Dale Weber

Dale W. Weber, 78, of Montrose, formerly of Burlington, died at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, at his home.

Born June 21, 1926, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Earl Lynn and Alice Watson Weber. On Oct. 22, 1950, he married Vivian Alice Anton in Donnellson.

Mr. Weber worked for Dane Morgan & Associates, Sherman Smith & Associates, and finished a 26–year career with Mason & Hanger–Silas Mason Company, Inc. as a department engineer. He was licensed to practice structural and civil engineering in Iowa and Missouri and held membership in the National Society of Professional Engineers, was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, as well as a member of numerous state and local engineering organizations.

He was a 1944 graduate of Fort Madison High School. In 1947 he began course work in engineering at Iowa State College. In the fall of 1948 he took employment as an engineering aide with the Soil Conservation Service in Fairfield. He re–entered Iowa State in June of 1951 and graduated in December of 1953 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of St. Paul UCC of West Burlington where he sang in the choir and served on various committees and church council, and later joined the Montrose Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir as well as sang in performances with the St. Barnabas Choir. He also was a member of the Keokuk American Legion Post 41.

During retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively overseas and in the U.S. He enjoyed riding trains and riverboats, had an avid interest in trains of all kinds , collected railroad books and memorabilia.

Survivors include his wife, one son, Stephen Weber of Cockeysville, Md.; one daughter, Kathleen Fleming of Greenfield, Ind.; two grandsons; one brother, Albert Weber of Goleta, Calif.; one sister, Neoma Corey of Fort Meyers, Fla., and 16 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Weber will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Eads officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Madison. Full military rites will be by the Keokuk American Legion Post 41.

A memorial has been established for Lee County Hospice.

Harold Apple

Harold F. Apple, 78, of Burlington, died at 6:51 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 29, 1923, in Winfield, he was the son of Frank and Etta Barclay Apple. He first married Fran Simmons. They later divorced. On April 1, 1978, he married Mary Lou Carpenter in Burlington.

Mr. Apple was a salesman for Bullock Garage Co. for 23 years. He also was a substitute teacher for Burlington High School. He was in the teaching field for 17 years.

He was a graduate of New London High School and Iowa Wesleyan College. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a World War II Navy veteran, where he served at the invasion of Sicily and the invasion of Normandy. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 and had the rank of MOMM 1C.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking and naval reunions. He enjoyed working with children.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Carol Waters of Burlington, Tammy Stiles of Springfield, Mo., and Michelle Apple of Washington, Iowa; one stepdaughter, Cindy Peck of Mount Pleasant; one stepson, David Carpenter of Burlington; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, four sisters, two brothers and two infant daughters.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mr. Apple will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Terry Vance officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by VFW Post 3508 and American Legion Post 41 will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk.

A memorial has been established.

Eva Crow

Eva Mae Crow, 86, of Mendon, Ill., died at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Montrose Health Center in Montrose.

Born Aug. 26, 1916, in Carthage, Ill., she was the daughter of Charles Martin and Emma Gronewold Harris. On Nov. 13, 1940, she married Adolphus Crammer Crow in Keokuk. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Crow worked as a seamstress for the WPA and hired out as a housekeeper. She lived near Lima, Ill., for almost 63 years.

She was a 1935 graduate of Mendon Township High School. She attended Parkview Bible Church in Hamilton, Ill.

Survivors include one son, Roger Crow of Lima; one sister–in–law and nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, two half brothers, one half sister and one infant daughter.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton, where the family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m.

The graveside service for Mrs. Crow will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Lima Cemetery in Lima, with Pastor Larry Mulch officiating.

A memorial has been established for Keokuk Area Hospital Home Health Care.

Jesse Ward

Jesse "Dave" Ward, 79, of Gainesville, Mo., formerly of Middletown, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Gainesville.

Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel in New London.

John Young

John Robert "Bob" Young, 68, of Warsaw, Ill., died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at his home.

Born March 7, 1935, in Keo–kuk, he was the son of John and Gertrude Berthold Young. On Aug. 12, 1956, he married Ellen Marie Thalmann in Warsaw.

