Alvin E. 'Little Earl' Blaylock Jr., 36, of Silvis, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitaion is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Further arrangements are pending.

Gene Russ
Gene W. Russ, 60, of Silvis, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

Betty Beam
Betty J. Beam, of Milan, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on Monday, June 16, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Services will be at Betty's home, located at 526 127th Ave., Milan, at 10 a.m. Friday. Interment will be at Preemption cemetery . Memorials may be made to the family, which will select a charitable organization.

Betty was born March 27, 1927, in Milan to Clarence and Annabelle Ihrig Bennett. As a lifelong resident of Castle Junction, Betty married James Beam on June 3, 1944, in Rock Island.

Betty was employed with Sterling School of Cosmetology as a cosmetology instructor for many years. She and her husband bought their own beauty school in Elgin, Ill., which they owned and operated until 1971, when they returned to Milan.

Betty and Jim were both members of the Milan American Legion, where they did a great deal of volunteer work and were celebrated for their chicken and noodle dinners. Betty treasured spending time with her family and grandchildren and was always ready to lead the group out 'mushroomin' or to pick strawberries. Betty also took pleasure in quilting and sewing and was an avid gardener who would frequently welcome visitors into her gardens to enjoy the exquisite blooms.

Betty is survived by daughters (and spouses) Nancy Turner, Linda (David) Dutton and Debra (Terry) Swain, all of Milan; and her son, James C. 'J.C.' (Linda) Beam, Taylor Ridge. She is also survived and will remain forever adored by her grandchildren Matt, Jason and Chuck Dean, Jennifer (Dutton) Dormire, Andrew Dutton, Sara Turner Shepley, John Turner and Heather, Jamie and Mike Beam; as well as four great-grandchildren. Betty is also survived by her brother, Clarence Bennett Jr., Milan.

Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, James, with whom she will spend all of her tomorrows cooking, baking and fishing, as well as by her parents and brothers, James and Larry Bennett.

Harold McGown
Harold E. McGown, 76, of Aledo, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Trinity West, Rock Island.

Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Aledo. There is no visitation. Arrangements are by Dennison, Aledo. He married Barbara Sloan in 1955. She died in 2001.

Survivors are daughters, Lori Terronez, Silvis, Carol Wannenmacher, Mattoon, Ill.; sons, Clay and Jesse McGown, both Aledo; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; sisters, Pat McGown, Kansas City, Mo., Annie Liebe, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and brother, Mike McGown, Marceline, Mo.

Doreen Wetterhall
A memorial service for Doreen A. 'Dee' Wetterhall, 79, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Swedish Mizpah cemetery , Geneseo. Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Friends of the University of South Carolina School of Music or the Humane Society of the U.S.

Mrs. Wetterhall, widow of Roy C. Wetterhall, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of the late Dr. A. Gordon and Adeline Knox Armstrong. She was a 1945 graduate of the University of Michigan and retired as a medical technologist from the practice of Dr. Robert A. Fuhrman in Westfield, N.J.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Jim Thomas, Columbia; her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Scott F. and Deborah Wetterhall, Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughters, Meghan and Madeline Wetterhall; sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Alex McDonald, Naples, Fla.; sister-in-law Ruth W. Remias, Hot Springs, Ark.; and beloved friend Dr. Donald Shombert, Berkeley Heights, N.J.

Cleo Canaday
Services for Cleo D. Canaday, 87, of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport, located next to Pine Hill cemetery and Davenport Memorial Park. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary. Memorials may go to the Gala Nursing Scholarship Fund within the Genesis Health Services Foundation, 1227 E. Rusholme, Davenport, IA 52803. This memorial is in appreciation for the loving care Cleo received at Genesis East's 4th floor Medical Unit.

Cleo died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport, following a stroke.

Cleo D. Canaday was born June 30, 1915, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, son of William Henry and Grace Laurinda Cook Canaday.

Cleo's career in the grocery buiness began in the 1940s, and he last owned a Jack and Jill Store in Durant, Iowa, during the 1960s.

He loved hunting, fishing and playing cards in his later years. He and his wife, Ethel, greatly enjoyed their card-club friends and missed seeing them in recent months due to heath concerns.

Cleo often spoke warmly of the wonderful friends he made in the Durant/Walcott area before retiring to Davenport in 1970. He established 28 years of fond fishing memories with his fishing buddy, Vince Motto, of Blue Grass.

His family will so miss this loving husband and father.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Ethel; sons, Ron and his wife Therese, Des Moines, and Greg, Davenport; grandchildren, Heather, Christopher and Felicia; three great-grandchildren; and a beloved friend of 70 years, Gene Morrison, Moline. He was preceded in death by his brother, Duane, and sisters, Vera and Gwendolyn.

Jack Dalzell
Jack Gordon Dalzell, 87, of Davenport, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his home.

Private family memorial service will be held in Lancaster, Pa. Memorials may be made to VNA Hospice Program or a favorite charity. Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements.

Jack was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Davenport. He served in the U.S. Army 249th Combat Engineers during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; daughter, Susan Hartsock, Lancaster; son, James, Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Gregory Huffman
Gregory Eugene Huffman, 23, of Long Grove, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Arrangements are pending at Runge Mortuary, Davenport.

Patrick Lanphere
Patrick William 'Pat' Lanphere, 19, of Davenport, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home.

A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic, Davenport. Interment will he in Mount Calvary cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cunnick-Collins, Davenport.

