June Bedford
June Bedford, 86, of Aledo, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Aledo Health and Rehab Center.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Aledo, with the Rev. Robert D. O'Conner officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic cemetery , Viola. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, where a memorial fund has been established.

She was born Jan. 19, 1917, in Burlington, Iowa, a daughter of Ira and Bertha Schneidler Cooper. She attended the local schools and married Charles Raymond Bedford Nov. 1, 1935, in Peoria, Ill. He died Aug. 26, 1974.

June was employed at the Roosevelt Military Academy in the food service department and retired from Mercer County Hospital as housekeeping supervisor after 16 years.

She was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Mercer County Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed being with her family.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Kidder, Oquawka, Dorothy and Leroy Newswander, Aledo, and Donna and Richard Millett, Reynolds; sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Martha Bedford, Aledo, Charles and Karen Bedford, New Boston, and Neil Bedford, Prophetstown; daughter-in-law, Debra Bedford, Millersburg; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Connie McCullom and Jean Smith, both of Burlington, and Leona Clayton, Missouri; brothers, Roy Cooper, Monmouth, Gerald Cooper, Mediapolis, Iowa, and Ron Cooper, Kahoka, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Tom; one sister; and four brothers.

Bobbi Keller
Bobbi K. Keller, 19, of Geneseo, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, in an automobile accident in Champaign County, Ill.

Arrangements are pending at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Geneseo.

Hayven Lewis
Hayven Skyy Lewis, infant daughter of Chad Lewis and Carla (Hofmann) Philhower, Kewanee, died June 24, 2003, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Rux, Kewanee. Burial is in Evergreen Memory Gardens. Visitation is one hour prior to services.

Surviving are her parents; brothers, Dylan and Colton Philhower, both of Kewanee; sister, Autumn Philhower, Kewanee; maternal grandparents, Joel and Bonnie Miculinic, Burr Ridge, Ill.; paternal grandmother, Patricia Lewis, Kewanee; maternal great-grandmother, Geraldine 'Jerry' Lambert, Kewanee; paternal great-grandparents, Forrest and Alice Lewis, Toulon, Ill. She was preceded in death by maternal great-grandfather, Leonard Lambert, and paternal great-grandparents, Howard and Debbie Shaw.

Frances Mayhew
Frances Amelia Peterson Mayhew, 97, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Dallas, Wis., Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Chetek, Wis., United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. tonight at Burnham-Ours Funeral Home, Chetek. Burial and graveside services are 11 a.m. Monday at Swedona Lutheran cemetery . The family suggests donations to the Swedona Lutheran Church cemetery Fund, Swedona Lutheran Church, or Chetek United Methodist Church.

She was born Dec. 9, 1905, in Swedona, to Alfred and Hannah Ferong Peterson. She attended Sherrard schools and Illinois State Teachers College, Macomb, Ill. She married Dool Mayhew Oct. 1, 1932, in Sherrard. She taught in rural schools prior to marriage.

She was an accomplished seamstress, tailor, gardener and hobbyist. She was an active member of Illinois Home Bureau for 25 years and a 4-H, PTA and church leader. She owned and operated a ceramic shop for many years. She was on the leading edge of ceramic and decorative art.

She worked for Augustana Book Concern, Rock Island. She lived in the Moline area and moved to Sturtevant, Wis., in 1963. She moved to Chetek in 1988 to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She loved to travel. Her sense of humor, zest for living, generosity and love of family was evident throughout her life.

Survivors (and spouses) include her son, Roger (Sandy) Mayhew, Fredonia, Wis.; daughter, Patricia (David) Hamm, Chetek; grandchildren, Roger (Margaret) Hamm, Maple Grove, Minn., Martin Hamm, Maplewood, Minn., Shawn Mayhew (Cristi), Concord, Calif., Michael Mayhew, Horicon, Wis., Timothy (Sarah) Mayhew, Pollock Pines, Calif., Sara Mays Mayhew, Chicago, and Anna Mayhew Rozek (Stephen), Kewaskum, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Mariah Hamm, Ashley Mayhew, Sydney Hamm, Christian Mayhew and Mickayla Mayhew; nieces and nephews; and sister, Marie Wirt, Rock Island. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dool Mayhew in 1986; sisters, Dorothy Bull in 1998 and Lillian; and brother, Leonard Peterson.

