James and Katie Thorp, Roscoe; and a sister-in-law, Kay Winegard, Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Pearl Halligan
Pearl Halligan, 87, of Geneseo, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo, surrounded by her loving children.

Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Geneseo Evangelical Free Church, with Pastor Richard E. Cryder officiating. Burial is in Hampton Township cemetery . Visitation is 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the church or Hillcrest Home, Geneseo.

She was born Dec. 29, 1915, in Elk Port Township, Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Ira Charles and Julia L. Spore Hinkle. She married George W. Halligan May 19, 1934, in Duncomb, Iowa. He died in December 1965.

She was an assembler at General Electric, Morrison, for 18 years, retiring in 1975.

She was a member of Geneseo Evangelical Free Church.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed arts and crafts. She rode her bicycle up to 70 years of age and also enjoyed boating, camping and traveling.

Survivors (and spouses) include her daughters, Marilyn (Richard) Griffin, Port Byron, Colleen (William) DeSpain, Geneseo, Sharon (Earl) Thompson, Hillsdale, Deanna (Ross) Burlingame, Silvis, Judith (Wesley) Naftzger, Albany, Ill., Carol Halligan and husband, Bill Leggett, Iowa City, Rebecca (Clyde) Porter, Mexico, and Kathleen (Joseph) Saylor, Bremmen, Ind.; sons, Joseph (Diane) Halligan, Hillsdale, and Jeffrey (Pam) Halligan, Geneseo; 32 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Delores Thrasher, Waterloo, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; son, Charles in 1989; and infant daughter, Nancy Mary.

Dorothy Slentz
Dorothy M. Slentz, 82, of Sherrard, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Manor Care Health Services, Davenport.

Arrangements pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Roberta Thompson
Roberta J. Hedeen Thompson, 76, of Carbon Cliff, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday. A memorial fund has been established.

The former Roberta June Lindshield was born June 4, 1926, in Moline, the daughter of Robert and Hazel Ryan Lindshield. She married Paul Hedeen Aug. 21, 1943, in Port Byron. He died March 11, 1980. She then married Robert Thompson April 4, 1981, in Port Byron.

She was employed for many years as a Surgical Technician at the former Moline Lutheran and St. Luke's Hospitals.

Roberta was a member of the Moline Gospel Temple. She enjoyed being a mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law, LeeEtta and Dennis Blondell, Geneseo, and Colleen and Cecil Cady, Bettendorf; a son, Charles Hedeen, Port Byron; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert; a sister, Anna Mae Duhn; and a great-grandson.

Maridell Besch
Maridell Besch, 59, of Davenport, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Genesis Medical Center West Campus, Davenport.

Funeral services will be 6 p.m. Saturday at The Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Genesis West Cancer Resource Center.

She was born June 10, 1943, in Moline, to Hazel and J. Walter Johnson. Maridell graduated from Cambridge High School in 1961. She attended and graduated from the American Institute of Commerce. Maridell Johnson was united in marriage to Ronald B. Besch Dec. 24, 1982, in Bettendorf.

She was employed as a logistics coordinator for Deere & Co. World Wide Headquarters, Moline, for 26 years prior to her retirement Dec. 31, 2002.

She enjoyed crocheting and vacationing in northern Wisconsin (Hayward area). She also enjoyed fishing, boating, golfing and most importantly, life itself. She adored animals, especially her dogs.

Survivors include her loving husband, Ronald; sons, daughter and spouses, Edward and Darla Cauwels, Cambridge, Lorna and Mike Miley, Litchfield Park, Ariz., and Mark and Diane Cauwels, Grapevine, Texas; grandchildren, Raiff E. Cauwels, Riley D. Cauwels, Blake A. Miley, Craig A. Miley, Todd A. Miley, Scott A. Miley, McKenzie T. Cauwels, Dylan M. Cauwels; brother, James Johnson, Las Vegas, Nev.; half-brother, Richard Wiquist, Lathrup Village, Mich.; half-sister, Norlaine Verschoore, Geneseo. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, and twin daughters, Lorraine A. and Lorena M. Cauwels.

Woodrow Morrow
Woodrow W. 'Woody' Morrow, 87, of Ottumwa, Iowa, formerly of Centerville, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home, Ottumwa. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery , with military rites accorded. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Center.

He was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Lancaster, Mo., to Martin and Anna Barnhouse Morrow. He married Maxine Marvin July 20, 1940. She preceded him in death May 31, 1996.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II at Normandy.

He was a member of the Church of Christ, Centerville.

Surviving are his daughters, Roselee Wages, Moline, and Eleanor Shinn, Davenport; sons, Richard and Jerry Morrow, both of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Danny Morrow, Moline; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and brother, James Morrow, Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Victoria Hull; and two grandchildren.

Dolores Troutner
Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Dolores E. Troutner, 81, a resident of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Private family burial will be Monday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation will be today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. There will be an additional visitation Saturday at the funeral home from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. The family invites you to join them to recite the rosary at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the family, which will be forwarded to Father Hattie, a Jesuit Missionary, in Africa.

Dolores died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Kahl Home in Davenport.

Dolores Eileen Tofanelli was born May 15, 1921, in Davenport, a daughter of Daniele and Anna Ballarini Tofanelli. She married Robert L. Troutner in Davenport in 1949. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1991.

