James Hatfield Jr.
James Hatfield Jr., 41, of Davenport, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at home.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. There will be no visitation.

He was born July 17, 1962, in Des Moines, Iowa, son of James and Cora Stecker Hatfield.

He was a member of the ROTC.

Survivors are his mother, Cora Hatfield, Davenport; brother, Mark Hatfield, Davenport; sisters, Shellee Van Hove, Ames, Iowa, Joleen Cantrell, Atlanta, Ga.; and grandmother, Laura Stecker, Titonka, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

David Hubbard
David F. Hubbard, 80, of Davenport, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Edwin Koenig
Services for Edwin Koenig, 84, are noon Wednesday at Our Lady of Victory, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport.

He died Feb. 12, 2004, at Good Samaritan, Davenport.

Survivors are wife, Ruby; children, Frances Rettenmaier, Houston, Cecelia Peters, Albany, Ore., Katherine Ammon, Monroe, Wis., Rita Cirillo, Woodland Park, Colo., Rose Isenberg, Davenport, Jean Bishop, Letts, Pauline Mabry, DeSota, Texas, Donald, Browntown, Wis., and Phillip, Anamosa; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Alice Wiatt

Services for Alice Wiatt, 88, of Bettendorf, are 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Vianney Catholic, Bettendorf. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 1 to 3 p.m. today at Cunnick-Collins, Davenport.

She died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Bettendorf Health Care.

She was born Nov. 5, 1915, in Tulia, Texas, to Thomas and Mary (Deheck) Carney. She married Harold Wiatt June 5, 1935, in Nevada, Mo. He died in September 1983.

Survivors are daughter, Mary Dotson, Corbin, Ky.; son, Harold, Bettendorf; 10 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter.

Marianne Elder
Marianne Elder, 68, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at her residence.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Mrs. Elder was born Oct. 5, 1935, the daughter of Camiel and Rosemary Gannon Duytschaever. She married Robert E. Elder Aug. 8, 1953, in Rock Island. He died Jan. 13, 1997.

Along with being a homemaker, Marianne loved being with her family and especially spending Christmas with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time on her computer and researching family genealogy. She was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed doll making and camping. She was a former member of the Friends Circle Club, Moline.

Survivors and spouses include her daughters, Rosemary and Donald Solis, Milan, and Susan and Greg Crowder, Rock Island; sons, Daniel and Nilia Elder, Robert and Sue Elder and Patrick and Jackie Elder, all of Rock Island; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; stepmother, Clara Duytschaever, Moline; sisters, Camilla Hillman and Janeen Sant Amour, both of Rock Island; brother, Peter Duytschaever, Rock Island; stepbrother, Frank Herman, Moline; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by stepsister, Mary Ann Frickie.

Jessie Johnson
Services for Jessie C. Johnson, 95, of Rock Island, formerly of Moline, are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church, Moline. Burial is in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo.

Visitation is one hour before the services at the church. Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to ICARE, Illinois Curing Autism Through Research and Education, 851 Bowling Green, Homewood, IL 60430.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.

The former Jessie Claire Cady was born Oct. 7, 1908, in Geneseo, the daughter of Walter French and Clara Lamont Cady. She married Herbert V. Johnson on June 16, 1931, in Geneseo. He died Aug. 16, 1981.

Prior to her marriage, she was a secretary for Hull Insurance Agency in Prophetstown for four years.

She was a member of First Congregational Church, Moline; Moline Ladies of the Elks; Sterling Chapter 354, Order of Eastern Star; and Lillian Wendt Circle of Kings Daughters. Her main interest was her grandchildren, and she enjoyed sewing.

Jessie is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Gloria Johnson, Bella Vista, Ark.; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and James Meeker, Milan; six grandchildren and their spouses, Sue and Jay Davis and Sherry and David Holcomb, all of Manhattan, Kan., Brent and Kerry Johnson, Indianola, Iowa, Brad and Missy Johnson, Johnson City, Tenn., James P. Meeker, Norfolk, Va., and Kimberly and James Williamson, Arrowsmith, Ill.; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Neva Hall and Famah Echardt; and a brother, Dale Cady.

Jeffery Leeson
Jeffery L. Leeson, 50, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Davenport.

