George Kroeger
George W. Kroeger, 96, formerly of Moline, died Jan. 27, 2005, in Mesa, Ariz., where he moved in September 1996.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, East Moline.

George was born Oct. 18, 1908, in Moline, son of Henry and Matilda Holm Kroeger. He married Helen Berklund on Nov. 26, 1936, in Moline. She preceded him in death on May 24, 1995.

George started as a tracer with John Deere Harvester, East Moline. Through the years, he was promoted to a supervisor in the process and tool department, where he worked for 40 years, retiring in 1972. George was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the John Deere Retirees group. George enjoyed woodworking. He was the youngest of 18 children, all of whom preceded him in death.

Survivors (and spouses) are his daughter, Judith K. (Gary L.) Sparks, Mesa, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews, including Linda (David) Bousselot, Mesa; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife and 17 siblings.

Arthur Lindgren
Arthur LeRoy Lindgren, 85, formerly of Moline, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, in Los Angeles, Calif., after a brief illness.

Services were held Jan. 19 and 23 at Hope Lutheran Church in Hollywood, Calif.

Arthur was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Moline, to Hugo and Julia Lindgren.

After serving in the United States Air Force, Arthur graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a degree in criminal sociology. Arthur dedicated his professional life to working with the Federal Correctional Institution system and, later, as a probation officer in Dallas County.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1981. In his retirement, Arthur became an expert world traveler and counted Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Japan, India and Israel, among others, in the distant lands he visited.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Lindgren, Los Angeles, and Todd Lindgren Dallas, Texas; daughter, Laura Lindgren, New York City; and a granddaughter, Julia Astrid Lindgren, Dallas.

Lance Smith
Lance N. Smith, 66, of Milan, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery , Port Byron. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Milan American Legion.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 20, 1938, in Barton, Vt., son of Floyd and Thelma Kinsley Smith. He married Jane Jordan Payne on Dec. 26, 1986, in Milan.

He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1978 after 22 1/2 years. He was employed by Kewanee Boiler Co. for 24 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Milan American Legion, the Sea Owl Association, the Milan Rifle Club and Orleans Lodge 55 AF & AM in Vermont.

He enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard and garden, and he most enjoyed puttering with different things.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Tina Marie Smith, Virginia Beach, Va., Lisa Smith, Kewanee; sons, Anthony Smith, Moline, Vincent Payne, Andalusia, and Chris Brasmer, Moline; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Mason, Barton.

Mary Stone
Mary M. Stone, 86, of Roscoe, Ill., formerly of Coal Valley, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Rockford Memorial Hospital, Rockford, Ill.

Arrangements are pending at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley.

Cathrine DePauw
Cathrine F. DePauw, 93, of Geneseo, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo.

Arrangements are pending at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo.

Arlyn Dorathy Jr.
Arlyn J. Dorathy Jr., 61, of Morrison, died Feb. 1, 2005, at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Prophetstown United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Grove Hill cemetery , Morrison. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Prophetstown.

Arlyn was born July 15, 1943, in Moline, to Arlyn and Pauline Ottens Dorathy. He graduated from Prophetstown High School in 1961.

He was employed as a truck driver for Carry Trucking, Keokuk, Iowa.

He is survived by his mother, Morrison; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and William Gerveler, Avondale, Ariz.; four nieces; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father and sisters, Susan Kennedy and Corinne Osborne.

George `Ted' Heath
George 'Ted' Heath, 92, of Keithsburg, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Aledo. Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

He was born March 25, 1912, in Keithsburg, son of Harry and Ina Billings Heath. He married Celia Norman July 6, 1935, in Aledo. She preceded him in death Oct. 11, 1992.

Mr. Heath graduated from Keithsburg High School. He worked for J.I. Case in Rock Island for 13 years and in Burlington for 12 years. He retired in 1974 as a machine operator. After retirement, he and his wife owned and operated Highland Park Miniature Golf in Keithsburg until 1993.

He enjoyed mowing. Mr. Heath was a Jehovah's Witness.

Surviving are his daughters, Melissa Totten, Roseville, Ill., and Linda Lee, Keithsburg; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Dona Curry, Illinois City, and Anita Cale, Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two daughters, two brothers and three sisters.

Clara Hook
Clara A. Hook, 91, of Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the nursing home.

Arrangements are pending at the Fulton Chapel of Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.

