Linda Weindruch
Linda S. Weindruch, Esq., attorney, law school lecturer, noted Iowa tax authority, and advocate for the rights of disabled Americans, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, in Davenport, where she lived and practiced law.

The funeral will be held on Sunday, Oct. 10, 11 a.m., at the Tri City Jewish Center, 2715 30th St, Rock Island. Burial will be in Rock Island Hebrew cemetery . Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family with arrangements.

In 1994, Ms. Weindruch was presented the Iowa State Bar Association President's Award in recognition for her work involving the passage of the Iowa Taxpayers' Procedural Bill of Rights. As chair of the State Bar Association's Taxation Section, Ms. Weindruch worked with the Iowa Department of Revenue, the governor's office, and members of the House and Senate for passage of the bill, which was legislative recognition of certain fundamental procedural rights to which all taxpayers of the state of Iowa were entitled.

In 2004, Iowa Governor Thomas Vilsak appointed Ms. Weindruch a member of the state's Vocational Rehabilitation Council. She served as a member of the board of directors of the Iowa Taxpayers Association. She was involved in the state Republican party.

Ms. Weindruch was a 1983 graduate of Drake University Law School with Honors, Order of Coif. She received her LL.M. Taxation from New York University School of Law in 1988. She received her B.A. from St. Ambrose College, Davenport.

Ms. Weindruch is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Weindruch of Davenport; her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Weindruch of Washington, D.C.; her nephew, Emmett Weindruch of Boston, Mass.; her nieces, Nancy and Louisa of Washington, D.C.; and her beloved dogs Kukla and Stella.

Pallbearers include Lee Blumberg, Ira Fertel, Irwin Friedman, Jeffrey Goldstein, David Levin, Brent Michelson, Howard Press, Richard Saltzman, Emmett Weindruch and Michael Weindruch .

Honorary pallbearers include Jay Gellerman, Bernard Goldstein, Mort Kaplan, Harrison Kavensky, Martin Rich, Norman Rich, Victor Rothbart, Jerry Spector, Bernard Weindruch and Sam Gordon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to National Multiple Sclerosis Society https://www.nationalmssociety.org/

Janet Clark
Janet G. Clark, 84, of Rock Island died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Paula De Martelaere
Paula De Martelaere, 97, a resident of St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at the center.

Private services will be Saturday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. There is no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center.

The former Paula Van Landegem was born June 21, 1907, in Lens, France, a daughter of Joseph and Camilla Serlet Van Landegem. She married Marcel De Martelaere on Sept. 14, 1926, in Ghent, Minn. He died Feb. 25, 1984.

Mrs. De Martelaere worked at the former International Harvester Corp. Farmall Works, Rock Island, for 29 years. She retired in 1972.

Survivors include daughters and a son-in-law, Alice and Hugh Epperson, and Georgene Sivertsen, all of Rock Island; son and daughter-in-law, David and Janet De Martelaere, Romeo, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews, including her special niece and her husband, Diane and Tom Simcox, East Moline. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.

Carol Burdick
Carol C. Burdick, 86, of Moline died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with the Rev. A. Parker Lewis III officiating. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hope United Church of Christ, Moline.

The former Carol Christine Axell was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Moline, the daughter of Carl and Lilly Ern Axell. She married Robert K. Burdick on Dec. 10, 1938, in Davenport. He died Sept. 24, 2001.

She was switchboard operator at Sears in Moline for 18 years, retiring in 1978. She previously worked for Illinois Bell Telephone and Wheelock Drug Store.

She was an active member of Hope United Church of Christ, Moline, where she was a member of the Esther Circle and the Visitation Committee. She had been a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and belonged to the Rippers knitting group. She enjoyed flower arranging, crafts, knitting and word puzzles.

Carol is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Curtis LeGrand, Bettendorf; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Burdick, Moline; four grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Rose Ehrecke, Robin and Erick Trimble, Luanne and Tom Gritton, and Tracy and Greg Reitan; four great-grandchildren, Tucker Gritton, Nicole Guenther, Eli Trimble and Cody Reitan; and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Gwen Axell, Yakima, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, Gary Burdick, and her parents.

Robert Poston
Robert E. Poston, 61, of Moline died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hope United Church of Christ, Moline, with the Rev. A. Parker Lewis III officiating. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorial donations may be given to United Church of Christ.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline.

Robert Ellison Poston was born Feb. 15, 1943, in Moline, the son of Richard H. and Shirley I. Ellison Poston. Robert was a graduate of Moline High School, class of 1961, and attended Black Hawk College.

