Alice Ludwig
Alice Margaret Ludwig, 53, of Black Diamond, Wash., passed away July 4, 2004, at Overlake Hospital, Bellevue, Wash.

Her family will have a celebration of life memorial for Alice from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 at Lady Di's, Parkview, Iowa. Her family would love to see Alice's friends and our friends at her memorial. If you have any silly or funny memories of Alice, please bring them with you and share them with us all. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alice's family.

Alice grew up in Eldridge, Iowa. She married Verle Lee Ludwig Feb. 17, 1968. They have two children, Meloni and her finace, Joe, and Chris and his wife, Jill, Bettendorf, who have two children, Nickolas and Jake, whom Alice loved all so very much.

Alice has four brothers and four sisters. Her brothers and wives are Tom and Vanita Barnet, Davenport, David and Linda Barnet, Oregon, Tony and Rose Barnet, Moline, and Michael Barnet, Oregon. Her sisters and husbands are Barb and Bill Box, rural Eldridge, Mary and Duane Fletcher, Davenport, Karen and John Tarchinski, Eldridge, and Becky and Jerry DeMartelaere, Eldridge. She also loved her many nieces and nephews.

Alice and Lee moved to Black Diamond in 1988. She worked and was manager at The Bakery and Restaurant in Black Diamond for about 15 years. She loved working with all the help at the restaurant and bakery. She was eight days from her dream of buying the business before she became ill.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; a niece, Martha Fletcher; and a nephew, Robert Fletcher.

Duane Machalek
Duane N. Machalek, 59, a resident of Bettendorf, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Duane was born Oct. 5, 1944, in Davenport, son of William and Lucille Pinard Machalek. He was a graduate of Bettendorf High School. He retired in February 2001 from John Deere Plow and Planter Works in Mount Joy, where he was employed as a welder.

Duane was a person who lived and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an avid boater, a dedicated boxing fan, enjoyed drag racing, loved specialty cars and was affectionately known as a 'gear-head.' Following his retirement, he, enjoyed traveling, especially to the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. Even though he is gone, the many wonderful and fun memories will live forever in the hearts of his family and many friends.

Those left to honor his memory include his children and their spouses, Marcus and Cathy Machalek, Davenport, their daughter, Lisa, and her daughter, Brianna, Scott and Alice Machalek, Davenport, and their children, Nevan and Cassandra, Amy and Ryan Taylor, Buffalo, Iowa, and their son, Josh; his brothers, sisters and spouses, Darrell and Jean Machalek, LeClaire, Iowa, and their children, Darrell Jr., Deon, Wendy, Lori, Connie and Lisa, Georgia Hughes, Kentucky, and her children, Megan, Shari and Daryl, Sid and Brenda Machalek, Rock Island, and their children, Arminda and Tim, and Taina Machalek and her husband, John, Rock Island, and their children, Michael and Gabrielle; and many wonderful and special friends. Duane was preceded in death by his parents and by his Uncle Gordon.

Virginia Miller
Virginia M. Miller, 89, of Davenport, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Genesis West, Davenport.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at McGinnis-Chambers, Bettendorf. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. today.

She was born Sept. 12, 1914, to William and Sarah Livingston. She married Frank Miller Oct. 8, 1938, in Bettendorf. He died Sept. 1, 1980.

Surviving are her daughter, Marjorie VanWinkle, Bettendorf; grandchildren, Victoria Neitzel, Davenport, Jeff and Jennifer VanWinkle, both of Bettendorf; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Melvin `Bud' Nyenhuis
Melvin V. 'Bud' Nyenhuis, 88, of Davenport, formerly of Rock Island and LeClaire, died July 29, 2004, at Genesis East, Davenport.

Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at McGinnis-Chambers, Bettendorf, with graveside services following at Greenwood cemetery , Muscatine.

He was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Muscatine, to William and Barbara Nyenhuis. He was employed 32 years at International Harvester, Rock Island, retiring in 1972.

Surviving are his sister, Florence Mark, Davenport; and cousins, Jerry Jungman, Stuart, Iowa, Evelyn Dorothy, Davenport, and Jack Woods, Denver, Colo.

Jocelyn `Jos' Pedersen
Jocelyn 'Jos' Pedersen, 87, of Berwyn, Ill., formerly of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction.

Rosemary Shay
Sister Rosemary Shay, CHM, 91, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Bishop Drumm Care Center, Johnston, Iowa.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Humility of Mary Center, Davenport. Burial is in Mount Calvary cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is after 4 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Peace Chapel, Bishop Drumm, Johnston, with 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. wake service. Visitation is after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Humility of Mary Center, Davenport with 7 p.m. wake service.

She was born Dec. 22, 1912.

She is survived by five nieces and a nephew.

