Charles Schebler

Charles G. Schebler, 76, Davenport, died peacefully at his residence Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing, which followed a brief illness and battle with cancer.

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Schebler, prominent Davenport businessman and life-long contributor to local service organizations and the community, will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Private family burial will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery , Davenport. The family invites you to join them for a prayer service today at 4 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, where visitation will continue immediately following the prayer service until 8 p.m. Memorials can be made to Handicapped Development Center Endowment Fund, St. John Vianney Catholic Church Building Fund or to Genesis Hospice of VNA.

Charles, who was born Aug. 24, 1928, in Davenport and lived for the majority of his life in Davenport, was educated at St. Joseph's Grade School and St. Ambrose Academy, class of 1946. Following in his grandfather's and father's footsteps, Charles took up the sheet metal trade. In 1950, along with three of his brothers, he established and built the Schebler Company, in which, for 30 years, he held the positions of president of the 3810 Corporation and vice president of the Schebler Company. He retired in 1980 after selling the business which, to this day, continues to bear the family name.

As an astute and respected businessman, Charles shared his time and many talents to benefit the advancement of the community and a number of Davenport service organizations. In 1959, Charles became president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was repeatedly honored for his outstanding service to the Jaycees and the city of Davenport, receiving the Davenport Junior Chamber of Commerce 'Outstanding Jaycee'award in 1957, and twice receiving the Davenport Jaycees' 'Distinguished Service Award, ' once in 1960, and again in 1962. In 1967 he was recognized by the National Director of the Iowa Jaycees as 'Annual Boss of the Year' and cited for his community activities and support of the Jaycees' programs. In 1975, the Davenport Chamber of Commerce honored Charles with their 'Director Service Award, ' in acknowledgement of the 'outstanding community service he contributed for the promotion and protection of the civic, commercial and industrial advancement of Davenport.'

In spite of his many pressing business responsibilities, in 1957 and 1958 Charles volunteered six months of evenings and weekends to help clear the grounds and construct the Camp Fire Girls Summer Camp-Camp Ses-Kome.

Charles' dedication to the community once again was demonstrated through his leadership in taking on a serious community challenge from 1960-63. At that time, no educational facility existed for 72 handicapped children who were stranded by the state and federal governments; no laws existed to provide funding for this much-needed school. Therefore, Charles requested the assistance of Bob Martin, who collaborated with him in garnering the support and manpower of the local trade unions, to build the Linwood Cerebral Palsy School for the handicapped. Companies throughout the Quad-Cities, including the Schebler Company, united as never before, donating countless man-hours and materials to complete this highly complex project on a very tight schedule. The school was completed one week before the start of the 1963-64 school year, with virtually no financial assistance other than that provided by the generosity of the local trades. Charles and his allies also were successful in gaining the support of the Scott County School Board in furnishing six teachers for the school and securing financial support from the United Way/Community Chest to cover its operating expenses. In 1963 Charles received the 'Humanitarian Service Award' from United Cerebral Palsy of America for 'outstanding service and instilling hope in America's Cerebral Palsy Children and Adults.' It wasn't until 16 years after the school opened that the Iowa legislature finally passed laws which brought funding to the school. The proceeds from the eventual sale of the school building were turned over and are managed by the Davenport Area Foundation, and have continued to benefit the community for years.

Never one to sit by idly, over a ten year period after Charles' so-called 'retirement' from the Schebler Company, he dedicated more than 9000 hours of volunteer service to C.A.S.I. (Center for Active Seniors). In addition to serving as a member of the C.A.S.I. Board of Directors, beginning in 1991, Charles volunteered his time and expertise to repair, upgrade, remodel and maintain the facility and grounds. As chairman of the building committee and building project manager, Charles was responsible for the planning and implementation of projects that allowed C.A.S.I. to meet the ever-increasing needs of seniors in the community for over a decade. In 1996, and again in 1999, Charles was presented with the 'Dr. John Sunderbruch Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service' on behalf of C.A.S.I. In 2001, Charles received C.A.S.I.'s '10 Years of Dedicated Service' award.

As the summer of 2001 approached, Charles decided to start taking his retirement more seriously, and has since dedicated his time to his wife, family, friends and his favorite pastimes, golf and fishing.

Charles Schebler's contributions to Davenport, the city in which he was born, established his business and raised five children, will continue to have a long-lasting impact for innumerable Quad-Cities families he will never meet -- but were in his heart -- as he honored his God-given gifts by dedicating his service whenever a need presented itself.

Mr. Schebler is survived by his wife, June Schebler, Davenport; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Jerry Fuller, Davenport, Michelle and Paul Haas, Cedar Rapids, Jeanne and Cal Little, Princeton, and Charlene Schebler, Davenport; a son, Fredrick 'Rick' Schebler, Davenport; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; stepdaughters (and spouses), Catherine Gaines, Davenport, Linda (Walt) Wells, Holton, Kan., and Cheryl (James) Van DeVoorde, Meriden, Kan.; a sister, Marie Brus, Walcott, Iowa; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Pat Schebler, Ed and Roberta Schebler, and Tom and Jeanne Schebler, all Davenport; sisters-in-law, Bernice Schebler, Helen Schebler and Rita Schebler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Joseph, John, Richard and Robert. May they rest in peace.
