Ella Joens
Ella Joens, 87, of Davenport, went to join her husband and son in eternal rest June 1, 2004.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Runge, Davenport. Burial is in Maysville cemetery . Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. today.

Ella Dengler was born May 3, 1917, in rural Scott County, Iowa, to Henry and Emma Dengler. She married Elmer Joens in 1936. He died Sept. 12, 1990.

Surviving are her brothers and sister-in-law, Irvin Dengler, Davenport, Lester and Mary Dengler, Davenport; nieces, nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Ronald, Oct. 2, 1965, and three brothers.

Mary 'Kiki' McCabe
Mary Catherine 'Kiki' Priester McCabe, formerly of Davenport, died at her home in Atlanta, Ga., on Sunday, March 7, 2004, at the age of 75. The cause was non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, said her daughter, Cathy McCabe Gonzalez.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Private burial will be in Mount Calvary cemetery , Davenport. Cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Quad City Symphony or Hospice Atlanta at 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Ms. McCabe was born Sept. 22, 1928, the sixth of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Priester of Davenport. Her maternal grandfather was Patrick Walsh, founder of Walsh Construction Co., later becoming the Atkinson Walsh Construction Co. Kiki married James R. McCabe in 1952 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Known as 'Kiki' to her family and friends, she attended St. Mary's College in South Bend, Ind., and earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Georgia.

Ms. McCabe was a truly accomplished pianist, as well as television script writer, having written for CBS' 'The Guiding Light, ' NBC's 'Another World, ' and ABC's 'All My Children, ' for which she won an Emmy.

Her survivors include her daughter, Cathy McCabe Gonzalez, and son-in-law, Hector Gonzalez, formerly of Argentina, Atlanta; son, Michael Joseph McCabe, and daughter-in-law, Ann McCabe, San Jose, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Also surviving her are her sister, Eda Priester Hofmann, Pleasant Valley; and her brothers, Patrick Priester, Bettendorf, and John Priester, Denver, Colo. Kiki was preceded in death by her brothers Lt. Henry Priester Jr., who was killed in World War II, Edward Priester and Robert Priester.

Betty Oaks
Betty I. Oaks, 80, of Bettendorf, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Genesis East, Davenport.

Services are 11:30 a.m. Friday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

She was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Knoxville, Iowa.

Survivors (and spouses) include her sisters, Norma (Jim) Lake, Bettendorf, Ellen Goode, Des Moines; brother, Ted (Marilyn) Robinson, Davenport; local nieces, Linda Guenther and Debbie (Alan) Kinsey, both of Bettendorf, Cindy (John) Medinger, Moline; nephew; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Harvey Simon
Harvey H. Simon, 85, of Davenport, died May 31, 2004, at Good Samaritan Home, Davenport.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial is in Holy Family cemetery . Visitation is 9 a.m. to services Thursday. Arrangements are by Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

He married Bernadine Salemink in 1946. She died in 1978. He married Cecelia Backus in 1980.

Survivors include his wife; stepsons, Patrick Backus and Jerry Backus, both rural Scott County; a stepgranddaughter; two stepgreat-granddaughters.

Robert Pemberton Sr.
Robert L. 'Bob' Pemberton Sr., 56, of Rock Island, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at his home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greater Antioch Baptist Church, Rock Island, where he was a member and an usher. Burial will be at Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation will be two hours before the service. Memorials may be made to the family.

Bob was born July 2, 1948, in Vicksburg, Miss., son of Leo and Rosalie (Wilson) Pemberton. He married Diane Herrod June 14, 1975, in Rock Island. He later married Carol Ford July 2, 1997, in Rock Island.

Bob was a playground supervisor at Grant School, Rock Island.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ford, and daughters, Denise and Lynette Pemberton and Gloria Gibson, all of Rock Island, and Tiffany Thomas, Arlington, Texas; sons, Robert Jr. (Sadie) and Damien Pemberton, Davenport, and James Sims, Rock Island; stepdaughters, Claudette and Ebony Ford, and stepson, Andre Ford, all of Rock Island; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eleanore Diedrick
Eleanore Diedrick, 84, a resident of Moline, formerly of Mesa, Ariz., died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Moline, after a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Entombment will be in St. Mary's cemetery Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, with a wake service at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

She was born June 4, 1920 in LaSalle, Ill., daughter of Edward and Cecelia (Lipinski) Ossowski. On Nov. 25, 1943, she was united in marriage to Delmar H. Diedrick in LaSalle.