Sonya Williams
Sonya Kate Williams, infant daughter of Christopher and Theresa Odean Williams, of Epworth, Iowa, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

Elizabeth Caudill
Elizabeth M. 'Betty' Caudill, 67, of Rock Island, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. It was Betty's wish that she be cremated following visitation. Burial of her ashes will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Betty was born Oct. 19, 1936, in Moline, the daughter of George and Gabriel Houvenaghel Raymond. She married Raymond Caudill June 12, 1965, in Moline.

Along with being a homemaker, Betty worked at the former International Harvestor Works, East Moline Plant, at various 7-11 Stores in the Quad-Cities area, and she was also a metermaid for the city of Rock Island.

She was a member and a former secretary of the Moline Elks. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing cards.

Betty is survived by her husband, Raymond; daughter, Melanie Stoner and her husband, Adrian, Moline; sons, Shane Van De Voorde and special friend, Janet Parks, Rock Island, Zachary Van De Voorde and special friend, Penny Wilson, Sherrard; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded by a sister, Rosalie Jensen, and her parents.

Larry Groves
Larry Lee Groves, 53, of Rock Island, died July 29, 2004, at his home.

There will be no services. Burial is in Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island.

Larry was born Feb. 21, 1951, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Edward and Gretchen Wentworth Groves.

Larry worked for V.I.P. Services in Bettendorf. He enjoyed being on the computer.

Larry is survived by his mother, Gretchen Groves, Rock Island; brothers, Gerald Lewis, Rockford, Ill., and Ted Groves; and several nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his father.

Edward Schoede
Edward C. Schoede, 89, of Rock Island, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Florence Britz
Florence M. Britz, 95, of Moline, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at Christ the King Church, Moline. Further arrangements are pending at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Ann Britz, Moline.

Helen Hicks
Helen M. Hicks, 82, of Moline, passed away Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Per her wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Cremation rites will be accorded. Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is assisting the family.

Helen M. Roach was born on Aug. 30, 1921, in Kirkland, Ill., to Art and Pearl Eckland Roach. She married Delbert Hicks Jr. Dec. 20, 1946, in Rockford, Ill.

Those left to honor her memory are sons, Delbert Hicks, Upatoi, Ga., Thomas Hicks, Pekin, Ill.; daughter, Karen Hicks Stewart, Moline; eight grandchildren; brother, John Roach, Belvidere, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sister, Ellen.

Cletis Jones
Cletis Jones, 76, of Moline, went home to God Friday, July 30, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where further arrangements are pending.

Roberta Davis
Roberta A. Davis, 67, of East Moline, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

E. Yvonne Ellison
E. Yvonne Ellison, 73, of East Moline, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, East Moline. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline, is assisting the family.

Yvonne was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Oshkosh, Wis., the daughter of Wilhelm and Olive Engel. She married James B. Ellison March 7, 1964, in Erie.

Yvonne was employed as a secretary for various businesses. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, East Moline. She was also a Life Master/Life Member of the ACBL.

Survivors include her husband, James B. Ellison, East Moline; five children, Nancy Moon, David Ellison, Mark Robinson, Greg Robinson and Kurt Robinson; two stepchildren, Jimmy Ellison and Elaine Bolinger; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cynthia; a son, Doug; and a brother, Bill.

David Phanhlathy
David A. Phanhlathy, 22, East Moline, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at his home.

Visitation is noon to 5 p.m. today at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Cremation rites will begin at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

He was born Dec. 8, 1981, in Clinton, Iowa, to Bouavanh and Khamnang Bouasy Phanhlathy.

David had been working as a meat cutter at Tyson Food, Joslin.

Among survivors are his parents; brother, John; and sister, Kim.

Sandra Townsend
Sandra S. Townsend, 65, of Carmen, Ill., formerly of East Moline, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at her residence.

Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Monday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where further arrangements are pending.

Charles Dorch
Charles L. Dorch, 89, of rural Colusa, Ill., passed away Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Memorial Hospital, Carthage, Ill.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Colusa United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Beckie Laumeier officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge cemetery , Carthage. The family will meet with friends at the church from 10 a.m. until services Monday. Memorials may be made to the church. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, LaHarpe, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Feb. 14, 1915, in Courtney County, N.D., the son of LeRoy and Clara Cummings Dorch. On June 17, 1936, he married Roberta L. Rhea at the Rhea family home near Colusa. She preceded him in death Sept. 3, 2001.

He farmed more than 50 years in the Colusa area and served on the Hancock County Farm Bureau Board. He was a member of Colusa United Methodist Church, where he was involved in many church activities and where he served as Sunday school superintendent for 15 years.

He is survived by sons (and spouses), Robert (Nancy) Dorch, Lincoln, Ill., Rheamond (Norene) Dorch, Ronald (Mary) Dorch, both of Dallas City, Ill., Randell (Ruth Ann) Dorch, Coal Valley; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
