Darwin Stephens
Darwin K. Stephens, 70, of Coal Valley, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, with the Rev. Tim Snart officiating. Burial is in Rosedale cemetery , Cambridge. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to the church.

Darwin Keith Stephens was born March 24, 1933, in Cambridge, the son of Denzel Arthur and Myrtle Loretta Garrison Stephens. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1951 and received a certificate in electronics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1951 to 1956, and helped build the Naval Base on Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. He married Joyce Doye on May 14, 1954, in Cable, Ill.

He was an insurance agent for Allstate Insurance for 25 years, retiring in 1991. He previously worked for National Life and Accident Insurance Co. for 10 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, and enjoyed computers, electrical and woodworking, and Iowa Hawkeye basketball.

Darwin is survived by his wife, Joyce; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dave Belville, Silvis; two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Stephens, Covina, Calif., and James and Eilene Stephens, Rock Island; a daughter-in-law, Janet Stephens, Eagan, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Heather Lodico and her husband, Josh, Tim Benson, Kimberly Stephens, Kenny Stephens, Marie Kaalberg, Mike Belville, and Bob Belville; a great-grandson, Alex Kaalberg; stepmother, Josephine Stephens, Cambridge; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Roger and Claudette Stephens, Richland, Wash., and Carol Stephens, Washington, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his dad, his mom, and brothers, Vernon and Bill Stephens.

Kathryn Heaton
Kathryn E. Heaton, 65, Kewanee, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Ill.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic, Kewanee. Burial is in Mt. Olivet cemetery , Kewanee. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. tonight at Rux, Kewanee.

She was born Aug. 13, 1937, to Leonard and Margaret Van Damme Quanstrom.

Survivors are her husband, Jack; son, John Heaton, Brookfield, Wis.; daughters, Julie Yordy, Kewanee, Karen Petty, Wiesbaden, Germany, Cheryl Charvat, Moline; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, including Leonard Quanstrom, Galva.

Marjorie Bishop
Services for Marjorie J. Bishop, 77, Blue Grass, are 10 a.m. Thursday at Weerts, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service.

She died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

She was born April 23, 1926, to Emory and Katie Kellums. Survivors (and spouses) are her husband, Ted; daughter, Dawn (Ray) Lee, Viola; sons, Dennis (Laura), Bellevue, Iowa, and Dewey (Terry), Davenport; nine grandchildren; brother, Emory (Mary) Kellums, Davenport. She was preceded in death by son, Gene.

Esther Korner
Esther M. Korner, 92, of Davenport, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the Davenport Lutheran Home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

She was born March 22, 1911, in Monmouth, Iowa, the daughter of Magnus and Mathilda Evers Berner. She married Max W. Korner Dec. 14, 1932, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1983.

Esther was employed by the Sears Manufacturing Company, Davenport, retiring in 1973 after 14 years of service.

She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Davenport, and in earlier years, she loved to play cards with her family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Betty Schutte, Davenport, and Irene Byrd, East Moline; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Alma, Ethel, Irma, Irene and Florence; and brothers, Lawrence, Lloyd, Howard and Ed.

Patrick Lanphere
Patrick 'Pat' Lanphere, 19, of Davenport, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the home of his parents with whom he resided.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport..

Vivian Larrance
Vivian E. Larrance, 92, of Ames, Iowa, formerly of Davenport, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at the Bickford Cottage in Ames.

Arrangements are pending at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf.

Vincent Mitchell
Vincent T. Mitchell, 38, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers, Bettendorf. Interment will be private. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday.

He was born Sept. 24, 1964.

Survivors are his parents, Marge and Keith Mitchell, Bettendorf; sisters, Denice Bahrenburg, LeClaire, Iowa, Sharon Mitchell, Coos Bay, Ore., Pam Rourke, Bowie, Ariz., Margaret Baxster, Willcox, Ariz., Diane Edwards, Muscatine; brother, James Mitchell, Davenport, Michael Mitchell, Muscatine; mother, Joyce Stoot, Muscatine.

Marie Tullberg
Services for Marie E. Tullberg, 87, of Bettendorf, formerly of Davenport, will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Visitation will be 2 p.m. to service time Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park cemetery . Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church and School or a favorite charity.

Marie died on Sunday, June 15, 2003 at Bettendorf Health Care Center.

The former Marie Elizabeth Bargmann was born on Feb. 15, 1916, in Davenport, the daughter of Adolf and Martha Geisler Bargmann. Marie graduated from Trinity Lutheran School and later graduated from Davenport High School. Upon her graduation from Davenport High School, she worked at Swan Drug, where her fountain cherry cokes became famous. She later she worked in the office of Dr. J.H. Sunderbruch. She married Arnold Tullberg on Sept. 1, 1940, and became a fulltime homemaker and mother.

As a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church she served on and chaired numerous committees.

Survivors include her sister, Ruth Bargmann, Davenport; a son, Allen Tullberg and his wife Marjorie, Davenport; granddaughter, Stephanie Reyes and her husband Alfred; a grandson, Andrew and his wife Jaime. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Wilma, her husband, and a daughter, Carolyn.

Herbert Willers
Herbert F. Willers, 85, of Davenport, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Genesis East, Davenport.

Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park cemetery . Visitation is 11 a.m. to services.

He was born June 15, 1917, in Davenport, to Frank and Anna Struve Willers. He married Elsie M. Johnson July 20, 1939. She died Jan. 20, 1993.

