Margaret Taylor

Margaret E. "Essie" Taylor, 81, of Denver, formerly of Mount Pleasant, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Heritage Club Nursing Home in Denver.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. by the St. Alphonsus Altar & Rosary Society.

The funeral Mass for Mrs. Taylor will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Nicholas J. Adam officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Daniel Brown

Daniel "Danny" D. Brown, 72, of Mount Hamill, died at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Donnellson Care Center.

Born Sept. 24, 1931, in New London, he was the son of Joseph Luff and Ida Marie Willey Brown. On Aug. 18, 1951, he married Florence M. Hellweg in St. Paul.

Mr. Brown was part owner and worked at Schwartz Tap in Pilot Grove. He also worked for Joe Spiekermeier in West Point as a TV repairman for many years.

He was a longtime resident of the Mount Hamill area and was a Korean War Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of Prairie Hunters Club in West Point and enjoyed gardening. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Susan Stone of Burlington, Peggy Nickell of Quincy, Ill., Cindy Chambers of West Point and Laureen Schoene of Fort Madison; 15 grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; two brothers, Daryl Brown of Burlington and Bill Brown of New London; two sisters, Joan Septor of New London and Mary Sue Moore of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Link Funeral Home in West Point, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Brown will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Link Funeral Home in West Point, with the Rev. Richard Eis officiating. Burial will be in Brooks Cemetery west of New London.

A memorial has been established.

Clint Agnew

Clint Agnew, 27, of Hamilton, Ill., died Friday afternoon, June 18, 2004, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton.

Dale W. Weber

Dale W. Weber, 78, of Montrose, Iowa, formerly of Burlington, Iowa, passed away at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 31, 2004 at his home.

He was born on June 21, 1926 in Fort Madison, Iowa; he was the son of Earl Lynn and Alice Watson Weber. On Oct. 22, 1950 he married Vivian Alice Anton in Donnellson, Iowa.

Mr. Weber graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1944. That summer he entered the U.S. Army and after basic training was shipped overseas to the South Pacific Theater where he joined the 158th Infantry Regimental Combat Team in ground combat against the Japanese at Luzon Island, Philippines. For this action he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star. After the Japanese surrender, his unit was shipped to Utsunomiya, Japan and based at a former Japanese Army camp. Their primary mission was collecting all firearms and ammunition left in possession of Japanese citizens. He subsequently served in units based in Yokahama and Tokyo. He shipped back to the U.S. in September 1946 and received his honorable discharge from the Army in November of 1946.

In January 1947 he began course work in engineering at Iowa State College. In the fall of 1948 he took employment as an engineering aide with the Soil Conservation Service in Fairfield, Iowa. He worked there for 2 1/2 years, during which time he met and married his wife. He re–entered Iowa State in June of 1951 and graduated in December of 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.

After graduation he moved to the Burlington area where he worked for Dane Morgan & Associates, Sherman Smith & Associates, and finished a 26–year career with Mason & Hanger–Silas Mason Company, Inc. as a department engineer in charge of the Civil Engineering Section of the Plant Engineering Department. He was licensed to practice structural and civil engineering in Iowa and Missouri and held membership in the National Society of Professional Engineers, was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, as well as a member of numerous state and local engineering organizations. He was also a member of the Keokuk American Legion Post 41.

While living in Burlington he was a member of St. Paul UCC of West Burlington where he sang in the choir and served on various committees and church council. In 1995, a few years after retirement, he moved to Montrose, Iowa where he joined the Montrose Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir as well as sang in performances with the St. Barnabas Choir. During retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively both overseas and the U.S. He also enjoyed riding trains and riverboats. Mr. Wever had an avid interest in trains of all kinds and collected railroad books and memorabilia.

Survivors include his wife, one son, Stephen (wife Judy) Weber of Cockeysville, MD, one daughter, Kathleen (husband Larry) Fleming of Greenfield, IN; two grandsons, Rodger and Andrew Weber, one brother, Albert Weber of Goleta, CA, one sister, Neoma Corey of Ft. Meyers, FL, and 16 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call after 12:00 P.M. Tuesday August 3, 2004 at Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday evening.