Gerald Wetherell
Gerald E. Wetherell, 73, of Rock Island, died Thursday Feb. 12, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, emergency room.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church or Alleman High School.

Gerald was born Nov. 16, 1930, in North English, Iowa, to Gayle and Helena Griffin Wetherell. He married Marjorie McGee on July 20, 1957, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Wetherell's career was in sales and managment at Fleck-Falstaff, Cedar Rapids, Block-Falstaff, Moline, and Lenor, Coal Valley.

He had lived in Cedar Rapids up to 1967, before moving to Rock Island.

Gerald was a member of Moline American Legion, Moline VFW, AM-Vets, and the Knights of Columbus in Cedar Rapids for more than35 years.

He was a sports enthusiast, as well as an outdoorsman. He also enjoyed cooking.

Gerald will be well remembered for his sense of humor and his devotion to his family.

Survivors include his wife; daughters and spouses, Val and Steve Frels, Bettendorf, Janet and Jeff Dye, Flushing, Mich., Mary and Mike Naab, Morton, Ill.: sons and spouse, Gary P. Wetherell, Rock Island, and John and Marlene Wetherell, Rock Island; grandchildren, Mike and Jenny Frels, Krista and Joey Naab, Kevin, Sean and Anna Wetherell; a sister, Kathleen Wetherell, Cedar Rapids. He was preceeded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Carolyn.

Russell Eddingfield
Russell D. Eddingfield, 82, of Hull, Ill., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at his home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Niebur Funeral Chapel, Barry, Ill. Burial will be in Park Lawn cemetery , Barry, with military graveside rites by Payson, Ill., VFW Post. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at Niebur's, where family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Born March 31, 1921, in Hull, he was a son of Raymond and May Oitker Eddingfield. He married Shirley Fay Bistline July 5, 1947, in Pontiac, Ill. He later married Viola Orbaugh.

He graduated from Hull High School in 1939 and Western Illinois University with degrees in business education (both BS and MS). He was a decorated veteran of the Army Air Force serving during World War II. He was a member of Hull Baptist Church and later the Swedona Lutheran Church. He was a hard-working member of society.

Survivors include eight children, Michael G. Eddingfield, Peoria, Nancy Jane Hollett, East Moline, Helen Jean Dykeman, Moline, Sally Jane Ortiz, Bettendorf, Patrick G. Eddingfield, Rock Island, Thomas J. Eddingfield, Hull, Dr. Frederick G. Eddingfield, Louisville, Ky., and Betsy Jane Wassell, East Moline; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Carol Ann Morris, Chicago. He was preceded in death by an infant brother; grandson, Andrew Wayne Redecker; and a nephew, Edward Morris.

Kathleen Layton
Services for Kathleen A. Layton, 88, of Moline, are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Frist Christian Church, Moline. Interment is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, Silvis. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. Memorials may be made to the church.

She died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Kathleen A. North was born on Sept. 11, 1915, in Carterville, Ill., to Samuel and Mabel Jones North. She married Chester Layton on June 25, 1939, in Chicago.

She was a 45-year member of First Christian Church, Moline, and the Golden Circle Class at the church. She loved to play bridge and was an outstanding cook.

Survivors include her husband, Chester Layton, Moline; daughter, Kathy Schlueter, Oak Park, Ill.; sons, Jack Layton, Rock Island, Terry Layton, Long Grove, Ill., and Donald Layton, Lake Zurich, Ill.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Olive Harden, Carterville, Ill.; and brother, Abe North, Carterville. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Edith Lee Parrish
Edith Lee Parrish, 92, formerly of Moline, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in Clinton, Wash.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is two hours before the service.

The former Edith Lee was born Aug. 20, 1911, in Northumberland, England, the daughter of George and Wilhemenia Scott Lee. She married Robert W. Parrish on Dec. 26, 1936, in Moline. He died Feb. 15, 1991.

Mrs. Parrish moved from Moline to Whidbey Island, Wash., nine years ago. She was a member of the Espicopalian Church and the Navy Mothers Club.

She is survived by two sons, Richard W. Parrish, Clinton, Wash., and Robert L. Parrish, Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Meersman, Moline.

