Millicent Yarrington
Millicent Yarrington, 93, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, formerly Davenport, died Jan. 31, 2005, in Cedar Falls.

Private funeral services will be held in Runge Mortuary Chapel, Davenport. There will be no visitation. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park.

She was born Jan. 17, 1912, in Davenport, to Howard and Hazel Jefferies Walker. She married Earl Yarrington in Milan. He preceded her in death.

There are no immediate survivors. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather, Jim Vasliff.

Mary Jones
Mary F. Jones, 78, of Rock Island, passed Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in San Antonio, Texas.

Services will be noon Friday at Second Baptist Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Mary was born June 4, 1926, in Warren, Ark., the daughter of Thomas and Calantha Neeley Whitfield. She married Ernest Jones, Sr. in Chicago, Ill. He preceded her in passing Nov. 18, 1980. She was valedictorian of her high school class. She received her associates degree from Black Hawk College in early child development.

Mary was a child-care worker at Rainbow-Skip-A-Long Day Care and Head Start at Grant Elementary School, both in Rock Island.

She was the oldest and longest serving member of the choir at the church. She was a member fo the Adah Chapter of O.E.S. She enjoyed traveling, watching Michael Jordan and following the San Antonio Spurs.

Survivors (and spouses) include daughters, Marilyn (Danny) Sutton, Milwaukee, Wis., Bobbie Jean (Mike) Kelley, San Antonio, Cheryl McQueen, Milwaukee, Elois Willis, Rock Island, Theresa (James) Jones, Rock Island; sons, Marty Jones, Rock Island, William Jones, Rock Island; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Hudspeth, Rock Island, Barbara Davis, Kansas City, Mo.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Isola Swanson
Isola Gault Swanson, 95, of Rock Island, formerly of Cambridge, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center in Rock Island. Isola experienced continuing deterioration of her health due to the effects of age and diabetes.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. The Rev. Carlene Appel will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery , Cambridge. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cambridge or the Cambridge Ambulance Service.

The former Isola Scott was born Feb. 7, 1909, in Cambridge, the daughter of Mark and Mamie Mizner Scott. Isola was named by her mother's twin sister for the island where Napoleon spent time in exile, Isola d'Elba. She was a 1926 graduate of Cambridge High School and spent her entire life in Cambridge until moving to St. Anthony's. Her marriage to Raymond Gault took place on Sept. 22, 1928, in Geneseo. He died July 12, 1968. She married Donald B. Swanson Jan. 18, 1973, in Cambridge. He died April 30, 1998.

Isola was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cambridge and the Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a volunteer for many years to the American Red Cross blood mobile. She had been employed at the Farmers Co-op Seed Co., Henry County Farm Bureau, and the Henry County Clerk's office. Isola left this message for us, 'Sermon to be cheerful. I have had a wonderful life and lived long enough to see children married and established in their professions. I enjoyed all my grandchildren.'

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John and Karleen Gault, Marco Island, Fla.; a stepson and his wife, Charlie and Judy Swanson, Vernon Hills, Ill.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Donna and Charlie Dirck, Cambridge; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Lucille Neumann, Cambridge, and Aimee Hungate, East Moline; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Gault, Orion; and a son-in-law, Dennis Ingersoll, Moline. Her two husbands; a son, Bob Gault; a daughter, Penny Ingersoll; and a sister, Zella Bjorling, preceded her in death.

Michael Wilson
Michael R. Wilson, 59, of Rock Island, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Richard Hainline
Richard Ray Hainline, 42, of Lake Worth, Fla., died at home Jan. 26, 2005.

Services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity International Church in Florida. His final resting place will be in New Boston cemetery .

Richard was born in Moline, May 17, 1962, to James and Janet Hainline. He graduated from Sherrard High School in 1980, and moved to Florida shortly thereafter.

He owned and operated his own concrete construction business.

Survivors include his son, Eric Ray Hainline; parents, James and Janet Hainline, both of Florida; two brothers, Edward and Daniel, both Florida; two sisters, Tammy Sajak and Diana Eickhorn, both of Texas; six nieces and two nephews.

Catherine Hodge
Catherine Hodge, 87, of Sterling, Ill., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2004, at CGH Medical Center, Sterling.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Paul C. White, celebrant officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart cemetery .

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls, Ill. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of the BVM, Dubuque, Iowa.

She was born Dec. 16, 1917, in Sterling, the daughter of Edward Francis and Louise Irene Ribordy Vock. She married George Hodge Nov. 24, 1937, in Polo, Ill. He died Dec. 14, 1968.

She had worked in the dietary department at CGH Medical Center, Sterling, for 13 years.

Mrs. Hodge was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Sterling, and the Altar and Rosary Society, where she helped prepare funeral dinners. She was a 50-year member of Homemakers Extension and past volunteer at the FISH food pantry.

