Elmer Wayne Diehl
Elmer Wayne Diehl, 73, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in Hillsdale.

There are no services. According to his wishes, his body will be cremated.

Elmer Wayne Diehl was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Iowa City, Iowa, son of Donald and Bertha Sadler Diehl.

Elmer was a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II in Germany. He was employed at the former J.I. Case, Rock Island, and had maintained the grounds at Blackhawk State banks in the Quad-Cities area. He enjoyed roller skating.

Survivors include daughters, Teresa Loquist, East Moline, and Robin Bowland, Salem, Ky.; sons, Dan Diehl, Waterloo, Iowa, Hoyt Diehl, Taylor Ridge, and Carl Thompson, Moline; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Donald, preceded him in death.

Marie Smith
Marie Louise Smith, 86, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Hampton cemetery , Hampton.

Marie was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Moline, daughter of Morgan and Eunice Albrecht Smith.

Marie was employed as a legal secretary with Lee & Lee Attorneys at Law for more than 60 years. She enjoyed knitting.

Survivors (and spouses) are sister, Anne Swanson, Moline; nieces, Annette Wood (Charles), Amboy, Ill., Joan Ray (Gary), Mary Phillips (Norman), both Davenport; nephew, Pete Laing (Barbara), Davenport; many special great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Laing, and a brother, Roger Smith.

A special thanks to Teresa Ware for her care and devotion for several years.

Howard DeCausemaker
Howard C. DeCausemaker, 89, of Moline, died Oct. 7, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Rite of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, with visitation one hour before, at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline. In lieu of flowers and statuary, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Howard was born Dec. 3, 1914, in Moline, to John and Alta VanHoek DeCausemaker. He married Berniece Milam and later Wilma Sommers.

Howard was a meat cutter for Eagle Foods and later worked as a security guard. He was employed at Eagle Foods for 35 years, retiring in 1979.

Howard was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Chicago Meat Cutters and also a member of the Rock Island Police Association. He was a Cubs fan and liked to watch boxing on television. He enjoyed visitors and spending time with his family.

Survivors (and spouses) are daughter, Diana Cliff; sister, Gladys Dumolien; grandchildren, Robert (Jenny) Williams, Gary Williams, Allison Cliff, Zachary Cliff; great-grandchildren, Laurel, Emma, Molly and Daniel Williams; special friend, Velma Grobman; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marlowe Williams; brother, John DeCausemaker; and sister, Frances Karlix.

Charles Mahan
Charles V. Mahan, 84, of Moline, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

A sharing of memories will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Charles Vern Mahan was born June 13, 1920, in Trenton, Mo., son of Alvin Otto and Laura Elizabeth Renfro Mahan. He married the former Thelma L. Fair Dec. 24, 1940 in Trenton. She preceded him in death Oct. 19, 1988. He then married Khoun Kham Thiravong May 25, 1996, in Moline.

Charles was employed as a locomotive engineer on the Rock Island Lines for 41 years, retiring in 1984. During the late 1930s, he was a clarinet player in the George Hamilton Band, Chicago, then was a welder in the M4 Tank Factory in Hammond, Ind., and worked in the Carnegie Steel Mills in South Chicago. His first job was elevator operator in the Palmer House Hotel in downtown Chicago.

Charles served his country during World War II as a metalsmith 2nd class in the U.S. Navy. After retiring, he drove the train at Niabi Zoo for a few years.

In his younger days, he was known as a good athlete, and even ran an exhibition race against Jesse Owens in 1939 in Trenton.

Survivors include his wife, Khoun, Moline; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Mel Farley, East Moline; a brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Theresa Mahan, East Moline; a son, Michael Mahan, Denver, Colo.; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Kalvin and Kawahi Thiravong and Phetsamone Thiravong; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Mahan.

David Williams
The Rev. David E. Williams, 76, of Moline, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at Big Meadows Eden Alternative Home in Savanna.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Zaro Poe Sr.
Zaro E. Poe Sr., 86, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at Forest Hill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, East Moline.

Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Jesse Wilburn
Jesse L. Wilburn, 77, of Silvis, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Memorial services for Mr. Wilburn will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jesse Wilburn was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Spickard, Mo., son of Jesse D. and Clessie Dinsmore Wilburn. He married Shirley Wood Jan. 28, 1950, in Spickard. He started working with the Rock Island Lines as a switchman and retired as an engineer for the SOO Lines after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Moose, Eagles and Masons. He enjoyed pool, darts, golf, euchre and bowling. He also enjoyed playing the guitar.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wilburn, Silvis; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Richard Wesolowski, East Moline; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Rita Wilburn, Port Byron; grandchildren, Jennifer, Carrie, Brian, Connie and Jeffrey; great-grandchildren, Austin and Emily; sisters, Coy Peskey, Freeport, Ill., Odevine Bulyar, Trenton, Mo., Betty Ader, Thomson, Ill.; brother and sister-in-law, Stacy and Dorothy Wilburn, East Green Bush, N.Y.; Ivan Wilburn, Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

George Barton
George S. Barton, 69, of Coal Valley, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, with the Rev. Paul Pett of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan, officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial is in Alpha cemetery , Alpha. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established.

George S. Barton was born July 23, 1935, in Canton, Ill., son of Clyde L. and Edith Wittmyer Barton. He graduated from AlWood High School in Woodhull. George married the former Linda M. Tornes March 20, 1983, in Milan. He was employed at John Deere Harvester Works in the Combine Manufacturing Division as a warehouse shipper for more than 35 years, retiring in 1992.

George was a member at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan. He was a volunteer for the Sherrard Ambulance Association. He enjoyed fishing and bowling with his brothers, and loved playing with his grandchildren.

George is survived by his wife, Linda; a son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Jodie Barton, Sherrard; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Randy Crawford, Sherrard, Kelly and Kevin Gasper, Moline, and Missy and Jon VanderLinden, Moline; two stepsons, Jay and Paul Schwartzkopf, both Sherrard; seven grandchildren, Linaya Bennett, Tabitha and Morgan Crawford, Tyler and Kayla Gasper, and Seth and Millie Barton; a great-grandaughter, Kelsie McGuirk; six brothers and their spouses, Kenneth "Bake" and Marilyn Barton, Roy Barton, Gene and Thelma Barton and Harold Barton, all Alpha, Paul Barton, Viola, and David and Loretta Barton, New Windsor.

Herbert Clark
Herbert J. Clark, 87, of Geneseo, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wright Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Geneseo. The Rev. R. Carrol Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Liberty cemetery , rural Atkinson. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Herbert Clark Memorial Fund.

Herbert Clark was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Munson Township, Henry County, Ill., son of William and Clara Lane Clark. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1934. His marriage to Mildred "Millie" Kuhl took place on June 28, 1944, in Geneseo. Herb worked for more than 60 years for Hulting Hybrids, Geneseo, and its successors. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Geneseo, for more than 50 years, where he served as custodian for many years and was head usher for 30 years.

He was an active member of Geneseo Lions Club. Herb was an original member of the Old Goat Band, performing for more than 32 years, and was a member of the Geneseo Senior Citizens Kitchen Band. He had traveled to 49 of the 50 states.

Survivors include his wife, Millie; a daughter, Sharon Weber, Geneseo; a grandson, Troy Mariman, Geneseo; and an "adopted" daughter, Beverly Grant and her family. His parents, a sister, Grace Wigant, and four brothers, Harold, Howard, Clifford, and Rolland, preceded him in death.

Marjorie Gustafson
Marjorie E. Gustafson, 82, of Cambridge, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cambridge Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kris Dietzen will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery , Cambridge. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Memorials may be made to Cambridge Lutheran Church or the Cambridge Academic Foundation.

The former Marjorie Olson was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Andover Township, Henry County, Ill., daughter of Swan and Esther Peterson Olson. She was educated in the Cambridge area and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1940. She attended AIC in Davenport and worked for the Rock Island County Farm Bureau prior to her marriage. On Feb. 26, 1944, in Cambridge, she married James F. Gustafson. The Gustafsons farmed in Osco Township until retiring.

Her memberships include Cambridge Lutheran Church and its WELCA group, where she had served as president, and the Social Hour Club. She was past president of the Cambridge Junior Women's Club, the Senior Women's Club and the PTA. Marjorie enjoyed reading, music, playing the piano, farm life, the Chicago Cubs, her friends and, especially, her family.