He served in the United States Army during Vietnam.

Robert was employed at Foldcraft Company, in Kenyon, Minn., and at Harrington Signal, Moline, as a materials purchasing specialist. For the past several years, Robert has been taking care of his mother. He had become very active at Hope United Church of Christ were he currently was serving as vice president of the church council and attended the Men's Breakfast Group. Robert was a past president of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, and was a member of the Order of DeMolay, Moline. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed collecting Hummels.

Surviving family members include his mother, Shirley Poston, Moline; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Marcia Poston, Cedar Falls, Iowa; two nieces, Holly Fitzpatrick, East Moline, and Terri and Mark Fredricks, Rock Island; and three nephews, Jeff and wife, Jandy Poston, Rock Island, Dave Gross, Des Moines, Iowa, and Doug Gross, Woodstock, Ill. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard A. Poston.

Edward Fox
Funeral services for Edward J. Fox, 64, of Silvis will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Colona. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m.

Mr. Fox died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis. Memorials may be made to the family.

Edward Fox was born March 9, 1940, in Camp Grove, Ill., the son of Leo and Ada Mae Nellinger Fox. He married Sharon Palmer on Jan. 28, 1978, in Rock Island.

He had worked at Mills Chevrolet, Moline, for more than 30 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed his dog 'Rueger.' He was a loving husband and father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Fox, Silvis; sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Brown, Colorado, Cary and Mel Brown, Davenport; grandchildren, Audriauna and Jake; sisters and brother-in-law, Joan and Chuck Payton, Rock Island, Joyce Trask, Milan.

Sandra White
Sandra J. White, 62, of Silvis died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline.

James Lawson Jr.
James D. Lawson, Jr., 37, of League City, Texas, formerly of Moline and Coal Valley, died suddenly on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Clear Lake Medical Center, Webster, Texas.

Services are 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, and 10 a.m. Monday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, with the Rev. Michael Schaab and the Rev. Duane Jack officiating. Burial is in Coal Valley cemetery . Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to an education fund for his sons.

Jim was born March 11, 1967, in Rock Island, the son of James David and Carol Hauerwas Lawson. He graduated from Moline High School in 1985, and received a B.A. degree in computer science with a mathematics minor from St. Ambrose University, Davenport. He married Melinda Verscha on May 30, 1987, in Coal Valley.

Jim was an eighth-grade career and technical teacher and yearbook advisor at Creekside Intermediate School in League City. He previously taught at Edison Middle School in Houston, Texas. He coached football and track, and most enjoyed spending time with his sons fishing, camping and teaching them soccer.

Jim is survived by his wife, Melinda; two sons, Christopher and Matthew; his mother, Carol Lawson, Moline; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Mike VanDeVelde, Moline; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Berlinda Lawson, Belen, N.M.; aunts, Dorothy Onderbeke, Rock Island, and Edna Griffith, Golden, Colo.; uncles, Lloyd Lawson and his wife, Shelba, Coal Valley, Charles Kirby, Rock Island, and Harold Wells, Moline; and his wife's parents, Mary Ann and Richard Verscha, Coal Valley; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, both locally and across the country. He was preceded in death by his father, James David Lawson.

Richard Rugh
Richard H. Rugh, 83, of Coal Valley died Oct. 5, 2004, at his home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, with the Rev. Timothy Snart officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in Glennwood cemetery , Coal Valley, with military rites conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice or First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, where he was a member.

Richard was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Colona Township, Ill., to John and Bertha M. Miller Rugh. He married Carrol Trego on Nov. 19, 1941, in Rock Island.

Richard was employed as a maintenance supervisor for John Deere and Company, Moline, for 30 years. He retired in March of 1980.

Richard was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of the American Legion in Springfield, Ill. He also was a member of Scottish Rite and Coordinate Bodies Valley of Moline and Valley Lodge 547 AF & AM, Coal Valley.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Carrol, Coal Valley; son, Jack (Zaiton) Rugh, Falls Church, Va.; daughters, Susan (Ray) Stropes, Chilhowee, Mo., Christine Rugh, Coal Valley; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Jackie (Lon) Shattuck, Coal Valley; brother-in-law, Ralph (Betty) Kuhn, Coal Valley. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Kuhn.

J. Albert Carlson
Services for J. Albert 'Al' Carlson, 84, of Illinois City will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Andalusia, where he was a member. Burial will be in Drury-Reynolds cemetery , Drury Township.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church, with a wake service conducted at 4:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or to the Drury-Reynolds cemetery . Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Carlson died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine, Iowa.

