Betty Huggins

Betty Lou Huggins, 72, of Keokuk, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born Nov. 11, 1928, in Quincy, Ill., she was the daughter of William and Jessie Cain Paup. She married Edward Huggins on May 6, 1950, in Quincy, Ill. He died Sept. 17, 1993.
Mrs. Huggins moved from Montrose to Keokuk in 1987.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Keokuk and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, taking walks with friends and helping people.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Young of Montrose; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Jessie Breuer of Keokuk; one stepdaughter, Sally Newby of Cabot, Ark.; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters and one brother-in-law.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The graveside service for Mrs. Huggins will be at noon Wednesday in Keokuk National Cemetery , with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating.

Dorothy Smull

Dorothy Gretchen Smull, 89, of Wilton, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Unity Hospital.

Born April 18, 1912, in Moscow, she was the daughter of John H. and Grace E. Lincoln Birkhofer. On July 20, 1932, she married Willard Smull in Rock Island, Ill.
Mrs. Smull was a homemaker and farmed with her husband.

She was a member of United Methodist Church of Wilton and the Golden Links of the United Methodist Women. She was an accomplished cook who was famous for her homemade noodles, divinity and cinnamon rolls. She collected recipes, enjoyed gardening and crocheted until she lost her eyesight. She loved to play cards, watch the Cardinals, old Western movies and John Wayne.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Willard I. Smull Jr. of Bisbee, Ariz., and John W. Smull of Burlington; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Nevin Birkhofer of Muscatine; two sisters, Norma Chambliss of Tipton and Lois Coram of Muscatine; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one daughter and one brother-in-law.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home in Muscatine.

The funeral for Mrs. Smull will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Biklen officiating. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery . A luncheon will follow in the community room of Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established for Wilton First Responders and United Methodist Church of Wilton.

Kenneth H. Stanbary

The Memorial Service for Mr. Kenneth H. Stanbary, age 83, of West Burlington, who passed away Thursday, August 2, 2001, will be 10:30 AM Thursday in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Reverend Trevor Davis will officiate. Full military honors will be conducted by the VFW Posts 10102, 9162 and the American Legion Post 52 at the Funeral Home. Friends may call after 8:00 AM Wednesday at the Hass Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Inurnment will be at a later date in Keokuk National Cemetery . Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

Paula Johnson

Paula Lou Johnson, 80, of Cameron, Ill., died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at her home.

Born Oct. 25, 1921, in rural Warren County, Ill., she was the daughter of Frank Thomas Sr. and Helen Lucas Wallace. She married Max Eugene Johnson on Feb. 11, 1949, in Coldbrook, Ill. He died March 10, 1984.
Mrs. Johnson attended rural Warren County schools, graduated from Galesburg High School and attended Brown's Business College. She worked at Martin Airways and later at the ASCS office in Monmouth for a number of years. She worked at Farmer's Home Administration in Galesburg, Ill., until her retirement.

She was a member of Coldbrook Christian Church, where she played the organ for many years and served on various boards and committees. She was interested in her family and friends and often served with the local cancer drive.

Survivors include one daughter, Luann Esterdahl of Dunlap, Ill.; two sons, Larry W. Johnson of San Francisco, Calif., and Daryl E. Johnson of Monmouth; four grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one sister, Nanthea Keller of Middleton, Wis.; one brother, Frank T. Wallace of Coldbrook; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Friends may call on Thursday and until the time of service on Friday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth.

The funeral for Mrs. Johnson will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Coldbrook Christian Church in Cameron, Ill., with the Rev. Becky Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Moser Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the elevator fund at her church.

Glenn Conlee Sr.

Glenn Victor Conlee Sr., 91, of rural Montrose, died Sunday morning, July 8, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born March 5, 1910, in rural Montrose, he was the son of Amos and An-na Christen-sen Conlee. On Aug. 24, 1940, he married Ruth Dresser in Fort Madison.
Mr. Conlee worked for several years for Midwest Wax Paper Co. in Fort Madison and then for Fruehauf in Fort Madison for 10 years, retiring in 1975. He also farmed in Lee County most of his life.

