Memorial services for Carol J. Reiter, 51, Bettendorf, are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bettendorf Christian Church. Private graveside services and inurnment are at Pine Hill cemetery , Davenport. Arrangements are by Cunnick-Collins, Davenport.

She died Oct. 4, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

She was born March 13, 1953, to Gregory and Billie Bledsoe.

Surviving are her husband, William; daughter, Jessica Reiter-Flax, West Des Moines, Iowa; son, Jeffrey, Davenport; grandson, Brooks; sisters: Kelly Svetich, Davenport, and Karen Pearsall, Bettenndorf.

Mark Rydzewski
Services for Mark S. Rydzewski, 50, of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Burial will be in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island, with military honors conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to the Boy's Town of New York.

Mr. Rydzewski died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif.

Mark was born Dec. 27, 1953, in Kingston, N.Y., son of John B. and Frances Godlefski Rydzewski. Mark married Patricia Holst March 29, 1975, in Davenport. He later married Juli Hegg Kraus Sept. 12, 2000, in Davenport.

Mark earned his bachelor's degree from Baylor University. Mark was an electronic technician at LRC in Davenport, working there for 21 years.

Mark was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, during which he was held as a prisoner of war. Sgt. Rydzewski was highly decorated during his service to his country, receiving two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. Sgt. Rydzewski was also a member of the 834th Engineer Company of the Iowa National Guard, Davenport, leaving service in June 2002.

Mark was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was also active in coaching softball for the Hayes Dad's Club. Mark's other enjoyments were traveling to Mexico and California.

Survivors include his wife, Juli; sons, John Rydzewski, Davenport, Kristopher Rydzewski, currently serving with the 1st-503rd HQ Support Company attached to the 2nd Infantry Division in Iraq; stepsons, Jamison Kraus and Jonathan Kraus, both of Davenport; a sister and brothers, Veronica Rydzewski, Kingston, N.Y., Bill Rydzewski, Congers, N.Y., Wayne Rydzewski, Sessner, Fla.; and Paul Rydzewski, Sessner. Mark was a very loved and cherished member of his wife's family. They include his father- and mother-in-law, Hollis and Carole Hegg; brothers-in-law, Christopher and Timothy Hegg; sisters-in-law, Holly Martinez, Teresa Epstein, Lisa Kratz, Amy Maxwell; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents.

Donna Witters
Donna L. Witters, 96, of Davenport, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Home, Davenport.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery , Davenport. Memorials may be made to the Scott County Humane Society or to the Good Samaritan Home.

Donna was born May 6, 1908, in Monmouth, to Jesse and Francis Hoy Mitchell. She was united in marriage to Ed Lewis in 1926, and to that union was born a son, James, and a daughter, Patricia. She later married Val Witters in 1943, in Nashua, Iowa, and to that union was born a son, Terry Witters, and a stepson, Val Witters Jr. Val Sr. preceded her in death on May 13, 1963.

She had worked at the Arsenal and Nichols Wire and was the owner/operator of the Hob Nob Grill on Rockingham Road for 27 years, where her customers were like family. She enjoyed many years of square dancing, starting in 1966. She belonged to the Moose Ramblers, Do Si Do and Solo Steppers. She loved to travel with friends, creating many happy memories. She also enjoyed people, family and her beloved cat, KJ. She was active with CASI and the HyVee CRS Club.

Those left to honor her memory include daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Ray Jacobsen, Davenport; son, Terry Witters, Davenport; stepson and daughter-in-law, Val Witters Jr. and Arlene, Davenport; daughter-in-law and husband, Marcia (Lewis) and Milbert Westbrooks, Davenport; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Iris Bruington, Cameron, Ill.; and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, James Lewis; and brothers, Art and Jesse Jr.

Ruth L. Clement
Ruth Luella Clement, 100, of Rock Island, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Friendship Manor, Rock Island.

Graveside services will be held privately and interment will take place at Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island. The Rev. Steven Anderson will officiate. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 1820 5th Ave., Rock Island, or to the Friendship Manor Tree of Life, 1209 21st Ave., Rock Island.

Miss Clement was born July 28, 1904, in Rock Island, daughter of Edwin H. and Magdalene S. Bauder Clement. She was employed by Modern Woodmen of America, Rock Island, retiring in 1969.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rock Island, which she joined in 1919, and was a former church school teacher, superintendent of the Kindergarten Department, and a member of the Caring Committee. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and had served on the administrative board and history committee.

Miss Clement was the only living charter member of the Lend-A-Hand Circle of King's Daughters, which was organized in 1929. She was a member of the Silver Cross League, the In His Name Service League and the Rock Island Women's Club.

