Thomas Sedgwick
Thomas Sedgwick, 56, of Moline, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Services are 1:30 p.m. today at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to services. A memorial fund has been established.

He was born Oct. 22, 1947, in Rock Island, the son of Francis and Helen Pouder Sedgwick.

Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law Dixie and Ernest Kelly, Moline, and Emma Sue and David Goetz, Bettendorf; a brother and sister-in-law Harry and Georganna Sedgwick, Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Betty and Jackie; and a brother Frank.

Jane Walewski
Jane M. Fowler Walewski, 47, of Des Moines, formerly of Moline and Geneseo, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines.

Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Mary Ann Lohr
Mary Ann Lohr, 84, of Coal Valley, formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Oak Glen Nursing Home, Coal Valley.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or First Lutheran Church Endowment Fund. Esterdahl Mortuary, is assisting the family.

Mary Ann Palmer was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Gretna, Neb., to Jacob and Katherine Munster Palmer. She attended Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa. She married Francis E. Lohr on April 13, 1940, in St. Paul, Minn. He preceded her in death on March 1, 1988.

Mary Ann was a school teacher from 1943-1946 in West Union, Iowa. After Francis and Mary Ann's children were raised, she returned to work, where she was employed on the Rock Island Arsenal for 18 1/2 years, retiring on Dec. 21, 1982, as a contract specialist.

Mary Ann was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where she taught Sunday school and summer Bible school. She also was a member of WELCA and a former president. She was a member of the Davenport Moose Lodge and the Rock Island Y-Wives. She was a former president of the PTA for Irving School and Central Jr. High School, Rock Island. She was presented a life membership in the National PTA.

Mary Ann enjoyed traveling. She and her husband toured Europe on three occasions, spending a Christmas in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and a New Year's in Paris enjoying dinner in the Eiffel Tower.

Mary Ann enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son and spouse, James and Colleen Lohr, Coal Valley; grandchildren, John and Sarah Lohr; brothers, Kenneth Palmer and George Palmer, both of Oelwein, Iowa; sister, Katherine Bohart, Waterloo, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William and Volney Palmer; and a son, John R. Lohr.

Charles Ulfig III
Charles C. Ulfig III, 51, of Coal Valley, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport.

Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, where further arrangements are pending.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen.

Catherine Miller
Catherine L. Miller, 80, of Elgin, Texas, formerly of Milan, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at her home.

Arrangments are pending at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan.

Leolah Simpkins
Leolah G. Simpkins, 84, of Aledo, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo. Burial will be in Greenmound cemetery , Keithsburg. Visitation will be one hour prior to services today. Memorials may be made to Greenmound cemetery .

She was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Keithsburg, daughter of Arthur and Anna Hite Fullerton. She married George Simpkins Oct. 14, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death July 15, 1977.

Leolah was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church, Keithsburg. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and cooking.

Survivors are her sister, Donna Prentiss, Aledo; nieces and nephews, John Fullerton, Crown Point, Ind., Amelia Helm, Milan, and Augusta Woodley, Sherrard; two great-nieces; and one great-nephew. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Curtis Fullerton.

Eugene Walsten
Eugene Walsten, 100, of New Windsor, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Arrangements are pending at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home, Alpha.

Bessie Weatherington
Bessie M. Weatherington, 59, of Hillsdale, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Hampton cemetery . Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. A memorial fund has been established.

The former Bessie Marie Partain was born Feb. 13, 1944, in Golconda, Ill., the daughter of Claude and Velma Partain. She married Albert Weatherington on Oct. 1, 1960.

She had been employed at the former Moline Public Hospital. She enjoyed her grandchildren and playing bingo.

Survivors include her husband; sons and daughter-in-law, Donnie Weatherington, Hillsdale, Jeff Weatherington, Hillsdale, and David and Vicki Weatherington, Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren, Luke and Maggie Weatherington; a sister, Elsie Eckhardt, Orion; and a brother, C.J. Partain, Silvis. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny.

Donald Cook
Donald M. 'Don' Cook, 47, Davenport, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at home.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Weerts, Davenport. Burial is in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at Weerts.

He was born April 25, 1956, in Davenport, the son of Donald D. and Marion Koos Cook.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed water sports.

Survivors are his mother, Marion Cook, Davenport; brothers, Lt. Col. (retired) Charles Hicks, Chester, Va., Richard Hicks, Costa Rica, Calvin Hicks, Auburn, Wash.; and Uncle Peter and Sharon Koos.

Frederick Hunt Jr.
Fred B. Hunt Jr., 79, Davenport, died Feb. 11, 2004, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport. Visitation is immediately following the service. Cremation rites have been accorded.

He was born Oct. 7, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa. He married Tissa Craton July 19, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Minn.

Surviving are his wife; daughters, Catherine Weiss, Davenport, Jamie Vance, Neenah, Wis., and Leigh Butler, Bettendorf; son, Fred B. Hunt III, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janet Van Allen, Iowa City, Iowa.

Edwin Koenig
Edwin Koenig, 84, Davenport, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

Catherine McDowell
Catherine M. Reese McDowell, 95, of Evanston, Ill., formerly of Davenport, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004.