He and his father farmed in Scott County. He also worked at J.I. Case, Bettendorf, for 17 years and Rock Island Arsenal for 22 1/2 years, retiring in 1979.

He was an avid bowler.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Susan Willers, Eldridge, Iowa; granddaughters, Melissa and Shannon Willers, both of Eldridge; and great-granddaughter, Mikayla.

Charles Crowe
Charles J. Crowe, 100, of Rock Island, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is in Mount Calvary cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to Arrowhead Ranch, Coal Valley.

Charles Jacob Crowe was born Feb. 17, 1903, in Kewanee, the son of Charles A. and Ida Wisniewski Crowe. He attended St. Ambrose College and graduated from Brown's Business College. He married Ruth S. Seaberg on Sept. 8, 1931, in Chicago.

He worked in sales for the wholesale division of the former Lytle Motor Company, and for Willys-Overland Company and Chrysler Corporation, retiring in 1954. During his retirement, he conducted personal financing of real estate and market investments.

He was a life member of the Outing Club, Davenport, Iowa Historical Society, and Elks Lodge 298, Davenport, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club, Rock Island County Historical Society, and Putnam Museum. He was a former member of the board of directors of First Federal Savings and Loan in Moline, and a 37-year member and past chairman of the Moline Zoning Board of Appeals.

He enjoyed reading, history, investing and discussing current events with his wife, relatives and friends. He also enjoyed smoking a good cigar.

Charles is survived by his wife of 71 years, Ruth; nieces and nephews, Dick and Wanda Seaberg, Lubbock, Texas; JoAnne and Dave Lund, Mesa, Ariz.; Bill and Ida Seaberg, Evergreen, Colo.; and George and Sue Seaberg, Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by a brother, George, and a sister, Monie Crowe.

Elton Hedquist
Elton T. Hedquist, 83, of Rock Island, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island, where military rites will be conducted by Moline American Legion 246. Visitation also will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the church, or the American Cancer Society.

Elton was born March 26, 1920, in Rock Island to Arvid T. and Ellen S. Anderson Hedquist. He married June M. Swanson on Sept. 18, 1948, in Rock Island.

Mr. Hedquist was a World War II veteran serving with the Navy on a submarine.

He was in machine design and a sales manager at Roemer Machine, Davenport, where he had worked for 27 years, retiring in 1987.

In earlier years he had served his apprenticeship at Deere and Co., Moline.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where he served on the church council, was a member of the property committee and had served as secretary of the Sunday school. He had been in Boy Scouting for 23 years and was an Eagle Scout, serving as scout master; life member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and founder and first president of the Illowa Chapter; a life member of Moline American Legion Post 246, former Go See Go Club, Two River Valley Branch 8406 of Lutheran Brotherhood and charter member of Pinnacle Country Club the former Mill Creek Country Club, life member of U.S. Sub. Veterans, Inc.-Holland Club Inc., American Scandinavian Association, and Nobel Lodge of Vasa, Moline.

Survivors include his wife June; a daughter and son-in-law Lynel and Jens Hetzler of Watertown, Wis.; sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Betty Hedquist of Bethalto, Ill., and Lance and Nada Hedquist of East Moline; grandchildren, Shawn and husband, Fred Belk, Rachel Hedquist, Matthew Hetzler; two great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Grace Hedquist of Rock Island.

Alice Mayernick
Alice M. Mayernick, 75, of Rock Island, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Woodhull (Ill.) cemetery . Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Alice was born June 28, 1927, in Moline, the daughter of Otis O. and Minnie E. Whitney Butler. She married George L. Mayernick on April 17, 1948. He preceded her in death in 1989.

She was a homemaker.

Alice was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was very active throughout the years. She was a member of the 'Busy Hands Club' quilting group.

She enjoyed volunteer work. For a number of years she assisted with the noon meal at Coventry. Her other interests included cooking and gardening.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Steve Fisher, Simi Valley, Calif.; grandchildren, Terri Lynn Fisher, Englewood, Colo., Scott Steven Fisher, Westminster, Colo., and Marc Steven Fisher, Simi Valley; great-granddaughter, Ciara Ann Fisher; and a sister, Hazel Christensen, Rock Island.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, George E. Mayernick, Jr.; daughter, Paulette Mayernick; sister, May Moran; and brothers, Glen, Frank, Clyde, and William Butler.

Frances Nicholson
Frances H. Nicholson, 80, of Rock Island, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Cremation will be accorded following services. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mairin Christine Wallner Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Frances was born April 24, 1923, in Clarksville, Tenn., the daughter of John V. and May Allen Hunt. As a graduate of Clarksville High School she was a state champion basketball player in 1941. She later attended Austin Peay State University, Clarksville.

She married Charles Carter Nicholson on June 19, 1943, in Clarksville. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1995.

Prior to her retirement, she was a court reporter for the area circuit court district. Previously she was a legal secretary for a number of years for Winstein, Kavensky, and Wallace, Rock Island.

She was a 50-year member of Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority and a member of the Rock Island Botanical Center.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Nicholson Wallner, Barrington Hills, Ill.; a son, F. Carter Nicholson, Moline; grandchildren, Dana Wallner, Colorado Springs, Colo., Lindsey Wallner, Barrington Hills, and Carter B. Nicholson, Moline; and a sister, Martha Pruitt, Clarksville. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter, Mairin C. Wallner, three sisters, and two brothers.

Janet Solis
Janet S. Solis, 58, of Rock Island, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, emergency room, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Lois Spickler
Lois M. Spickler, 87, of Rock Island, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline.
