Stella Thompson
Stella R. Thompson, 87, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at her daughter's residence in Rock Island.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will be at Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Stella was born Dec. 22, 1916, in Lucerne, Mo., the daughter of Guy and Lena Petit Pauley. She married William M. Thompson Nov. 6, 1964, in Coal Valley. He died Jan. 17, 1985.

She was an inspector at Birtman Electric in Rock Island and prior to this she worked at Farmall. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Milan, and the Rock Island VFW 1303 Ladies Auxiliary. She loved flowers and playing cards.

Stella is survived by a daughter (and spouse), Bett (Stephen) Holub and a son, Gilbert (Jody) Overton, all of Rock Island; nine grandchildren; many great- and great-great- and great-great-great grandchildren; sisters, Vivian Buhman, Bettendorf, and Bess Blank, Geneseo; brothers, George Pauley, Milan, Robert Pauley, Davenport, and Ronald Pauley, Rock Island; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Terry Lynn Hesser; and brothers, Lloyd, Bill, Mike, Ed and Rex Pauley.

Betty Morris
Betty Gail Morris, 77, of Moline, died March 23, 2004, in McAllen, Texas.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

Amanda Starkweather
A Mass of Christian Burial will be recited at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Church, Moline, for Amanda C. Starkweather, 18, of Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline.

Visitation is 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family.

She died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in Lynnville Township, Ill., as the result of a traffic accident.

Amanda C. Starkweather was born July 11, 1985, in Rock Island, the daughter of Thomas and Theresa Van Erstvelde Starkweather.

She had been employed at Orange Julius, SouthPark Mall, Moline. Amanda was a 2003 graduate of Moline High School, and was presently a freshman at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill. She enjoyed sports and played Dad's Club softball for many years. Starting as a freshman, she had served as manager of the Moline High School football team, throughout her high school years. Amanda was very thoughtful and family oriented, helping others in any way she could.

Survivors include her mother, Theresa Mack, sisters, Jessica Starkweather, and Emily Mack, brothers, Joshua Starkweather, and Ryan Mack, and maternal grandmother Doris R. VanErstvelde, all of Moline. There are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Amanda was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Starkweather; maternal grandfather, Albert VanErstvelde; and paternal grandparents, C. Galen and Geraldine Starkweather.

Robert Willis
Robert F. Willis, 47, of East Moline, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at his home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, with military rites conducted by the East Moline American Legion Post 227. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

He was born Oct. 4, 1956, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Linden and Alyce Lambert Willis. He married Virgie Hunter May 13, 1989, in East Moline.

He was a truck driver for 17 years, last working for All Points Trucking.

He was a Navy veteran. He enjoyed motorcycling, wrestling and his grandchildren.

Survivors are his wife; daughter, Kizzi Williams, Carbon Cliff; sons and spouse, Dennis and Marisol Willis, and Sean Willis, all of Moline; granddaughters, Jordan and Isabella; grandsons, Augustine, Dangilo, Kalangilo, William and Zaydian; two sisters; and one brother. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ellen Gabbert
Ellen Gabbert, 96 years, 8 months and 16 days, of Warrenton, Mo., died Friday, March 26, 2004, at the New Florence Nursing Center, New Florence, Mo.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis, with the Rev. Larry Fackler officiating. Burial is in Roselawn cemetery , Moline. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Schroder. Memorials may be made to the AmHeart Hospice, c/o Martin Funeral Home, 510 E. Main, Warrenton, MO 63383.

She was born July 10, 1907, in Kellerville, Ill., to Samuel and Nellie May Darrow Lawson. She was united in marriage to Joseph Gabbert on Aug. 21, 1928, in Virginia, Ill. To this union was born one daughter, Josephine. Her husband preceded her in death on March 26, 1983. They celebrated 54 years of marriage.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Relief Corps and the Moose Lodge, both in East Moline. She attended Silvis Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Josephine McFail, Muskegon, Mich.; four grandchildren, Connie Tony and husband Albert, Ravenna, Mich., Karen Mason and husband Craig, Grand Haven, Mich., Randy McFail and wife Linda, Warrenton, and Chris McFail, Muskegon; eight great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

Margaret Loding
Margaret Loding, 94, of Silvis, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Aspenwood Health Care, Silvis.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Schroder. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Silvis, or the American Diabetes Association.

