Elden Poppy
Elden W. Poppy, 71, Cambridge, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at the East Pasco Care Center, Dade City, Fla.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, at the Augustana Lutheran Church, Andover. The Rev. Lynn Bergren will officiate. Burial will be in the Red Oak cemetery , rural Cambridge, with military services by the Andover American Legion. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Augustana Lutheran Church, the AlWood Academic Foundation, or the American Cancer Society. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Cambridge, is in charge of the arrangements.

Elden Poppy was born Aug. 1, 1934, in rural Cambridge, the son of J. William and Mildred Erlandson Poppy. He was educated in AlWood schools and graduated from AlWood High School in 1952. Elden served in the U.S. Navy in the mid 1950s. His marriage to Patricia Libby took place on Nov. 22, 1959, in Kewanee.

Elden was a lifelong farmer in Andover Township. Although he moved to Cambridge in 1991, he remained active in the family farming operation.

His memberships include the Augustana Lutheran Church, where he had served on the Church Board and the Property Committee, the Andover American Legion Post 465, the Henry County Pork Producers, and the Henry County Livestock Feeders Association. Elden served on the Henry County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, the Edwards River Drainage District Board, the Red Oak cemetery Board, and the Andover Township Trustees. He was very involved in getting a cooperative program started between the AlWood School District and the Galesburg School District's Vocational Agriculture Program. He loved fishing and building construction.

Surviving are his wife, Pat, Cambridge; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Mindy Poppy, Kenneth and Diane Poppy, Keith and Heather Poppy, all of rural Lynn Center; and six grandchildren, Aaron, Amanda, Mikayla, Kollin, John William, and Sydney Poppy. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Donna Pobanz, East Moline, and Ila and Vernon Wilson, Orion. His parents and an infant brother preceded him in death.

Dixie Stephens
Dixie L. Stephens, 62, of Colona, died Friday, March 24, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

Margaret Stevens
Margaret R. Stevens, 90, of Cambridge, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Hillcrest Home, rural Geneseo.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 27, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Cambridge. The Rev. James Pallardy will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery , Cambridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Beacon of Hope Hospice.

The former Margaret Maertens was born May 13, 1915, in East Moline, the daughter of Hector and Augusta DePaepe Maertens. She was educated in the East Moline area schools. Her marriage to August Stevens took place on Sept. 27, 1941, in East Moline. He died Feb. 4, 1987.

She worked at John Deere Foundry in East Moline prior to her marriage. Later she was employed as a cook at Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo from 1961 to 1976. Margaret was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking and loves her grandchildren.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Paul VanWinkle, Ozark, Mo.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Sharon Stevens, Cambridge, James and Tooter Stevens, Cambridge, and John and Karen Stevens, Altona. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and a sister-in-law, Madeline Maertens, Galva. Her husband, three sisters, and two brothers preceded her in death.

R. Merle Brinkman
R. Merle Brinkman, 95, of DeWitt, Iowa, formerly of Davenport, died Friday, March 24, 2006, at Wheatland Manor, Iowa.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Runge, Davenport. Visitation is 9 a.m. to services. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park.

He was born Sept. 7, 1910. He married Leora Brauer June 13, 1933. She died Sept. 12, 1992.

Survivors are daughter, Beverly Kuehn, DeWitt; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Elsie Becker, Lloyd, both Missouri, Gladys Seifert, Wheatland, Raymond, Lost Nation, Iowa, Harlen, Wyoming, Iowa.

Edward Hodge Sr.
Edward "Eddie" L. Hodge Sr., 74, of Davenport, formerly Rock Island, died Monday, March 13, 2006, at Genesis West, Davenport.

Private burial was held in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, handled arrangements.

He was born June 15, 1931, to Eugene and Lola Mae Brown. He was a Korean War veteran and served in the Air Force. Prior to his retirement, he was a letter carrier in Rock Island.

Eddie was active in the local Blues music scene and played piano in the band, Jazz Express, which he helped pilot. He was recognized by the former OIL Music Magazine as the area's top keyboard musician in 1994.

Survivors are son, Edward Hodge Jr., Oak Park, Mich.; brother, Edwin Davidson, La Place, La.; and many dear friends.

Deronta Jamison
Deronta Jamison, 29, of Davenport, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at Genesis West, Davenport.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Weerts, Davenport, with visitation one hour prior to services.

He was a restaurant cook.

Survivors are children, Angelique Jamison, and Deronta Jamison II, parents, Loretta Jamison and Earnest Langford, all Davenport; brothers, Lamont Jamison, East Moline, Antonio Jamison, Davenport; sister, Dorcille Jamison, San Antonio, Texas; grandmother, Lela Jamison, Glenwood, Ill.; uncle, Odeal (spouse, Rosalyn) Jamison, Chicago Heights, Ill.; and two nieces.

David Lobsien
David C. Lobsien, 58, of Davenport died Friday, March 17, 2006, at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Private services were held Friday, March 24, at the National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, assisted with arrangements.

John `Jack' Miller
John D. "Jack" Miller, 55, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, in his home.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Visitation is 11 a.m. until funeral time. Memorials may be made to the family.

Jack was born Feb. 26, 1951, in Quincy, Ill., the son of Forrest "Lee" and Mariam McClean Miller. He married Cindy Decker on July 24, 1990, in Rock Island.

Jack was a welder and quality control technician for 22 years at Norcross, formerly Servus Rubber, in Rock Island. He served as Union President for Servus Rubber. He tended bar at various taverns in the area, most recently at Town and Country Bowling Alley in 2004.

