Betty Hansen
Betty J. Hansen of Kewanee, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, surrounded by her family.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kewanee. The Rev. Steven Bird will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery , Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to Visitation School Foundation or the Kewanee Public Library. Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee is in charge of arrangements.

Betty was the daughter of Julius H. and Grace M. Hermie. She married Robert J. Hansen on June 10, 1950. He was the former Chairman of the Board and President of Union Federal Savings & Loan Association. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are her children, Mark J. (Christine) Hansen, Pamela A. Hansen (James Briese), Christopher R. (Karen Kalenowski) Hansen, and Angela J. (Richard) Teska; her grandchildren, Rebecca A., Tyler D., and Alexander R. Hansen, and Abigail K. and Amelia E. Teska; a brother, Vernon Hermie; and a brother-in-law, Clarence (Joe) Hansen. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Darlene M. Keeley.

She was a dedicated mother and homemaker. For many years she volunteered at Visitation School, working primarily in children's reading programs. She was assistant treasurer for the Visitation School Foundation for nearly 20 years. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Virginia Meredith
Virginia M. Meredith, 83, of Matherville, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Rock Island Memorial Park cemetery . Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan.

Virginia was born April 24, 1922, in Henry County, the daughter of Calvin J. and Bernice Slater Osborne. She married George Earl Meredith on Aug. 12, 1940, in Canton, Mo.

Survivors include her husband, George; daughter (spouse), Judith (Gale) Anderson, Preemption; son, Earl Meredith, East Moline; two grandchildren, Deanna Matthews and Mark Anderson; three great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Amanda Matthews, and Walker Anderson. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents.

Jerry Roselieb
Jerry Roselieb, 55, of Green Forest, Ark., died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, in Green Forest.

Arrangements are pending at the Gibson Funeral Home, Erie.

Kent Schroeder
Kent A. Schroeder, 56, of Geneseo, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at the Pathway Hospice unit of Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Services are pending with Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Geneseo.

Judith Eischeid
Services for Judith A. "Judy" Eischeid, 64, of Bettendorf, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic, Bettendorf. Burial is in Mt. Calvary cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m.

She died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at home.

She was born March 1, 1941, to Richard and Evelyn Brus. She married Richard Eischeid April 26, 1969.

Survivors are husband; daughter, Elaine Quinn, Davenport; two grandchildren; brothers, Richard Brus, Alabama, Robert Brus, Bolingbrook, Ill.

Al Mart
Al Mart, 73, of Bettendorf, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at McGinnis-Chambers, Bettendorf. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

He was born March 16, 1932. Survivors are wife, Pat; children, Kellene, Iowa City, Iowa, Kae, Ames, Iowa, Jeanne, Fraser, Colo., Mollie Willis, Plainfield, Ill., Eric, Davenport, David, Bettendorf; seven grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Umble, Knoxville, Iowa, Linda Johnson, Indianola, Iowa; brothers, Lloyd, Roseville, Minn., Gordon, Mike, both Des Moines, Iowa, Rick, Melcherallas, Gary, Knoxville.

David Shmigelsky
David Shmigelsky, 47, of Bettendorf, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center West Campus, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport.

Arden Waetke
Funeral services and Mass of Christian burial for Arden D. "Artie" Waetke, 75, a resident of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery , Davenport. Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. that all are invited to attend.

Mr. Waetke died on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center West Campus, Davenport, following an extended illness and courageous battle. Memorials can be made to the church or to Genesis Pulmonary Unit.

Arden Duane Waetke was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Davenport, a son of Herbert and Cinderella Groenwoldt Waetke. He was united in marriage to Barbara A. Boll on May 8, 1954, in Davenport. She preceded him in death on July 30, 1996. They had enjoyed nearly 42 years of marriage at the time of her passing.

He was proud of his service to our country, having served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Artie retired in 1988, after 32 years of service for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier.

He enjoyed fishing and was a talented woodworker. He was also a member of the church.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Steve Sim, Geneseo, Sally and Jay Duncan, Muscatine, Iowa; and a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jill Waetke, Bettendorf; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. In addition to his wife and parents, three brothers also preceded him in death.

Emily Moore
Emily I. Moore, 96, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Private graveside services will take place today. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is assisting the family. Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, Rock Island.

The former Emily Isadora Howe was born July 9, 1909, daughter of Osgood and Cherry Lou Wagner Howe. She married Harb Moore Dec. 12, 1931, in Lexington, Ky. He died Nov. 26, 1996.

Emily and her husband were co-owners of Kent Shoes in Rock Island for more than 45 years.

Emily is survived by a son, Hal Moore, Rock Island; granddaughters and spouses, Mary Anne and Rick Waldorf and Marcia and Dale Major; grandson, Mark Moore; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

Ethel Ford
Ethel C. Ford, 86, of Moline, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at River Park Healthcare Center, Rock Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with the Rev. Janice Griffith officiating. Burial is in Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is one hour before the services.

The former Ethel Mae Chelar was born Aug. 30, 1919, near Albia, Iowa, daughter of Matt and Nellie Miller Chelar. She married Lloyd B. Ford Feb. 14, 1942, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He died Dec. 9, 1990.

She and her husband owned and operated the former Manhattan Cafe in downtown Moline for 20 years. She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline, and enjoyed the outdoors, yardwork and gardening.

