Dorothy Cassidy, 85, East Peoria, died March 25, 2006, at OSF St. Francis.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard Catholic, Peoria. Private burial of ashes at Resurrection cemetery , Peoria. Visitation is 10 a.m. to services at church. Arrangements by Wright & Salmon, Peoria.

She married James Cassidy Sr. He died in 2001.

Surviving are children, Roger, Newbury Park, Calif., Bernard, Washington, Sr. Janet Cassidy O.S.B., Moline, Barbara Noe, Chillicothe, Ruth Levan, Peoria; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Esther Foster
Esther D. Foster, 72, of Moline died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Trinity Pathway Hospice at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church, Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home with a Christian Wake at 4 p.m. Memorials can be made to Christ the King Church or American Cancer Society.

The former Esther Soloman was born Oct. 15, 1933, in Rock Island, the daughter of Robert and Genevieve Kerofsky Soloman. She married James C. Foster Aug. 27, 1949, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death Oct. 11, 1992.

Esther worked as a server at Moline High School cafeteria. Her prior employment was as a cake decorator at the former Johnson Bakery, Moline.

Esther was a caring and devoted wife and mother. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her dog Bailey. Esther enjoyed camping and cooking. She was a member of Christ the King Church, Moline.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Jeff Small, East Moline, Patricia and Gary Cox, Milan; son and daughter-in-law, James and Marie Foster, East Moline; grandchildren, Dayton and Dallas Cox, David Small, Alyssa Yoder and Angela Foster; great-grandchildren, Bailey and Brenna Yoder.

Hazel Benson
Hazel Benson, 92, of DePere, Wis., formerly of East Moline, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, in DePere.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline.

Robert L. Kelly, 80, of Aledo, formerly of Illinois City, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo.

Frank "Chick" Olson, 78, of Keithsburg died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at his home.

Walter Verplaetse
Walter Verplaetse, 78, of Viola died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at his home.

Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, Viola. Burial is in St. John's cemetery , Viola. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Memorials may be made to St. John's Catholic Church.

He was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Moline, the son of Maurice and Marie (DeGrave) Verplaetse. He married Patsy R. Kellum March 11, 1948, at St. Mary's Church, East Moline.

Walt owned Verplaetse Excavating Co. for more than 46 years, semi-retiring in 1998. The business is now being managed by his children, Randall, Ken, Annette and Wayne.

He served in the Army during World War II from 1946-1948, stationed in the Philippines. He enjoyed farming.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Viola, where he was a former parish council member and trustee.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Verplaetse, Viola; two daughters and son-in-law, Lynn Carlton, Seaton, and Annette and Kirk Doonan, Viola; five sons and daughters-in-law, Randall Verplaetse, Barstow, Scott and Cheri Verplaetse, Harleton, Texas, Ken Verplaetse, Matherville, Wayne and Angie Verplaetse, Viola, and Robert Verplaetse, Davenport; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Dorothy DeBo, Hobe Sound, Fla., Marion Plogh, Bethlehem, Ga., and Alice Hawkins, East Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, George Carlton; infant grandson, Adam Verplaetse; and an infant brother.

Charlotte `JoAnne' Geerts
Charlotte "JoAnne" Geerts, 71, of Davenport died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

Steven Krulik
Steven J. Krulik, 59, of Davenport died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.

Among survivors is his wife, Margo.

Marie Campana
Marie Campana, 83, of Andrew, Iowa, formerly of Rock Island, died Friday, March 24, 2006, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a Christian wake service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island.

Marie was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of George and Stella Strong. She married George Campana on Jan. 25, 1940, in Dubuque. He preceded his wife in death on Nov. 11, 1975.

Mrs. Campana worked as a server and cashier at Mulkey's Restaurant, Rock Island, for 15 years. Her memberships include Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Marie enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed going to the Rock Island riverboat.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Dan and Sue Campana, Bettendorf, Bob Campana, Andrew, Iowa, Kathy and Mike Carr, Ohio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Campana was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; four sisters and one brother.

Esther Foster
Esther D. Foster, 72, of Moline, died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Henry Baumgardt
Henry W. Baumgardt, 85, of Silvis, died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Knoll cemetery , Sterling. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Henry Baumgardt was born Sept. 21, 1920, in Mount Carroll, Ill., son of George and Luella Traum Baumgardt. He married Juanita Pfunstein Jan. 10, 1946, in Milledgeville. She preceded him in death April 24, 1970. He married Mildred Fossett Sept. 2, 1973, in Milledgeville. She preceded him in death Nov. 30, 1989.

He retired from Kraft Foods in 1980 after working 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving 29 months in the Philippines and seven months in Honshu, Japan. He received the Good Conduct Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with two battle stars, Philippine Liberation with one star and the Victory Ribbon.

He enjoyed watching baseball and sitting outside, but most of all he loved being with his family.