Leonard `Bill' Parkinson
Leonard C. 'Bill' Parkinson, 87, of Aledo, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at Aledo Health and Rehab Center.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, with the Rev. John R. Crede of Aledo United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial is in the Aledo cemetery . Visitation is 1 p.m. Saturday until service time at the funeral home where memorials may be left to Aledo Health and Rehab Center.

He was born May 8, 1916, in Aledo, a son of Harry and Esther Anderson Parkinson. He graduated from Aledo High School and married Mary Ellen Willem Sept. 23, 1944, in Burlington, Iowa.

Bill farmed his entire life before retiring in 1991.

He was a member of the Aledo United Methodist Church.

Before becoming a resident of the facility in 1997, Bill enjoyed farming, bowling, gardening and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ellen; a daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Steve Blaser, Aledo; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary Parkinson, Libertyville, Ill., Ron Parkinson, Tom and Anita Parkinson, all of Aledo; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Dollie Parkinson, Aledo; and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Chuck Hoff, Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond and Robert; and sisters, Edna Benson, Ethel Hofer, Clara Kindlesberger, Maude Schrieber, Madeline Leibig, Pearl Brokaw and Arlene Ricketts.

Elmer Jens
Elmer Jens, 88, of Davenport, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at Davenport Good Samaritan Nursing Center.

Arrangements are pending at Runge Mortuary, Davenport.

Robert Kress
Robert L. Kress Sr., 80, of Davenport, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Genesis West, Davenport.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial is in Memorial Park cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 3-7 tonight.

He was born March 8, 1923, in Davenport, to John and Maude Stafford Kress. He married A. Louise Franzen March 31, 1944.

Survivors are his wife; son, Robert Kress Jr., Mason City, Iowa; grandchildren, Cheri Kress, Washington, D.C., Jared and Amy Shuppy, Moline, and Dr. Jay and Kelly Koenen, Newton, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Benjamin Steckel
Benjamin Steckel, 86, Davenport, died June 25, 2003, at home.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Weerts, Davenport.

He was born April 8, 1917, in Davenport. He married Marion Williams July 18, 1948, in Crawfordsville, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Melanie Steckel, Blue Grass, Iowa; son, Jed Steckel, Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; sister-in-law, Elberta Steckel, Davenport; two nieces; and several cousins.

Milton Dismukes
Milton Dismukes, 72, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

Ruby Hoffman
Ruby G. Hoffman, 80, of Rock Island, formerly of Albany, La., died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

According to her wishes, there will be no services. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is handling arrangements.

She was born May 26, 1923, near Baton Rouge, La., to Louis Frank and Odra Pritchard Leteff. She married Terrill S. Hoffman in June 1943 in Selma, Ala. He died in 1980.

She attended Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, earning a teaching certificate. She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Baton Rouge, and First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Mass.

Ruby loved the opera, dancing and her family. She especially loved flower gardening and her rose garden of 300 bushes, which supplied area churches.

Survivors (and spouse) include her son, David (Jane) Hoffman, Rock Island; granddaughter, Millicent Hoffman, Chicago; grandson, John Hoffman, Rock Island; sisters, Myrle, Joyce, Patricia and Ramona; and brothers, Louis Jr. and Robert. She was well-loved by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, Andrew Leteff.

Virginia Russell
Virginia A. Russell, 85, of Rock Island, died June 23, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

There are no local services. She will be buried in Farmer City (Ill.) cemetery . Local arrangements are by Larson, Rock Island.

