Robert Smiley
Robert Byron Smiley, 74, of Lancaster, Wis., formerly of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, Iowa.

Private burial will be at a later date.

He was born Dec. 26, 1931, the son of Charles and Thelma Smiley. He was a carpenter contractor before retirement.

He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, 1951-1954. He was a Past Master of the Linden Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Erna, Landaster; brother, Barry (Beth) Smiley, Davenport; sister, Beverly (Ric) Lemburg, Forsyth, Mo.; many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Peggy Barnum
Peggy L. Barnum, 80, of Moline, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at Hitzeman Funeral Home, Brookfield, Ill. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery , Forest Park, Ill. DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, is in charge of local arrangements.

Peggy was born Dec. 1, 1925, in Freeport, Ill., the daughter of Lucian and Selena Wilkinson Martin. She married Frank E. Barnum on June 20, 1987, in Keithsburg.

Mrs. Barnum was an accountant at Jewel Tea Co. in Oak Brook, Ill. She later worked nine years at Wal-Mart in Aledo.

She is survived by her husband, Frank. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

Louella McGowan
Louella G. McGowan, 59, East Moline, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at home surrounded by her family.

Her Celebration of Life services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline. The Rev. Larry French will officiate. Burial will be in Hampton Township cemetery following services. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 14, 1947, in Moline, to Cherokee Bill and Louise Willa Mae Staten French Sr. She married James McGowan, Sept. 10, 1971, in East Moline.

Louella was a cashier in food service at Augustana College, Rock Island, for 28 years, retiring in May 2005. She attended Jehovah Witness' Kingdom Hall. She enjoyed plays, traveling, shopping, spending time with her grandkids, and studying the scriptures.

Louella was a devoted and beautiful wife, mother, grandma and friend. She was a beautiful person inside and out. Louella had a sweet disposition, and was an amazing woman, strong, yet gentle. Her love for her family was immeasurable. She had many friends and was loved by all. Her smile, spirit and generosity will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Stacie French and Nicole McGowan, both of East Moline; brothers, Cherokee Bill (Lydia) French, Missouri, Eugene (Gladys) French, Los Angeles, Calif., Larry (Mae) French and Bruce French, both of East Moline; sister, Beverlee Christopher, Los Angeles, Calif.; aunt, Evelyn Anderson, East Moline; cousin, Oreada Richardson, Georgia; sister-in-law, Lillian Eubanks, Moline; grandsons, Damon and Derryl Overton, granddaughter, Taylor French, all of East Moline; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Marilyn Van de Walle, Marilyn Snook and Joyce Wilson. Louella was preceded by her parents.

Alice Rabe
Alice E. Rabe, 92, of East Moline, died Nov. 8, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, with a visitation one hour prior to service time at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery , Moline.

Alice was born June 15, 1914, in Moline, to Matthew and Margaret Geldart Evans. She was a graduate of Moline High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked in the advertising department of Deere and Company. She married Julius Rabe of Davenport in 1941 and left for Pittsburgh, Pa., where he had been transferred as display manager from the "TriCities" for Sears, Roebuck & Co.

They spent eight years in Pittsburgh and he was transferred to the home office of Sears in Chicago. They lived 29 years in Villa Park, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. She was a member of the Community Congregational Church of Villa Park. Upon Mr. Rabe's retirement, they returned to the "TriCities." He died in 1999.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her son, Joseph Rabe, South Pasadena, Fla.; grandchildren, Scott (Wendy) Rabe, Cary, N.C. Kristine Statz, Cross Plaines, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Kyler and Noah Rabe, Cary, Brady and Chandler Statz, Cross Plaines, Wis.; nieces, Kay Meiers, Stockton, Ill., Jane Tschappat, Rock Island, and Orene Boxmann, East Moline. She was preceded in death by sisters Mary Hellebuyck and Elizabeth Boxmann.

Billy Ragsdale
Billy Joel Ragsdale, 67, of East Moline, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at Hospice Center in Lakeland, Fla.

Cremation rites have been accorded and services will be at a later date. He will be laid to rest at Greenview Memorial Gardens by his son, B.J. There will be a memorial/eulogy/service and potluck for all of his family and friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at John's Downtown Tap, East Moline. Memorials may be made at the luncheon to help cover the cost for the burial.

Billy worked on tow boats for many years and, prior to that, was a painter by trade for years. He enjoyed his friends.

Surviving are his sisters and spouses, Lula and Robert Jones and Cinda Ferguson, all of Lakeland, Sharon Hall, Moline, and Judy and Steve Svec, Carbon Cliff; children, Joey, Alice, Joedeen, Dottie, Billy, Mike and Emily; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Dolly Ragsdale, and his son, B.J.

Madge West
Madge West, 96, of Silvis, formerly of East Moline, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, in Aspen Rehabilitation Center, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline.

Gladys West
Gladys May West, 98, East Moline, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Rosewood Care Center of Moline.

Her visitation will be 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline, with graveside services following. The Rev. Gary Randol will officiate. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Gladys was born on Sept. 29, 1908, in DeSota, Mo., to John and Mable Shipley Huskey. She married Edward West, May 5, 1928, in Pekin, Ill.

She was a homemaker and a member of the former Whole Truth Tabernacle. She enjoyed sewing and shopping.