Funeral mass is 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Further arrangements are pending at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

Catherine VanDierendonck
Catherine H. VanDierendonck, 97, of Larchwood, Iowa, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of St. Mary, Larchwood. Burial will be in Larchwood cemetery . There will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. today at the church. Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids, Iowa, is handling arrangements.

She was born March 21, 1906, in Clontarf, Minn., the daughter of Peter and Anna Lens Kerkvliet. She married Louis VanDierendonck Jan. 27, 1931, in Alvord, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1992 at the age of 87, after 61 years of marriage.

Catherine grew up on the family farm and attended St. Mary's Catholic School. She farmed in northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota and did upholstery work for 35 years. The Sioux City Chamber of Commerce voted her Siouxland Homemaker of the year in 1963.

She served 25 years as a 4-H leader, was elected to Lyon County Agricultural Extension Council, served on county fair boards, had 50 years of service in St. Mary's Altar Society, and was involved in many other volunteer activities.

Survivors (and spouses) include her daughter, Mary Ann Bangasser, Sioux Falls, S.D.; sons, Joe (Virg) VanDierendonck, DeWitt, Iowa, Albert (Marcene) VanDierendonck, Los Altos, Calif., and John (Mickey) VanDierendonck, Hampton; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Mary (John) Herbst, Larchwood; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers and sisters who died at birth; brothers, John, Gerald, Francis and Charles Kerkvliet; and sister, Dena Kerkvliet.

Michael Goldsby
Michael G. Goldsby, 50, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at home.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to service time Friday.

Mr. Goldsby was born Sept. 10, 1953, in Moline, son of Albert and Georgia Nimrick Goldsby. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War era. Michael enjoyed playing the guitar and doing ceramics.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, LaVon and Brian Suchy, Silvis; nieces and nephews, J.C. Goldsby, Aaron Goldsby, Tara Goldsby, Joshua Palmer and Jade Suchy. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Richard Shellenberger
Richard O. Shellenberger, 80, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church, 620 22nd St., Moline, with the Rev. Virginia Pych officiating. Interment will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, with military honors by American Legion Post 246, Moline. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, with a 7:30 p.m. Masonic service conducted by Silvis Lodge 898 A.F. & A.M. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or First Congregational Church, Moline.

Richard was born Aug. 17, 1923, in Shickshinny, Pa., to William and Saloma Schreffler Shellenberger. He married Eleanor Tolmie in 1946 in New Jersey. She died in 1965. He married Laraine Mitchell July 12, 1977, in Las Vegas, Nev.

He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a first lieutenant and decorated pilot, flying B-24s. He was a mechanical engineer for Mattison Machine Works, Rockford, Ill., for 38 years, retiring in 1991.

Dick was a 60-year member of Washington Lodge 265 A.F. & A.M., Bloomsburg, Pa., a Boy Scout leader for 15 years, a member of the Wheel'N Steppers Square dance club and the former No Name dance club. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening and especially loved his family.

Survivors are his wife, Laraine Shellenberger, Rock Island; daughters, Toni DayHoff, Rockford, Candace Cooney, Sioux City, Iowa, Tracy Woehrle, Madison, Wis., Lynn Wilhelm, Rock Island, and Kim Mitchell, Rock Island; sons, Dr. Richard Shellenberger, Chillicothe, Ohio, William Shellenberger, South Beloit, Ill., Dr. Jerry Mitchell, Geneva, Ill., and Dr. Kerry Mitchell, Cupertino, Calif; brothers, W. Carl Shellenberger, Harve, Mont., and Kenneth Shellenberger, Post Falls, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Fern, in January 2004.

Charles Fisher Sr.
Charles Lee Fisher Sr., 64, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Southeast Hospital, Cape Girardeau.

Services were held in Cape Girardeau. Memorials may be made to the family at 137 Windsor Lot 40, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701.

He was born July 4, 1939, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Keith and Virginia Castle Fisher. He married Sharon Petary in March 1960.

He worked for Aramark in Moline and Kansas.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Charles Jr., Tomas and Kenneth, all of Cape Girardeau, John, Moline, and Kevin, Lenexa, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five brothers; three sisters, including Judy Shannon, Geneseo; and a half-brother, Walter Fisher, East Moline.

Theresa Gorg
Theresa Gorg, 91, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, formerly of Moline, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Hallmark Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon, the Rev. David Ambrosy officiating. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Morgan Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, with the wake service at 6 p.m.. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery , East Moline. Memorials in Theresa's honor may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 212 7th Street S.E., Mount Vernon, IA 52314.

Theresa was born Sept. 27, 1912, in Parndorf, Austria, daughter of Viet and Maria Gorgosilich. She immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island in September 1934. Theresa married Anton Gorg March 21, 1936, in St. Louis, Mo. He died in 1991. After his death, she moved from Moline to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Lisbon, Iowa.

She was a member of St. Mary's, Moline, and St. John the Baptist, Mount Vernon, Catholic churches. She was in the Altar and Rosary Society and Funeral Choir at St. Mary's, Moline. Theresa worked in food service for the Moline Public Schools until she retired.

Theresa is survived by her daughter (and spouse), Irene (Jack) Leonard, rural Lisbon; a son, Frank (Nora) Gorg, Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