Survivors (and spouses) are her three sons, Orville (Judy) Hodge and Joe (Pat) Hodge, both of Sterling, and James (Dawn) Hodge, Dixon, Ill.; daughter, Lucille (Herman) Michels, Moline; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Francis Vock, Polo; and sisters, Bernadine Blum, Lorreta Carroll and Dorothy Clothier, all of Polo, Ruth Forrestall, Ohio, Ill., and Eilene (Bruce) Wright, Lake Carroll, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Louise Hodge in 1953; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Margaret Johnson
Margaret A. Johnson, 102, Naperville, Ill., formerly Moline, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at St. Patrick's Residence, Naperville.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Residence and 2 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. today at Linwood cemetery , Galesburg. Visitation was 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. Additional visitation was 10-11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Timothy Lutheran Building Fund, 1313 N. Mill St., Naperville, IL 60563, or a charity of the donor's choice.

She was born July 10, 1902, in Chicago. Margaret attended Northwestern University. She was a Naperville resident for the past four years and a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church of Naperville. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors (and spouses) include two children, the Rev. John (Mary) Freed, West Bloomfield, Mich., and Nancy (Rev. Herbert) Carlmark, Naperville; five grandchildren, Nanette (Dan) Dahlke, Timothy (Britta) Carlmark, David (Sunny) Freed, Elizabeth (Ben) Carter, and Jeanne Freed; 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands, Harold J. Freed and Wilbur D. Johnson (former fire chief of Moline).

Dale Kizer
Dale L. Kizer, 79, of Moline, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at his winter residence in Zephyrhills, Fla.

A masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd. 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. before the service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Riverside cemetery , Moline, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to the KAABA Temple Children's Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 3627, Davenport, IA. 52808.

Dale was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Moline, to Arthur E. Kizer and Ethel Lyon Kizer. He retired from Priester Construction Company in Davenport and was a World War II Navy veteran.

He was a member and past Master of the Valley Masonic Lodge 547 in Coal Valley, past Patron of OES 274 Valley Chapter, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, KAABA Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S. of Davenport, and on the Director's Staff, one of the KAABA Prowler's, a member of the Zal Grotto of Moline, and a receipient of the Grand Cross of Color of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jacqueline L. Kizer, Moline; five children, Jennifer DeLisle, Jacksonville, Fla., Robin Kizer, Moline, Ardith Dunn, Port Byron, Ginger Kester, East Moline, Rhonda Garlock, Rossville, Kan.; one nephew, David Kizer, Moline; six grandchildren, Erik Kizer, Barbara Kizer, Rebecca Nandell, Cassandra Dunn, Kyle Garlock and Stephanie Garlock; three great-grandchildren, Emily Kizer, Megan Kizer and Owen Kizer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Kizer.

George Kroeger
George W. Kroeger, 96, formerly of Moline, died Jan. 27, 2005, in Mesa, Ariz.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

Roberta Pearson
Roberta J. Pearson, 85, of Bloomington, Ill., a former Moline civic leader, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in Martin Health Center at Westminster Village, Bloomington.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, Trinity Medical Center Auxiliary, Rock Island, or Hearts at Home National Ministry for Moms, Normal, Ill.

The former Roberta Jane Townsend was born June 19, 1919, in Moline, the daughter of Ernest and Addie Lund Townsend. She graduated from Moline High School and completed three years at Augustana College, Rock Island. She married J. Richard 'Dick' Pearson Oct. 5, 1942, in Moline. He died April 5, 1985.

She was a member of the Moline School Board for 18 years, from 1962-1980, and was only the second woman ever elected to the Board of Education at the time.

She served as president pro tempore from 1966-75, and served as the first ever woman board president from 1977-1980. She started her public involvement as president of the Grant School PTA in 1954 and continued through PTA involvement as Moline PTA Council Board President in 1962. During her years on the school board, she was vice chair and chairman of the Blackhawk Division of Illinois Association of School Boards, Chairperson of the Large District Councils in the State, 1975-1977, member of the IASB Board of Directors, Chairman of the 1977 IASB Annual Convention in Chicago and on the Legislation Committee.

Roberta was a charter member of the Moline Commission on Youth, 1960-1975, and served as chairman for two years, during which time she initiated the Big Brother and Big Sister programs in Moline and served on their state boards, 1966-1968. She served on the Illinois Department of Corrections (Commission of Delinquency Prevention) Board, 1964-1981, where she helped troubled young girls appearing in court, and was past chairperson of the Rock Island County Youth Service Bureau, 1975-1976. Through the Illinois Office of Education select committees, she advanced special education finance, community education, free textbook and regional services planning.