She is survived by her son, Rolland (Patsy) West, East Moline; sister-in-law, Nellie West, Rock Island; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Gearld; four brothers; and three sisters.

Landen Kohn
Landen Thomas Kohn, 4-month-old son of Jacque and Rodney Kohn of Coal Valley, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, in the emergency room at Trinity Medical Center, Moline.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Burial is in Albany cemetery , Albany, Ill. A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Landen was born July 6, 2006, in Silvis.

He is survived by his parents; siblings, Danielle McWilliams, Logan and Luke Kohn; grandparents, Louis and Marla McWilliams, Coal Valley, Sherry and Jon Kavanaugh, Cordova, and Joy and Thomas Wickes, Albany; great-grandparents, Dorothy Harkey, West Palm Beach, Fla., Mary Coulter, Moline, Darlene Hartman, Clinton, Iowa, and Merle Kohn, Savannah, Ill.; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and special friends, Trisha Mans and Chuck Emmerson and their families. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Roger Kohn Sr.

Robert Baker
Robert J. Baker, 89, of Aledo, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo.

Arrangements are pending at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo.

Mary Byam
Mary F. Byam, 92, of Erie died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Arrangements are pending at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie.

Frank Current
Frank R. Current, 63, of New Boston, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo.

Robert Aguilar
Bob Aguilar, 64, Bettendorf, died Nov. 8, 2006, at Genesis East.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Alphonsus Catholic, with burial in Holy Family cemetery , both Davenport. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, with rosary at 4 p.m. and prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation is 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce; children, Tricia Zinger, Davenport, and Todd Childers, Bettendorf; four granddaughters; five siblings including, Annetta Walton-Medina and Juanita Aguilar, both Davenport, Henry Aguilar, LeClaire.

David Levings
David M. Levings, 19, of Davenport, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary and Cremation Service, Davenport.

Judith Bradley
Judith A. "Judy" Bradley, 48, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at her home.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the family for her grandchildren's education.

Judy Hollmer was born Sept. 3, 1958, in Davenport, a daughter of Robert and Doris Roussell Hollmer. She married Marty Bradley, Nov. 19, 1999, in Rock Island.

She was the hardware department manager at K & K Hardware, Bettendorf. Judy previously worked 20 years at the Edgington Hardware, Edgington, Ill.

Judy enjoyed bowling, playing darts and traveling. She loved her grandchildren and the time she got to spend with them.

Survivors include her husband, Marty; stepdaughters, Nichole Bradley, Rock Island, and Erin Bradley, Burlington, Iowa; grandsons, Xander Chalupa, Burlington, and Patrick Bradley, Rock Island; her parents, Robert and Doris Hollmer, Taylor Ridge, Ill.; brother and sisters (and spouses), Karen (Mike) Hines, Milan, Douglas (Carolyn) Hollmer, Andalusia, Ill., Susan (David) Wynn, Milan; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Hollmer.

Arthur Brown
Arthur B. Brown, 83, of Rock Island, passed away Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at St. Anthony's Care Center, Rock Island.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greater Antioch Baptist Church, Rock Island, where he was a member and a deacon. Burial will be in Pine Hill cemetery , Davenport. A wake will be one hour prior to the service.

Arthur was born Jan. 17, 1923, in Batchelor, La., the son of Fred and Queen Carson Brown. He married Margaret Grisby in 1950 in Rock Island. She preceded him in death. He later married Margie Flowers Aug. 1, 1998, in Rock Island. She passed away Feb. 2, 2002.

He was an over-the-road semi-truck driver for more than 40 years. He was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by sisters, Rosalee Tucker, Baton Rouge, La., and Mildred Taggart, Rock Island; a brother, the Rev. Aristide Brown, San Antonio, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Laura Nelson
Laura O. Nelson, 104, formerly of Rock Island and Taylor Ridge, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo, Ill.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial will be in Edgington cemetery , Edgington. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until services. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, or to the church.

Laura was born Jan. 10, 1902, in Cable, the daughter of Chalmer N. and Emma Oldfield Barton. She attended Brown's Business College. She then worked at the former People's National Bank, Rock Island, where she met her future husband. She married William L. Nelson Oct. 25, 1922, in Rock Island.

She and her new husband began farming in the Taylor Ridge area. They farmed for 31 years until Bill's death on July 13, 1965.

At the former Central Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, Laura was a member of the Women's Association and the Lamplighter's Circle. She was also an 81-year member of Eastern Star No. 617 in Andalusia, AARP and Bethany Home Living Group. She sewed for more than 20 years as a volunteer at Bethany Home in Rock Island, where she mended clothes for the children. She enjoyed gardening and handwork.

She is survived by a special friend, Lawrence Weiss, Taylor Ridge; and several distant cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lavinia Wood; and brothers, Louis and Harold Barton.

Richard `Dink' Paul
Richard T. "Dink" Paul, 59, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Edward Hospital, Naperville, Ill.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Dink was born May 19, 1947, in Rock Island, the son of Richard K. and Thorney Ruysbroeck Paul. He was supervisory planning officer at the Rock Island Arsenal, where he worked for more than 20 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Dink was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Dan Frain, Rock Island, and Alison and Todd Jackson, Nixa, Mo.; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Christine Boynton.