Mary Parsons Ribble
Mary Parsons Ribble, 92, formerly of Moline and Milan, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island, where further arrangements are pending.

Jane Walewski
A celebration of the life of Jane Fowler Walewski, 47, of Des Moines, formerly of Moline and Geneseo, will be shared at Wendt Funeral Home by visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. today and funeral 1 p.m. Sunday.

She departed life at Des Moines, Iowa, Lutheran Hospital on Feb. 11, 2004.

Born in Moline, Jane spent her childhood in Geneseo. After graduating from Indian Hills College, Ottumwa, Iowa, with a degree in radiologic technology, she was employed by Des Moines Veterans Hospital.

Jane lives on in the hearts of many including her husband, Tom Walewski; 'canine children, ' Christmas, Princess, Snuggles; mother, Marjorie Fowler; father, Arnold Fowler; sisters, Carol Andrews, BJ Logue, Robyn Fowler; nephews, Michael Logue, Collin Andrews, Greg and Tom Plantakis; special friend, Sylvia Jacobs; her family of friends at the VA Hospital; and all those who shared her gift of love. She was preceded in death by her father, Francis VanOverberg. God bless and forever hold her in light.

Jack Sanders
Jack Sanders, 79, of East Moline, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Clara Toney
Clara I. Toney, 81, of East Moline, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Charles Ulfig III
Memorial Mass for Charles C. Ulfig III, 51, of Coal Valley, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Burial will take place prior to mass in Coal Valley Township cemetery . Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Organ and Tissue Services.

Mr. Ulfig died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center East Campus, Davenport, after a lengthy illness.

Charles C. Ulfig III was born Oct. 29, 1952, in Urbana, Ill., the son of Charles C. Ulfig Jr. and Patricia Bradshaw Ulfig. He married Mary Ellen Clow March 20, 1982, in Coal Valley.

A graduate of Rock Island High School and Black Hawk College, Charlie graduated with honors from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana in 1979, and received his MBA from Syracuse University in 1999. He was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma honor society at Syracuse and received the American Society of Military Comptrollers Research Award.

An Army veteran, Charlie served as bandsman in the 1st Division Band, playing tuba. Music was always an important part of his life. He began his musical career at the age of 3 or 4, playing in the Pontiac Municipal Band. As a youth, he belonged to Sing Out and toured with Up With People. He also played bass guitar with several local country rock bands over the years, and he and Mary enjoyed attending rock concerts and music festivals.

He was an accountant for the Department of Army since 1983, most recently serving as resource program specialist with the Army Field Support Command at Rock Island Arsenal. He last worked in October 2003.

Charlie will be fondly remembered for his quick sense of humor, his intelligence and broad knowledge, his friendly nature, Santa hats and snickerdoodles. He enjoyed his cats (Polly and Pete), the Fighting Illini and Chicago Bears, gourmet cooking, Halloween, golf and quiet evenings in front of the TV.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife and parents; a sister, Cathi (Carl) Fetzner; brothers, Brad (Ruth) and William (Helen) Ulfig; stepdaughter, Ellen (Ric) Clow; stepsons, Ed (Nancy), Jimi and Tom (Barb) Clow; 'Grandpa Charlie's' stepgrandchildren include, Mary Jo Thomas, Matt (Stephanie) Brown, Michael, Adam (Jennie), Matt and Kelly Mitchell, Amanda (Michael) Frietsch, Nichole and Monica Rush, Jennifer, Elaine, Will, Emily and Jim Clow; great-grandchildren include Clayton Thomas, Annika and Riley Brown and Marita Frietsch. Charlie was dearly loved by his nieces, Laura and Heidi Fetzner, Jamie and Mandy Claeys and Kayla Ulfig, and by his nephews, Brandon (Sherri) Ulfig and Nick and Eric Fetzner. Tyler and Trevor Ulfig and Sydney Leslie will hear much about their great-uncle over the years. An aunt, Shirley Gillette, and uncle, Jim Ulfig, also survive, as do a sister-in-law, Kathy McCabe; a great-aunt, cousins and countless friends. His grandparents and a great-grandson, McLain Thomas preceded him in death.

He was a good guy.