Eleanore was employed as a floral designer and assistant manager of Knees Florist in Moline for more than 20 years. Her devout faith was always an important part of her life and she celebrated Mass daily.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband of more than 60 years, Delmar; her daughters and son-in-law, Marcia and Dick Johnson and Jan Davis, all of Bettendorf; her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Diedrick, Galena, Ill.; her grandchildren, Valerie Mayo, Moline, Melissa Schade, Davenport, Laurie Schade, Bettendorf, and Mark Diedrick and his wife, Kristen, Prescott, Ariz.; her sisters, Cecil Donnelly, Peru, Ill., and Clara Wyszynski, LaSalle; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Floyd and Aileen Ossowski, Sun City, Ariz., and Chet and Julie Ossowski, Sun City West, Ariz. Eleanore was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Jim Davis; her sisters, Marie Liss, Gert Wieczorek and Jean Klansek; and her brothers, Edward Ossowski and Walter Ossowski.

Carolyn Green
Carolyn J. Green, 70, of Peoria, died Aug. 1, 2004, at Proctor Hospital, Peoria.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilton Mortuary, Peoria. The Rev. Howard Love will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following services. Burial of cremains will be at Springdale cemetery , Peoria, at a later date.

Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to services Thursday. Memorials go to Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter, 2600 NE Perry, Peoria, IL 61603.

She was born June 9, 1934, in Moline, to Otto Augustus and Martha Amanda (Peterson) Koester. She married Delbert Clark Green March 5, 1954, in Rock Island. He died Oct. 27, 2002, in Peoria.

She was a certified nurse's aide for Lutheran Social Services, Peoria, retiring in 1997 after 10 years. She was a member of First Lutheran, Rock Island.

Surviving are daughters, Laurie (David) Schneider, Peoria, Marty (Mike) Miller, Marion, Iowa; sons, Mike (Colette) Green, Moline, and Gerald Sy Green, Peoria; seven grandchildren; sister, Patty (Donald) Anderson, Showlo, Ariz.; and brothers, Larry (Lylas) Koester, Milan, and Gary (Sandy) Koester, Rock Island. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Jeremy Hartman
Jeremy M. Hartman, 28, of Moline, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center-Illini Campus, Silvis.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is at Calvary cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Jeremy was born Oct. 12, 1975, in Moline, to Danny and Debbie Mitchell Hartman. He married Karla Anderson Aug. 19, 2000, in Edgington.

Mr. Hartman was employed at Jones Electric, Colona, as an electrician.

Survivors include his wife, Karla; mother and stepfather, Debbie and Larry Johnson, Taylor Ridge; sister, Sonia Pool, Rock Island; brothers, Josh Hartman, Taylor Ridge, Troy Hartman, Taylor Ridge; stepbrothers, Joe Johnson, Colona, Robert Johnson, Carbon Cliff; grandfather, Al Mitchell, Rock Island; grandmother, Shirley Harms, East Moline; mother-in-law, Karen Anderson, Davenport; father-in-law, David Anderson, Reynolds. He was preceded in death by his father in 1984.

Jerome Napiwoski
Funeral services for Jerome A. 'Jerry' Napiwoski, 75, of East Moline, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Napiwoski passed away at his home Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004. Memorials may be made to the family.

Jerry was born Aug. 23, 1928, in St. Paul, Minn., son of John and Antoinette Morin Napiwoski. He married Laura E. Van Overschelde Smiddy on July 25, 1959, in East Moline.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from the former John Deere Plow Planter Works, Moline. He enjoyed doing work around the house, playing rolle bolle and spending time with his grandchildren. He was longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. He had been very active in various organizations. Jerry will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Laura Napiwoski, East Moline; daughter, Linda Morehouse, East Moline; son, Larry Smiddy, Silvis; grandchildren, Lorri, Marlow and Michael Abraham, Toni Smiddy; great-grandchildren, Nicole and Danielle Abraham; great-great-grandchildren, Javon and Jeremiah Jernigan; sisters, Francis, Doris and Viola; brothers, John, Stan and Gene. He was preceded in death by parents; son, Lance Smiddy; great-great-granddaughter, Hailey Abraham; sister, Antoinette; brothers, Rob, Frank and Joe.