She received numerous honors, including the Moline Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award, 1970; Illinois Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie's Governor's Citation for Distinguished Public Service in 1972; honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma, International Women Educators Society in 1972; Illinois Association of School Administrators Presidential Citation, 1973; City of Moline Citation, 1975; Youth Service Bureau Citation, 1976; IASA Presidential Citation, Blackhawk Division 1976; and a PTA Life membership, Book of Life and Special Honor Scroll in 1980. In 1984, the Quad Cities District of the National Association of Social Workers presented Pearson with its Citizen of the Year award for her work with youth and the community.

She joined the Moline Public Hospital Auxiliary in 1980, served as president, 1982-1986, led fundraising efforts for the non-denominational chapel at the hospital, and knitted hundreds of stocking caps for newborns at the hospital in the 1990s. She was a charter member of Irene Zimmer Circle of King's Daughters, a member of Moline Junior Service League, League of Women Voters. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moline and the first chairperson of Trinity's Lutheran Church Women.

Her children and family honored her on her 80th birthday in June of 1999 at Short Hills Country Club in East Moline. In 2001, she moved to Westminster Village, a retirement community, in Bloomington. She enjoyed playing the organ, reading, needlepoint work, spending time with her granddaughters and outings with her lifelong friends from the Moline area.

Roberta is survived by two children and their spouses, Patricia and Roy Knight, Mooresville, N.C., and James R. and Sherri Pearson, Bloomington; two granddaughters, Christina Payton and her husband, Christopher, West Chicago, Ill., and Caitlyn Pearson, Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews.

Berniece Armstrong
Berniece B. Armstrong, 86, of Silvis, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Heartland Health Care, Moline.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Port Byron, where she was a member. Burial is in Freidens cemetery , Port Byron. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Memorials can be made to the church.

She was born March 23, 1918, in Fulton, the daughter of Ralph and Myrtle May Hoff Huggins. She married Donald Armstrong July 30, 1937, in Ripley, N.Y. He preceded her in death March 26, 2002.

She retired as the head cook for Barstow Grade School. Berniece was a lifetime member of Barstow Ladies Auxiliary, was a member of Peace Lutheran Church Woman's Auxiliary, and loved animals.

Survivors (and spouses) include three sons, Dale (Joyce) Armstrong, Silvis, Dallas (Sue) Armstrong, East Moline, and Jerry (Linda) Armstrong, Peoria; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Viola, brothers, Howard, LeVern, Irving and Ray, a son, Duane, and a granddaughter, Jaimi.

Shirley Huether
Shirley J. Huether, 77, of Silvis, died Jan. 29, 2005, at her home.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitation is Wednesday 4 to 7 p.m. at the mortuary, with a visitation one hour before the service on Thursday. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moilne. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice, American Cancer Society, or a charity of choice.

Shirley was born Sept. 6, 1927, in Yakima, Wash., to Guy and Ammie-Laurie Hurd Harris. She married William Huether June 21, 1946, in East Moline.

Shirley was a homemaker. She was also an operator for the former Moline Public and East Moline Hospitals.

Shirley enjoyed being with her family, swimming and was a Girl Scout Leader. She was also a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline.

Survivors include her husband, Bill; daughter, Laurie Mitchler, Atkinson; son, Bob Huether, Silvis; grandchildren, Brendan and Amanda Huether, and Bailee Huether; brother, Guy Harris, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Gary Jones
Gary L. Jones, 60, of Lebanon, Mo., formerly of the Quad-Cities, died Jan. 27, 2005, at St. John's Hospital-Lebanon.

Services were held Jan. 29, at Holman-Howe, Lebanon. Burial was in Hufft cemetery near Eldridge, Mo. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

He was a professional musician and also owned and operated Gary's Music Mart, Silvis, for several years. He had played in several bands.

He was born March 8, 1944.

Surviving are his parents, five aunts; an uncle; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife Julie who died July 7, 1998.

Lance Smith
Lance N. Smith, 66, of Milan, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at the V.A. Medical Center, Iowa City.

Arrangements are pending at the Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron.

Cyriel Cauwels
Cyriel Cauwels, 90, a resident of the Hammond-Henry Hospital Extended Care Unit, formerly of rural Mineral, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at the Extended Care Unit.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson. Monsignor Don Fitzpatrick will officiate. Burial will be in St. Anthony's cemetery , Atkinson. Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Cyriel Cauwels Memorial Fund.

Cyriel was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Burns Township, Kewanee, the son of Frank and Marie Louise VanQuakebeke Cauwels. He married Sadie Tillie Jan. 31, 1940, in Annawan. She preceded him in death in 1977.

Cyriel was a lifetime farmer in rural Mineral since 1940, farming for 60 years. He retired in 2000. He was a very accomplished inventor and built miniature tractors, bailers and other farm equipment to scale.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clemon and Edmond Cauwels; and a sister, Selina Vermiere.
