Dorothy Van De Gejuchte
Dorothy M. Van De Gejuchte, 75, of Rock Island, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan. Burial will be at Rock Island National cemetery . Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice.

Mrs. Van De Gejuchte was born April 28, 1929, in Milan, the daughter of Ernest and Lula Mary Cochron Jahns. She married William M. Van De Gejuchte Nov. 1, 1949, in Rock Island. He died May 8, 1988.

Along with being a homemaker, in earlier years, Dorothy and her husband owned and operated Beardsley Printing, Rock Island. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan. She enjoyed fishing, reading and cross stitching.

Dorothy is survived by a son and his spouse, Steve and Nancy Van De Gejuchte, Milan; granddaughter, Kristy Hollars; sisters, Mary Van De Gejuchte, Milan, and Louise Newman, Rock Island. She was preceded by her parents and brother, David Jahns.

Julia Valdez
Julia H. Valdez, 78, of East Moline, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline.

Arrangements are pending at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

Myra Mueller
Myra M. Mueller, 96, of Milan, formerly of Taylor Ridge, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Taylor Ridge. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran cemetery . Memorials may be made to the church.

Mrs. Mueller was born April 17, 1908, in rural Rock Island County, daughter of Ernest and Emma Unterkircher Seitz. She married Donald Mueller Feb. 26, 1930, at Zion Lutheran Church. He died Dec. 9, 1995.

Along with being a homemaker, Myra was very active in the church. She was the church organist for many years and was a member of the Dorcas Society of the church. She enjoyed sending letters and cards to family and friends and growing and arranging flowers from her flower garden.

Myra is survived by her daughter and spouse, Vivian and Richard Geisler, Rock Island; grandchildren, Paula Nelson, Vicki Bull, Colleen Bestian, Kevin and Judy Geisler; great-grandchildren, Penny Meskan, Jay Nelson, Nicholas and Mitch Bull, Christopher and Carrie Bestian; brother, Elmer Seitz, Taylor Ridge; and daughter-in-law, Pat Mueller, Aledo. She was preceded in death by a son, Llewllyn Mueller; sister, Elsie Seitz; and brother, George Seitz.

Albert Banks
Albert H. Banks, 87, of Aledo, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, with the Rev. Michael Kincaid officiating. Private Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may greet the family one hour prior to services at the funeral home where memorials may be left to the First Baptist Church in Aledo or Parkinson's Research Foundation.

He was born April 11, 1917, in Geneseo, a son of Thomas and Orpha Santee Banks. Albert received his education from Muscatine schools and married June Beutler. He later married Frances Hyett Dec. 19, 1970, in Moline.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1978 where he was employed as a machine tool operator.

His memberships include the American Legion Fallerans Post 121, Aledo, Muscatine American Legion and the NRA.

Albert enjoyed gardening and was an avid outdoorsman and outstanding woodcarver.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Sandra Banks, Muscatine; a daughter-in-law, Pat Banks, Livermore, Calif.; stepsons, Claris Hyett, Granite Falls, Wash., Lennis Hyett, Aledo, Larry Hyett, Van cleave, Miss.; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Icel Strabala, Mesa, Ariz., Mildred Boyd, Fort Mill, S.C.; and a brother, William Werner, Oskaloosa, Iowa. His parents; a son, Thomas; three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death

Steven Goodnight
Steven R. Goodnight, 48, of Illinois City died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan.

Elsie Horn
Elsie M. Horn, 89, of Morrison, formerly of Cordova, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Pleasant View Home, Morrison.

Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Union cemetery , Newton, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The former Elsie Mae Gibson was born March 12, 1915, in Newton, the daughter of John and Ethel Hardenbrook Gibson. She married Hollis Horn July 20, 1932, in Newton. He died Aug. 1, 1998.

She had been a chef at the former Shamrock Restaurant, Cordova. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, sewing and fishing. She always decorated her yard for Christmas, winning several awards. She was very devoted to her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Brewer, Fulton; a son, William J. Horn, Lodi, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild. A son, Robert; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and two sisters, preceded her in death.

Obert Hout
Obert 'Gene' Hout, 77, Colona died Dec. 3, 2004, at Forest Hill, East Moline.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Family Funeral Services, Colona. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

He was born Jan. 1, 1927, in St. Elmo, Ill., to Samual and Mabel Bonner Hout. He married Dolly Prior May 3, 1947, in Springfield, Ill.