He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, a member of Montrose United Methodist Church, Lee County Farm Bureau and Tri-State CB Club. He spent his spare time fixing things around the farm and talking on his CB, where he was known as "Tractor Man." He enjoyed his time as a reserve police officer for Montrose, helping during the annual Watermelon Festival.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Kay Applegate of Littleton, Colo.; two sons, Wayne Conlee of Independence and Glenn Victor Conlee Jr. of Donnellson; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Lenore Gram of West Point; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Tuesday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m.

The memorial service for Mr. Conlee will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Montrose United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elliott George officiating. Burial will be in Montrose Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Montrose United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society.

Clyde Klossing Sr.

Clyde H. Klossing Sr., 83, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Dorothy Braun

Dorothy Marguerite Braun, 85, of Burlington, died at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 23, 1915, in Carthage, Ill., she was the daughter of Oliver and Florence Clampitt Babb. On Sept. 7, 1940, she married Edwin Braun in Burlington. He died Dec. 13, 1991.
Mrs. Braun worked for IRC in Burlington.

She was a 1931 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a former member of Sts. John & Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Braun of Burlington and Edward Braun of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Babb and Donald Babb, both of Burlington, and Richard Babb of Fort Worth, Texas; and three sisters, Betty Babb of Burlington, Donna Dannenbring of Bend, Ore., and Bonnie Wollam of Cantril.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

The funeral for Mrs. Braun will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with Pastor William King officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Howard Davis

Howard "Jake" Davis, 82, of Columbus City, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa.

Born April 5, 1919, in Cotter, he was the son of Walter and Elizabeth Thomas Davis.
Mr. Davis owned and operated the DX Gas Station in Columbus Junction. He also worked for Jake's Supermarket in Wilton for several years and worked for Perfex factory in Washington.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and was a Hall of Fame horseshoe pitcher. He was a big Cubs and Hawkeyes fan and was a big booster for Columbus school sports, especially the girls softball teams. He enjoyed camping.

Survivors include two nephews, Jerry Davies and Dave Davies, both of Wilton; one niece, Judy Herr of Iowa City; several cousins; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents two brothers, one in infancy, one infant sister and special friend, Johanna Boyer.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Davis will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cambrian Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Jo-Ann Azinger

Jo-Ann H. Azinger, 65, of Milwaukee, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at her home.

Born Nov. 19, 1935, in Milwaukee, she was the daughter of Alvin and Elsie Schmidt. She married Gus Azinger.
Mrs. Azinger retired from M & I Data Services in 1998, but then returned as a consultant.

She was a graduate of Cross Lutheran Grade School and was a 1954 graduate of Milwaukee Lutheran High School. She was a lifetime member of Friends of Concordia (University) and a former member of the Mount Olive Youth Board.

Survivors include her husband; five sons, Mack Azinger, Scott Azinger, Chris Azinger, Gus Azinger and Andrew Azinger; three daughters, Cindy Muther, Amy Tassoul and Meg Hohn; 17 grandchildren; two brothers, Warren Schmidt and Phillip Schmidt; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

There will be no visitation.

A celebration service will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Devotion time will follow at 11 a.m.

A graveside service for Mrs. Azinger will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sandusky Cemetery , north of Keokuk, with the Rev. Steven Rasmussen of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Fort Madison officiating.

A memorial has been established for Mount Olive Lutheran Church radio fund, c/o Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 5327 W. Washington Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 53208.

DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk is in charge of local arrangements.

Avon Simmons

Avon Warren Simmons, 79, of Burlington, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Great River Medical Center's Klein Center.

Born April 7, 1922, in Downing, Mo., he was the son of Charles W. and Goldie E. Anders Simmons. On June 19, 1976, he married Helen P. Whalen in Burlington.
Mr. Simmons worked for North American Rocket Dyne for eight years and was a machinist for Murray Trane for 16 years. He retired in 1984.

He was a World War II Air Force veteran. He served from 1942 to 1945 with the 15th Air Force in North Africa.

He was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed working hard in his home machine shop.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Avon Simmons Jr. of Florida and Johnny Dee of Burlington; three daughters, Shirley Shepard of Manchester, Ohio, and Connie Crawford and Bonnie Woods, both of Burlington; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles Simmons of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Simmons will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