Mr. Young taught middle school math and science in various Hancock County schools for 20 years before going to work at Dadant and Sons in Hamilton, Ill., where he retired as plant manager in 1998. He was a 1953 graduate of Warsaw High School. He attended the University of Missouri for two years and later graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant with a bachelor of science degree.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw and the Warsaw Masonic Lodge No. 257. He was an avid waterfowl hunter, a talented athlete, and was a great storyteller known for his sense of humor and practical jokes.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Suzanne Elting of Warsaw, Betsy Lieb of Lombard, Ill., and Sarah Young of Rushville, Ill.; one son, John Young of Warsaw; five granddaughters; one great–granddaughter; one brother, Bill Young of Osceola, and one sister, Mary Lou Courtney of New Port Richey, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk. A Masonic rites service will be given during visitation at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Young will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw with the Rev. William Olmsted officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw.

Memorials have been established for the First Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge No. 257, both of Warsaw.

Paul D. Rynell

The graveside memorial funeral service for Mr. Paul Duane Rynell, 69, who died Sunday, August 10, 2003, will be Thursday, August 14th at 1:00 PM at Walnut Grove Cemetery , Media, IL. Friends may gather at Lunning Chapel and plan to leave at 12:30 PM for the cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Partners for Conservation Foundation, P.O. Box 714, Burlington, IA 52601.

Delzell Dietsch

Delzell Duane Dietsch, 80, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Fleta Caldwell

Fleta B. Caldwell, 89, of Keokuk, died at 1:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

Born Aug. 18, 1914, in Newark, Mo., she was the daughter of Benjamin Harrison and Tina Saunders Barnes. On August 28, 1935, she married Cecil Caldwell in Wyaconda, Mo. He preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1965.

Mrs. Caldwell was an Avon representative for more than 30 years and had worked at Shellor–Globe, Swift & Co. and Shaeffer Pen. In later years, she was a care provider and baby–sitter.

She was a member of First Baptist Church where she served on the first Deaconess Board and as superintendent of Bible school several times. She loved working with children. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, collecting dolls and making doll clothing to give to children. She also enjoyed playing Karem and croquet.

Survivors include two daughters, Bernice Vinson of Powdertown and Linda Ganley of Iowa City; one son, Richard Harrison Caldwell Sr. of Burlington; nine grandchildren; 17 great–grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Fordney of Memphis, Mo.; and three nieces and one nephew.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Caldwell will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at DeJong's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dale Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

A memorial has been established for First Baptist Church.

Helen Bernhart

Helen Louise Bernhart, 83, of the Burlington Care Center, died at 8:10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the care center.

Born June 26, 1921, in Nitche, N.D., she was the daughter of William Scotland and Margaret Weber Lease. On Aug. 5, 1939, she married Herbert William Bernhart in Kahoka, Mo. He died Aug. 24, 1987.

Mrs. Bernhart worked for Midwest Biscuit for 37 years, first as an evening shift supervisor, then in the printing room and sample room putting up cases for salesmen.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bingo and fishing from the shore, and spent many hours cooking, canning, baking, and making turquoise and silver jewelry.

Survivors include one son, Larry Bernhart of West Burlington; three granddaughters; three grandsons; two great–granddaughters; five great–grandsons; one sister, Gladys Bock of Eldridge, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Bernhart will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Tevis officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Disabled American Veterans.

Christopher Allen Simmons

The Memorial Service for Mr. Christopher Allen Simmons, 33, will be 1:00 PM Thursday, August 19, at River of Life Ministries in Cedar Rapids with Pastor Steve Irwin officiating. Mr. Simmons has been cremated, as per his request. A memorial has been established.

Mildred V. Richcreek

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Mildred V. Richcreek, 88, will be 7:00 PM, Thursday, August 19, in the Chapel of the Hass–Thielen Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Dennis G. Tevis officiating. Visitation will be Monday, August 23, at the Hillside West Funeral Home in Wichita from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Another funeral service will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 24, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Wichita with Pastor Ted Swope officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita. A memorial has been established to the Bethel Baptist Church.

Harold Heckenberg

Harold "Dutch" R. Heckenberg, 91, of Brownsburg, Ind. died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Brownsburg Healthcare Center.

Born Aug. 17, 1912, in Jefferson County, Iowa, he was the son of Lou and Myrtle Lee Heckenberg. On May 23, 1936, he married Hazel Humphrey Heckenberg. She died May 8, 1989.

Mr. Heckenberg farmed most of his life in VanBuren County. In 1979, he moved Round Prairie.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant and a prior member of Round Prairie Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Janice Wells of Avon, Ind.; 2 grandchildren; 7 great–grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Watson of Fairfield.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Calvary Baptist Church, Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends until the time of the services.

The funeral for Mr. Heckenberg will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Lambert Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Gideons.

Beatty Funeral Homes will be in charge of the arrangements.