She graduated from the former Immaculate Conception Academy. Mrs. Troutner was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Danny Miller, Geneseo; a sister, Marie Kurtz, Davenport; brothers, Frank Tofanelli, West Dundee, Ill., Ralph Tofanelli, Des Moines, Iowa, and Kenneth Tofanelli, East Peoria, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Paul and Albert Tofanelli. May they rest in peace.

Dustin Vens
Dustin W. Vens, 16, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Services are 11:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending.

Lila Buehrle
Lila Ruth Buehrle, 70, of Moline, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services are 7 p.m. today at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

She was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Nemacolin, Pa., daughter of George and Lila Jeffery Dean.

She retired from the Corps of Engineers after 19 years. Prior to that, she worked at the Rock Island Post Office.

Survivors include daughter, Cheryl Buehrle, Coralville, Iowa; sons, Bruce Elvidge, Gregg Elvidge and Sean Buehrle, all of Moline; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Sally Carbis, Rock Island; and a brother, Jack Dean, Moline. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, three sisters, seven brothers and her very dear friend, Thomas J. Rielly.

Rubin Garmon
Rubin M. Garmon, 79, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Moline, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at his daughter's home in Las Vegas.

Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Family Home Hospice.

Mr. Garmon was born Sept. 10, 1923, in Beaumont, Ky., son of Rubin and Beira Meredith Garmon. He married Delores Marie Neels June 6, 1951, in Rock Island. She preceded him in death Dec. 5, 1993.

He was a union-based carpenter in Las Vegas for 25 years, retiring in 1974.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Charlie Garmon-DeJonge, Pamela and Ken DuPont and Cheryl Garmon, all of Las Vegas; sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Marge Elliott, San Angelo, Texas, Michael and Sarah Elliott, Rock Island, and Arlie Garmon and Timothy and Roberta Garmon, all of Las Vegas; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Christine Doyle, Buckley, Ill.; and brothers, Dee Garmon, Rockford, Ill., and Lloyd Garmon, East Moline.

Catherine Michalski
Services for Catherine M. 'Kate' Michalski, 99, of Moline, will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline, where she was a member. Burial is in St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where a rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alleman High School Memorial Fund.

Catherine died Monday, March 31, 2003, at her home and left us to be with the Lord and her family.

The former Catherine M. Jurewicz was born Oct. 24, 1903, in Chicago, daughter of John and Mary Bocian Jurewicz. She married John Michalski May 12, 1919, in Chicago. He preceded her in death May 5, 1964.

Catherine was the only living charter member of the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Moline, and had been a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a former member of the Altar and Rosary Society at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline.

Survivors include her daughters, Rosalie A. Michalski, Moline, with whom she resided, and Virginia Lievens, Rockledge, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, John L. 'Jack' LTC (Ret.) and Mary Kay Michalski, Moline; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Vicki Jurewicz, with whom she had lived; and sister-in-law, Christine Jurewicz, East Moline. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; daughter, Evelyn; son, Raymond; four sisters; and seven brothers, among whom was Harry Jurewicz.

Martin Perrine
Martin L. Perrine, 87, of Moline, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Aspenwood Health Care Center, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Florence Richey
Florence D. Richey, 96, of Moline, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis.

There will be no services. Florence's body will be cremated, according to her wishes. Memorials may be made to the Robert Young Center, Rock Island. Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline, is handling arrangements.

Florence was born Sept. 8, 1906, in Searstown (Rock Island), Ill., daughter of George N. and Daisy P. Pate Campbell. She married Herbert Joseph Hartkop Aug. 11, 1928. Florence later married James G. Richey Sept. 8, 1944. He preceded her in death in 1965.

Survivors (and spouses) include her son, Don (Mary Jane) Hartkop, Moline; grandchildren, Herb (Tina) Black, Rock Island, Candace (Dave) Daker, Lombard, Ill., and James Hartkop, LeCanto, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Luke Black, Adham H. Black, Cody Black and Jennelle Black; brother, Eugene Roy (Dorothy) Campbell, San Bernadino, Calif.; nieces, Jacqueline Palmisano, California, Mary (Keth) Sapp, Indiana, and Alana Makowski, Peoria, Ill.; and nephew, Armond Campbell, California. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Campbell; and brother, William Russell Campbell.

Beverly Searle
Beverly Joyce Searle, 72, of Moline, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Private family services will be held. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Quad-Cities Animal Welfare, Milan. Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Dec. 13, 1930, in Moline, daughter of Leonard and Ada Krantz Olson.

She graduated from Moline High School and attended Augustana College. She was a receptionist in medical records for 30 years, beginning with the former Lutheran Hospital in 1964 and retiring from Trinity Medical Center in 1994.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Moline. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and feeding birds.

Survivors (and spouse) include daughters, Lisa Searle, Moline, and Sandra (Mark) Earhart, Port Byron; grandchildren, Timothy and William Price, Port Byron, and Barnabas Stoneburg, Hampton; cousins, Helen (Don) Karr, Rock Island, Betty (Paul) Cornell, Collegeville, Pa., Janice Averill, DeKalb, Ill., Donna Elson, Percy, Ill., Sharon Kush, Joan Graves and Janet Finley, Florida, and Carleen Pretre, Colorado; family friend, Leslie Holmstrom, Bettendorf; and special friends at Jerry's Market and Scott's Uptown Drug. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson.