Jack enjoyed sports of all kinds, but especially the Bears and Cubs. He constantly teased his sister, Jill, for being a Cardinals fan. He really enjoyed playing foosball.

Jack is survived by a sister, Jill and Fred Mueller, Milan; a brother, Bud and Lavon Miller, Rock Island; and three nieces and a nephew-in-law, Kelly and Rich Heidecke, Westmont, Ill., Krystal Mueller, Oak Brook, Ill., and Kristine Mueller, Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mostly, he loved being with his special buddy, his dog, "Bubba".

Jack will always be remembered for his witty personality. His most famous line was, "I'm never going to grow up!"

Virginia Pini
Virginia I. Pini, 95, of Rock Island, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Quad Cities Diabetes Association.

Virginia was born Oct. 24, 1910, in Brazil, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Jenny Ducey Buell. She married Aldo Pini Dec. 24, 1930, in Oregon, Ill.

She worked at the former McCabes Department Store, Rock Island, for many years before retiring in 1972. In earlier years she worked at the former J.I. Case Company, Bettendorf.

She loved cooking, baking, crocheting and reading.

Virginia is survived by daughters, Paula Sacco, St. Paul, Minn., and Joy Davis, Rock Island; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; niece, Jennifer Breckenridge; and nephew, Webster Buell Jr. She was preceded by a grandson; sister, Anita Close; brother, Webster Buell; son-in-law, Charlie Davis.

Alfred Sabbe
Alfred Sabbe, 83, of Rock Island, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Fred Sajak
Fred R. Sajak, 91, of Rock Island, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island.

Arrrangements are pending at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Herbert Sittig
Herbert F. Sittig, 96, of Rock Island, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at his home.

A time of remembrance and memorial luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 27, in Haake Hall at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 4107 21st Ave., Moline. Funeral services start at 1 p.m. on Monday at the church. Pastor Wilfred Karsten will officiate. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is helping the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline.

Herb was born Jan. 19, 1910, in Rock Island, to Frederick J. and Bertha Stahmer Sittig. He married Evelyn P. Scherer Aug. 14, 1938. He married Louise M. VanMechelen on Dec. 26, 1964.

Herb was a letter carrier for the Rock Island Post Office for 40 years. He retired in 1970. In October of 2005, Herb was honored for being a 75-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Louise, Rock Island; daughter, Kathy (Wayne) Swanson, Lynn Center; son, Stephen Sittig, Chicago; granddaughter, Laura; grandson, Evan; niece, Florence. His parents; his first wife; a sister; a nephew; and a great-granddaughter preceded him in death.

Harold Brown
Harold L. Brown, 77, of Moline, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 27, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Visitation is Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park cemetery . Memorials may be made to the Quad City Kidney Center, Moline.

Harold was born Nov. 26, 1928, in Chrystal Falls Township, Mich., the son of Harry and Hilda Holmes Brown. He married Alice M. Hofmann on April 27, 1985, in Rock Island.

Harold retired in 1989 after 40 years working as an assembler from the former Farmall International Harvester, Rock Island. He was a former member of the Rock Island Moose Club and he enjoyed walking at the Moline Butterworth Parkway.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; stepdaughter, Deborah Dochterman, Carbon Cliff; stepson, Kenneth Woods Jr., Rock Island; five stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Fern Rizzardi, Iron Mountain, Mich., and Lorrain Carlson, Oak Brook, Ill.; brothers, Floyd Brown, Apache, Ore., and Harry McQueen, Orem, Utah; and a special friend, Larry Plumb, Moline.

Mary Moreno
Mary Bushnell Moreno, 78, of Moline, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. today at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline, with graveside services following at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Mary was born June 6, 1927, in Carrollton, Ill., to Jesse and Lillian Cato Talley. She married Jack Bushnell in 1945, in Carrollton. She then married Filiberto Moreno Jan. 7, 1980, in Moline.

She worked as a nurse's aid, retiring in 1986.

She is survived by husband, Filiberto; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Bev Bushnell, Hardin, Ill., Michael Bushnell, Rock Island; daughters and son-in-law, Connie Bushnell, Kathie and Sidney Blaser, Martha Bushnell, all of Milan; daughter-in-law, Sue Bushnell, Barstow; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; 12 brothers and sisters; two sons, Rick and Bill Bushnell.

Viola Valentine
Funeral services for Viola M. Valentine, 94, of Silvis, are 11 a.m. Monday at Wildwood Baptist Church, East Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Vi died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wildwood Church, where she was a member.

Viola Doud was born March 14, 1912, in Bussey, Iowa, the daughter of Jesse and Louise Matre Doud. She married Earl Valentine March 9, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa. He died Jan. 30, 1999.

She retired in 1974 as a payroll clerk from John Deere Harvester Works. Mrs. Valentine had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and enjoyed reading and travel.

Survivors include daughter, Janyce Valentine, East Moline; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Evelyn Valentine; grandchildren, Julie Valentine, Kathi Sweeney, Cheryl Theofilis, Pam McCutcheon and Lori Barr; and great-grandchildren, Cory, Lindsey, Kayla, Tanner, Daniel, Marshall and Brett.

Our Grandma was truly an inspiration to our family. The strength that she possessed is one that is certainly rare. No matter what the circumstance, our Grandma always understood and cared. We want to thank you, Grandma, and we want to thank God, too, for if it wasn't His choice, we wouldn't have been blessed by such a beautiful Grandma as you.
