James Magdefrau

James Brandt Magdefrau, 80, of Washington, Iowa, formally of Wayland, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Born Aug. 24, 1923, in Wayland, he was the son of Albert B. and Leola Wyse Magdefrau. On Aug. 25, 1945, he married Dorothy Arce Kaufman in Nashua. He later married Waunita Kauffman on Aug. 22, 1964, in Mount Pleasant. She died April 19, 1999.

Mr. Magdefrau spent four months in California working at Bowie Pie Co. Returning to Wayland, he worked at Zehr's Standard. In 1943 he worked at Abbott Laboratories in Waukegan, Ill., then returned to Wayland later that year to manage Zehr's Standard. In 1944, he leased and operated Jim's Standard until December 1945. In 1946, he enrolled at the Cedar Rapids Barber College and after graduation began working for Dutch's Barber Shop in January 1947. From 1951 to 1953, he managed Kenny Farrier's Barber Shop at Brighton while he served in the Korean Conflict. Returning to Wayland he purchased Dutch's Barber Shop in 1953 and operated it until retiring.

He attended school in the Wayland Consolidated School.

He was a 50 year member of the Wayland Mennonite Church, Adoniram Lodge No. 120 AF&AM Wayland, Wayland Chapter No. 491 OES, Cyrus Chapter No. 13 RAM Washington, Bethlehem Commandary #45 KT Washington, Bethlehem No. 8 WSJ Iowa City, KAABA Shrine Temple Davenport, Zeredetha Council No. 21 R&SM Washington, Scottish Rite 32–degree KCCH Davenport and the Moose Lodge No.1003, Mount Pleasant. He was past president of the Shrine Club of Washington and Louisa County. He was a retired director of the Wayland State Bank, retired member of the Wayland Fire Department and retired board member of Way–Mar Housing Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Bear of Slinas, Calif., and two grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin noon Tuesday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland with a Masonic and Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. Following the service, the family will receive friends until 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Magdefrau will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wayland Mennonite Church with the Revs. Gerry Klopfenstein and Pam Unruh officiating. Burial will be in the North Hill Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Shiners Hospital Transportation Fund, Hospice of Washington County and the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Janet Cabel

Janet A. Cabel, 68, of Wa–pello, formerly of Bettendorf, died following an extended illness Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.

Born Aug. 16, 1936, in Muscatine, she was the daughter of Louis and Violet Edgington O'Brien. She was first married to James Martens. On Aug. 23, 1984, she married Kenneth R. Cabel in Davenport. He died May 28, 1987.

Mrs. Cabel was a homemaker.

She enjoyed camping and fishing, jigsaw puzzles and playing bingo with friends in Bettendorf.

Survivors include one son, Mike Martens of Milan, Ill.; one granddaughter; one stepdaughter, Lynette Jester of Keosauqua; three stepsons, Gary Cabel and David Cabel, both of Bettendorf, and Wayne Cabel of Davenport; six stepgrandchildren; four sisters, Ruby Bosten of Eaton, Ohio, Peggy Deitiering of Poway, Calif., Shirley Howell of Muscatine and Ruth O'Brien of Wapello; and nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at Runge Mortuary Chapel in Davenport.

The funeral for Mrs. Cabel will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Runge Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Evan Griffith

Evan Griffith, 72, of Canton, Ill., died at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

Born June 12, 1931, in St. David, Ill., he was the son of Robert and Charlotte Crossland Griffith. He married Lorain Bennett.

Mr. Griffith worked for 28 years for the United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 536 in Peoria, Ill., retiring in 1986.

He attended schools in St. David and Lewiston, Ill. He served as president of the union for 20 years. He was of the Christian faith and a member of Moose Lodge of Canton, Fin & Feather Club of Fairview, Ill., and was a former member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Cheryl Lynn Myers of Canton; three granddaughters; seven great–grandchildren; six nieces and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of the service Saturday.

The funeral for Mr. Griffith will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home, with Robin Thompson officiating. Burial will be in LaHarpe Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for LaHarpe Christian Church Food Pantry and LaHarpe Senior Citizens Meals Program.

Dennis Nichols

Dennis R. Nichols, 57, of Keokuk, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born March 28, 1948, in Keokuk, he was the son of Verlon "Dutch" and Willa "Louise" Roush Nichols.

Mr. Nichols worked for Atmos Energy for 28 years.

He was a lifelong area resident. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and Southside Boat Club.

Survivors include two sons, Matthew D. Nichols of O'Fallon, Mo., and Mark T. Nichols of Las Vegas; three daughters, Sarah J. Nichols of Affton, Mo., and Kayla M. Nichols and Jenna D. Nichols, both of Keokuk; seven grandchildren; one brother, Greg Nichols of Kahoka, Mo.; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, one in infancy.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a Christian vigil service at 7 p.m.

The Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Nichols will be at 10 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Harness Cemetery in Mount Sterling.

A memorial has been established for an education fund for his daughters.