He was born June 1, 1984, to James and Jennifer Lanphere.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Margaret 'Maggie' Lanphere, at home; grandmother, Helen E. Lanphere, Marshalltown, Iowa; stepgrandmother, Rita Olsen, Davenport; 26 cousins; and aunts and uncles.

Robert Lobdell
Robert D. Lobdell, 58, of South Whitley, Ind., formerly of Davenport, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Arrangements are pending at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

George Sabbe
George C. Sabbe, 82, of Rock Island, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at River Park Health Care Center.

Services are noon Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church with burial in Calvary cemetery , both in Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., and one hour before services at the church. Memorials my be made to the church.

Mr. Sabbe was born Aug. 30, 1920, in De Panne, Belgium, to Henry and Yvonne Taghon Sabbe. The family came to Rock Island in 1921. George served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he married Helen DeCleene July 17, 1948, in Rock Island.

He worked for IDS, retiring in 1969. After his retirement he was the sheriff of Lake Warren in Monmouth, Ill. George was a member of St. Pius X Church and V.F.W. Post 1303 in Rock Island. He loved auto racing and enjoyed woodworking. George was loved by many family and friends.

George is survived by his wife, Helen, Rock Island; two brothers; Alfred A. Sabbe, Rock Island, and Richard H. Sabbe, Moline; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Rene Sabbe in 1980.

Janet Lehan-Solis
Janet S. Lehan-Solis, 58, of Rock Island, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial will be in Coal Valley Township cemetery . Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Mayo Foundation for Amyloidosis Research.

Janet was born Feb. 27, 1945, in Davenport, the daughter of Edward and Gertrude Taylor Lehan. Jan attended the Villa de Chantal school and graduated from Alleman High School in 1963. She married Dr. John T. Solis in Rock Island.

Janet worked as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit at Trinity Medical Center for 18 years, retiring in 2001.

Jan was a loving and caring mother, daughter and grandmother and friend. She was a dedicated health-care professional.

Jan loved thunderstorms and bird watching. She especially loved her fishing trips to Wisconsin to enjoy the outdoors and to listen for the loons on the lake.

Survivors include her mother, Gertrude, daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Paul DeWitt, all of Rock Island; sons and a daughter-in-law, Tim and Michelle Solis, Eldridge, Dr. Kevin Solis, Bettendorf, and Jason Solis, Bloomington, Ill.; grandchildren, Brandon, Alex, Caitlin, Haley, Tyler, Madison and Grant; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Karen Lehan, Sherrard; niece, Mary Beth Lehan-Wiederin; great-nieces, Erika Bradarich, Allison and Hannah Wiederin; special loving friends, Dr. John T. and Deb Youngren Solis. She was preceded in death by her father and an aunt, Marie Lehan.

Lois Spickler
Services for Lois M. Spickler, 87, of Rock Island, are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, officiated by Richard Davis, Vernon Spinner and Anita Forsberg. Burial is in Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline, of Alzheimer's Disease.

She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Juanita, Foster County, N.D., to Fred John and Estella M. Williams Spickler.

Lois attended Rock Island public schools, graduating from Rock Island High School with the class of 1934.

There has been a weekly Bible Study in the Spickler home for 50 years. Lois started and operated the Spickler Accounting Service, Rock Island, from 1946 until retiring in 1990.

Surviving are her twin sister, Lillian E. Spickler, and aunt, Dorothy Williams, both of Rock Island; several cousins; and friends, Ruby Stearns and Jeanette and Alan Hagen, all of Rock Island. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Marjorie Spickler, in 1936.

Chance Straw-Lucas
Chance M. Straw-Lucas, infant son of Sara Lucas and Jessica Straw, of Rock Island, died shortly after birth Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Thomas Thompson
Thomas C. Thompson, 72, of Rock Island, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Frances Hast
Frances R. Hast, 81, of Moline, formerly of Silvis, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Services are private. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Estates, Moline. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's or a favorite charity.

She was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Francis and Hazel Larson Shaffner. She married George 'Dick' Hast July 1, 1939, in Davenport.

She was a housewife. She was a noble grand at the Rebecca's Lodge, Silvis.

Survivors (and spouses) include her husband, George 'Dick;' sons, Jeff (Connie) Hast, New Windsor, Lou (Mary) Hast, East Moline, and Roger Hast, Rome, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Brian, and a sister.

Carol Lingafelter
Carol N. Lingafelter, 66, of Flora, Ill., died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at her home.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Cisne (Ill.) United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The Rev. John Cross will officiate. Burial is in Jacobs Chapel cemetery , Orchardville, Ill. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the church or Hospice of Southeastern Illinois and envelopes will be available at Hosselton Funeral Home, Cisne, and at the church.

She was born May 27, 1937, in Orchardville, the daughter of Dale and Novella Lee Leathers. She married Richard Lingafelter Dec. 1, 1956, in St. Charles, Ill. He died Jan. 19, 1998.

She was a retired scale operator for Moline Consumers Sand & Gravel (Riverstone). She also worked at Flora (Ill.) Healthcare Center.

Survivors (and spouses) include her daughter, Mary (Randy) Redenbo, Cisne; son, Leslie (Carrie) Lingafelter, East Moline; grandchildren, Marjorie (Steve) Jordan, Rinard, Ill., Melissa VanNorman, Flora, and Blake Lingafelter, East Moline; and two great-grandchildren, Nicole and Melanie Jordan, Rinard. She was preceded in death by her parents.
