Michael Arneson
Michael Ray Arneson, 56, of De Soto, Kan., formerly of Rock Island, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kan., as the result of a car accident.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Olathe Christian Church, Olathe, Kan. Burial will be in De Soto cemetery . Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Amos Family Chapel, Shawnee, Kan. Memorials may be made to the Michael Arneson Memorial Fund for the education of his grandchildren.

He was born Dec. 9, 1947, in Monticello, Iowa, to Mr. and Mrs. D.R. Arneson. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1966 and attended Black Hawk College for two years. He joined the Marine Corps for two years and served time in Japan. He married Claudia Caenen Nov. 25, 1972, in Shawnee.

Mr. Arneson was part owner of and worked at K.A.W. Valley Framing Components. He was an avid fan of the KU Jayhawks, Iowa Hawkeyes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife; daughters, Stephanie (Trey) Davis, Fayetteville, N.C., Jennifer Arneson, Kansas City, Mo; grandson, Wils Davis, Fayetteville; mother and stepfather, Jean and Jerry Lynch, Rock Island; twin sister, Cheryl (Pete) Ortiz, Coal Valley, and sister, Nancy (Carl) Simms, Leesburg, Fla.; brother, Jay (Sandy) Lynch, Davenport; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, two aunts, two uncles and his grandparents.

Ruby Maess Ruby
Ruby L. Maess Ruby, 80, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at her home.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice or her church.

Ruby was born April 18, 1923, in Metropolis, Ill., daughter of Ulysses and Ada Holder Gossage. She married George Maess on Dec. 1, 1945, in Olney, Ill. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1979. She later married James R. Ruby in Davenport. He also preceded her in death.

In addition to being a homemaker, Ruby worked in defense plants during World War II. She later worked at Phoenix Jewelers, Moline, until her retirement.

She was known for the raspberries she grew and sold for many years.

Her interests included attending plays at Circa '21, where she was a season-ticket holder for many years. She also participated in several card clubs.

Surviving are her children (and spouses), Paula (Wadie) Knight, Gary, Ind., Jean (Larry) Fellman, Rock Island, George (Sandy) Maess, Milan, Ken Maess, Rock Island, and Timothy (Brenda) Maess, Rock Island; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Dixie Choate, Santa Maria, Calif.; two nieces; one nephew; and a number of great-nieces, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.

Blanche Serenius
Blanche L. Serenius, 98, a resident of Friendship Manor, Rock Island, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Friendship Manor Chapel. The family will greet friends following the service. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Serenius Family Scholarship at Augustana College, Rock Island. Arrangements are by Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

The former Blanche Williams was born June 20, 1905, in Moline, daughter of James and Della Keasey Williams. She married Dr. C. Arnold Serenius Aug. 23, 1932, in Rock Island. He died May 13, 1984.

Mrs. Serenius was educated in Rock Island Public Schools and graduated from Augustana College in 1926, where she was a member of Kappa Epsilon sorority. Following college, she taught school for the Rock Island Public School System and served on the faculty of Franklin and Washington Junior High Schools and later at Horace Mann Elementary School. She also taught at Coyne Center until 1973, when she and her husband moved to Alexandria, Minn. She returned to Rock Island in 1984.

Blanche was active in a number of religious, civic and political organizations. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Priscilla Circle. She was past president of the Eva B. Clarkson Circle of King's Daughters and formerly affiliated with the Silver Cross Circle. Her other memberships included Rock Island County Historical Society; Augustana Endowment and Historical Societies; American Scandinavian Association; Woman's Club of Rock Island, which she had served as vice president; member and past president of the Rock Island YWCA; sponsor and organizer of the Rock Island Junior Woman's Club; and Blackhawk Chapter of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a life member of the Illinois Parent-Teacher Association.

Mrs. Serenius was city chairwoman of the Republican Party for eight years and sang in the Handel Oratorio Society at Augustana for 30 years. At Friendship Manor, she had served on the resident council and ombudsman committee.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William A. and Sally Serenius, Charlotte, N.C.; grandsons, James, Jeffrey and Jonathan Serenius, and great-grandchildren, Emily, Wilson, Anna and Thomas Serenius, all of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Schaller.

