Bernice Brock
Bernice Brock, 65, of Viola, died of natural causes Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.

There will be no services or visitation. Cremation rites will be accorded. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

She was born June 29, 1939, in Fort Smith, Ark., the daughter of John Edgar 'Arkie' and Stella Blevins Medlen. She was raised and educated in Arkansas. She married Harvey Brock on June 29, 1979, in Milan.

She worked as a housekeeper at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley, for 36 1/2 years. She was a member of Rock Island Moose Lodge No. 190.

Survivors (and spouses) are her husband; sons, Chuck (Karen) Brock, Galesburg, and Brien (Eva) Brock, Moline; daughter, Mary (Ron) Duncalf, Alpha; grandchildren, Justine (Jennifer) Myers, Wyoming, Ill., Jona Myers of Moline, Katie (Don) Hoteling, Viola; five great-grandchildren, Zachery Osborne, Viola, Jayson, Sean and Austin Hoteling, Viola, William Myers, Wyoming; sister, Opal (Don) Cable, Milan; niece, Carolyn (Randy) Bruce, Milan; nephew, John Myers. She was preceded in death by parents and an infant sister.

August `Gus' DeDecker
August J. 'Gus' DeDecker, 97, of Atkinson, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St.Anthony's Catholic Church, Atkinson. Monsignor Don Fitzpatrick will celebrate. Burial will be in St. Anthony's cemetery . Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, where the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be left to the August DeDecker Memorial Fund.

Gus was born on Aug. 13, 1907, in Mineral, Ill., the son of Peter and Leona VanLaere DeDecker. He married Alma VanDersnick May 30, 1929, in Atkinson. She died in January 1981.

Gus, in his early years, worked at the Rock Island Lines railroad. He later worked for the state of Illinois Highway Department where he was proud to say that he plowed snow in the winter storm of 1935. He then was employed at the John Deere Harvestor Co. for a few years. In 1945, he purchased the Paquer Hardware Store in Atkinson and started the August DeDecker Hardware Store. This career purchase led to the following of four generations to own and operate the DeDecker's Hardware Store in Atkinson. The store still remains a fixture in downtown Atkinson run by the DeDecker's. Gus still was helping at the store when he was 90 years old.

He was member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, a charter member of the Atkinson Fire Department, charter member of the Atkinson Kiwanis Club. He truly enjoyed going for coffee at the Atkinson Sale Barn, playing rolle bolle, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include two sons and spouses, Richard and Marilyn DeDecker, Atkinson, Darrell and Henrietta DeDecker, Atkinson; nine grandchildren, Corey Junior, Randy Junior, Mark, Craig, Neal, Drew, Darren, Dane DeDecker, and Ann Ator; 17 great-granchildren; sister, Fran VanOpdorp, Atkinson; brother, Peter DeDecker, Davenport. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Junior in 1986, five brothers and two sisters.

Mary Edmund
Mary I. Edmund, 81, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Cambridge, died Dec. 3, 2004, at her home.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Cambridge in June, with inurnment in the Rosedale cemetery , Cambridge. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge United Methodist Church. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Cambridge, is assisting the family with local arrangements.

The former Mary Anderson was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Cambridge, the daughter of Arthur H. 'Jonas' and Helen A. Bennett Anderson. She was educated in Cambridge schools. Her marriage to Curtis Edmund took place on June 14, 1941, in Winchester, Tenn. The couple settled in Cambridge after World War II.

Mary worked as a bookkeeper in the Edmund Grocery Store for several years. The couple retired and moved to Mesa in 1970. She was a former member of the Cambridge United Methodist Church and enjoyed the Chicago Cubs, gardening and her family.

Surviving are her husband, Curtis, Mesa; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Steve Pyevich, Hampton; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Kathy Edmund, Fort Collins, Colo., and Rodger and Judy Edmund, Mesa. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Adam and Abby Edmund, Amy Edmund Hernandez, Steven, Brian, and Thomas Pyevich, Amanda, Angie, and Matthew Edmund; five great-grandchildren, Steven, Alex, and Lily Pyevich, Morgan and Skylar Edmund; and a brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Betty Anderson, Cambridge. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Shirley; and a brother, Alan.

Raymond Hanson
Raymond G. Hanson Sr., 86, of Kewanee, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee.

Phyllis Morris
Phyllis Morris, 84, of Alexis, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Alexis United Presbyterian Church. Burial is in Alexis cemetery . Visitation is after 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hoover-Hall, Alexis, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials go to the church.

She was born Feb. 20, 1920, north of Aledo on the Reaber Homestead. She was the daughter of Virgil and Minola Mayhew Reaber Burgess. She married Eugene H. Morris July 26, 1939.

She dedicated her life to her husband and children.