He worked out of the Laborer's Union Local 309, Rock Island. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Dolly; children, Cheryl (David) Shady, East Moline, Connie (Don) Matson, Clarksburg, Ohio, Michelle (Denny) Benson, East Moline, Larry (Val) Hout, Milan, Donald (Kerry) Hout, Geneseo, and Marty Hout, Moline; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Roger Lawson
Roger A. Lawson, 58, of Orion, died Dec. 4, 2004, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Arrangements are pending at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion.

William Robinson
Dr. William Robinson, 89, of Morrison died Dec. 5, 2004, at Morrison Community Hospital.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bosma-Renkes, Morrison. Burial is in Grove Hill cemetery , Morrison. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. to service time.

He was born Nov. 7, 1915, in Nashville, Ill., to William and Catherine Neill Robinson. He married Virginia Mathes in 1939 in Greencastle, Ind. She died in 2002.

He taught science and coached basketball in Shawneetown, Ill., and later Cambridge. In 1947, he joined his brother in the practice of medicine in Prophetstown. He served a term as Whiteside County Coroner.

Survivors are daughter, Ann Damerow, Thomson, Ill.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded by a daughter, Jane Anderson.

John Griebel
Services for John Griebel, 81, Bettendorf, formerly of LeClaire, are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the River Catholic, Princeton/LeClaire. Burial is in Holy Family cemetery , Davenport.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, and 10 a.m. to services at the church.

He died Dec. 4, 2004, at Bettendorf Healthcare. He was born in 1923. He married Jean Kruse in 1946. She died in 1998.

Survivors are children, Mary Neece, Davenport, and Joseph, Cheyenne, Wyo.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Joyce Gillis
Joyce E. Gillis, 59, of Rock Island, died Dec. 3, 2004, at her home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's AME Church, Moline, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to service time. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Paul `Lefty' Wendland
Services for Paul L. 'Lefty' Wendland, 73, of Rock Island, will be 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Rock Island High School Fieldhouse. Private burial will be Thursday in Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island.

Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family or to the Rock Island/Milan Education Foundation.

Mr. Wendland died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at his home.

Lefty was born July 28, 1931, in Davenport, son of Raymond and Florence McCubbin Wendland. He married Marilyn J. Wright Aug. 10, 1952, in Rock Island.

He worked in sales for Service Automotive Warehouse, a division of Lohse. At the time of his retirement in 1994, he was vice president of Power Unlimited, also a division of Lohse. Lefty later worked for the Rock Island Parks Department at Highland Springs and Saukie golf courses. He also was the public address announcer for all sporting events at Rock Island High School and for several years was the official scorekeeper for basketball.

Lefty was an avid golfer and coached youth baseball for more than 20 years. His love for the Rock Island Rocks was only surpassed by his love for his family.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; children (and their spouses), Geri (Dick) Mosenfelder, Jody (Jack) Leiby, Mike Wendland and Jeff (Jennifer) Wendland, all of Rock Island, and Kelley (Glen) Fisher, Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Cynthia King, Beaverton, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Vern Misel.

Carl `Zeke' Zwicker Jr.
Carl J. 'Zeke' Zwicker Jr., 83, of Rock Island, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the Rock Island/Milan Education Foundation or to the Rock Island/Milan Booster Club.

Mr. Zwicker was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Rock Island, son of Carl and Gwendollan Edwards Zwicker Sr. He was a 1940 graduate of Rock Island High School and served as the class president. Zeke was a member of the 1938 Rock Island High School basketball team that was a 'Sweet 16' competitor in the state basketball tournament. Zeke married Jacqueline Ann Brown Mar. 24, 1945, in Rock Island. She died in 1993.

He worked for Deere & Co. for 41 years. Zeke was the Adminstrator of Benefit Plans and Service at the John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, when he retired in 1981. He had three principles which he followed and encouraged others in the personnel department to practice while at Deere: take care of your employees when they leave, follow the 'Golden Rule' and laugh when there was something humorous.

He was a World War II Army veteran. Zeke was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, given a lifetime honorary membership to UAW Local 865, was a member of the Rock Island Elks and former board member of the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center. Zeke was the Grand Marshall of the Rock Island High School Homecoming Parade.