Mercedes Abel
Mercedes S. Abel, 101, of Moline, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

Peggy Chandler-Nolin
Peggy J. Chandler-Nolin, nee Helstrom, of La Grange Park, Ill., passed away March 30, 2004, at La Grange Memorial Hospital, La Grange, Ill.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Holy Nativity, Richmond and 55th Street, Clarendon Hills., Ill. Interment is private. There is no visitaiton. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. For information, call Hallowell & James Funeral Home, Countryside, Ill., at (708) 352-6500.

She was born in Moline.

Mrs. Chandler was assistant professor of research at the UIC College of Nursing and member of the Chicago Chapter of the American Statistical Association and the American Public Health Association.

Survivors (and spouses) are her husband, Joseph J.; children, Niki Nolin, Chicago, Eric Nolin, Clarendon Hills, and Noni Nolin, Greene, Maine; stepchildren, Reed and Nancy Chandler; seven grandchildren; sister, Diane (Bud) Ransdale, Moline; and brother, Denny (Donna) Helstrom, Davenport.

Franklin Kleckner
Franklin I. Kleckner, 71, a resident of Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley, formerly of Milan, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to the family.

Franklin was born Oct. 21, 1932, in Bedford, Iowa, son of Herbert and Frances Kleckner. He married Ramona Ewart in Blockton, Iowa, in the late 1940s. She preceded him in death.

In early years, he was employed as a millwright at the Ralston Purina Co. in Davenport. He also worked at Frank Foundries, McLaughlin Body and John Deere, all in Moline. During his last working years, he was employed in a window manufacturing firm in Rantoul, Ill.

Those left to honor his memory include his sons, Gary Kleckner, Rantoul, and Larry Kleckner, Milan; stepdaughter, Gini Jones, Belleville, Ill.; grandsons, Jeff Brown, Lutz, Fla., and Michael Pond Jones, Belleville; sisters, Frances Ann Moffit, Galesburg, and Donna Beckett, Cheyenne, Wyo.; brother, Bill Kleckner, Creston, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Frank was preceded in death by seven sisters and brothers and his longtime beloved companion, Helen Pond.

Mynette Dooley
Mynette L. Dooley, 92, of Kewanee, died March 30, 2004, at Courtyard Estates, Kewanee.

A prayer service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kewanee. Burial is in Mount Olivet cemetery , Kewanee. Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Saturday. Schueneman-Tumbleson, Kewanee, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born June 15, 1911, daughter of August Samuel and Emma Caroline Palm Anderson. She married William C. Dooley June 17, 1937, in Kewanee. He preceded her in death in 1996.

Survivors are her daughter (and spouse), Carol (Joseph) Ast, Kewanee; son, William S. Dooley, Woodridge, Ill.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ann Dooley, Kewanee; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Daniel `Dick' Olin
Daniel Richard 'Dick' Olin, 74, of Alexis, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Alexis, where he was a member. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery , Alexis.

Friends may call Friday after 3 p.m. at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis, where his family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A rosary service will be held at 5:45 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be given to St. Theresa Catholic Church, Alexis.

He was born Aug. 23, 1929, in Burgess, Ill., son of Clinton and Edna Titterington Olin. He was reared and educated in Alexis. He graduated from St. Bede Academy in LaSalle-Peru, Ill., and attended St. Ambrose College, Davenport. Dick married Barbara VanFleet at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Alexis, on Dec. 20, 1951.

Dick farmed his entire life in the Alexis area. He served for eight years on the Alexis Board of Education. Dick served as a line officer with the 7th Infantry in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he received the Purple Heart.

Survivors (and spouses) are his wife, Barbara Olin, Alexis; sons, Bill (Kris) Olin, Andover, and Mark (Trinette) Olin, Alexis; daughters, Kathy (Mike) Flanigan, Bloomington, Ill., Mary Margaret (Reid) Abrams, LaJolla, Calif., Mary Ann (John) Hunt, Bartlett, Tenn., and Janie (Rich) Sullivan, Davenport; 17 grandchildren; a brother, Jim (Nancy) Olin, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; sisters, Ann (Ed) Verbeke, Olympia Fields, Ill., and Mary (George) Gillen, Monmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Alice O'Toole
Alice O'Toole, 92, of Oquawka, died March 30, 2004, at Great River Medical Center, Burlington, Iowa.