Surviving are her husband, James; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Bryce Chamberlain, rural Geneseo; son and daughter-in-law, David and Jill Gustafson, rural Cambridge; five grandchildren, Ben Chamberlain, Ames, Iowa, Jon (Kim) Chamberlain, rural Geneseo, Kim (Bruce) Radke, Glen Ellyn, Ill., Kurt (Christi) Gustafson, Altoona, Iowa, Brent Gustafson, Chicago; and three great-grandchildren, Brock and Sophia Radke and Grace Gustafson. Also surviving are three sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene Rehn, Downers Grove, Ill., Evelyn and Philip Swickard, Knoxville, Va., and Willard Blomquist, Waukegan, Ill.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Helen Olson, Andover. Her parents, three sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.

Melvin Magerkurth
Melvin F. Magerkurth, 91, a resident of Hillcrest Home, Geneseo, formerly of rural Cambridge and Geneseo, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Hillcrest.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. The Rev. William Deisher will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo, where military honors will be accorded by Don Cherry Post 5083 VFW, Geneseo. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to Lorraine United Methodist Church or the Activity Department of Hillcrest Home.

Melvin was born June 18, 1913, in Edford Township, rural Geneseo, son of Fred and Ida Firch Magerkurth. He graduated from Geneseo High School. He served his country in the Army during World War II. He married Gretchen Ole Oct. 4, 1940, in Geneseo; she died in 1996.

Melvin was a lifelong farmer in rural Geneseo. He was a member of the Lorraine Church, former member of the Geneseo School Board, Henry County Board, Munson Township Supervisor, and the Cambridge Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed traveling to Florida with his wife, Gretchen.

Survivors (and spouses) include sons, Sid (Sally) Magerkurth, Rod (Debbie) Magerkurth, all Geneseo; grandchildren, Amy (Drew) VanKerrebroeck, and Dan, Grant and Matt Magerkurth, all Geneseo. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a brother, Leland Magerkurth.

Dolorita Otis
Dolorita E. Otis, 88, of Kewanee, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Kewanee Hospital.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schueneman-Tumbleson, Kewanee. Burial is in Pleasant View cemetery , Kewanee. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

She was born Oct. 22, 1915, in rural Galva, to Albert E. and Elizabeth Lockey Doye. She married Emnas C. Otis in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1960.

Survivors (and spouses) are daughters, Dianne (Loren) Lindstrom, Kewanee, Deanna (Jerry) Lancaster, Rock Falls; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Glenn Urban
Glenn E. Urban, 84, of Hillsdale, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at home.

Services will be 4 p.m. Monday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be at a later date in Bethesda cemetery , Hillsdale. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Monday. A memorial fund has been established.

Mr. Urban was born Nov. 21, 1919, in Hooppole, son of George and Ilma Sommers Urban. He was educated in Hooppole schools and graduated from Prophetstown High School in 1937. He was an aerial engineer in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He married Beulah Gerlach Nov. 18, 1945, in Yorktown. She died Feb. 2, 1998. He then married Doris E. Grebenouski July 26, 2000.

He had owned and operated the John Deere Store and the Chevrolet dealership, both in Hillsdale. Glenn was a former mayor of Hillsdale. He was a member of Hillsdale United Methodist Church, was a charter member and past commander of the Hooppole American Legion and was a member and past master of the Hooppole Masonic Lodge. He had held a private pilot's license. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and golf.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Jackie Urban, Rockton, Ill., Madeline Roselieb, Prophetstown, and Chris Cox, Mansfield, Ill.; sons, Pete Urban, Phoenix, Ariz., and John Urban, Moline; grandchildren, Teresa, Neil, Casey, Andrea, Angela, Christopher and Courtney; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Lisa Ballard
Lisa A. Ballard, 37, of Clinton, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Edward D. Bloss
Edward D. Bloss, 57, of Davenport died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at home.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at McGinnis-Chambers, Bettendorf. Visitation is one hour before services. Burial is in Oakridge cemetery , Princeton, Iowa.

Ed was born June 20, 1947, to Edward and June Frickelton Bloss.

Survivors are daughter, Amie Bloss, Bettendorf; mother and stepfather, June and Bob Grip, DeWitt, Iowa; brother, David, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; niece, Cathy Mohr, nephews, Anthony Mohr, William Mohr, all Bettendorf; special friends, Cindy Harkey and Brian Simmons, Davenport.

John Brown
John A. Brown, 58, of Conyers, Ga., formerly of Bettendorf, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Rockland Hospital, Conyers.

Arrangements are pending at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf.