Survivors (and spouses) are daughter, Penny (Gene) Harrington, East Moline; two granddaughters, Juanita (Tony) Terronez, Hampton, and Hailey Harrington, East Moline; three great-grandchildren, Courtney, Caitlynne and Keegan Terronez, Hampton; brother, Vernon (Babe) Baumgardt, Chadwick, Ill.; stepdaughter, Roberta Konneck; and three stepgrandsons, Tampico; and special friend, Ellen Shock.

James Barnes
James "Jim" Barnes, 73, of Sherrard, died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Matherville. Burial is in St. John cemetery , Viola. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola, with a rosary recited at 7:15 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Mercer County Nursing Home or St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Jim was born July 25, 1932, in Perryton Township, Ill., son of Francis and Marguerite Mier Barnes. He married Eleanor Franck Jan. 28, 1956, at St. Ambrose Church, Milan. He graduated from Joy High School and St. Ambrose College. He served two years in the Army.

He retired from John Deere Parts Distribution Center, Milan, in 1994.

Jim enjoyed bluegrass music and was the founder of the Annual Bluegrass Festival in Aledo. He also enjoyed standard bred horse racing. He was a member of the Mercer County Board, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2019, Matherville, Illinois Harness Horse Association, United States Trotting Association, UAW Local 79, and St. Anthony Catholic Church, Matherville.

Survivors are wife, Eleanor Barnes, Sherrard; six daughters and spouses, Theresa Panther and Dennis Goben, Preemption, Mary Kenney, Aledo, Cathy and Craig Wonderlich, Moline, Carol and Richard Bode, McLean, Ill., Sarah and Jim Norburg, Wilmington, N.C., Margaret Wagner, Roanoke, Ill.; one son, Tim Barnes, Ashland City, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn DeClerck, Reynolds; brother, John Michael Barnes, Crossville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons, James Pather and Benjamin Kenney.

Arthur Coziahr
Arthur B. Coziahr, 87, of Wataga, Ill., died Friday, March 24, 2006, at St. Mary Medical Center, Peoria, Ill.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West, Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. David Kramer will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials can be made to the Wataga Congregational Church or the Wataga Drop-in Center.

He was born May 5, 1918, in Rio, son of Arthur B. and Mildred Murray Coziahr Sr. He graduated from Wataga High School. He married Faye E. Seward in Palmyra, Mo., on Oct. 7, 1939. He served in the Army as a tank driver during World War II.

He was a driver for Burlington Truck Lines. He then worked for Sinclair Refinery Pipeline Co. in Dahinda, Ill., for nine years. He farmed in the Avon and Orion area for 11 years. He also worked in sales and management for Arco Fertilizer Plant and Morman Seed and Fertilizer in Woodhull.

He lived in Wataga the past 23 years. He was a member of the Senior Citizens in Wataga. He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge of Orion and a past member of the Wataga Lions Club. He was a member of the Wataga Congregational Church for 22 years. He was very active in his church. His family was always first.

Survivors (and spouses) are wife; daughter, Pam (Carl) Glawe, Geneseo; one brother, Marvin "Pete" (Marge) Coziahr, Galesburg; three sisters, Elsie Law, Cambridge, Doris Williams, Victoria, Ill., and Alice (Jay) McGee, Altona; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Dennis A. Coziahr on March 20, 2000, and James Coziahr on Dec. 26, 1998; four brothers and four sisters.

Serafino "Sam" Curcuru
Serafino "Sam" Curcuru, 61, of Geneseo, a longtime Geneseo businessman, died unexpectedly Friday, March 24, 2006, in Geneseo.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Michael Pakula will celebrate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, where a scripture service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Serafino Curcuru Memorial Fund.

Sam was born May 19, 1944, in Cinisi, Sicily, Italy, son of Saverio and Benedetta Manzella Curcuru. He married Jean Rogers Aug. 9, 1971, in Cambridge.

Sam opened Sam's La Roma Pizza in 1969, which currently is still operated by the Curcuru family. He later opened Sam's Ultimate Car Wash and Sam's Laundromat, all in Geneseo. He was very active in Geneseo rental property. Sam was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo. He had a strong work ethic that his family has inherited. Sam truly loved his work, family and his grandson. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and people.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; two daughters and spouse, Detta and Frank Palazzolo, Oracle, Ariz., Mia Curcuru, Geneseo; three sons and spouse, Saverio Curcuru, Geneseo, Marc Curcuru, Geneseo, Tony and Katie Curcuru, Geneseo; one grandson, Serafino Hayden Curcuru; one brother, Salvatore Curcuru, France; two sisters and spouses, Nina and Vito Palazzolo, Cinisi, Sicily, Italy, Enza and Pino LoPiccolo, Cinisi, Sicily, Italy. He was preceded in death by his parents.