She was born Dec. 21, 1909, in Silvis, to Charles and Alma Johnson Hanson. She married William J. Loding Dec. 19, 1929, in Silvis. He died Oct. 21, 1974.

She was employed as a teacher. Her first teaching position was in a one room schoolhouse in Cleveland.

She taught Sunday school and was the church treasurer at First Baptist church for many years. Margaret also was awarded the Christian Education Award in 1990. She held the longest membership in the church.

Survivors (and spouses) are her daughter, Janet (Bruce) Ketner, Silvis; daughter-in-law, Lucia Loding, Plainfield, Ill.; grandchildren, Jeanine Donley, Anthony Loding, and Julie Jodoin; five great-grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; three stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Roberts, Bedford, Ind. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Loding on Feb. 28, 2004; sisters, Alice, Helen and Charlene; and brother, Don.

Bonnie Sheldon
Bonnie J. Sheldon, 66, of Silvis, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline.

Pearl Bengtson
Pearl Bengtson, 78, Kewanee, died March 26, 2004, at Kewanee Care Nursing Home.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rux, Kewanee, with visitation one hour prior. Burial is in Evergreen Memory Gardens, rural Kewanee.

She was born April 5, 1925. She married John Bengtson Aug. 18, 1945. He died in 1992.

Survivors are her sons, Wesley, Davenport, Robert, Kewanee; daughters, Carolyn Kuster and Jan Scott, both of Kewanee; six sisters, including Lola Dziengle and Inez Olson, both of Kewanee, Edith Fronk, Annawan; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Barbara Gerke
Barbara L. Gerke, 89, of Port Byron, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis.

Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gibson's Funeral Home, Port Byron. Services will follow at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery , Rapids City. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

The former Barbara L. Coyne was born May 12, 1914, in Port Byron, daughter of James and Emma L. Earhart Coyne. She was a beautician when she met and later married Bernard 'Barney' C. Gerke in the Panama Canal Zone on July 22, 1941.

After an extended period of employment at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., the Gerke family moved to Port Byron in 1955, where they purchased their family farm. Barney was considered a 'gentleman farmer, ' working at the Rock Island Arsenal and coming home to his real love, their farm.

Both were active with the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Barbara held many offices including district chairman, president of the Drill Team, and was honored as Mother of the Year. Her affiliation with the Eagles spanned more than 30 years.

Sadly, on Feb. 24, 1983, Barney passed away, leaving Barbara to operate the farm herself. The family farm, with its sheep, cattle, poultry, wild birds, fields and wooded hills was a constant source of contentment to her. Mother loved her farm. She resided at home until an injury requiring specialized care led to her spending her final days as a patient at Illini's Restorative Care Center.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Karlene and Robert Sandstrom, San Diego, Calif.; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Dawn Gerke, Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren, Dr. Robin Sandstrom Papaconstantinou, of Athens, Greece, Michael Gerke of Washington; and Jeri Lyn Gerke of New Mexico. There are also six great-grandchildren.

Rodney Hudgins
Rodney Hudgins, 47, of Geneseo, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo.

Arrangements are pending at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo.

Mary Malcolm
Mary 'Jo' Josephine Malcolm, formerly of Alpha, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at her home in New Orleans, La., after a long, courageous fight against cancer.

A memorial service and cremains interment will be held at a later date in Woodhull. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mary 'Jo' was born May 15, 1933, in Formosa, Kan., the daughter of Roy T. and Mary E. Sadler Maulsby, She was raised and educated in Randall, Kan. She married Chauncey F. Malcolm Jr., on Dec. 12, 1952.

She was a graduate of the American Floral Arts School, Chicago, and owned the Bouquet Shoppe in Alpha. Mary and her husband moved from Alpha to New Orleans in 1972 where she was a business partner with him in their caramel corn shop for more than 30 years.

Her memberships included the United Methodist Church, New Orleans, past president of Chapter L of the PEO, Woodhull, and Les Marionetts Mardi Gras Krewe, New Orleans, where she was a former Queen, Captain and Maid.