Francis Peterson
Francis W. Peterson, 78, of East Moline, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Forest Hill Health & Rehab, East Moline.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Family Funeral Services, Colona, with visitation 9 to 10 a.m. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, with military rites conducted by Colona American Legion Post 1233. Memorials may be made to Beacon of Hope Hospice.

He was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Kewanee, son of Walter and Stella Harlow Peterson. He married Roberta Hauger Jan. 1, 1947, in Kewanee. He married Nelma Best Butler Sept. 14, 1962, in Colona.

He was a repairman at the Case-IH plant, East Moline.

He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge 512, Kewanee.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Nelma; son, Kenneth (Connie) Peterson, Kewanee; daughters, Susan (Al) Kitterman, Sandwich, Ill., and Rose Mulder, Galva; stepdaughters, Sheila (James) Ulmer, Colona, Jewel Peterson, Moline, and Sue (Don) Pace, Milan; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Bernard Peterson, Creve Coeur, Ill., and Maurice Peterson, Independence, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Louis Peterson.

Ronald Westervelt
Ronald R. Westervelt, 57, of East Moline, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Forest Hill Health and Rehab, East Moline.

Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis, to proceed to National cemetery , Arsenal Island, for graveside services. His body will be cremated. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial is in National cemetery .

He was born April 1, 1947, in Burlington, Iowa, son of Ray and Gertrude Riepe Westervelt.

Ron was a dispatcher for several trucking companies. He served in the Navy on the USS supply ship Sylvania, in the Mediterranean Sea and at Norfolk, Va.

Ron graduated from United Township High School in 1965, then went to Western Illinois University, earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1970. He enjoyed fishing and sports.

Survivors include his mother, Gertrude Westervelt, East Moline; stepson, Doug Leinevwever, Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers (and spouse), Jim Westervelt, Colona, and Ken (Debbie) Westervelt, Crossville, Tenn.; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and special friend, Jack Weime, Moline. He was preceded in death by his father, Ray.

Lois Kopp
Lois I. Kopp, 81, of Silvis, died Aug. 1, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center-Illini Campus, Silvis.

There will be a private family memorial service at Heritage Wesleyan Church, Moline, followed by a joint private burial of cremains at National cemetery , Arsenal Island, for Lois and her husband, Clark.

Lois was born July 5, 1923, in Charleston, Ill., to Charles and Ora Downey Poston. She married Clark G. Kopp Aug. 3, 1942, in Arnold, Mo. He preceded her in death Oct. 20, 2001.

Survivors are daughter, Arlene (John) Parker, Colona; two granddaughters, Kimberly (Bradley) Ulick, Manito, Ill., and Amy (Nathan) Norton, Ligonier, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Reese, Bailey and Lorinda.

Ida Malmen
Ida Malmen, 92, of Silvis, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

Mary Holmgren
Mary E. Holmgren, 89, of Milan, died Aug. 2, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

According to Mary's wishes there will be no visitation and private family graveside services will be at Illinois City cemetery . Esterdahl Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born Sept. 9, 1914, in Moline, to William W. and Mae Hibner Schutte. She married Leonard R. Holmgren June 19, 1935, in Moline. He preceded her in death Oct. 30, 1989.

Mary was a secretary for 25 years for Dr. F. Eihl in Moline, retiring in 1977. Mary was a member of Moline Gospel Temple.

Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Louann and Carroll Furst, Illinois City; son and daughter-in-law, William and Anne Holmgren, Taylor Ridge; grandchildren, William, Kirk and Scott Minard and Kimberly Van Kirk; great-grandchildren, Emily, Adam, Shawn, Colin and Connor Minard; stepgreat-grandchildren, Stephanie, Jay and Tasha Minard. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Stephen Holmgren; and brother, Donald W. Schutte.

Suzanne McMurry
Suzanne McMurry, 62, of Rockford, Ill., died July 27, 2004.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday at New American Theater, Rockford. Memorials go to NAT or Winnebago County 4-H Foundation, 4311 W. State St., Rockford, IL 61101. Arrangements were by Honquest, Rockford.

She was born Dec. 1, 1941, in Orion, to E.L. and Elizabeth Wilson McWhinney.

She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She taught at Sunny Hill School, Orion, for three years, married and eventually settled in Rockford.

Survivors are children, Elizabeth Russo, Rockford, Sara Dady, St. Paul, Minn., Katy McMurry, Atlanta, Ga., Robert McMurry, Washington, D.C.; two granddaughters; and brother, Scott McWhinney, Coal Valley.