Ethel is survived by a sister, Ruth Rasko, Indianola, Iowa; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Dortha Chelar, Albia, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Raymond Chelar.

Pearl Normoyle
Pearl V. Normoyle, 94, of Milan, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park cemetery . Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Normoyle was born April 27, 1911, in Moline, daughter of Alfred and Emma Johnson. She married Thomas E. Normoyle July 23, 1928, in Galesburg. He preceded her in death in 1977.

She was the matriarch of five generations and was a special mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and gardening. The family would like to thank the staff at Trinity Medical Center for all of the care and consideration given to Pearl.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Powell, Rock Island; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Normoyle Jr. in 1996.

Phyllis Brown
Phyllis A. Brown, 88, of Alexis, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Alexis United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Phil Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Alexis cemetery . Friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the church, where her family will be present one hour prior to services. Memorials may be made to Alexis United Presbyterian Church or Alexis-North Henderson Ambulance Fund. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born May 21, 1917, in Mercer County, daughter of Archie and Frances Almquist Peterson. She was reared and educated in Mercer County, graduating from Aledo High School in 1935. She earned her teaching certification from Western Illinois University and later graduated from Augustana College in 1965. Phyllis married Valance "V.R." Brown in Aledo on Jan. 15, 1945, and he died Dec. 13, 2000.

Phyllis was a teacher for 29 years. She taught at schools west of Aledo, Stoney Point School, located between Aledo and Viola. She later taught for several years in the Alexis School District before retiring in 1974.

She was a member of Alexis United Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, where she was a member of the Rachel Circle. She was a member for more than 50 years and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member and past president of Alexis PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, Trumpit Bridge Club and Republican Women's Association. She was a member and past president of Alexis Women's Club and Mercer County Retired Teachers Association.

Phyllis loved to read, garden and sew.

Surviving are her two sisters, Marjorie Carlson, Sherrard, and Irene Bergfeld, Rock Island; one brother, Wendell Peterson, Chandler, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Joyce J. Fionda.

Marjorie Chelstrom
Marjorie June Chelstrom, 81, of Orion, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion. Burial will be in Lutheran cemetery , Orion. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established.

Marjorie was born June 13, 1924, in Moline to John David and Edna Gertrude Anderson Mellgren. She married Robert Dean Chelstrom Nov. 1, 1947, in Moline. He preceded her in death in 1957.

Prior to her marriage, Marjorie attended business college in Moline and worked at the former Strombeck's, Moline, and the Rock Island Arsenal. After raising her two children, she worked at the Orion Library and McCabe's Department Store.

Marjorie was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the WELCA, Clover Circle.

Marjorie is survived by son, Steve (wife, Rita) Chelstrom, Coal Valley; daughter, Cheryl (husband, Warren) Hall, Monticello, Iowa; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Rosalie Mellgren; brother-in-law, Donald Carlson. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ellsworth Mellgren; and two sisters, Marlowe Carlson and Marion Johnson.

LeRoy `Spud' Nelson
LeRoy E. "Spud" Nelson, 74, of Viola, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Calvary Lutheran Church, New Windsor. Burial is in Hopewell cemetery , New Windsor. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Dennison Funeral Home, Viola, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercer County 4-H Federation.

He was born Dec. 21, 1931, in rural Viola, son of Paul and Eva Thompson Nelson. He married Alice Cook. He later married Phyllis Gardner in April 1964 in Aledo.

He graduated from Viola High School. He farmed all his life in the Viola area. He was named Conservation Farmer of the Year. He also was a breeder of Red Angus cattle and a member of the Red Angus Cattle Association. He was also a 4-H leader in Mercer County and served as a host family for the 4-H IFYE program.

He loved fishing and snowmobile riding. He loved his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

He belonged to Calvary Lutheran Church, where he was a member of Lutheran Churchmen.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Nelson, Viola; two daughters (and sons-in-law), Nancy (Bob) Olson, New Windsor, Sharon (John) Tahere, Davenport; five sons (and daughters-in-law), Gary Nelson, Curt Nelson, Mike (Patty) Nelson, Joe (Laura) Stead, all of Viola, Darrin (Lanie) Nelson, Orion; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ila Robinson, Viola; two brothers, Dale Nelson, Boyceville, Wis., and Dean Nelson, Viola. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son in infancy, Gerald Nelson; one daughter, Connie Brooks.

Donovan Shambaugh
Donovan Keith Shambaugh, 72, of Galva, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, in the emergency room at Kewanee Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Rux Funeral Home, Galva. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.

He was born April 19, 1933, in LaFayette, Ill., son of Harold O. and Mildred B. Craig Shambaugh. He married Barbara Dawson in 1952, and later Nancy Simpson in 2000.

He graduated from LaFayette High School. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force in Japan during the Korean War. He had been a welder for John Deere in Moline, retiring in 1987. He was a jack of all trades, but enjoyed doing electrical, carpentry, welding and gardening. He was also a horseman who enjoyed raising quarterhorses. He was president of the Roving Wranglers.

Survivors are wife, Nancy; two sons, Terry (wife, Lori) Shambaugh, Galva, and Tim Shambaugh, LaFayette; one daughter, Debra (husband, Larry Ringberg) Shambaugh, LaFayette; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three nephews, Rick, Larry and Ron. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Dean Shambaugh.