She was born June 2, 1918, in Union, Iowa, to Ernest and Clara Whinery Hauser. She married Charles L. Russell Oct. 12, 1961, in Springfield, Ill. Together they bought the Farmer City Journal and the DeWitt County Observer. He died Jan. 8, 1977.

She was a graduate of Central Iowa Business College, Marshalltown. From 1941 to 1961, she worked for Modern Woodmen of America, Rock Island.

Survivors (spouses) are nephews, Jack (Carita) Hoffman, Horicon, Wis., David (Loretta) Hoffman, Alan (Peggy) Hoffman, both Moline; and two nieces and a nephew in New York.

Leona VanLanigan
Leona VanLanigan, formerly of Rock Island, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, in Los Angeles, Calif.

Arrangements are pending at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

John Bauwens
John H. Bauwens, 85, formerly of Bettendorf, died Monday, June 23, 2003, in Tucson, Ariz.

Burial will be at New Melleray Abbey cemetery , Dubuque, Iowa. Further arrangements are pending.

Survivors include sisters, Katherine Shoemaker, Georgia, and Mary Helen Brust, Moline; brother, David, Tucson; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was Uncle John to many, a true friend, thoughtful, kind and generous in many ways.

Jim Burns
Jim Burns, 66, of Moline, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Parkview Terrace, East Moline.

Private family burial will be at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, is in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born Dec. 19, 1936, in Carthage, Ill., to James N. and Mary I. Dumon Burns. He married Shirley Piper Sept. 24, 1966, in Rock Island.

Jim was a United States Air Force veteran. He was employed by the Moline Tool Co.

Jim was a devoted grandfather. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing and football.

Jim is survived by his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Sharon Phares, Moline; granddaughters, Ashley and Bailey Phares; and a sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Roger DeBacker, Moline.

Kenneth Carlson
Kenneth L. Carlson, 75, of Moline, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to his church, First Covenant of Moline, or the United Way.

Kenneth was born May 6, 1928, in Moline, son of Carl and Esther Peterson Carlson. He married Bonnie Edlund June 11, 1949, in Moline.

Kenneth graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He began his career as an electrical engineer with Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and moved to Florida in 1957. He retired in 1989 after 32 years from E-Systems (now Raytheon) as vice president and general manager of one of their divisions.

He was an Army veteran during peace time between World War II and the Korean War.

While in Florida, he was active in the Covenant Church. He was on the St. Petersburg Board of Governors of the Chamber of Commerce. He was involved in the United Way and was a member of engineering groups. He was a member of First Covenant Church of Moline. He enjoyed boating, fishing and all Florida water sports. He also enjoyed traveling all over the world for business and pleasure.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Bonnie; son, Lon (Jackie) Carlson, St. Petersburg, Fla.; daughters, Linda (Peter) McFarland, Salmon, Idaho, and Sharon (Jay) Holub, East Moline; grandchildren, Poppy (Miguel) Sandoval, Shayla Holub, Jon Carlson, Christy Holub, Estelle Carlson and Kelci McFarland; and brother, Donald Carlson, Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Charles Johnson
Services for Charles E. Johnson, 57, of East Moline, are 10 a.m. Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Johnson died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Mr. Johnson was born March 16, 1946, in Moline, son of Kenneth and Evelyn Flemick Johnson. He married Bernice Holland in July 1990 in Rock Island.

He had served in the U.S. Navy and had worked at Wheeler Lumber, Rock Island. He enjoyed going to the horse track and watching sports on television. He was a Minnesota Vikings fan.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Johnson, East Moline; stepdaughters, Melissa Johnson, Cambridge, and Tammy Johnson, Cambridge; his mother, Evelyn Johnson, East Moline; brothers and sister-in-law, Vince Johnson, Bronston, Ky., Duane Johnson, Kentucky, and Durwin and Rebecca Johnson, East Moline. He was preceded in death by his father and brothers, Marlin and Dallas Johnson.