A graveside committal of her ashes is 10 a.m. Saturday at Oquawka cemetery . Turnbull, Oquawka, is handling arrangements.

She was born June 21, 1911, daughter of Elliott and Ida Mae Hays Thompson. She married Lloyd O'Toole in the 1940s. He died in the 1970s.

Alice was the owner/operator of several taverns and cafes in the Quad-Cities area. She owned the Milky Way Tap in Coal Valley for many years.

She loved to read murder mysteries, fishing, and bingo.

Survivors are her niece, Dorothy Stubbs and 'Sport, ' Oquawka; nephew, Dean Shaw, Gladstone, Ill.; and great-nieces and -nephews.

Donald Stetson
Donald Stetson, 80, of Princeton, Ill., formerly of Neponset, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at home.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Cremation has been accorded and private inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials go to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or a favorite charity.

He was born April 20, 1923, in Kewanee, to Ezra and Lottie Steele Stetson. He married Kathryn Gunning May 25, 1946, in Neponset.

Survivors are his wife; sons, Dan, Princeton, Ill., Robert, Johnston, Iowa; daughters, Linda Stetson, Neponset, Patti Fahey, Yorkville, Ill., Barbara Kapacinskas, Houston, Texas, and Mary Nyert, Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and sisters, Carolyn Bond, Winter Park, Fla., and Susan Smith, Omega, Okla.

Jerry `Tiny' Sturms
Jerry L. 'Tiny' Sturms, 70, of Aledo, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

His body was cremated. Interment of ashes will be at a later date at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Family Funeral Services, Milan. Memorials may be made to the family in lieu of flowers.

He was born April 18, 1933, in Bradford, Ill., son of Dewey and Louella Mercer Sturms. He married Linda Love Aug. 31, 1952, in Toulon, Ill. They were later divorced.

He was a parts manager at E & J Metals for 22 years, retiring in 1996. He was a Korean War Army veteran. He enjoyed working on antique cars, collecting anything, western movies and pro wrestling.

Survivors (and spouses) are sons, William (Dona) Sturms, Bettendorf, Jerry (Louise) Sturms Jr., Obion, Tenn.; daughters, Cindy Davis (Kenny Klahn), Port Byron, Sherill (William) Rath, Aledo; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren with two more on the way; and brothers, Jesse Sturms, Milan, and Bobbie Joe Sturms, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Signe Thornbloom
Signe L. Thornbloom, 93, of Port Byron, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron.

Betty Haut
Betty Haut, 76, of Davenport, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at Genesis West, Davenport.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic, Davenport. Burial is in Holy Family, Davenport. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, with a 7 p.m. rosary.

She was born June 8, 1927. She married Hubert Haut Sept. 8, 1947.

Survivors (and spouses) are her husband; children, Marian (Rick) Nylin, Eric (Mary) Haut, all of Davenport, Matthew (Sherry) Haut, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; brother, Richard Brammann, Davenport.

W. `Jack' Hogren
Private graveside services for W. 'Jack' Hogren, 84, of Davenport, were held Wednesday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Cunnick-Collins, Davenport, was in charge of arrangements.

He died March 28, 2004, at Fejervary Health Care, Davenport.

He was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Moline, to Amos and Marrilla Wilkins Hogren. He married Bernice Lund June 2, 1943; they divorced in 1972. He married Elaine Ronk in 1973. She died in 1987.

Survivors are daughter, Lana Hogren, son, Tony, both of Davenport; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Sandra Scott
Sandra J. Scott, 61, of Davenport, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at her home.

Services are 5 p.m. Friday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport, with visitation following the service until 8 p.m.

She was born Jan. 6, 1943, in Keokuk, Iowa, daughter of Emerson and Maxine Tigue Rose. She married Richard Scott in 1961.

She enjoyed playing bingo and visiting with her grandkids.

Survivors are her husband; son, Richard Jr., Wheaton, Ill., Patrick, Davenport; six grandchildren; sisters, Beth and Barbara; and several nieces and nephews.