Zeke was an avid Rock Island High School sports fan and booster. He was a lifelong athlete and enjoyed jogging for many years. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Zeke also liked watching and feeding the birds and squirrels that visited the feeders in his yard.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Gary Kennelly, Dianna Gilhooly, Kay Bennett Maxwell and James Maxwell, all of Rock Island; a son, Mark Zwicker, Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Chad Andrew and Amy Kennelly, Kristin Holmberg and her husband, Brian, Jeff Conover, Paul Carl Bennett, Trent Thomas Bennett, Amber Ann Bailey and her husband, Chad, Savannah and Skylar Joseph Zwicker; great-grandchildren, Andrew and William Holmberg, Dawson Bennett and Brittanee Strawn. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a grandson, Andrew Patrick Kennelly.

Gene Crooks
The Rev. Gene W. Crooks, 73, of Abrams, Wis., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, in Green Bay, Wis.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today and also from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Ashland Ave., Green Bay. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Shive officiating. Blaney Funeral Home, Green Bay, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.

He was born March 1, 1931, in Oconto, Wis., and was raised in Green Bay. His parents were Stanley Crooks and Mae Porter Crooks Norgaard.

He graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1949 and later graduated from Beloit College. He earned his master's degree from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (Presbyterian Church USA) in 1964. The Rev. Crooks' first church assignment was in Marengo, Iowa. He served as a Presbyterian minister for 40 years, serving churches in Iowa, South Dakota, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Rev. Crooks also ministered as director of substance-abuse centers in Iowa, Illinois and New Mexico. His most recent assignment was as parish associate at First Presbyterian Church in Green Bay. The Rev. Crooks was honorably retired from the Winnebago Presbytery.

All who knew Gene knew he was an avid Packers fan. He enjoyed the northwoods of Wisconsin and the Boundary Waters, and he enjoyed candlemaking. He was also an environmentalist and loved to travel.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; a son and daughter-in-law, Gregg W. and Barbara Crooks, Moline; two daughters and sons-in-law, Loreilyn and Steve Rowe, Kansas, Ginger and Tom Rasmussen, Iowa; a foster son, Dave Davis and his fiancee, Shelly, Florida; three stepchildren and their husbands, Susan Anderson and her fiance, Mike, Minnesota, Julie and Mike Dally, Minnesota, Vicki and Capt. James Hayes, Texas; 14 grandchildren; his aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Arthur Norgaard.

The Crooks family wishes to express their gratitude to the deacons at First Presbyterian Church and the staff of the ICU at Aurora BayCare.

Dirk DeReu
Dirk F. DeReu, 49, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Moline, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater.

Dirk was born on Dec. 19, 1954, son of Lloyd E. DeReu and Juanita DeReu Johnson. He married Rita Hughes on May 7, 1977. She died on Nov. 6, 1991.

Survivors (and spouses) include his mother, Juanita, Delrico, Fla.; daughters, Kristina (Eric) Sherman and Amy DeReu, both of Lutz, Fla; grandson, Eric Stanley Sherman, Lutz; brother, Michael (Christine) Johnson, Clearwater; sisters, Connie (Bill) Queenan, Bradenton, Fla., Sharon (Frank) Gripp, Annawan, Ill., Pamela (Dennis) Kolwey, Reno, Nev., Joline (Kevin) Williams, Fairview Heights, Ill. He was preceded in death by his wife, father and stepfather, Elmer Johnson.

George Hall Jr.
George Hall Jr., 88, of Moline, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis.

Private services will be on Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Burial is at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, or The Parkinson's Foundation.

George was born April 18, 1916, in Moline, son of George and Helen Swanson Hall. He married Frances Marion Dorman on June 3, 1939, at Trinity Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death in 1990. He married Geraldine Hughes in August 1991 in Muscatine, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 2000. He was an industrial relations manager for Deere & Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1976.

Mr. Hall was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. He was also a member of the Moline Vikings, the Moose Lodge and the Moline Elks. He was also enlisted in the National Guard. In his younger years, he was a caddie at the Arsenal Golf Club. George enjoyed fishing and playing golf. He loved to travel, play cards and dance. He mostly loved spending time with his family.

Survivors (and spouses) include his son, Thomas (Mary) Hall, Moline; two grandsons, Thomas B. (Susan) Hall, Moline, John C. Hall, Moline; three stepsons, Jim (Carol) Hughes, Tennessee, Doug (Deb) Hughes, Muscatine, Tom (Karen) Hughes, California; and one great-granddaughter, Chloe Hall. He was preceded in death by his three sisters and his son, Dr. Stephen Hall.