Everett Nichols

Everett W. Nichols, 95, of rural Richland, died at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Park Place Long Term Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Aug. 5, 1909, in Stockport, he was the son of Millard F. and Ella D. Runyon Nichols. On Oct. 18, 1936, he married Viola Hagebock in Bowling Green, Mo. She died Jan. 18, 2005.

Mr. Nichols worked on the railroad and then started shearing sheep, traveling to Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. He lived and farmed in Richland since 1941.

He was raised in Bentonsport and was a 1928 graduate of Bonaparte High School.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Nichols of Centerville and Paul Nichols of Richland; four daughters, Joylynn Smith of Hillsboro, Pat Brem of West Burlington, Teresa Coleman of Mount Pleasant and Tamara Vandevenne of Chariton; nine grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 15 great–grandchildren; three stepgreat–grandchildren; and three sisters, Lena Hughes, Leota Etka and Charlotte Nichols, all of Keosauqua.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m.

The funeral for Mr. Nichols will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bryan Wixom officiating. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Vernon Cemetery.

Freeda M. Lyons

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Freeda Marsha Lyons, 86, will be 10:30 AM this morning at the First Baptist Church, Burlington, with Reverend Tyrone C. Henderson officiating. Inurnment will be 10:30 AM Thursday, April 14, in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in rural Davis County, IA, with Reverend James H. Wakelin officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30 AM today at the First Baptist Church. A memorial has been established for First Baptist Church.

Helen Taeger

The funeral service for Mrs. Helen Taeger, 93, of Prairie Grove, will be held this morning at 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Prairie Grove. Rev. Gary Boschee and Rev. David Vigen will officiate. Interment will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established for the Peace Lutheran Church.

Dean Howard

Dean Lewis Howard, 74, of Donnellson died following a brief illness Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Dec. 30, 1930, in Red Oak, he was the son of Lewis and Elsie Anderson Howard. On Aug. 18, 1957, he married Elizabeth Anne Westergaard in Adair.

Mr. Howard was an industrial education teacher in the Denmark, Central Lee and Fort Madison high schools, retiring after 37 years.

He was a member of Donnellson Presbyterian Church. He was a Korean War Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Angela Fulk of Buffalo, N.Y.; one son, Tony Howard of Mount Pleasant; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one brother.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time of service Tuesday at Donnellson Presbyterian Church.

The memorial service for Mr. Howard will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Donnellson Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Richard Bentzinger officiating. Burial will be in Zion Mennonite Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Donnellson Presbyterian Church, Donnellson Lion's Club and Southeast Iowa Renal Dialysis Center in Mount Pleasant.

The Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Ervin Marti

Ervin Leo Marti, 67, of Burlington, died of complications from heart disease at 5:50 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Born Oct. 6, 1937, in Lamar, Mo., he was the son of of Fred W. and Anna K. Kaufman Marti. On Sept. 23, 1962, he married Teresa K. Wagenbach in Burlington.

Mr. Marti was a CPA for 35 years. He was a partner in Marti Lynch & Co. LLC, CPA of Burlington.

He received his bachelor of science degree from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan. He was a member of Oakville Apostolic Christian Church, AICPA and Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants. He served as church treasurer for many years. He also enjoyed working on his farm.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Stefanie Stoller, Stacia Tapp and Shayla Steiner, all of Burlington; five grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Schrock of Mediapolis, Dorothy Wagenbach of Burlington and Corrine Roth and Allene Steffen, both of Goodfield, Ill.; and two brothers, Dale Marti and Leonard Marti, both of Lamar.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Marti will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Oakville Apostolic Christian Church, with ministers of the church officiating. Burial will be in Oakville Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Oakville Apostolic Christian Church, Young House Family Services and Hope Haven.

Helen Mohr

Helen Marie Wetzel Mohr, 85, of Carthage, Ill., died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at her home.

Born March 31, 1922, in Colchester, Ill., she was the daughter of Glen Levi and Bertha A. Gabrielson Fentem. On Feb. 1, 1941, she married Burdette Carson Wetzel in Kahoka, Mo. He died in 1967. On Sept. 14, 1968, she married Walden Lloyd Mohr in Keokuk. He died in 1986.

Mrs. Mohr was a member of the Argyle Bible Church as a child. She graduated from Colchester High School in 1938 with honors. She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Carthage. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and canning her own vegetables. She was a hard worker.

Survivors include four daughters, Karel Carl, Brenda Sage and Margery Campbell, all of Carthage, and Nancy Lionberger of LaHarpe, Ill.; three sons, James Wetzel of Stanley, Idaho, David Wetzel of Nauvoo, Ill., and Byron Wetzel of Belleview, Idaho; 17 grandchildren; 26 great–grandchildren; two great–great–grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Fentem of Leesburg, Ga., and Ernest Fentem of Rantoul, Ill.; and one sister, Dorothy Miller of Macomb, Ill.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and one son.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Mohr will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Carthage. Burial will follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.

Memorials have been established to Carthage Memorial Hospital and Argyle Bible Church.