Al was born Feb. 26, 1920, in rural Geneseo, the son of John A. and Hilma Nelson Carlson. Al married Jeanette Hamerlinck on June 5, 1941, in Milan. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 2003.

Al and Jeanette farmed all their married lives, first in the Milan area and then, for the last 48 years, in Illinois City. Al loved Holstein cattle and Duroc hogs and later started his own business, Carlson's Durocs.

Al also served many years as secretary for the former Mississippi Valley Milk Producer's Association and was, for most of his life, an avid racoon hunter.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Dave Becker, Rockford, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kay Carlson, Illinois City; grandchildren, Kris Williams, Kelly Muncie, Scott Carlson and Beau Carlson; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Darlene Nice, Milan. Mr. Carlson was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette, his parents; three grandsons; and a brother, Delbert Carlson.

Audrey Shaw
Audrey Shaw, 75, peacefully entered eternal rest surrounded by her family on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004.

A memorial service in celebration of her life was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church, 19 North Sixth St., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034, with Dr. Conrad Sharps officiating. A graveside service will be held in the near future at the Aledo cemetery . In lieu of flowers, gifts in Audrey's memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Trust Fund, or Northeast Florida Community Hospice 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.

She was born March 6, 1929, to George and Florence Thornton Bell, and grew up in Aledo. For many years, she lived in Cherry Hill, N.J., New York City, and Charlotte, N.C. and has been a resident of Amelia Island Plantation, Fla., for the past 15 years.

She touched many lives with her loving and caring nature and always placed the needs of others before her own. She gave her time graciously to many organizations over the years. She was on the Women's Committee, Lighthouse for the Blind in New York City. In Charlotte, N.C., she worked on the Arts and Science Council, was on the board of the Nature Museum, and served as president of Women's Auxiliary for the Mint Museum. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach, Fla., where she enjoyed being a part of Ruth Circle. In 2001, The American Cancer Society honored Audrey with an award in recognition of courage, determination and a positive attitude in fighting cancer.

Survivors (and spouses) are her husband of 53 years, Jim; her daughters, Terry (Broderick) Reynolds, Princeton, N.J., Kathy Hummer, Sewell, N.J. and Molly (Brian) Bunting, Princeton; her son, Kent (Debbie) Shaw, Cincinnati, Ohio; her grandchildren, Sarah and Evan Shaw, and Katie and Andrew Hummer; her sister-in-law, Dorrie Nicholson; nephews, Steve and Tom Shaw, San Diego, Calif.; and many friends.

Robert Fender
Funeral services for Robert Fender, 86, of Bettendorf will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christ's Family Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Christ's Family Church or the American Heart Association.

Mr. Fender died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at his home.

Robert was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Coe Township, Ill., the son of Harry and Clara Bisbing Fender. He married Barbara Blackwell DeDoncker Aug. 31, 1946. She died Nov. 8, 1991. He later married Jean Lander Frischkorn on Feb. 13, 1993, in Davenport.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was stationed in the Pacific Theatre. He retired from John Deere Spreader Works, East Moline, after more than 35 years of service. He was an active member of Christ's Family Church, Davenport. He had been a member of the Masons for over 60 years. He loved music and singing. He sang with the Silver Linings and the Golden Tones. He belonged to the Barber Shop SPEBSQSA. He loved gardening. But, above all, he loved his family.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Fender, Bettendorf; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John McClure, Atlanta, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Grace Fender, Washington, Ill.; stepdaughters and son-in-law, Nancy Ferguson, Morris, Ill., Karen and Mike Spurrier, LeClaire; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Gloria Frischkorn, Fairmount, Ill., Richard and Debbie Frischkorn, Suring, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Barbara Fender; three sisters; and three brothers.

Burton T. Taylor, 74, of Davenport died Wednsday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Manor Care Health Services, Davenport.

Mary Ann Harris
Mary Ann Harris, 84, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, with a Christian Wake service at 6 p.m. at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church.

Mary was born Dec. 24, 1919, in Quincy, Ill., the daughter of Albert and Delilah Roth Schepers. She married Lyle D. Harris Jan. 19, 1946, in Davenport. She was formerly employed as a circuit clerk at the Rock Island County Court House. In her later years, she and her husband owned Lyle's Donut Shop in Rock Island.

She is survived by six children, Louise Farrell, Susan Harris, JoEllen Kenney and Christine Morales, all of Rock Island, Mary Lynn Bruwene, Moline and Lyle D. Harris, Jr. of Rock Island; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alberta Kathmann.