The funeral for Mr. Weber will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Eads officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Madison, Iowa. Full military rites will be by the Keokuk American Legion Post No. 41.

Memorials have been established for Lee County Hospice.

John Schreiner

John W. Schreiner, 63, of Blaine, Minn., died of cancer Wednesday, July 31, 2002.

Born Dec. 31, 1938, in Burlington, he was the son of Ernest and Augusta Schreiner.

He was a longtime employee of the Belvedere Company.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Sandy; two sons, Scott and Joe; one daughter, Amy Ferguson; five grandchildren; his mother, Augusta Hoff of Burlington; and one sister, Mary Lee Van Osdol.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and one sister.

A memorial service for Mr. Schreiner will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church in Blaine. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service.

A memorial has been established.

Washburn–McReavy Funeral Chapels in Coon Rapids, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Martin

Nancy L. Martin, 73, of Keokuk, died at 6:25 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Montrose Health Center.

Born Feb. 2, 1930, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of Raymond and Winifred Fiedler Dickey. On May 1, 1954, she married Charles E. "Buz" Martin in Keokuk.

Mrs. Martin was a homemaker.

She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and attended All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk.

Survivors include one son, Anthony J. Martin of Kirksville, Mo.; one daughter, Vicky Gillette of Fort Mill, S.C.; numerous grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Dickey of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service Thursday at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk.

The funeral for Mrs. Martin will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greaves Mortuary, with the Rev. Christopher David officiating. Burial will be in Sandusky Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of Lee County.

Franklin Rose

Franklin E. "Frank" Rose, 76, of Keokuk, died at 5:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born April 21, 1928, in Keokuk, he was the son of Omer F. and Bessie J. Busby Rose. On November 10, 1945, he married Bertie Power in Troy, Kan.

Mr. Rose served in the Army during World War II. He worked in construction and delivered soft drinks for many years.

He was an honorary lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose and a member of American Legion Post 41 and Truth for the Day. His hobbies included playing guitar, singing, visiting with friends at McDonald's, camping, being outdoors, bowling and riding horses.

Survivors include his wife of Keokuk; two sons, Gary Rose of Keokuk and Jay Rose of Fort Worth, Texas; three daughters, Diana Miler of Solon, Julia Buschling of Canton, Mo., and Cheryl Harrison of Montrose; 12 grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; and one sister, Ethel Andrews Wilson of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one grandson, six sisters, one brother and two siblings in infancy.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Rose will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at DeJong's Funeral Home, with the Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the American Diabetes Association and American Legion Post 41.

Jerry Lasswell

Jerry Lee Emerson Lasswell, 66, of Fort Madison, died at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1938, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Harry Edwin and Myrtle Mae Bullard Emerson.

Mrs. Lasswell was a retired typesetter for a magazine publisher.

She was a graduate of Fort Madison High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, was awarded Citizen of the Month, and served as editor of the Crimson & Black. She was a member of the Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Survivors include one son, Del Emerson Lasswell of Urbandale; one daughter, Lory Lee Lasswell Aguero of Muscatine; five grandchildren, and one aunt, Toni Emerson of Cleveland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one uncle and one aunt.

Mrs. Lasswell's body has been cremated. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison is in charge of the arrangements.

Dennis Oliphant

Dennis L. Oliphant, 56, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 9:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Ill.

Born Oct. 11, 1946, in Lafayette, Ind., he was the son of Donald Ayers and Louise Knipp Oliphant. He married Janet K. Gaskill.

He was a graduate of West Lafette High School.

Mr. Oliphant, along with his father–in–law, formed and operated Equipco in Monmouth.

Survivors include one daughter, Ginger K. Oliphant of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; two sons, Scott M. Oliphant and Kent M. Oliphant, both of Monmouth.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation.

The body was cremated.

Interment of ashes will follow the graveside service to be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Muck officiating.

Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.

James Garland

James Burton Garland, 90, of New Orleans, formerly of New London, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.