Merle Reed Sr.
Merle C. Reed Sr., 89, of Illinois City, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Church in Andalusia. The Rev. Richard Barcliff will officiate. Casket bearers will be James Billingsley, Dan Reed, Don Martin, Jeffrey Longcor, Kristopher Bowers and Robert Sours. Burial will be in Drury Reynolds cemetery .

Visitation for Merle will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. at George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine, and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at St. Patrick's Church. A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Patrick's Church following interment. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick's Church or Drury Reynolds cemetery in Merle's name. Sympathy notes may be left for the Reed family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Merle was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Mercer County, Ill., son of Ed E. and Nona Pullen Reed. On Nov. 24, 1937, Merle was united in marriage to Martha Bopp in Keithsburg.

Merle was a lifetime farmer and Cubs fan. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Andalusia. Merle enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Merle will be deeply missed by one son, Merle C. Reed Jr. and his wife, Linda, Illinois City; three daughters, Mary Ellen Longcor, Muscatine, Marjorie A. Bowers and her husband, David, Taylor Ridge, and Carol M. Martin and her husband, David, Taylor Ridge; nine grandchildren, Kathy Lafayette, James Billingsley, Jeffrey Longcor, Dan Reed, Sherry Sours, Angela Schott, Kristopher Bowers, Don Martin and Christy Reid; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne Reed, Davenport, and Dale Reed and his wife, Shirley, Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha, on Dec. 9, 2004; five brothers; two sisters; and two grandchildren, Cara and Elizabeth Bowers.

Harlo Ricketts
Harlo B. Ricketts, 86, of Illinois City, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at George M. Wittich-Lewis, Muscatine. Burial is in Drury Reynolds cemetery . Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.

He was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Illinois City, to Raymord J. and Katherine Watson Ricketts. He married Mary D. Ziegenhorn Oct. 12, 1946, in Drury Township, Ill.

Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Lori Ricketts, Illinois City; grandchildren, Aaron and Tracy Ricketts; and special cousin, Ruth Fuller, Illinois City.

Garry Anderson
Garry G. Anderson, 62, of Bettendorf, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf.

Carl Berry
Carl E. Berry, 93, of Davenport, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Runge Mortuary, Davenport.

Eric Cudmore
Eric W. Cudmore, 86, of Mission, Texas, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at his residence.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Davenport Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation is 9 to 11 a.m. at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport.

Edward Gere
Edward 'Eddie' Gere, 96, of Davenport, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Davenport Good Samaritan Center.

Services are 3 p.m. Thursday at Weerts, Davenport. Visitation is 2 p.m. to services. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park.

Eddie was born Sept. 19, 1908. He married Elizabeth Schilling in 1937. She died in 1981.

Survivors are his children (and spouses), Sheri (Tom) George, West Des Moines, Iowa; John (Diane) and Perry (Julie), both of Davenport; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Werner, Marion, Iowa, and Irma Miller, Davenport;

David Hixson
David W. Hixson, 73, of Pleasant Valley, died Jan. 30, 2005, at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at McGinnis-Chambers, Bettendorf. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

He was born April 6, 1931, in Chariton, Iowa, to Otis and Iris Hixson. He married LaDonna Jean Benway June 26, 1955. She died Dec. 21, 1989.

Surviving are his daughter, Danette Johnson, Pleasant Valley; granddaughters, Brittania and Jasmine Johnson; and a sister. He was preceded in death by his wife and daughter, Dawn Michelle.

Irene Kreider
Irene Kreider, 90, of Davenport, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Shirley Myers
Shirley J. Myers, 77, of Davenport, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Davenport Good Samaritan Center.

Bonita Paulsen
Bonita L. 'Bonnie' Paulsen, 57, of Davenport, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at her home.

A celebration of life memorial service will be 1 p.m. today at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Bonnie was born Aug. 9, 1947, in Milan, daughter of Marlin 'Jake' and Ida H. Schmidt Schmidt.

She was employed by Red Jacket, Marley Pump, Davenport, for 25 years as an assembler.

She enjoyed gardening, canning and her family.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mischelle and David Vasold, Davenport, Ranae Ralfs-Gall and Scott Gall, Davenport, and Dawn and John Maxfield, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; her mother, Ida Schmidt, Reynolds; two sisters, Sharon Curtis, Reynolds, and Nadine Liberatore, Springfield, Ill.; a brother, Brian Schmidt, Reynolds; a special friend and neighbor, Carol Hobart, Davenport; Bonnie's dog, TWIGS; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and her sister, C. Suzie Ziegler.