Surviving are her husband; sons, Dennis, Cocoa Beach, Fla., and K. Jeffrey, Galesburg; daughter, Marilyn Morris, Galesburg; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; half-brother, Donald E. Burgess, Girard, Ill.

Charles Ruzas
Charles A. Ruzas 77, of Kewanee, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Kewanee Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee.

Hazel Welsh
Hazel M. Welsh, 79, of Hampton, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at home.

Graveside services and burial will be in Sunny Side cemetery , Milton, Iowa, at a later date. Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron, is in charge of arrangements.

The former Hazel Marie Carlson was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Milton, the daughter of Hilmer and Florence Black Carlson. She married Tony F. Welsh on Nov. 15, 1946, in Milton. He died on Aug. 18, 1999.

She had been a swimming instructor for the YWCA, Rock Island, for 20 years. She also had been employed at the Rock Island Arsenal for three years during World War II. She was a member of the Daughters of Mokanna. She enjoyed golfing, swimming, her beautiful views of the Mississippi River and especially taking care of her lawn.

Survivors include a sister, JoAnn Rood, Memphis, Mo.; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Betty Carlson, Hampton; and four nieces.

Elfriede Bartosch
Elfriede Bartosch, 81, formerly of Davenport, died Feb. 4, 2005, at Iowa Masonic Nursing Home, Bettendorf.

Services are 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Runge, Davenport. Visitation is one hour prior to service time. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park cemetery .

She was born June 11, 1923, to Paul and Martha Pietzonka. She married Ed Bartosch in 1952. He died in 1995.

Surviving are brother and sister-in-law, Adolf and Betty Pietzonka, Davenport; nieces, Kathi King, Moline, Suzanne Wooten, Charlotte, N.C.; nephew, Paul Pietzonka, Davenport; a great-nephew.

Carl Berry
Carl E. Berry, 93, of Davenport, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Runge Chapel, Davenport. Entombment will be in Memorial Park cemetery , Davenport. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to C.A.S.I.

Carl retired from Augustana College, Rock Island. As a young man, Carl was a certified marine engineer on barges on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.

Carl was a member of the Blackhawk Hiking Club, the Tuesday Bicycle Club, C.A.S.I., and A.A.R.P. He enjoyed traveling around the world including a hike into the Grand Canyon at the age of 80.

He enjoyed an active life with a sense of humor and generosity that will be missed by all.

He was devoted to his family with a true multigenerational love.

Those left to honor Carl's memory include nieces (and spouse), Marie (Leroy) Clason, Milan, Joann Kepner, Houston, Texas, Barbara, St. Louis, Mo.; nephews (and spouses), Don (Carole) Ellingsworth, Elkton, Fla., Robert (Carol) Ellingsworth, Davenport; two great-nieces; and four great-nephews. Carl was preceded by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and two great nephews.

Dorothy H. Halden
Dorothy H. Halden, 93, of Davenport, died Saturday, Feb 5, 2005, at Fejervary Health Care Center, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending with the Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Chris Roussell
Chris Roussell, 101, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Runge, Davenport, with a 6 p.m. prayer service.

Chris was born Dec. 14, 1903, to Leo and Melvina Roussell. He married Freda Kisting in 1925. He later married Velma Kennedy. They are both deceased.

Survivors (and spouses) include daughters, Darlene (Fred) Carstens, Davenport, Doris (Bob) Hollmer, Taylor Ridge, Mary (Jim) Piercy, Moline; son, Leo (Marilyn) Roussell, Davenport; step-daughter, RuthAnn (Ron) Botts, Denver; sister, Lettie Unmacht, Dubuque.

Albina 'Tillie' Zanutto
Albina F. 'Tillie' Zanutto, 75, formerly of Davenport, died Feb. 3, 2005, in Madison, Wis.

Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport. Honoring Tillie's wishes, the Mass of Christian Burial and graveside services will take place privately.

Albina Florence Spina was born on Oct. 27, 1929, in Houston, Texas. She married Anthony F. Zanutto on Sept. 17, 1952.

The Zanutto family was the owner of Tri-City Mantel & Tile Company for nearly 40 years.

Tillie is survived by her children and spouses, Jane and Bill Crone, Madison, Julia Zanutto, Dallas, Texas, Jennifer Vincent, Chicago, Jill Zanutto, Denver, Colo., and John Zanutto, Chicago; grandchildren, John and Anne Crone, Madison, Gina and Jill Zanutto, Baton Rouge, La.

Anne Gustafson
Anne C. Gustafson, 87, of Rock Island, died Feb. 2, 2005, at Silver Cross Nursing Home, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline, with visitation one hour prior at the church. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Free Church, Moline. Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline, is assisting the family.