Survivors include second cousins, John Grosskopf, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Sherry Cook, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Marion `Doc' Shelton
Marion 'Doc' Shelton, 82, formerly of Rock Island, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Mesa, Ariz.

He retired in Arizona after working at IH Farmall for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a former member of First United Methodist Church, Rock Island. A 33rd-degree Mason, a Shriner, an avid bowler and golfer, he graduated from Rock Island High School, where he was a star athlete in track, holding the district record in the 880-yard dash for 20 years.

Survivors (and spouses) are two children, Larry (Beth), Grand Blanc, Mich., and Linda, Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Scott, Brynn, Eric and Jackie; great-grandson, Caleb. Doc and his wife of 55 years, Maxine, will be buried together in Veterans Memorial cemetery , Phoenix.

Susan Terronez Burge

Susan Terronez Burge, 40, of East Moline, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Rock Falls, with Monsignor Thomas Dzielak as celebrant. Burial will be at a later date at Calvary cemetery , Sterling. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls. A memorial in her memory to her children would be appreciated.

Susan was born Aug. 1, 1964, in Sterling, daughter of Manuel 'Rocky' and Mary Sierra Terronez. She attended Rock Falls schools and was a 1983 graduate of Rock Falls High School. She worked as a certified nurse's aide for 15 years. She attended Capri Cosmetology College, Davenport, and graduated as a massage therapist in 2002. She was employed recently with Hon Industries, Muscatine, Iowa, and at the Hair Affair, East Moline. She married Benny Garnett in Clinton, Iowa. She later married Harold Burge in Newton, Iowa.

Surviving are her two children, Rijeh and Regis Garnett, both at home; her mother, Mary Terronez Ambriz, Rock Falls; her sister, Victoria Houston, Clinton; her brothers (and spouses), Victor (Chris) Terronez, Sterling, and Joe (Debbie) Terronez, Moline; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Thomas C. Terronez and Gerald A. Terronez.

Raymundo `Chief' Ayala
Raymundo 'Chief' Ayala, 76, of Milan, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. Burial with military honors presented by American Legion Posts 569/200 and VFW Post 1303 will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Raymundo was born Dec. 9, 1927, in Hidalgo, Texas, son of Gilberto Ayala and Anita Aveldano Ayala. He married Mary Villaneuva on Oct. 18, 1948, in Brownsville, Texas.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Raymundo retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1978 after 29 years of service.

He was a 32nd-degree Mason and member of Rock Island Lodge 658 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite and Coordinate Bodies, Valley of Moline, and Medinah Shrine Temple, Chicago.

Surviving are his wife, Mary, Milan; son and daughter-in-law, Carlos and Linda Ayala, Vincenza, Italy; grandchildren, Rebecca Green, Carla Money and her husband, Brad, and Michael Ayala; nine great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eliseo and Mararita Ayala, Elias and Mary Ayala, Isaias Ayala, David and Maria Ayala, Samuel and Maria Ayala, Steven and Sara Ayala; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Sarah and J. David Amaya, Beatric Loya, Diana Nangle and Noemi and Catarino Galicia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter.

Olga K Gustafson
Olga K. Gustafson, 86, of Milan, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at her home.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and a private graveside inurnment service will be held at Pleasant View cemetery , Kewanee. Dr. Paul Isom will officiate. Memorials may be directed to donor's choice. Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gustafson was born July 8, 1918, in Sheffield, Ill., daughter of Joseph and Sandie Bohart Kildow. She married Lavern A. Gustafson Feb. 9, 1944, in Kewanee. He preceded her in death July 14, 1967.

Survivors (and spouses) are daughter, Jane (Jack) McNaught, Peoria, Ill.; two grandchildren, Jeff (Angie) McNaught, Jill (Carl) Enchelmayer; and four great-grandchildren.

Lyle C. Hart
Lyle C. Hart, 73, of Riverdale, Neb., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Kearney. Visitation is after the service at the church.

He was born Aug. 2, 1931, in Alliance, Neb. to Clarence and Hazel Hart. He married LeJean Dow in 1960.

Mr. Hart is survived by his wife, LeJean, Riverdale; sons, Tom, Glendale, Calif., Scott, Geneseo; daughter, Jenny, Austin, Texas; granddaughter, Jessica Rachelle Hart, Paris, France. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Helen Scott
Helen Maxine Scott, 87, a resident of Galena Stauss Nursing Home, Galena, Ill., formerly of Galva, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the home.