Her favorite pastimes were traveling, Mardi Gras, theatre and singing with the Sweet Adelines. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Survivors (and spouses) are her husband; son, Steven L. (Joan) Malcolm, Houma, La.; grandchildren, Stephanie (Rodney) Lirette, Houma, Bradley and Ryne Malcolm, Baton Rouge, La., and Dylan and Alicia Jones, New Orleans; brother, Francis (Shirley) Liton, Raytown, Mo.; and a brother-in-law, Gene Malcolm, Rock Island. Also surviving are an AFS son, Eric Therkelson, Denmark, and AFS daughter, Kerry Thomson, Australia. She was godmother to Jenny Lind Mejia, Aledo. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; a sister; daughter, Marva Jones; and four stillborn children.

E. Earl Terrill
E. Earl Terrill, 87, of Aledo, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Aledo Health and Rehab Center.

Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the New Boston cemetery . Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, where in lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

He was born July 25, 1916, in Missouri, a son of Elmer Clarence and Birdie Thomas Terrill. He married Martha J. Huston March 20, 1945, in Joy. She died April 11, 1997.

Earl was a farmhand all his life for area farmers, retiring after 25 years with Speer Farms south of Aledo.

He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Velma and Donavan Stineman, New Boston, Nancy and Doug Nelson, Illinois City; son, Ronald Terrill, New Boston; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mamie Howe, Eliza, Delta Mumey, Joy and Florence McMahon, West Liberty, Iowa.

Glenn Woolley
Glenn E. Woolley, 82, of rural Lynn Center, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday at the Augustana Lutheran Church, Andover. The Rev. Lynn Bergren will officiate. Burial will be in Western Township cemetery , Orion. Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Cambridge. Memorials may be made to the Parish Nurse Program for Andover or Orion churches, or the Augustana Lutheran Youth Program.

Glenn Woolley was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Orion, the son of Ira and Bessie B. Sheesley Woolley. His marriage to Elma Peters took place Aug. 26, 1945, in Andover Township. Mr. Woolley was educated in Orion schools and was a farmer in Lynn Township. He was a licensed and bonded livestock buyer and bought cattle and hogs for many area farmers.

His memberships included the Augustana Lutheran Church, Andover, Andover Senior Citizens, Mississippi Valley Coon Hunters Association, and he was a long time member of the Livestock Buyers Association. He raised ponies and had a pony track at his farm, and people traveled from around the state to race their ponies there. Glenn was passionate about hunting, fishing, card playing and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Elma; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Rod Ward; three grandchildren and spouses, Stephanie and John Ortegel, Kimberley and Alan VanDuyne, Pamela Ward; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Olivia Ortegel and Hayley VanDuyne. His parents and a brother, Willis, preceded him in death.

David Dreesman
David L. Dreesman, 51, of Bettendorf, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at his home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Central Baptist Church, George, Iowa. Burial will be in Evergreen Lawn cemetery , George. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogelaar-Bolin Funeral Home, George.

Townzell Nicholson-Garnica
Funeral services for infant Townzell Cornelius Nicholson-Garnica will be 11 a.m. Monday in the All Faith Chapel of the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. The Rev. Melvin Grimes will officiate. Visitation is one hour prior to services Monday. Burial is in Pine Hill cemetery .

Townzell was stillborn on March 23, 2004, at Genesis East Hospital, Davenport.

He is survived by his parents, Jessica Garnica and Townzell Nicholson; brothers, Chanslor and Chase; maternal grandparents, Greg and Pam Garnica, and paternal grandmother, Diann Nicholson, all of Davenport; maternal great-grandparents, Wanda Heim, Frances Garnica and Joe and Wanda Garnica, all Davenport.

Stanley Halley
Stanley Halley, 58, Blue Grass, Iowa, died March 25, 2004, at home.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Runge, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park cemetery . Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Runge.

He was born Feb. 16, 1946, to Stanley and June Peterson Halley. He married Delores Ritter Feb. 14, 1970.

Surviving are his wife; son, Shawn Halley, Evansville, Ind.; mother, June Halley Price, Roselle, Ill.; stepdaughter, Yvette Olson, Chetek, Wis.; three grandchildren; sisters, Monica Roberts, Summerfield, Fla., Shelba Lafort, Huntley, Ill.; a sister-in-law.