Anne was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Moline, to Peter and Olga Johanson Carlson. She married Gustaf Elmer Gustafson on Jan. 3, 1942, in Moline. He preceded her in death on March 26, 1993.

Anne was a teacher for 15 years for the Colona/Carbon Cliff School District, retiring in 1972.

Anne was a member of First Evangelical Free Church, Moline, where she was the co-founder of Keen Agers Group. She enjoyed reading, playing golf and fishing.

Survivors (and spouses) include her daughter, Emily (Larry) Rose, Newton, Iowa; son, Peter (JoAnne) Gustafson, Waconia, Minn.; grandchildren, David Rose, Amy Blanton, Drew Gustafson, Francine Gustafson and Simon Gustafson; two great-grandchildren, Kristen and Rachel Rose.

Dorothy Haswell
Dorothy Mae Haswell, 74, of the Coventry Apartments, Rock Island, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Irene Kramarsic
Irene Pauline Kramarsic, 86, of LaSalle, Ill., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Catholic Church in LaSalle. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Hyacinth's cemetery , LaSalle. Memorials may be made to Resurrection Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island, where she also was a member, or to St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center. Burgess Funeral Home, LaSalle, is assisting the family.

Irene was born Nov. 6, 1918, in Oglesby, Ill., to Peter and Theresa Castagna. She married Edward Kramarsic May 6, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1984.

Irene was first and foremost a mother to her daughter, Joan Clark, and her son, Thomas. She was a bookkeeper for her husband's dairy business, and she managed the Fab & Trim Fabric Store in LaSalle until they closed in the 1970s. She loved to work with crafts and was known for the beautiful Christmas tree ornaments and flowers she created. She was also a seamstress, often making clothes for her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook her favorite Italian recipes (raviolis and pasta made from scratch) for her family, who greatly enjoyed eating her specialties.

She was an active member of Resurrection Church until she moved to Rock Island in 2001. She was a devout Catholic who said the rosary and prayed to St. Anthony daily. In her younger days, she attended daily Mass at her neighborhood church.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Clark (and husband, Thom), Rock Island; and a son, Thomas (and wife, Terri), LaSalle. She had six grandchildren, Kimberly Allen, Scott Clark, Cory Skahill, Ryan Kramarsic, Doug Kramarsic, Kyle Kramarsic; and four great-grandchildren. She will be remembered fondly by many of her friends in LaSalle, especially Agnes Glupcyznski, Minnie Carter and Ray and Ann Cregier. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and six brothers and sisters.

Kurt Nussbaum
Kurt K. Nussbaum, 78, of Rock Island, formerly of Bettendorf, died Feb. 3, 2005, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

His body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. J.D. Georlett will officiate. Private inurnment will take place at Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials may be made in his name to the family fund.

Mr. Nussbaum was born March 8, 1926, in Vienna, Austria, to Albert and Leopoldine Straka Nussbaum, Hintonberger. He lived in Austria during the German Occupation and immigrated to the United States on Veterans Day in 1960. Upon arrival, he and his sister went on a tour of America and settled in the Quad-Cities. He married Dorothy 'Dee' Partridge Miles Nussbaum on March 29, 1968, in Rock Island. He became a naturalized citizen in 1968 and was very patriotic. Kurt earned his master's degree in sanitation engineering and plumbing from Vienna Technical University, Austria. He attended Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island.

Kurt had been employed at Ideal Plumbing and Phillips Plumbing before going into partnership with the former East Moline Plumbing and Heating. He later became sole owner of the new Continental Plumbing, East Moline. He was also the owner of Superior Pools and Spas, East Moline. After closing his shop, he worked as a millwright for Farmall for a short time until it closed.

Mr. Nussbaum served as past secretary and treasurer of the Rock River Plumbing and Heating Contractors Association. He was a member of the Sanitary Engineers Association and the Administrative Management Society. In his free time, he loved to travel, hunt, boat and fish and enjoyed family fishing trips to Hayward, Wis. In his younger years, he enjoyed skiing and mountain climbing. He liked to play chess and was great at dancing the polka and tango.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Dee, Rock Island; sister, Trudy Reynolds, Bettendorf; sons, Karl Nussbaum, Vienna, Austria, Kurt Nussbaum, Thailand; stepson, Mark (Dawn) Miles, East Moline; grandchildren, Ewald Nussbaum, Vienna, Austria, Kalah (Carl) Hancock, Virginia Beach, Va., Matthew Miles, Rock Island, Evelyn, Austria; great-granddaughter, Katarina Nussbaum; niece, Monika Saboe, Hollywood, N.M.; great-niece, Sharell (Carlos) Cerda, California, and their children, Philip, Hunter and Benjamin; great-nephews, Douglas and Herbert. His parents preceded him in death.