Her body was donated to science. A service will be held later. Rux Funeral Home, Galva, is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Sept. 6, 1917, in Galva, to Olof and Hattie McBride Mortenson. She married John Scott May 25, 1951. He died in 1996.

She lived in Galva most of her life, where she was known as 'The Old Bag Lady, ' referring to her hobby and art of restoring and embroidering old feed bags with their advertising slogans.

Survivors are her daughter, Krisceda Murdock, Galena; sister, Betty Rapier, Galva; grandsons, Scott Murdock, Denver, Colo., and Toben Murdock, Galena; and three great-grandchildren.

Jamie `J-Bird' Erickson

Jamie Lee 'J-Bird' Erickson, 21, of Davenport, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Genesis West, Davenport.

Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, with visitation starting at 11 a.m. Burial is in Pine Hill cemetery , Davenport.

He was born in 1983 to David Erickson and Julie Spears.

Survivors are parents, David Erickson, Julie Carrillo, Davenport; siblings, Angela Wagner, Davenport, Danny Jasper, Sioux Falls, S.D.; stepbrother, Travis Prescott, Moline; grandparents, Sandra Gardner-Adams, Moulton, Iowa, Wayne Erickson, Davenport, Paul Gardner, Alpha.

Edna Forest
Edna E. Forest, 68, of Rock Island died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at her home. Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Joyce Gillis
Joyce Elaine Gray Gillis, 59, of Rock Island, was called home by God, Our Heavenly Father, the Creator of all things, Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, while she slept.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 1222 7th Ave., Moline, with visitation and viewing of the remains one hour prior to the service. The wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Committal of her earthly body will be at Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island. Esterdahl Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Joyce E. Gillis was born Oct. 28, 1945, in Marion, Ind., the daughter of Mr. James Clarence Grays and Mrs. S. Marie Cole-Gray. She graduated from Moline High School in 1963. She married Dr. David H. Gillis of Middletown, Ohio. She graduated from Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio, with a B.A. degree in sociology and psychology in 1967. In 1972, she received her M.A. degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a reading specialist. She attended Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tenn., Black Hawk College in Moline and Marycrest College in Davenport during which she acquired 45 hours above her master's degree with areas of focus in education, speech pathology and psychology. Mrs. Gillis worked approximately 30 years in the Rock Island School District in several capacities such as teacher of English, literature, reading, title I reading and psychology at various grade levels. She began her teaching career in Hamilton, Ohio, at the elementary level. She worked three years in the Nashville-Davidson County School District in Nashville. She assisted and implemented a preschool program in the Middletown School District, Middletown, Ohio, where she also substituted as a teacher while working on her master's degree.

She confessed her belief in God at an early age at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Moline where she was a member all of her life and held a variety of positions and duties at various times, such as Steward Trustee, Missionary Worker, Sunday school teacher, cook, dishwasher, choir member and fundraiser. She studied biblically with Pastor Arnold Murray on Shepherd's Chapel almost daily and RBC Ministries, Grand Rapids, Mich. She enjoyed learning, teaching, reading, singing, dancing, music, traveling and doing geneology.

Surviving family members include daughters, Jonnea Marie Gillis, Moline, Dr. Jacinta Irene Gillis, East Moline; a son, William David Gillis, East Moline; three grandchildren, Malachi James Robinson-Gillis, Ja'Cara Elaine Gillis and Jalen Henry Gillis-Ganaway; sisters, Mrs. Suella Johnson, Springfield, Ill., Ms. June Harris, Detroit, Mich., Ms. Earline Lee, New Orleans, La., Ms. Alberta Free, Detroit; a brother, Hudson Harris, Davenport; brothers-in-law, Joseph Otis Davis, Chicago, Dail Rice, Rock Island, Coolidge Johnson, Springfield, Ill., Jesse Johnson, Cleveland; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by parents, James Clarence Grays and S. Marie Cole-Gray-Harris; stepfather, Hudson Harris; maternal grandparents, Talton and Anna Cole; paternal grandparents, Amos and Lela Gray; steppaternal grandparents, Neil and Gertrude Harris; sisters, Yvonne Johnson, Hysonja Harris Davis, Jo Ann Harris and Oleva Calvert Rice; sister-in-law, Rose Hunter Harris; surrogate parents, Aunt Johnie Mac and Uncle Matthew Parker Sr.; plus many additional beloved relatives and friends.

All memorials are to be made to St. Paul A.M.E. Church in lieu of flowers to exemplify the love God has for us and to assist in the spread of the Good News regarding God's gift to us so that all might be saved. 'A thanks goes to all who touched my life as I scurried through with both hands in God's hands and He directing the way.' J.E.G.
